EDITOR’S LETTER

It’s About Time You Changed

T

here’s nothing better than following your passion. Whatever sets your soul on fire, that’s what you should be doing: Right here, right now. As many of us settle into our careers

and family-lives, some of us seem to forget this. It’s one of the reasons why having a team with a fresh crew of new staff is key to reminding us why we are doing what we do in the first place. And that’s why we wanted to give a moment to hairstylists, nail and makeup artists who are revving up their salons and keeping their career paths on the rise. Let’s be honest, in our fast-paced and ever-changing industry, a hairstylist today could become one of tomorrow’s top educators. So, we went coast to coast to find out exactly how some of the nation’s best up-and-coming artists are making it happen. Making change happen isn’t only an action for youth. It is in fact, timeless. No one proves how you can reinvent yourself at any age more than Tracey Hughes. From her work as an international artist, to owning salons, to developing her education platform, it seems like Hughes has done it all. And when a sudden shift of life-plans gave her an unexpected chance to reinvent herself once again, she made the most of it. Along with profiling some pretty outstanding artists, we’re also giving you a snapshot of how to make the move to gender neutral pricing. Many salons have already made the switch, so if yours made a seamless transition. Along with all the business advice and team motivation, we’ve also rounded up the best hair inspo from around the globe. Think of it all as a way to make a change, just in time for spring!

Get with It Out with the old and in the new! We’re breaking down the top mani “cures” to elevate your nail services to the next level. 1. SKIP THE SOAK As most nails techs now know, soaking hands in water before a manicure is an archaic method that can do more harm than good, since it temporarily alters the size and shape of the nail bed. CURE: CND CoolBlue water-free cleanser and CND CuticleAway cuticle remover “CoolBlue is a gentle hand sanitizer, so I recommend incorporating it into all of your services so both the nail tech and client get the sanitiation benefits,” says Jennifer Mather, business development manager for CND Canada. “CuticleAway is also great because it helps release all of the dead skin around the cuticle area.”

Royal Treatment With the royal wedding just around the corner, help your clients achieve and maintain luxurious locks with hair treatments.

F

rom Kate Middleton to Meghan Markle, the royal women have mastered the look of rich (no pun intended) and healthy hair colour. According to Middleton’s long-time hairstylist, Richard

Ward, the Duchess of Cambridge relies on nourishing treatments to maintain her smooth, shiny locks. But what does it take to give your clients the “royal treatment?” We asked two hair experts for their tips on creating fit-for-a-queen looks.

PREPPING THE BASE It’s a known fact: The healthier the hair, the better the colour. But healthy hair can be hard to come by, especially when some clients are changing their hair colour almost as often as they change their clothes! To transform hair from damaged to divine, Revlon Professional’s Be Fabulous Hair Recovery In-Salon Treatment is a four-step keratinenriched system for repairing and strengthening damaged hair. “It’s one treatment for all hair types,” says Vicky Filiatrault, technical development specialist for Revlon Professional. “We begin with a diagnosis of the client’s hair, and based on the results we decide how many treatments are required for a full recovery of the hair.” The Be Fabulous treatment begins with Step 1—Open Cuticle Shampoo and is followed by Step 2—Keratin Mask, which is applied with a brush before hair is wrapped and set under a dryer for 20 to 30 minutes. Once the hair is rinsed, it’s shampooed again with Step 3— Cuticle Sealer Shampoo before rinsing and applying the Step 4—Keratin Conditioner. “The great thing about the treatment is that hair feels brand new, like it’s never been coloured,” she says. “And the effect can last for

TAKING THE PLUNGE Shannon Simmonds, a Joico guest artist and owner of On the Fringe Hair Design in Vancouver, agrees that reconstructing hair first is especially important for clients that want to undergo a significant colour change. “Blonde has been big for so long, so if clients want a darker, richer, chocolatey colour, you need to reconstruct the hair beforehand, so you’ll get that rich result without it being too opaque or muddy.” When it comes to colouring, Simmonds recommends Joico’s Lumishine, a liquid demi-permanent colour that is intermixable. “Lumishine is very reflective and has arginine, an amino acid that improves hair’s health, so the result is very rich and shiny,” she says, and adds that it’s important to remember to create depth and dimension in dark brunette colour to prevent it from looking too opaque.

“For a level five or six brunette who loves her hair colour and just wants to boost it a bit, you can use a demipermanent in chrome and add a bit of copper to it. As long as the formulation is one or two levels lighter than her natural tone, you won’t be changing the level of her hair, but you’re adding a bit of copper or gold to pump it up.” — SHANNON SIMMONDS, A JOICO GUEST ARTIST AND OWNER OF ON THE FRINGE HAIR DESIGN IN VANCOUVER

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT More and more, cropped cuts are trending and many of your clients may want to take the plunge. Here’s help on showing them how. By Anna Lee Boschetto

W

ith short textured hair ruling the runways and red carpets of late, we caught up with some of the top hairstylists for their advice on how these looks

translate for your clients. While it’s similar to the cycle of trends from the early ’90s—when hair went from longer textured looks to shorter hairstyles—the current short-hair trend is led by social media influencers who are making this look appear even more approachable for your clients.

