his year’s Contessa Awards, my first, exceeded my expectations in every way. From the amazing work that flowed in from entrants all over Canada to the electric entertainment segments from Michelle Pargee, Colin Ford and Rossa Jurenas to walking into the fully dressed empty ballroom for the first time and realizing just how big this event really is, I was blown away. The energy in that room when attendees started streaming in is not something I will soon forget. It was months of meetings held and little decisions being made that all added up to one big, memorable night. One of my favourite parts of the night was listening to the winners speak onstage. Their sincerity and the excitement was thrilling, especially from those who were first-time winners. I can only imagine how it must feel to put your heart, soul and creativity into your work and then have that honoured and recognized by your peers as the best. It makes me want to enter! As amazing as my first Contessas were, I think I speak for many on the staff when I say that in the week following the show, the focus was on breaking down the event and the awards and talking about what we can do to make next year’s even better. We love getting feedback and advice on the show, and we’re grateful for people who care enough about the show and the awards to talk to us about what they would like to see. The Contessa Awards are always changing. Categories get added or dropped. Rules are modified or amended. The industry has evolved over the last 23 years, and we have had to update the awards to reflect that. We welcome your input on any part of the entry process, the awards or the event. We’re already having conversations about next year’s entry form, and if you have something to say, talk to us. You can email me at melissa@salonmagazine.ca or please message us on Facebook at Facebook.com/Salon52. Can’t wait to see you all again next year!

Telling the Story

esides looking through all of the entries, my favourite part of the Contessas is the entertainment segments on the night of the gala. They play a huge role in the evening, designed to tell the story of the theme in three parts and provide hairstyling “eye candy.” I’m always amazed when I finally get to watch the segments and see the whole show come together in all its glory! My favourite comment each year is when someone inevitably asks “Where do they come up with that?!” Michelle Pargee was one of the stylists responsible for putting together a segment for this year’s Contessas. When I met with Michelle at the Vancouver ABA in April, she shared tons of her ideas for the Tokyo segment—before the sponsorship had even been approved by Goldwell. I walked away shaking my head. Her concept was grand, and I could barely wrap my head around it. After many meetings, I was still somewhat baffled. Would it work, this crazy presentation she developed with her Goldwell comrades? But after seeing it all come together the night of the gala, the answer was clearly, “Yes!” She and her team pulled off a great segment that complemented and balanced perfectly Rossa Jurenas’ dark, moody, punk rock take on New York City and Colin Ford’s sexy, sophisticated look for Paris. Combined, the three pieces of the puzzle came together to perfectly tell the story of “Cities After Dark.” One of the things all three artists had in common was their clarity of vision. Each knew how to translate the theme, putting their own unique stamp on their segment, and deliver a great show. Having put on the Contessa gala for many years now, I can tell you from experience that shows are never easy to produce. There are so many variables, and serving up great entertainment that excites and inspires an audience is difficult. Colin, Rossa and Michelle pulled it off this year, with grace and style. Check out pages 32–37 for a look at each of their segments, and to see all the action, visit SalonMagazine.ca and check out videos from the night!

elebrating the night before Halloween, this year’s Contessa Awards had a decidely darker edge. More than 1,000 hairstylists from across the country were in attendance to crown the best in Canadian hair, makeup and nails. The Cities After Dark theme came to life with three presentations that stoked imaginations while showcasing the nightlife and style of some of the most vibrant cities around the world: New York, Paris and Tokyo.

NYC after dark NewYork City PRESENTED BY SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL

Rossa Jurenas and her team were tasked with creating the cool, moody New York segment that kicked off the first of the three presentations. Inspired by “’80s meets Sex and the City,” Jurenas took the rocker platinum blonde and transformed it to chic and glam. “Bright colours were huge in the ‘80s, so our models rocked creamy, champagne blondes with splashes of colour,” she says. Jurenas strove to recreate the feeling of real people walking the dark streets of a place with an eclectic nightlife, where anything goes. PARIS after dark PRESENTED BY L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL

“L’Oréal Professionnel is the Parisian house of hairdressing and a French brand,” says Colin Ford, the man behind this segment. “Paris at night epitomizes sophistication, glamour and sensuality in all aspects of fashion, which, of course, is always completed with hair.” To depict Parisian nightlife, Ford’s inspiration came from starlet Brigitte Bardot, one of the best-known sex symbols from the ‘60s. “She symbolizes beauty, sensuality and beautiful, sexy hair,” he says. When envisioning Tokyo, Michelle Pargee sees a vibrant palette of bright, rich colours. As the creative director for the Tokyo segment, Pargee drew inspiration from the traditional geisha and transformed it into the extreme opposite. “I wanted to go beyond everything you see in hair shows. We’ve developed a story that’s very interactive,” she says. “It’s haunting in some spots, possibly disturbing, but fun. It’s very high-tech.” Creative Director: Michelle Pargee Hair Team: Michelle Pargee, Dale Seeman (co-creative director), Timothy Switzer, Rodica Hristu and Sylvain Bellerose Makeup: Jesus Abreu Styling: Mike Reilly and Yung Jegal Stage Manager: Kara Gilbertson Choreographer: Vanessa Young Nails: Jolie Beauty Bar

hen I saw Anna Pacitto and Daniel Benoît win these awards more than a decade ago, it became my dream to win Canadian Hairstylist of the Year. The collection is called Reflection, and Simon Normand, the photographer, and I worked very hard to make it happen. The idea of the mirror was critical to show the different angles of the hair. Symmetry is very important in this collection. Everything on the models had to be perfect, right down to their hands. I wanted a natural look, so I didn’t use any extensions or wigs—just two GEEwigs.”

