THE REDKEN 5TH AVEN REDKEN CANADA INTRODUCES

It’s not just A system... it’s THE system! Come see for yourself what over a thousand salon professionals have already discovered! The Summit brings the world of salon finance, salon culture and personal growth together like no other. From backroom politics to complex money issues, the Summit staff’s years of experience in the industry will help light the way toward renewed hope and prosperity. At the Redken Summit Salon Business College every thought we think, action we take, and word we speak, is made with only one intention in mind: To serve the highest and greatest good in everyone we lead. We are so confident in our program that we offer you a money-back guarantee. If at the end of a program you are not 100% satisfied, see us and we promise to refund the difference personally. www.summitsalon.com

THE SUMMIT JOURNEY Your 5-day Summit journey is designed to help you develop the skills to: Bring first and second year employees to a level of performance that greatly exceeds that of the average 5-10 year employee.

Drastically improve all facets of guest services. Implement a system to “grow your own” new employees and never again be held hostage. Breathe!

Empower your 5-10 year employees to break out of their rut, become high level team players and valuable mentors to your new employees.

CHANGE YOUR SALON, CHANGE YOUR CAREER, CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Create a growth oriented, team environment where your employees take responsibility for passing THE SUMMIT SYSTEM on to new team members.

In addition, your SUMMIT experience will help you discover the answers to these key questions…

Manage your business with a much higher degree of knowledge and understanding based on “the truth” rather than emotion. Dramatically improve your profit margin. Experience significant increases in staff retention, morale, focus and commitment.

Once you’ve built a profitable company, do you have a plan to ensure that it continues to grow and thrive after you’re gone? Are you growing “buyers” or just more headaches? How do you want to finish your experience in the salon industry?

January 2008

NUE BUSINESS REPORT THE REDKEN SUMMIT SALON BUSINESS COLLEGE

TESTIMONIALS Barb Morin & Jane Mayo, Wish Salon and Day Spa. Dartmouth, NS “As salon owners we realized that our business had reached a plateau. Although we were successful, there was a strong desire to move forward to grow and improve ourselves and our staff. Hence, at the suggestion of our Redken distributor, we spent 5 intense life changing days at the Redken Summit Salon Business College. Since then, we have committed to monthly training and have implemented a growth oriented system that has excited not only us but our staff as well. So far our growth has allowed us to begin renovations and we have already seen drastic changes in the growth of our business.” Robert Barbosa, Salon Escape. Toronto, ON “Thanks to Redken, I had the opportunity to discover the most essential program for today’s fast changing salon industry: the Redken Summit Salon Business College. It was an incredible experience, full of great information and valuable tools that all salon owners will benefit greatly from. There are always many different ways to

develop your salon and make it grow faster, and this program will help you find them.” Nina Katehos, The Hair Gallery. Alliston, ON “The Redken Summit Salon Business College helped us to create more tools to measure our results and performance. Thanks to this program, we managed to set goals for our team and then reach them properly, step by step. The educational team was fantastic; they were really supportive and it was very clear that they wanted us to succeed in improving our business.” Tony Ambrogio Jr., Hair Fantasy. London, ON “The Redken Summit Salon Business College was a fabulous experience. I went to other similar programs before, but they were very incomplete; it is one thing to hear advice, but it is another thing entirely to be able to put it into practice! Thanks to this program, with my team, we managed to get more results in 4 months than we had in the previous 5 years, with more than 20% growth.”

Doriane Dalati, Vice-President, General Manager. Redken Canada. “Redken Summit Salon Business College is THE most beneficial business X-Ray and Salon growth opportunity to hit Canada. I have attended numerous business programs in my 15 years in this industry and nothing comes even close to this. It is designed for serious business entrepreneurs who want serious growth.”

