TO ME, THERE’S NOTHING AS MOVING as the humble acceptance speeches of winners. They are usually shocked and overcome with elation and emotion. You can see the truth of who they are in their response to hearing their name called. These factors came to a head when we unveiled the finalists’ collections and crowned the winners of the 2007 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards. Woodbridge, Ontario’s Frank Dicintio is riding a high like no other after that Sunday night on November 12 when he took home the Contessa for Makeover Colourist, Elite Master Hairstylist and Canadian Hairstylist of the Year. Dicintio, speaking very humbly, made the trip to the podium three times to be honoured for his work. He also paid homage to his entire salon team, who he says inspire him every day. Check out his collection on page 20. The team from the Hair Factory in St. John’s, Newfoundland, took home the Contessa for Canadian Salon Team of the Year. An ecstatic Dale Abbott spoke on behalf of her team, saying they have been finalists in this same category for 14 years. “We never gave up,” said Abbott. “We always knew that being a finalist meant we were up there with the best of the best. This year we got the privilege to take the Contessa home. I am so proud of our team. This has renewed my passion for this industry. What a reward!” These two stories are just a sample of the excitement that was the Contessa 18 gala. Thanks to Team Contessa participants, the theme of global beauty was a huge hit as well, with performances throughout the cocktail reception and during the show highlighting— among others—African, Indian, Spanish, Thai and Ukrainian dance, fashion and hair. The salute to Canadian First Nations up-and-coming fashion designers Daniel Jones and Chessa Syrette brought a huge round of applause. To the delight of the crowd, the presentation by the Saco team showcased the latest in cut and colour coming out of London these days. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners this year. Believe it or not, I’ve already had calls about Contessa 19—you can never start too early! Maybe you will find some new inspiration within the winning collections here. I hope you enjoy them all. I wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2007.

WHAT A GREAT NIGHT for the Canadian professional beauty industry. It’s what we had waited for with high anticipation all year—who would get to take Contessa home? Just because the hardware has been given out, don’t think the work is done! Now it’s time to move into the fine art of self-promotion. Winning is only half of the success formula. To truly get the maximum benefit from your hard work, publicizing it is the other. With this strategy you can bring more financial success to you and your salon. I’ve always said you can have a great product in a bottle, but if you don’t market it it’s just going to sit there. In other words, you’ve got to let the public know about your win. Donna-Lee Langton of Langton Communications, a leading PR company in our industry, offers this advice: “Don’t delay events are exciting as they occur, so the time to send an announcement is now.” She also suggests preparing a bio and doing a press release explaining the influences and direction of your work. Burn a number of CDs showcasing your winning collection. Contessa Session Hairstylist winner Martin Hillier says, “Don’t be shy about PR. We’re all about meeting people, networking and building a clientele. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get published right away. Send PR on a regular basis and the media will become familiar with you. If space opens up, you could be an editor’s top pick simply because you’ve been consistent. Remember, whether you’re a winner or a semi-finalist, you’re in the top five to 10 beauty pros in your category, and that’s worth talking about. Start with local media first.” There are many other creative and inexpensive ways to create the buzz and maximize it all year, from displaying your trophies in the salon, targeted signage, emailing clients and being conscious of using your win in every promotional piece you do through the year—from Valentine’s to back-to-school. As producers of the Contessas, Salon Magazine also conducts a huge PR drive to ensure that not just winners but also finalists get noticed. Press releases with finalists’ names went out in October. As well, over 35 media outlets attend the event every year, and another mailing, including CDs of the winning work, is done to all major media—local, national and international. It’s a new year and a critical time to plan your strategy to ensure your success for 2007. Happy new year!

hen a hockey player scored three goals in one game, fans used to throw their hats on the ice in honour. That’s the way it was back in the 40s. Frank Dicintio has just scored three Contessa wins in one year. Hats off to Frank! “To be a finalist for seven Contessa Awards is in itself an honour. To actually have won three is a trip,” says Dicintio. “I am humbled to have my work recognized within the company of such an elite group of fellow hairstylists, and these titles will drive me further towards reaching my fullest potential. When you are competing at this level, research and diversity in models is how you raise the bar. That evening was truly remarkable, and I cannot express enough the unbelievable sense of warmth that I felt from all the genuine wishes of congratulations. “Ultimately, these awards are dedicated to the memory of my wife, Lilly, my ultimate source of inspiration. Most of my life lessons have taught me to live by three words: faith, hope and love. Have faith in what you do, hope people acknowledge your efforts, and remember it’s love that guides us to love one another each day.”

fter 14 years as finalists for Salon Team of the Year, the Hair Factory in St. John’s, Newfoundland, reached the pinnacle on November 12 and finally took home the Contessa for this coveted category. Speaking for her team, co-owner Dale Abbott spoke with elation about the creativity thriving at Hair Factory, noting everyone’s pride and passion for their chosen profession. They lovingly dedicated their award to the memory of Locks Ley Hiscock, Abbott’s long-time business partner, who passed away this year just before the team did their shoot. “From the very beginning, we always wanted to win this category. We have always had such a strong and supportive team in our salon,” said Abbott excitedly over the phone. “I am so proud of the girls for this achievement. It has helped me find my passion again, and after such a tough loss, the salon is abuzz with laughter, excitement and fun, just like the old days.”