ONE: TAKE A HINT

not the style will require more or less styling and more trips to the salon, make sure you walk them through what they can expect when it comes to at-home maintenance.” — Kristjan Hayden, creative director for Aveda Canada.

TWO: SHAPE OF THINGS “With a shorter haircut, the silhouette and shape is shown through the cut, so you can’t plan too many design elements to it. When it comes to creativity, a short haircut is already a big focus, so you need to think about the elements in the finished look. If there are too many, it won’t work.” — Sherman Wong, creative director for Wella Canada

THREE: DETAIL ORIENTATION “With short haircuts, it’s really about refined details that are maybe not as dramatic, while also keeping in mind that there are things that you can do to change up the look or style. Some clients may want a change in subtle ways, whereas some want more drama. Make sure you have a thorough consultation with them first.” — Jorge Joao, international artist for Redken Canada

FOUR: BE FEARLESS “Talk about their face shape, body and personal style, and base your recommendation on what you think would work and complement them. If there is still not much anxiety from them, in terms of them wondering if they will like it, and if they can work with it, give them as much information as you can and leave the final decision up to them.” — Sherman Wong, creative director for Wella Canada

FIVE: FRINGE BENEFITS “Make recommendations about specific details, including a fringe, along with how to style it. Sometimes, people have thick, textured hair, which may be a lot to work with for a shorter cut. Having a fringe, even on a longer haircut, is a great way for someone to test out the look of a short haircut without the long-term commitment.” — Kristjan Hayden, creative director for Aveda Canada

SMALL TOWN, BIG DREAMS Working as a hairstylist for nearly two decades, Pede opened InStyle Salon & Spa in the small town of Aylmer, Ont. in 2007. “We needed a full-service salon that provided a big city feel in a small town,” she says. “It took me some time to build the type of team that I wanted, with people that had the same interests as me, and we all have that drive to do photoshoots and competitions.” When it came to entering the Texture category, Pede says it was purely serendipitous. “I shot the collection thinking I was going to enter the Ontario and Canadian Colourist categories, but as I was looking at my collection, I thought the photos could fit into Texture, so I sort of fell into it,” she says. “I find that with Texture, you can be super creative because everything needs to be big and really out there.”

While Pede now has a few Contessa competitions under her belt, she still recalls the times she attended the awards to support her peers. “One of them was Rossa Jurenas [a multiple Contessa winner and Schwarzkopf Professional’s North American colour director].

She was basically the one who showed me what the Contessas were all about,” says Pede. “I get a lot of inspiration from fellow stylists. I had gone to the Contessas for a few years without competing, and the moment you get there you realize that’s what you want to do.” “Photoshoots are outside the box of what I do every day at the salon. I love my breadand-butter clients, but the things you do in a shoot are much more creative and give you that realm of free expression that you can’t get behind the chair.”

SALON PROFILE

The Mother of Reinvention As Tracey Hughes discovered, turning your dreams into reality can be as easy as never looking back. By Anna Lee Boschetto

A

s a young British hairstylist in the 1980s, Tracey Hughes was given the opportunity to teach, and she took it without thinking twice. “When you are young you naturally say yes, and I think having that experience very

early on influenced my career,” she says. From there, Hughes set out to travel the world, falling in love with Australia and making it her home for more than 20 years. With the award-winning success of her salons, working as a guest artist for multiple manufacturers, and the launch of her education brand, she continues to push boundaries—and she’s not done yet. We caught up with Hughes to find out how she stays motivated and on top of her game while continuing to reinvent herself.

Salon Magazine: How did the concept of Tracey Hughes Education come about?

Tracey Hughes: When I opened my salon, Mieka, I had established myself as a guest artist with a focus on education. With the salon, I built a culture centered on education and I wanted my team to have a strong technical and customer service focus. When I became a brand artistic director, I had the opportunity to work in different countries and after stepping out of that role, I really wanted to focus on education through my own brand, Tracey Hughes Education. With the experience I have in training more than half a million hairstylists worldwide, I wanted to bring that focus to train other educators. Now I run an educator training program, and work with stylist teams and education teams.

SM: How important is it to make the right connections no matter what stage you are at in your career?

TH: Even though I have a profile and have been working in and out of multiple countries, I still get to know the stylists. Doing main stage shows gives people a chance to get to know me and I always make an effort to meet the audience, no matter how big or small the show is. It’s amazing; the more that I understand hairstylists on a personal level, the more I can find out what the industry needs right now. If you have the privilege of coaching and motivating others, you naturally want to create the human connection. Right now, the industry is missing that really solid connection with other people. No one should feel they aren’t good enough. This is

SM: How do you define success? TH: Success is very different for everyone. I think a lot of what I have is determination; I’ve fought through personally and professionally tough times, and I have this hunger and I aspire to never give up. My husband says I’m a bit odd because I

never give up. I’m high energy and I rely on that. Even when things get tough, I can coach myself through it. I also remind myself to stay present in the moment and not to look too far ahead. You just have to keep pushing through and surround yourself with good. You have to have the combination of communication, technical and care skills, and not let fear or self-doubt hold you back.

