EDITOR’S LETTER
SHOWTIME
THE WINNING 2006 CONTESSA COLLECTIONS are showcased in this issue, our annual Contessa collector’s edition. The excitement and anticipation culminated at the gala night of celebration on November 13 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, where the winners of the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards were announced. In addition to the winners’ collections you will also find images showcasing the thrills and spirit of the night. We’ve captured it all, from the red carpet interviews and dinner, the Team Contessa show and awards ceremonies, to the acceptance speeches and backstage rush. It was truly heartwarming to see the entire industry come together to celebrate the achievements of all the winners and finalists. Congratulations to all of this year’s entrants, winners, finalists and semifinalists on a job well done. Salon Magazine appreciates the commitment you have made when it comes to entering the Contessas; from researching themes, planning, trial runs and the final photo shoot. With hundreds of entries, you should all be very proud of the recognition of your work. Consumer media coverage of the Contessas is another positive highlight for finalists and winners. Aside from the excitement of gaining media fame, it often helps generate new business for the entrants and the salons where they work. We will highlight some of the coverage in the March issue of Salon Magazine. Putting together the Contessas takes a lot of planning and ongoing work all year. Brainstorming sessions and consultations have already begun for Contessa 18. We look forward to another great year of entries. On a personal note, this issue marks my first anniversary as editor here at Salon Magazine. It’s been an exciting time for me. Learning so much more about the beauty business by meeting and interviewing many of you for editorial stories has been a huge part of that. Thank you all. I look forward to many more opportunities in the coming year. My best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2006 to everyone.

I DON’T KNOW HOW our editors do it every year. Knowing who the Contessas winners are and having to keep that poker face day after day with the many inquisitive phone calls is quite something. It would kill me—those who know me know I’m quite expressive. So I ask our team not to tell me who the winners are as I love being as surprised as everyone else is on the big night. And often I share in the disappointment. At the gala, when I addressed our guests, I spoke about the courage it takes to compete. How vulnerable the entrants are to put themselves on the line, to have their peers critique their work. Not an easy thing to do. To quote Robert Frost, the great poet and Pulitzer Prize winner, “Courage is the human virtue that counts most—courage to act on limited knowledge and insufficient evidence. That’s all any of us have.” Everyone has different reasons for entering the Contessas. Whether it’s the love of competition, wanting a new challenge, or establishing yourself in a new country, as Adriana Balea, winner of Makeover Colourist of the Year and Ontario Hairstylist of the Year, did this year. Contessa entrants share their wonderful spirit of competition that so many of us love and admire. Just entering a competition is a huge contribution to the fabric of the Canadian professional beauty industry. These entrants help set a standard that many hairstylists, nails techs and makeup artists aspire to. As well, collectively all these entrants have put Canada on the map as a country that has some of the most creative and talented beauty professionals. For all this, I tip my hat to all Contessa entrants. Thank you for your dedication to our craft—for your foresight and energy through the competitive process. And bless you for your courage. Finally, I would like to thank the sponsors of Contessa 17. Your demonstrated commitment to all the beauty professionals who participated is very much appreciated by everyone.

CONTESSA
2006
CANADIAN HAIRSTYLIST RASA JURENAS On the Monday after the Contessa gala, 29 year-old Rasa Jurenas spent a good portion of the day visiting and revisiting beautynet.com’s winners’ gallery. The girl just could not believe it. Had she actually won Canadian Hairstylist of the Year? Yes, Rasa, the title is yours—enjoy riding that wave. What makes victory even sweeter for Rasa is that she truly won on her own skill and creativity. From the collection’s concept to the cuts, colour, makeup and wardrobe, she did it all. Although her technique is clean, her range impressive, and her use of colour stimulating and engaging, the most pungent element in Rasa's work is its clear and compelling message: hair is a powerful catalyst for individuality and self-expression.
CANADIAN SALON TEAM VALENTINO’S GRANDE SALON George Tsinokas and his staff are still reeling from their victory. It seems like the models in their collection aren’t the only ones in the fast lane...Valentino’s Grande Salon is on a one-way trip to the top. After overcoming many adversities that plagued the photo shoot, like postponing it, losing models and having to work on his wife’s birthday, the end result could not have been better. And it was made all the more worthwhile, when the next morning Tsinokas’s daughters ran into their classrooms raving about their father’s work. Congratulations!