I mean, I felt really good about my work, but to relive the same moment two years in a row and win Newcomer Hairstylist of the Year again is pretty heavy stuff.” Then Melay went on to win Atlantic Hairstylist of the Year as well. “To get to the top is one thing, to continue to stay there is a whole new ball game. I did part of my research in New York, because it’s such a tourist town. You get people from all over the world, so you’re seeing styles and trends from every corner of the globe. It’s just great for inspiration.”

In fact, this was Bennett’s first national competition, which she triumphantly won with a super-pretty, soft and delicate collection. Keeping an aura of softness by using a predominantly pale assortment of colours, Bennett manages to coordinate her work with that of her colleagues at the Hair Factory, a detail emphasizing the creative synergy of this salon team.

t may sound clichéd, but Multicultural Hairstylist of Year Rasa Jurenas was sincerely honoured just to be a finalist in this category. “We’re in Canada,” says Jurenas, alluding to the multicultural makeup of our nation, “and we shouldn’t be scared of the technical challenges that come with styling different types of hair textures.” Working with her trademark electric rainbow colour palette, Jurenas’ collection pushes the boundaries typically associated with coarse and darkly pigmented hair. Her collection depicts three beautiful, high-voltage looks that fuse and contrast with their rich sky-blue background.

She emphasizes the creative by surrounding herself with interesting people, books, magazines and an environment that is visually enhanced with fabrics, colours and art. Her new temporary home should help elevate Elliott to an even higher artistic level. She and Vault-co-worker Jane Tecson are in Chennai, India, for several months, training local hairstylists and setting up new salons for Vault. “Jane’s sister Janis, who also won a Contessa, was at the Awards and phoned us when I won. A huge cheer went up around the house.”

anis Tecson, Nail Enhancement Artist of the Year, makes you realize you can’t win a Contessa all on your own. She credits her models for inspiring her nail looks, which range from an aggressive, sword-like claw to a serene, Zen garden paradise. Then she speaks of her photographer, who helped her look beyond the nails themselves to see her collection as a whole. Tecson thanks her friends for being by her side during the long hours of prep work, and her boss at Vault Salon, Daren Jorgenson, for encouraging her and her colleagues to enter by financing the entire project. “Patience, commitment and a good support group,” explains Tecson, “that’s what it takes to win a Contessa.”

artin Hillier was surprised and honoured to win among such great talent. But most of all, he recognizes the importance of this category. “We are part of a massive industry,” he says. “When I look at the Vivienne Westwood or Alexander McQueen shows, the hair is making as big a statement as the clothing. The hair is what allows the look to be completed. To have that awareness in award shows is to acknowledge that we help shape fashion trends.”

P
assionate is the word that best describes Pignataro. The 25-year-old has taken his second Contessa in as many years, and recently joined his father and uncle in the salon they’ve owned for three decades. He went to college on a business scholarship and worked as a chef, but when he found himself burnt out, turned to the family business. “I hated hair at first,” he admits. “One day my girlfriend said, ‘If this is going to be your life, get inspired, get motivated.’ That was a turning point for me. I’m not going to stop—this is just the beginning.”
QUEBEC HAIRSTYLIST ÈVE PARR STUDIO 157 GATINEAU, QUEBEC
I
t was quite a week for this new mom and first-time Contessa winner. At home after giving birth just a week before, Ève Parr was unable to attend the awards ceremony, and found out she had won from a phone message left by a colleague during the night. Colours were an important part of her winning collection, but for now the stars in Ève's eyes are for her little bundle of joy, Josh. “He’s just so precious!” she gushes.

eneviève Dubois barely remembers anything from the night of the Contessas past her name being called out. All she knows is that she had a feeling this would happen, so she avoided drinking any wine during the evening and even reapplied lipstick before the category was presented. Call it a sixth sense; it ties in beautifully with her collection. She believes a good photo shoot should be a great conspiracy between the stylist, photographer, and makeup artist. It also helps when the models are your friends….

“When I put the collection together, a lot was going on in the world—two wars were under way. And, always, there are two ways to be inspired by times like these. You can do a more military, sombre photo shoot, or you can bring out the glamorous, sophisticated side of life as an escape. I chose to do the latter.” — Martin Hillier

S
hannon Simmonds owns two salons, both on university campuses. “We get younger clients here from all over the world,” she says, a fact that inspires her work to be edgier and more experimental. “I try to create feelings from cuts and colours.” Her secret to success? “I always work with what interests me.” What interests her now is expanding more into editorial work. “The photo shoot aspect is different from what you do in the salon. I want to push myself, see what I’m capable of.” Any other goals? “Oh yeah, Canadian Hairstylist of the Year.”