hat a proud night it was for Canada’s beauty industry when we crowned the Contessa 19 winners on November 4, just a few short weeks ago. What struck me most at the end of the 2008 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards was how widely spread the award winners were this year. They came from all across the country. Edwin Johnston from small-town Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, British Columbia took home the most coveted award of the evening—Canadian Hairstylist of the Year. Our Elite Master Hairstylist of the Year is John Graham from Vault Salon and Spa in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Makeover Colourist and three-time Contessa winner Rasa Jurenas comes from Tillsonburg, Ontario. Also a threetime winner, Multiticultural Hairstylist of the Year Rudy Pignataro is from Toronto. Session Hairstylist of the Year Mélanie Bélanger is from Ottawa. The Canadian Salon Team, Salon Pure, are from Montreal, and Avant Garde Hairstylist of the Year Christian Chartier comes from Trois-Rivières, Quebec. And then we have Timothy Day Howard, Men’s Hairstylist of the Year, all the way out in St. John’s, Newfoundland. I would be remiss if I did not mention that the 2008 Nail Enhancement Artist of the Year, Kali Howden, comes from Kelowna, British Columbia. Student Apprentice Hairstylist of the Year is Aimee Cox from Moods Salon in Vancouver. And the list goes on. It is just fantastic to see the spread of the awards. I hope this serves as a great encouragement to entrants old and new. Thanks to our wonderful judging panels for such a stellar job this year. And speaking of pride, our Team Contessa segments were a huge hit with their interpretations of the Seasons theme this year. I want to offer a very special thanks to the teams from Schwarzkopf Professional, Farouk Systems Group, L’Oréal Professionnel and Joico for presenting an amazing show in partnership with us. It was a huge success. Also, without the support and encouragement of all of our sponsors for Contessa 19, none of it would have been possible. I want to thank you once again and hope that you will be back to support us next year as we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Contessas—Canada’s most prestigious awards honouring excellence in creativity and salon professionals. Now, that’s a milestone to be a part of for sure. Finally, I want to thank all the members of the media who came out to cover the show this year. Your support of Contessa finalists and winners is very much appreciated. PHOTO BANASIAK

thought the night was finally over as I hopped in a cab, leaving the Contessa after-party at Rockwood nightclub. It seemed for days I hadn’t had a moment alone to think, and after a year of planning, it was now over. According to the accolades from ecstatic winners and happy revellers at the club, the night was a huge success. Ticket sales were up, Team Contessa presentations were a big hit, and we finished early! That was the initial checklist. The cab driver chatted me up about what was going on, and I gave him a brief rundown on the Contessas. Then he said, “Well, everyone seemed to have loved it.” My interest piqued, I asked how he knew. He'd done a few trips between the nightclub and the Convention Centre, and said all his passengers were in a great mood and excited, reporting that they'd had a great time. The clincher was when he said, “You know, I pick up passengers from all kinds of functions and events. Believe me, I get to hear a lot of stuff, because as soon as they sit in the back seat, the real truth about how they feel comes out. I can tell you, everyone loved the event.” Wow! They really did like it! It was a Sally Field moment for me. Who would have thought you can get such great feedback on the Contessas from a cabbie? The next day was another landmark event for us, our first annual thinktank forum—Contessa Unplugged. Robert Lobetta (pictured above), Anna Pacitto-Merlo and Ray Civello sat with an audience in the beautiful, historic Berkeley Church to discuss issues of the day (see story on page 100). It proved to be a spirited debate, with our audience quick to jump in with lots of questions. It demonstrated the desire for such conversations and the vast array of topics that can be covered. When the two-hour event wrapped up, I was delighted to see how many people milled around for more conversation. There was a real feeling of community or maybe a desire to build a community. For us at Salon Magazine, it allowed us to hear the voice of our industry and to peer into some of the thoughts, ideas and topics important to you, our readers. We were honoured and inspired that so many came out and filled the venue. Thank you for supporting excellence through events like the Contessas, and participating in Contessa Unplugged. I personally welcome your feedback and thoughts. Email me at laura@beautynet.com

How fitting that this collection came together with a group of 20 stylists on set, pitching in, giving their opinions and creating the hairstyles. anna Pacitto-merlo remembers back to the last time her salon won team of the year in 1998, when Pure was barely four months old. their commitment to teamwork was as evident then as it is now.

CONTESSA 19 GALA The excitement was almost palpable as the room filled up at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre with Canada’s top beauty professionals at the year’s most anticipated event—the Contessas. The night was all about celebrating as guests, sponsors and finalists toasted the industry’s finest. Early in the awards ceremony, having just won BC Hairstylist of the Year, Edwin Johnston gave a very poignant speech about how great a profession the beauty industry is, by paying tribute to a client who recently passed away. Little did he know he would be heading to the stage again later in the night to take home the most coveted Contessa—The 2008 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Award. That win would almost leave the longtime finalist speechless. What a beautiful night. Photos by Michael Banasiak and Joanne K. Crimson-coloured dresses by Fashion Crimes designer Pam Chorley set the mood for commanding hair design that ranged from short geometric shapes to tightly curled creations with defined and sculptural silhouettes. L’Oréal Professionnel’s colour palette was also inspired by the season and ranged from fiery copper to ruby, garnet and rust. Check out more photos at www.salon52.ca. Winter Presented by Joico