ELITE MASTER HAIRSTYLIST SUZANNE MARTIN Forget trendy, edgy, raw and sexy. These words are no good here. Inside the angelic world created by Suzanne Martin for her winning Elite Master Hairstylist collection, soft, whimsical beauty reigns supreme. Reminiscent of Renaissance artistry, Martin’s work is a masterful execution of her seasoned technical skill, an inspiring demonstration of her 30 years of experience.

CONTESSA 2006 MAKEOVER COLOURIST AND ONTARIO HAIRSTYLIST ADRIANA BALEA A seasoned hairstylist and salon owner for 12 years in her native Romania, Adriana Balea’s arrival in Canada forced her to start a whole new life. Hired by Johnny and Anita Cupello, she began working as an assistant and junior stylist during her first year in Toronto. Today, she cannot thank Johnny Cupello enough. “He gave me chance,” she says. And who could ask for more? Isn’t opportunity all that talented people need?
TEXTURE HAIRSTYLIST CAM PATEY Cam Patey wants to rule the world. Fresh off scooping his fourth Contessa and after 10 years of hairstyling, Patey is off to Australia to study fashion design. “I am hoping to pursue an all-encompassing way of doing hair, fashion, makeup and photography. Ultimately, I want a more diverse career where I can do everything from hair to shoes to accessories.” A many textured man indeed, Patey’s latest work is featured in Goldwell’s Trend Zoom collection for 2006, due out in February.
MAKEUP ARTIST
CONTESSA 17 GALA PHOTOS MARK MCNEILLY AND ALBERTO ESPINAL; THACKERY BY RAYMOND BAILEY
SABRINA FERRI Sabrina Ferri is a sweet lady by all accounts. She dreams of being an inspiration to her son, adores working side-by-side with her husband and is most gratified when she makes someone else feel beautiful. But ask her about her craft and you’ll see another side of her—the meticulous, hard-working artist who will not put down her brushes until every line is the way she intends and every gradation of colour and value is blended to glowing perfection.
NAIL ART TECHNICIAN JESSICA-MARIE ELLISON Jessica-Marie Ellison is an artist. And, like many artists before her, she feels her work is often misunderstood. Nail art need not be tacky, outdated and tawdry, she argues. It can be modern, sophisticated, striking and whole lot of girly fun. Her proof? Well, she presents it beautifully in her winning entry.
NAIL ENHANCEMENT ARTIST RHEANNE THACKERAY She’s a perfectionist and a natural at doing nails. Could there be a better combination for a nail enhancement artist? Perhaps that is why Rheanne Thackeray’s work is precise, seamless and seemingly effortless. Striking enough to spark interest, yet totally free of gimmicks and frills, Thackeray offers a pure, clean and confident collection. january+february 06 < s a l o n

CONTESSA 2006 SESSION HAIRSTYLIST MARIO VERRILLI With a Contessa win and a honeymoon in Costa Rica, Mario Verrilli is having the month of his life. Beginning his career as a session stylist with Elmer Olsen Model Management and eventually styling Daria Werbowy’s hair for Flare magazine, Verrilli was well on his way. Add a Contessa to the list, and his goal of having creative freedom during a magazine shoot might soon become reality.
AVANT GARDE HAIRSTYLIST ROBERT CORY When Robert Cory says, “I feel good!” over the phone a couple of days after the Contessa gala, you can almost picture him breaking into song à la James Brown. That is the type of energy and enthusiasm he conveys. It’s no wonder that Cory is a winner in the most unconventional category; creativity seems to flow from his every word. And still he had no expectations. “When they announced my name, I looked at my photographer and asked, ‘Was that us?’”
MULTICULTURAL HAIRSTYLIST HOLLIE KENDALL Hollie Kendall knows that a successful hairstyle has a lot to do with the character of the person who wears it. “That’s why I don’t use professional models in photo shoots,” she says. “It’s all about personality. And I like to do hair that matches the personality of the wearer.” For this reason, Kendall always keeps her eyes open for those with individualistic styles. It not only gets her creative juices flowing, it gives her living, breathing and original material to work with.