I
’m always looking for something new and different when I’m creating a collection,” says Tony Ricci, Alberta Hairstylist of the Year. Ricci, who gets his inspiration from art, film, fashion and magazines, develops a theme and creates storyboards prior to shooting for competitions like the Contessas. “Competing and winning doesn’t just stroke the ego, it’s an investment in the salon. It attracts clients and encourages staff to be better and better. Competition pushes us to a whole new level.” Not one to rest on his awards, Ricci is anticipating the North American Hairstyling Awards and the opening of his second salon.

espite Erin Fernandes’s self-proclaimed propensity to all things girly, her winning Ontario Hairstylist of the Year collection still projects that highly coveted cool factor, an effect the London-based stylist achieves with slashes of citrus, asymmetrical shapes and well-placed contrasting colour panels. Uniting the look of her photos with creative use of another ultra-feminine accessory—ribbon— Fernandes presents tight, simple beauty shots, allowing hair and makeup to take centre stage.

hough Susan Carter has been drawing her own hair styles since she was eight, it has taken her 21 years more to jump to the head of the class with her Contessa win. “I’m passionate and competitive. I want to be a star, to go as far in my career as possible.” Confident of her abilities, she was unsure of her chances of winning when she saw the competition. “The talent coming out these days is awesome. It’s really cool to see what other stylists are doing.”

He reached North America via Beirut, Paris, Turkey, Stockholm and Africa, working in salons the entire time. After years of eclectic collecting, he decided to go minimalist, both in his home and salon. “This Contessa was so important for me. Initially, many of my clients didn’t like the look of the salon.” But it was personal, because he had designed much of it himself. “My inspiration is Mies van der Rohe. DAYMAKERS Eccotique Aveda Spas and Salons helps make a better day for sick kids and the people who look after them
E
ccotique Aveda Spas and Salons hosted an extremely successful Fourth Annual Daymaker Day in Vancouver on April 11, 2006. This extraordinary people-pampering event touched the lives of over 250 children, parents and caregivers at the following facilities for children throughout the Lower Mainland: Ronald McDonald House, Easter Seal House, BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and SOS Children’s Village BC. Milajne Soligo, vice-president of Eccotique, loves to talk about Daymaker Day. “We went to the TSA symposium five years ago and listened to David Wagner talk about how his work behind the chair helped deliver a client from one of the darkest moments in her life without even realizing it. He later thought about the impact that someone in the beauty industry can have on people's everyday lives,” she says. “So we came back and asked ourselves what we could do to
Back row L-R: Rebecca Rye, Christina Bratus, Deborah Mooney, Antoni Smithic, Brandee Dodd. Front Row L-R: Kelsey Hinds, Kandice Savoy, Sue Ho, Angelina Lemay, Toba Bakhtiari
give back and change the lives of people in our community. We brainstormed and thought of kids with illnesses, both terminal and temporary, and the people who care for them.” Daymakers touched the lives of those challenged with health issues through complimentary stress-relieving treatments, nail polish applications, hand massages, haircuts, styling and makeup touchups. Over a hundred employees from all their Lower Mainland locations volunteered to make this event a success. Soligo adds, “We do tons of things throughout the year, but Daymaker Day is a very special one-day affair. When we get cards and letters from parents saying how much this program helped them, it is so heartwarming. And all we have to do is give up our time to make such a huge difference. “We all believe you have to give back to the people who support you daily in your business. Daymaker Day is one of our ways. We will certainly continue this program.”

e rolled out the red carpet once again this year for Canada’s finest beauty professionals at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, where guests, event sponsors and Contessa finalists (and eventual winners) came together to celebrate the formidable talent that exists in our industry. Between interviews with Tina Christopoulos and David Cormican, guests were regaled with dance performances inspired by cultures across the globe. Tahitian, Ukranian, Thai, flamenco and belly dancers all took turns on the platform during the cocktail reception to dazzle the guests and embody the theme of this year’s show, Global Beauty. They definitely looked the part with the help of Suzanne Martin, her team from Three Small Rooms and Mirella Rota Sementilli, who styled their hair and makeup, and Jennifer Mather and Jessica Ellison, who beautified their nails.

Then it was Saco’s turn. A new kid on the Canadian scene—the British group has recently opened its first North American academy in Montreal—Saco wowed the crowd with shiny geometric cuts and captivating tangerine lips. Working within the vision set by Richard Ashforth, one of Saco’s founding masterminds, Montreal stylists Katia Jananji and Aldo Furfaro led the team in this dazzling assault of precision cutting and colouring. ▼ ▼ FAROUK

Finally, the show closed with a taste of African style. Toronto-based dance company Ballet Creole performed to the sound of acoustic tribal drumming, setting the tone for a romantic yet fierce interpretation of African beauty. Christos Cox and his team from Urban Textures in affiliation with Serena Tamulynas, national educator and artistic director for Euro Naturals Hair Extensions, produced captivating, jaw-dropping styles. Wearing dresses from the sassy-chic Queen Street boutique F/X, models looked like princesses paying graceful homage to the bold African wilderness. ▼ CREATIVE NAIL DESIGN