SM: You have had some amazing success but it hasn’t all been easy for you. Can you tell us about that?

TH: When I sold my salons a few years ago to a corporate company, I thought it would be a great opportunity to create consumer awareness of our industry. I sat on the board of directors [of the corporate company], spent time making the decision to roll my salon in with this company, and then decided I could bring up my education. Six weeks after the sale, I was made redundant. After having very profitable salons for 18 years and putting so many years of development into my team who were like family for me, those were very dark days. Thankfully, I still had education commitments to uphold and that’s what got me through.

SM: How did you keep yourself focused during those tough times?

TH: It took every ounce of strength I had to stand on the stage after what happened, but it’s also what kept me going. The people I taught—seeing them developing a new skill—it was a light bulb moment for me. We all have challenges through life. The fact that I could help people during my tough time was key. Also, when there were days that I wasn’t feeling motivated, I exercised and focused on looking after myself physically, and I found that helped me stay energized and in a positive mindset.

SM: Tell us about your work and development of Leading Ladies. TH: I’m proud to be the founder of Leading Ladies. I wanted to celebrate women in our industry who were making a difference, women who were making a bit of a disruption. Our industry is more than 85 per cent female, but there are a lot of men who are at the top as decision-makers from a corporate aspect, especially. Women go through challenges that other women understand, and while having a balance of career and family isn’t new, we are trying to heighten awareness of it. Each woman represents a different aspect of the industry, which includes focuses on education, social media influence and business. With Leading Ladies, we share business advice but it’s also about making people realize that life on the road is not that glamorous when there are things that you still need to overcome.

Tracey Hughes sharing her insight and skills on stage.

SM: What would you tell your younger self? TH: To think about more security. I am very much a risk-taker and I embrace change, but sometimes having a bit more security is a good thing. Also, I would say that you don’t need to be so independent. Ask for help and support more.

SALON BUSINESS

PRICE IS RIGHT Gender fluidity in fashion and beauty has been on industry radar for a couple of years. Now, gender-neutral pricing is hitting the salon industry. We break down what it means for your business.

L

ast year, Fady Assaad, owner of Hair Junkie in Ottawa, was one of the first beauty business entrepreneurs in Canada to implement a gender-neutral pricing strategy.

What was the motive behind the change in price structure for his successful salon? “For years, people complained about the laundry business. Why should a woman’s blouse be more expensive to clean than a man’s shirt? It’s the same thing for hair,” says Assaad. “If the client is spending more time in your chair, they should just be charged more. It’s that simple. So, hair length (and not gender) is now the deciding factor in our pricing strategy.” Because Hair Junkie is also a Summit salon (where there are up to five stylist levels), pricing also reflects these levels of expertise. For example, a cut for short hair can vary between $30 to $65, depending on the level of the hairstylist.

A WELCOME CHANGE In Toronto, Dat Salon also implemented this new “genderless” pricing strategy earlier this year. And there, too, pricing is set according to hair length and a combination of years of

“The idea was to create more equality for our clientele,” he says, “of being able to accept and implement current changes that are happening in our environment. The reaction from our clients has been very positive.” Same thing at Hair Junkie, where existing clients love the fact that they can now drop in for a super quick 15-minute free (yes,

SALON INTERIORS

The Making of an “Icon” This business savvy Edmonton salon owner is redefining the role of traditional salon owner. BY VERONICA BOODHAN

A

t Icon Hair & Body in downtown Edmonton, you won’t find the salon’s owner, Christina Aitchison, behind the chair. In fact, she’s never worked a single day as a hairstylist.

Instead, with her background in marketing and business, Aitchison dedicates herself solely to the growth and development of her business and team. “I run everything from staff meetings and team development to front-desk and marketing,” she says. “I am passionate about growing our people and salon, and creating a great work environment for our team. It’s important to me to empower them to be creative and to hone in on their skills. I let them be the artist and it’s my role to support them.” While Aitchison has professional beauty experience as a makeup artist, it was her business acumen that helped grow her business from a hair salon to a hair salon and spa. In 2015, the salon was rebranded to Icon Hair & Body, and offers a range of hairstyling, nail and spa services, and caters to a large bridal and male clientele.

RISING UP The rebranding included a two-phase renovation, which was completed earlier this year. Aitchison and her contractor worked with existing elements of the space while she (with input from her salon team) elevated the décor—everything from the fixture choices to paint colours—to create a welcoming environment for both her staff and clients. “My main goal was to utilize our space better and increase our revenue potential,” she says. “As a business, sometimes you can get so wrapped up in the look and feel for the client, but at the end of the day we have to make sure it makes sense revenue- and total to eight), Aitchison also added a four-person pedicure bench to boost profits. To enhance the salon’s service areas, she upgraded the flooring and shampoo area, which now features four backwash sinks. The salon has also incorporated two makeup stations, two manicure stations, two treatment rooms and a vast retail space.
