Sluice gate HYDRAULIC DYNAMOMETER

DESIGN FEATURES Hydraulic dynamometer suitable for educational, experimental and maintenance testing of IC engines generally and electric motors. The Hydraulic Dynamometer HD series uses vane power absorption elements with water providing the coupling between the fixed stator and the engine driven rotor.

CONSTRUCTION The rotor and stators are precision casting of stainless steel, thus giving exceptionally good resistance to erosion and corrosion. The rotor is mounted on the dynamometer shaft by keyways maintaining a high degree of shaft dynamic balance. The couplings are fitted using the same method. The shaft runs in deep groove ball bearings, which are grease lubricated. The shaft assembly, power absorption elements, bearings and seals are all housed in a cast iron casing. The bedplate is also constructed from cast iron with the casing being supported on the bedplate by lubricated self-aligning ball bearings mounted in trunnion housings attached to the bedplate.

INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL Manually operated dynamometers if required can be supplied with a 19 inch rack mounting instrument module housing digital torque and speed indicators and an analogue speed indicator. Dynamometer controls are incorporated in this module when supplied for use with Remote Manual operated machines. TORQUE MEASUREMENT Torque is measured by a high accuracy strain gauge load cell mounted between the trunnion bearings supported casing and the bedplate. In case of spring balance model, load is measured by high accuracy spring balance. SPEED MEASUREMENT The dynamometer shaft speed is measured by a pulse pick-up mounted adjacent to a 60-toothed wheel on the dynamometer coupling. DYNAMOMETER CONTROL The power absorbed by the dynamometer is controlled by the varying quantity of water circulating in the vortex of the rotor and stator elements. This is achieved by a moving sluice gate in the dynamometer casing. The dynamometer is available with alternative control options: 1. Manual control is designed for operation local to the dynamometer. 2. Remote manual control allows operation away from the dynamometer via increase/decrease push buttons. COUPLING Rotation is unidirectional and the standard dynamometer is supplied with one half-coupling for operation in one direction. Operation in the other direction is achieved by fitting a half-coupling at the opposite end of the shaft. Fitting a half-coupling at each end of the shaft and rotating the dynamometer in 180째 can employ bi-directional operation. OPTIONS: Stator Rotor locking arrangement. This is useful to carry out locked rotor test in case of electrical motor. Running in arrangement. Engines which are new or freshly overhauled are best run in by external power before being permitted to run on fuel. The running in procedure has been studied by reconditioning workshops and is suitably performed by running in motor capable of bedding down the pistons, rings, bearings, etc., more scientifically and adequately than by running under the engines own power. Running in arrangement is also found useful for starting of the engine. SPECIFICATIONS POWER AND TORQUE CAPACITY MODEL 1.5 5.0

WATER SUPPLY The quality of cooling water will have an effect on the operating life of any hydraulic dynamometer. The ideal water condition for optimum life is: Maximum water outlet temp. 60°C. pH value 7.4 to 8.4 pH Filtration 185 microns Suspended particles not to exceed 1000 parts per million. The volume of water required for cooling is dependent upon the temperature of water supply and varies from 19.5 litres/kW hour (3.18 gal/bhp/hr) at 16°C to 39.1 litres/kW hour (6.36 gal/bhp/hr) at 38°C inlet temp. Supply water pressure is dictated by torque and power to be absorbed and at maximum dynamometer capacity should be up to 2.75 bar.