nspired by colour blocking and the shades of green he saw on fashion runways, Switzer created this twicehonoured collection. “I think my favourite was the pure tone with yellow, green and violet pink. It was inspired by the ‘90s and Demi Moore’s bowl cut in Ghost. The heavy fringe and geometric style was the common ground between all five of the looks,” says Switzer. Other remarkable styles from the collection include a highcontrast blonde, using green and navy blue, and a redhead with complementary lime-green tones.

Mandy MacFadden

Texture & Ontario Hairstylist of the Year

M

andy MacFadden had recently returned from a trip to Europe when she created her collection. The architecture in particular inspired her, with its “old, soft shapes and curves, all right next to a modern, sleek-structured building. I love the old merged with new.” MacFadden decided to forgo the use of hairpieces and tried out props, inspired by European fashion spreads, instead. “I love to use props. Sometimes they can be a little overdone, but I think we did well in keeping it very fashionable and hair-focused. I wanted it to look like it came from a fashion magazine, but based on hair. That’s very hard to do with headshots.”

M

y inspiration for this collection comes from a futuristic fantasy exploiting different themes: the earth, the environment and the survival of the species, brought to life by a series of otherworldly queens. I wanted something completely natural, so I didn’t use any hairpieces. Even the redhead—who has a stunning mane that falls below her hips—I used eight tubes of Inoa just on her! I also wanted to give the hair that feeling of weightlessness, to capture the feeling of being in outer space, without any gravity.”

his session is from Dress to Kill magazine’s special issue on Jean Paul Gaultier from summer 2011. I wanted to play up all that rebel, punk spirit of the '80s, when Gaultier sprang on the fashion scene in Paris. The red hair is extremely saturated and vibrant, with an intriguing mix of cascading curls and tiny tresses. The short-hair bob is actually a wig that I deconstructed right there on the model the day of the photoshoot. This is the third year in a row I won a Contessa. Thank you Salon Magazine !”

Men’s Hairstylist of the Year

I

wanted to show range as a men’s hairstylist,” says VanHorne of his collection. He did just that by selecting varied models, of different ages and looks. The styles he created were equally demonstrative of his talent with men’s hair, from short to classic midlength to edgy. “I always aim for versatility when I do a cut. I create something that has two sides, one of work and one for going out,” he says. “It’s a great way to change a man’s look. In creating this collection, I just did what I do on a daily basis with my male clients. I didn’t want it contrived or made up.”

his is the fourth time I’ve entered the Contessas. And just being a finalist was a huge thrill for me! Everything happened really quickly this time. It took me just under a week to find the models: Rachel Desmarais from Specs, Vanessa Pilon, a young actor, and Raphaelle Savoie from Folio. I practically had no plan but created the looks on the spot, being inspired by the models’ features, focusing on cheeks, lips and eyes for each one of the looks. I’m really lucky to have been able to work with such amazing models.”

Jorge Joao

Multicultural Hairstylist of the Year

M

y focus on this collection was a collision of textures, a controlled chaos,” says Joao. “It was really just dealing with different types of hair, fabrics and materials, and on the models, porcelain faces and smooth skin tones versus the texture of the hair. I had this vision and played with the concept for a year and half before I did it.” Each hair piece was constructed in about an hour and half, and it took two hours on the day of the shoot to incorporate the pieces into the models’ own hair.

T

he secondtime nominee and first-time winner was “completely floored” when she heard her name announced. “I think I almost flipped the table,” she says. Of her collection, she aimed to make something to show her pride in being Canadian and came up with the idea of making her models look like dream catchers, while also incorporating feathers into the design. “I also like to use recycled goods, so one piece was made out of the top of a lampshade, another was from a candle holder and the last from a garden basket.”

C

had Taylor is no stranger to the Contessas. Both a finalist and a winner in past years, he put a lot of time into looking for the models to carry off the strong looks in this collection. “Most of the inspiration was from post-punk album art and film-noir clips. These looks take references from many different eras and classic techniques. I focused on texture, using different setting techniques to create the looks and shapes. The black-and-white imagery creates a certain mood and puts the emphasis more on shape and texture.

udy MacDonald has been a finalist many times before, but never a winner. That’s all changed with her latest collection, which features bright orange and purple highlights and a new take on the pompadour. “The overall look I wanted was Hollywood glamour infused with strong punk undertones. The hair cuts mixed sharp lines, soft shapes and geometric texture. The colour was so much fun to do.” She cites fashion as one of her biggest inspirations and research sources. “Alexander McQueen has always been one of my go-tos. The shapes and textures they create with material, I like to create with hair.” 70

urprisingly, the winning collection Bélanger entered for this year’s Contessas marked her first time competing. A salon founder, owner and creative director, she has also travelled the world for her work as international artistic director for Pureology, but never entered a competition due to “sheer fear,” she says. “For me, this was a win in all kinds of ways.” The idea for the images came from a conversation with a friend and co-worker. “I was inspired by horses’ manes, and native headdresses and headpieces. It took a tribal turn from there.”

