COMPUTER BASED DATA ACQUISITION AND EXPERIMENT PROCESSING SYSTEM

Giacomo Patrone P.C. Based Video Training system, suitable to be fitted on our Engine test units, steam turbine units, and almost on all our educational units, represents the application in the educational field of a modern industrial Data Acquisition and Processing system based on a normal Personal Computer. Due to its MODULAR configuration, it can be adapted in accordance to the quantity and quality of sensors and transducers installed in the particular process or system. Referring to our educational units experimental capabilities, all the experiments listed and operational parameters can be run and plotted by means of the Video Training system. The video training system allows: ¾ Theoretic description of the process ¾ Practical description of the operating process and of the plant operational sequence ¾ Data acquisition and recording of all the operational during the running of the plant ¾ Graphic processing ¾ Printing of the theoretic data and experiment results ¾ Step-by-step experiment processing with calculation and control of the results and of the correct operation of the plant INSTRUMENT SYSTEM The instrument system of the plant in which the data acquisition is installed is normally modified in order to receive the electric/electronic transducers necessary for the parameters acquisition. These transducers, are all precision sensors of industrial type and are chosen, in accordance to the particular need, among the following: ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾

Thermocouples PT100 temperature transducers Bridge resistance pressure transducers Strain gauge load cell Digital encoder Turbine flow meter Ultrasonic flow meter Venturi meter Electronic accelerometer (vibration)

These electronic transducers are normally added to the instruments and controls included in the plant in order to obtain a double check of the parameter under measuring and to have an immediate control of the instrument and a reference for its calibration and precision.

HARDWARE The hardware supplied can be of two main type: 1. With a PC inside data acquisition board and consequently it is composed by the following components and connected in accordance to the scheme showed below: ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾

Analogue signal conditioning control boards (interface modules) Multifunction analogue-to-digital data acquisition board - PC INSIDE (National Instrument or similar) Pentium Based P.C. Graphic board Colour monitor Printer

The sensors are supplied and conditioned by means of the Interface Modules. Subsequently, they are converted, from analogue to digital and handled, together with the I/O signals, by means of a PC inside Data Acquisition board interfaced directly on the internal BUS of the PC

2. A stand alone data acquisition system connectable through RS232 port, EPP, SCSI to a normal personal computes and it is composed by the following components and connected in accordance to the scheme below: ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾ ¾

The sensors are supplied and conditioned by means of the Interface Modules. Subsequently, they are converted, from analogue to digital and handled, together with the I/O signals, by means of the CPU The CPU (DSP) has the function of supervisor of the data acquisition system, and handles the data exchange to the PC via standard port (serial RS232, Enhancement Parallel Port EPP, or upon request, SCSI port).

DATA ACQUISITION, GRAPHIC PLOTTING AND EXPERIMENT PROCESSING SOFTWARE (WIN ’98-2000-NT BASED) Referring to our educational units in which the Video Training can be installed, an important notice is that the operation of each component or member of the mechanical system(i.e. the operation of a IC engine, the switch on of a pump to be tested , the control of a valve), is left to the operator in order to learn and acquire practical manual of governing the system, while the detection of each running and experimental parameters is made by means of the electronic instrument system and processed via a dedicated software. The educational data acquisition software of a standard type, is normally divided into two parts: 1. the data acquisition program (main program) 2. the educational processing of the parameters (Lessons) 1. The main program, for every of our educational units, is normally designed with a first page instruction that shows step-by-step how to run and operate manually the system, with safety warnings and warm up procedures. Subsequently, in the main page, the main working parameters and control measurements of the process are displayed. The schematic circuit of the system with all the sensors indicated with the instant value measured is showed in a separate page. In accordance to particular features of the system of sub-systems, several auxiliary pages for particular part or process can be added. This is the main data acquisition program to run the unit and by means of which it is possible to detect, save or print all the operational parameters of the process, and it is the program that normally runs during the operation of the unit.

2. With the "Lessons" program (the educational processing of the parameters), by loading the data saved during the acquisition and system operation, it is possible to run step by step all the experiments listed in the data sheets of our educational unit (refer to each educational unit technical data sheet) This program can be also installed in different PC not connected to the data acquisition system and it is very useful for teaching activity without running the unit. The experiment to be run is chosen among the available list and the theoretical description of the process is displayed together with the operational sequence to be followed to run the plant. The parameters involved are displayed even in the graphical form and the experiment results are automatically calculated in order to supply both to the teacher and to students an immediate verification of the experiment activity.
