Melissa Hill Editor

W

hen the suggestion of the theme “Revolution” was first brought up back in March 2012, it resonated with Salon staff. It felt like a theme that acknowledged not only the constant changes in the industry, but also what was going on outside the salon world. And then in May, when we heard that Vidal Sassoon had passed away, the theme seemed even more appropriate for a show where we would take time to honour and remember the greatest of hair revolutionaries. In June, I first heard Charles Marcus speak at Goldwell’s Hairvolution East in Niagara Falls, Ont. Marcus, pictured with me above, is a former hairstylist from the U.K. and is now a motivational speaker and author. As a young man, he moved to Canada and was hired by Sassoon Salon in Toronto. He told a remarkable story of meeting Vidal Sassoon that really highlighted the type of person Sassoon was. When we wanted someone to introduce a video remembering Sassoon, Marcus was a natural choice, and he did an amazing job. This was just one of the highlights of the 24th annual Contessa Awards. It’s hard to capture the full feeling of the night without being there, but we attempted to do just that with the coverage in this issue—from backstage shots and cocktail party photos to the winning collections and quotes from the lucky winners. We have even more online at SalonMagazine.ca, including videos of the awesome Team Contessa presentations and hundreds of photos snapped throughout the night. For the the first time, the entire night was also captured live by webcast—sponsored by Joico and ISO—and you can view that video on our site, as well. And come check it out in person for yourself. Whether you’re a Contessa newbie or a repeat visitor, we look forward to seeing you next year for our silver anniversary!

here are so many highlights of Contessa night—my head spins just thinking about it! The glory of seeing the winners crowned continues to thrill me, as I’m just as surprised as everyone else in the audience. Listening to the heart-warming speeches and seeing faces both old and new are what the night is all about. But there’s more going on that night than winners being announced. TheTeam Contessa presentations are always exciting and inspiring, as we finally get to see the fruits of the six-month, labour-intensive process that takes these amazing looks from storyboard to stage. The collaboration with Schwarzkopf Professional, Sebastian and Redken—this year’s Team Contessa—produced three unique, seamless five-minute segments that were little jewels of entertainment. In those short minutes, the presentations told stories, showed great hair and interpreted the night’s “Revolution” theme perfectly. What really resonates with me, though, is seeing some of our best talent and industry veterans from across Canada still getting excited about doing a show like this. Another of my favourite moments is watching the ABA New Talent winners take a bow on stage. These young student stylists have never been to such a big industry event and were pretty awed to be in the same room as some of their heroes. Building upon their already burgeoning talent, they got a great taste of just how fantastic this business can be. But events like the Contessas aren’t simply about patting ourselves on our backs. It’s about striving for excellence and continuing to be inspired and passionate about the industry. It’s about camaraderie, new friendships and stepping outside of the box of day-to-day life in the salon. The Contessa Awards just have a magical way of bringing the beauty community together to shine and dazzle, and that’s something to celebrate!

This year’s Contessa Awards gala, with the theme of Revolution, brought together stylists, colourists, makeup artists and nail pros from across Canada for one night to celebrate the very best in professional beauty. The theme was brought to life with beautiful, creative presentations from Schwarzkopf Professional, Sebastian and Redken.

revolution: future presented by Redken

T

he futuristic third segment was an amazing story told in three parts, through music, hair, costumes and multimedia. According to the creative team, “It was an evolution from a dark time to a light time. It’s the transformation from the dark age to an age of wealth and then into the light.” The hair was atypical—featuring geometric shapes and designs, with an unexpected softness. The variety of hair was amazing, with each of the three parts offering distinct styles. Alina Friesen

T

wo years ago, Alina Friesen entered the Contessas for the first time and won Newcomer of the Year. This year, she’s taken home one of the top awards with a colourful collection that she spent six months working on—from initial idea to photo shoot. This was just one of the five collections she entered for 2013. She says her biggest challenge is finding the right models to suit the styles she wants to achieve. “I was shocked, surprised and extremely happy,” says Friesen of hearing her name called. “I feel pretty honoured. I didn’t think it would come so fast!”

Blushes

Canadian Salon Team of the Year

S

hot in Hong Kong, this beautiful collection from the team at Blushes was created with “the idea of combining seemingly conventional materials and concepts to create innovation,” according to owner and stylist, Silas Tsang. Of winning the award, he says, “It means more than I can describe in words for my team and I. We felt that all of our hard work building up to this moment was rewarded. Particularly with this collection, we had great conflicts preparing and organizing a trip to Hong Kong, and we also had to adapt to factors outside of our control, including the unsparingly hot and humid weather.”