PAUL PEREIRA When Paul Pereira walked up on stage to accept his award, he got blinded by the bright lights and nearly choked with enthusiasm. If you ask him to repeat his thank you speech, he doesn’t remember a thing, but he’s ecstatic to have won. For Pereira, who’s been in the industry since 1992, being recognized by his peers is a great honour. “When you’re an artist you strive to be the best at what you do.” Next step? Going for the gold: Canadian Hairstylist of the Year!
NEWCOMER HAIRSTYLIST KAREN MELAY Only three years out of school and Karen Melay is making more than waves in St. John’s. Her motto: Don’t try to be someone else. Just be yourself and do your thing. Luckily, hair is exactly Melay’s thing. “Every day I can do something different, so I never get bored” she says. “Even when I go home at night, I talk to my friends about hair colour, placement, cuts, the works…I just love it.”
STUDENT/APPRENTICE HAIRSTYLIST RUDY PIGNATARO Be forewarned: there’s a lot more where this came from. For Rudy Pignataro, this is only the beginning—an obvious fact that one picks up on simply by conversing with the young hairstylist. He’s ambitious, focused and, by the looks of his winning entry, has the ability to materialize his creative vision. Talk about a great career start for a guy who’s just finished his schooling. january+february 06 < s a l o n

ATLANTIC HAIRSTYLIST
CONTESSA 2006
CINDY HUDSON Cindy Hudson always wanted to be a hairstylist, but she had very bad asthma as a child, and thought she would never be able to work in a salon. At 29 she started working parttime as a shampoo girl to fill a void left from a boyfriend who went to Asia to teach. “After a year, I was burning out, so I decided that I loved it too much and couldn’t leave it. I started over from scratch. It was hard. My boss was a bit skeptical at first, but then I started winning some competitions. I challenge myself constantly.”
QUEBEC HAIRSTYLIST ANNIE BOUCHER It’s a bird, it’s a plane….no, it’s Annie Boucher who ran and leapt onto the stage when she finally realized that indeed, they were calling her name. And first thing off the stage, she called her boyfriend to announce the good news. A new member of the Guylaine Martel Artistes Coiffeurs team, she begins with a bang! She has every intention of continuing to compete, especially with the inspiration and motivation that exists among her new colleagues. She believes that that is what keeps you alive in hairstyling.
SASKATCHEWAN/MANITOBA HAIRSTYLIST KELLY HUNTER The longer you observe Kelly Hunter’s seemingly simplistic collection, the more you appreciate its depth and carefully calculated structure. Through strategic placement of gentle subtleties, Hunter adds another dimension to the power of minimalism and geometrics.
ALBERTA HAIRSTYLIST JEFF LOUIS
PHOTO MARK MCNEILLY AND ALBERTO ESPINAL, LOUIS BY CHRISTY DEAN
On the first day of school the instructor pulled Jeff Louis aside and told him hairstyling is not for everyone. At that point Louis had burned his hands several times with a curling iron and his mannequin was smoking. Everything was going wrong. But he stayed with it. “Last year I was a finalist in the Men’s Hairstylist of the Year category and it really helped boost my career, in session work especially. It’s been great. When I shoot for a client, they have the final say, but with the Contessas I have total creative freedom.”
ONTARIO HAIRSTYLIST AND MAKEOVER COLOURIST ADRIANA BALEA Adrian Balea tells the story with pride. “The first time I went to the Contessas, during my first year in Canada, I said ‘I will make it up on that stage one day, I promise.’” And actually, she fulfilled her promise twice in one night. Balea is not only this year’s Ontario Hairstylist of the Year, but also 2006 Makeover Colourist, see collection page 30.
BRITISH COLUMBIA HAIRSTYLIST LIZ COLLEY Liz Colley felt so honoured to be among the finalists with such strong work coming out of British Columbia that she was quite shocked when she actually won. But it sure was great to be the one. Expect to see more of her in the Canadian competition scene. She plans to continue working with photography and creating beautiful collections. january+february 06 < s a l o n