I

just kind of draw out my ideas on paper first and then I play with them and let my imagination go wild,” says Reyn VonDyck of the creative process behind his collections. “I let it go in the direction it wants to go. Then on shooting day you put it all together and it’s like, ‘Wow it actually works.’” The secret behind VonDyck’s colourful, retro-inspired styles is that none of the highlights are actual colours. “They’re actually brushed-on makeup powder.” While his three looks may not be from the same era, VonDyck didn’t want to compromise his vision. “Don’t think that you want to win–just be true to your inspiration.”

had just been to the Vidal Sassoon Academy and done a creative cutting course,” says up-and-comer Devon Plamondon of the sleek, modern cuts in his winning collection. The colorful purple and pink highlights in his precise, balanced bobs were “just something different that I didn’t get to do in the salon everyday,” he says. “I wanted it to be clean looking. The skin tones came out porcelain in the photos, and that really made the colours stand out.” While he does study other collections for inspiration, he says that “it just comes. It will even come from a dream.”

I wanted a very light, airy, ethereal feel. As far as the hair goes, I had an idea of what I wanted to do, but it changed by the shoot date,” says stylist Chrissy Allan of creating her first Contessa collection. She’s definitely not shy about looking up to superstar stylists for motivation. “Angelo Seminara is one of my hair heroes, so I was researching his past collections a lot. Vivienne Mackinder was probably my biggest inspiration for this collection. Her Lady of the Manor had a really pretty, girly kind of look to it, and I just loved it.”

I

wanted to work on a theme with three metallic colours (gold, silver and bronze), and I was also looking for something slightly futuristic. And, obviously, there had to be a link with the hands. The chains worked really well to bring all this together. I’ve only been working as a nail technician for two years, so I’m really excited about winning a Contessa! My best friend, who’s a hairstylist, told me about this competition, and we both entered. I’m really happy my work got recognized.”

I

wanted to provide a clean, minimal-type space. Modern, but not cold,” says Marco Verrelli of his concept for Salon M Squared, an award-winning space that also took home a NAHA for Salon Design. His favourite feature is the stone merchandise wall. “I like the whole stone feel; it’s very welcoming and earthy. It fits in really well with the rest of the decor.” To get inspired, Verrelli says he went through a lot of magazines to find spaces that interested him, while still maintaining his unique design sense. “I’ve always been drawn to clean spaces. I’m not a clutter kind of guy.”

wner Bruce Peters attributes the salon’s success in part to being “community focused and globally minded.” He says the approach attracts like-minded team members. “It’s a component that helps us be successful. And I’d be absolutely nowhere without the people I work with, without this team.” This year was the first time he had entered the category; although the salon has entered other categories in the past. “We don’t have multiple locations, and we’re not massive by any means, so I was surprised and honoured,” he says.

Introduce clients to the new Croco Fever Effect shades. When one of the four colours is layered over the silver or gold base, it cracks into a cool crocodile skin pattern as it dries.

This new Gel Polish is a self-levelling UV gel with excellent adhesion and low odour. It applies like a traditional nail polish but lasts for weeks.

or clients with an on-the-go lifestyle, recommend the new OSiS Style Shifters. Launching in February, the three liquid texturizing sprays in light, medium and strong control allow you to create boundless, vibrant styles. From straight, to up-dos to structured hair with lots of volume, these colourful products also give creative flexibility on the fly.

Money Matters

When salon traffic slows in the long winter months, make sure you’re prepped to make the most of each service with the perfect take-homes and add-ons for your clients.

1. Extend the life of a blow-out. Make sure your clients have a dry shampoo for second-day (and third or fourth-day) hair. Offer them something that soaks up the oil, while adding volume and texture. Try: Eufora’s new Touch Up Tinted Texturizing Dry Shampoo. It comes in Clear, as well as Light and Dark, for brunettes.

2. Add on a pre-service treatment. Get hair in tip-top shape before your client sits down in that colour chair. Try: Malibu C offers products designed specifically for hair wellness, like the Color Wellness Kit, which offers Miracle Repair and Color Prepare. 3. Make processing time treatment time Offer clients a polish change or a hand treatment while colour or chemical services process. It’ll make time at the salon more memorable and relaxing. Try: Cuccio Naturale’s Youth Anti-Aging Hand Care Kit. It has everything you need to create four money-making add-on services. 4. Slow colour fade after a service. This one is a no-brainer, yet so many clients still walk out of the salon after a colour service without a shampoo and conditioner to retain their shade. Make sure yours don’t. Try: UNITE’s new BLONDA Conditioner. The perfect complement to BLONDA Shampoo, it neutralizes brassy tones and locks in moisture.