The show closed with Canada’s most notorious season: winter. Brought to life by Joico’s artistic team, Contessa 19’s closing segment showcased bewitching snow queens clad in nothing but white. Looks included a captivating warrior princess and sky-high, authoritative updos reminiscent of Marie Antoinette. Wardrobe stylist and lead makeup artist Cheryl Gushue sourced luminous silver-white gowns by Pam Chorley, designer of Fashion Crimes in Toronto, and created ghostly face and body makeup. Jessica Ellison, 2008 Nail Art Technician of the Year, rounded out the look with powerful, jewellery-like nails. View more at www.salon52.ca. obert Lobetta. Anna Pacitto-Merlo. Ray Civello. Three of North America’s top hairstylists gathered in a room the day after Contessa 19 with an assortment of winners, finalists and other industry professionals for Contessa Unplugged, an interactive conversation on the beauty industry at the Berkeley Church in downtown Toronto. The overall success of the industry is obviously something that benefits everyone from salon owners, stylists and estheticians to distributors and manufacturers. To that end, Salon took the opportunity to host a forum to share thoughts on the state of the industry now and in the future Moderator and Salon Magazine editor-in-chief Stephen Puddister outlined the three topics under discussion: the future of the industry, mentoring and recruitment. Civello launched into a brief but comprehensive look at all three topics, which he felt were linked. “What we are doing today is not enough. The youth of today want technology. They are on YouTube and Facebook. They relate to cameras and computers, which could be put to good use, especially in training. Civello feels that to succeed, the industry has to open its eyes to technology and its potential educational benefits. He sees this particularly relevant to recruitment, a challenge that many salon owners face. Not all were in total agreement. While Pacitto-Merlo acknowledged that technology will be important, she added, “We are artisans and will never be taken over by computers. When the subject of mentoring came up—and the lack of singular stars like Vidal Sassoon and others—Pacitto-Merlo elaborated on the present state of the industry. “I think session work and media

w w w. s a lo n 5 2 . c a

opportunities have opened up opportunities to many more people these days. There are many top stylists whose work is being seen.” Lobetta advised stylists to be more visionary when they look towards the future. “The industry is not just about hair. You want your salon to be a place of destination, where people go to be cocooned. We can evolve further and further—the opportunity is yours to take.” When discussion was opened to the floor, recruitment was definitely a prime area of concern. As Lobetta eloquently put it, “How do we sell our industry to young people, how do we make it electric?” Suggestions included the concept of an industry regulating body—not a government body—that would be run by salon owners, school educators, distributors and manufacturers. This group could establish a recruitment vehicle and help press for consistent standards, which now can vary from province to province, school to school. As one audience member remarked, “We can achieve a lot more if we stand united as one.” Strong media campaigns were put forward as a recruitment tool. “You have to reach out to young people where they can hear you,” said Civello. Citing one example, his company ran a very sexy TV ad during the Christmas holidays, when they knew students would be watching. The topic of recruitment led naturally into questions about education from some of the students in the audience. Why don’t they have more hands-on time? Why arent’t they taught to build a relationship with a client? One of the educators in the audience admitted that it’s hard to give enough time to each student, but also that students learn at very individual rates. PacittoMerlo pointed out that in Italy the average time stylists spend in school before apprenticing is three years, while in Quebec it is six to eight months. One thing all three panelists agreed on was that it was the salon’s responsibility to continue training and mentoring its apprentices and junior stylists. “Do you just set Monday aside for education?” asked Civello. “It should be ongoing.” Added Lobetta, “Salon owners have to take ownership. You have to take the chance that some staff will leave.” Looking to the future, Pacitto-Merlo and Lobetta see the salon as a total beauty centre, a purveyor of style. “Once clients cross the threshold, they are in my domain,” said Lobetta. “Ambience is so important, everything from the art on the walls to the fashions the staff wear. It has to be a place that creates ideas, that is exciting for people to come to.” A true source of fashion reference is how Pacitto-Merlo describes it. “We’re real, we can advise them. Clients look to us for ideas and suggestions.” As the forum wrapped up, there was one thing everyone agreed on. “We’re too fragmented. We need to come together as an industry,” said Civello. To this end, some salons have been coming together to share ideas. Pacitto-Merlo mentioned that it’s happening more regularly in Quebec, where her salon is meeting with 10 or 12 other salons. These are the first steps towards an open dialogue and, hopefully, a more cohesive and dynamic industry. To share your thoughts, go to www.salon52.ca. S