SHE JUST TURNED 40... she looks into the mirror and says she looks old... it will take more than flowers and a new hair cut to make this a happy day! The depletion of hyaluronic acid is a major contributor to the many signs of aging. As we get older, our bodies produce less HA. Production starts to diminish around age 20, so when we hit 40, it is common to start seeing wrinkles appear. NOBODY WANTS TO LOOK OLD... why not tell her about a new, natural and painless anti-aging and rejuvenation system that some salons and even doctors are recommending:
“As a physician, I am not interested in commercial advertisement of any product, but I can say that I carry VIVI-S Formula Hair and Skin Program in my office. I have seen impressive testimonials of clients who have used it for their hair and face improvement. Here for the first time is a rejuvenation system that provides fantastic effects in one all-inclusive package.” Dr. Robert Backstein, MD FRCS(C) Plastic Cosmetic Surgeon, Toronto www.cosmeticsurgerytoronto.com “I’ve been a professional hairstylist for the past 40 years. A year ago, I purchased VIVI-S Formula Hair and Skin System. I am excited about your amazing product. My hair has new growth and my skin feels smoother and firmer. My customers who are using the product also find a lot of improvement in their hair and skin. I wish that I had found you sooner. As a hairstylist, I use and recommend VIVI-S Formula.” Muriel Nronda, Professional Hairstylist. Toronto
Visit www.vivisformula.com or call 1.866.909.0019 to learn about this revolutionary anti-aging system and how you can make it available to your clients.
VIVI-S FORMULA is only sold through medical clinics, PROFESSIONAL SALONS and SPAS.

SPECTACULAR BEAUTY
2006 CANADIAN SALON INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE YEAR - MOOD BY PURE Mood by Pure is elegant and modern at the same time, and nothing short of impressive. Located in Montreal’s Hotel Godin, a building originally constructed in 1914, the salon gives a modern twist to this historical site. Boasting floorto-ceiling windows that allow natural light to fill the room, and lustrous white furniture, the space is clean and inviting, as much urban design as it remains Art Nouveau. Simply put, Rocco Campanaro is driven and compassionate. He is a man of action who exudes energy and immediately grabs your attention. Acting on his desire to make a difference, Campanaro and his team at Axcess Salon + Spa have been organizing charity golf tournaments for 15 years in support of a variety of causes. Mima Carone, of Mima’s Hair Design in Richmond Hill, has known Campanaro for those 15 years. “I have a lot of respect for Rocco,” she says. “We have worked together on many different projects. He is a great leader and deserves to be recognized for it.” This year, Campanaro and his team decided to do something different. They gathered 10 other salon teams and put on the firstever Glamour Do to benefit the Alzheimer Society of York Region, a cause dear to Campanaro’s heart in light of his father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s. “The event was unique because it brought together 10 salons in a friendly, fun environment where we could all help raise money for a very worthy cause. The salons were asked to not consider it a competition, because of the nature of the event,” says Campanaro. The salons who participated were: Axcess; Antonio Hair Spa Salon in Mississauga; Centre Stage Salon in Thornhill; Dupals Salon and Spa in Mississauga and Hamilton; Fiorio in Richmond Hill; Mima’s Hair Design in Richmond Hill; Salon Massimo in Richmond Hill; Scruples Salon in Woodbridge; Static Studio Inc. in Thornhill; and Valentino’s Grande Salon in Whitby. Marca College Hair and Esthetics School brought 10 students to do complimentary hand and shoulder massage’s for the evening. About 250 people attended the event and silent auction. Over $30, 000 was raised in support of the Alzheimer Society. Congratulations on a great event for a worthy cause!

TEAM CONTESSA
That’s
GLAMOURAMA! We heard it a few times while we were preparing for the show: so what does that mean, Glamourama? Well, on Contessa night we answered that question. Glamourama means glamour in all its forms. From the exuberance of Las Vegas to the mega-power of hip hop, the excess of Studio 54 and the shining lustre of gold, Glamourama offers something for anyone with a taste for the good life and a joie de vivre.