Edwin Johnston

Elite Master Hairstylist of the Year

H

aving always been inspired by London, Edwin Johnston’s winning collection pays homage to the city. “London is one of the few cities in the world where fashion and individuality come alive on the streets,” he says, “from designers and photographers to seeing youth on the street interpret the ‘now’ look.” His goal was creating “clean hair, with some precision cutting, multiple textures, volume and control of technique.” On winning the award, he says, “It just means on this day, I was lucky to have the stars line up. Honestly, I feel completely blessed to have been given this award. Hopefully, I can live up to it!”

his award marked Michelle Pargee’s third win for Master Colourist. All of her collections for the Contessas this year had the same theme—Life in Colour— because, “it doesn’t matter the category, it’s all colour to me,” she says. Her signature look has shades that melt and blend into each other, which is also what she finds most challenging on a technical level. The hardest part of putting together a collection, though, is keeping her own counsel. “What’s tricky is ignoring what is current and forgetting what everyone else is doing—trying to stick to the vision in my head,” says Pargee.

I’m going to continue pushing myself and my team through photo shoots and competing. I opened my salon in April. These awards could not have come at a better time!”

nspired by London in the ’50s, last year’s Makeover and Master Colourist winner stepped out of his comfort zone for this vibrant collection. “For me, this one was important. It showed growth, and that I could both colour and style hair,” says Timothy Switzer of his collection. “It was a big step forward for me and outside what I traditionally do.” Combining the colourful, masculine suits with feminine finger waves and updos provided the images with the perfect amount of tension, while the decision to go full-length added impact and movement to the work.

On winning for the second year in a row, he says, “I’ve been a finalist many times and lost. When I won last year, I stayed up all night wondering, ‘What’s next?’ I never imagined I’d have two, but a pair is nice. One day, when I can no longer do this, I can say I did hair and I was good at it.”

This prize has been great for troop morale in the salon,” says Sandro Macri. “It has motivated everyone. This collection started with an idea—avant garde is especially feeling outside the box. Trilby Reeves, an inspiring artist, did all the sketches for the collection. I wanted to do something that represented the idea of ‘the sky is the limit,’ with women floating in the sky.”

Makeup Artist of the Year

T

his Contessa is a great honour for me! It crowns a year of intense work. For this collection, I was inspired by the airbrushed art of the ’80s. That was the starting point,” says Craig-Ryan French. “I also looked to Duran Duran, Robert Palmer and bands from that decade, but made the look fresh and modern. Those iconic images that I’ve worked with are coming back. I grew up in the ’70s and ’80s, and all the images from that era—TV, film, music— kind of worked their way into my subconscious. I wanted to revisit that with a mature approach.”

his is the second Contessa for Stacey in the Multicultural category. Her first was in 2010. “I went crazy and ran to the stage in heels. I actually cut my ankle on the spikes because I was so excited! I am very honoured and proud to have two Contessas in the same category. It’s challenging because you show different texture and colour, and you don’t always work with this type of hair. For me this is an important category because I am known as a blonde expert and I like to show the industry that I’m not just a one-trick pony,” she says.

Alberta Hairstylist of the Year

A

true veteran, John Jen Hoe Chong has been entering the Contessas since the early ’90s. This is Contessa number three for him. “I’ve been a finalist many times, but I was not prepared at all to go on stage. I was completely shocked and was stuttering. My inspiration comes from everyday life. I look to the kids working in my salon, so I can think outside the box. I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” he says. “A Contessa is great to generate buzz around your salon. People want to work with the top talent in Canada. It also brings them in because they want to try something new.”

tephanie Corbett’s inspiration comes from a picture of a woman with big hair, who is seated and dressed in lingerie. “That was it. I wanted the older-style panties, and originally we also wanted to use gloves, as well,” explains Corbett. She also consulted closely with her photographers on the bright-white tone, and they created two hairstyles on each of the models before assessing which photos to enter. As a first-time entrant into the Contessas, it was more than beginner’s luck. “I had a lot of help with Giancarlo and Richard because they knew what they were doing. They were my go-to, and we bounced off all our ideas off them.”

he inspiration for first-time winner Timothy Kuo’s images came from classic cuts and styles—many from past Sassoon collections. For the cuts, Kuo used shaving and undercutting to add a modern twist, while bright colour placements highlight the strong geometric lines. “I definitely wanted to show off colour and I did everything with colour in mind,” he says. This year’s win marked Kuo’s fifth year of entering the Contessas, and he competed in this category against his girlfriend, Loretta Tom, who entered for the first time. On winning, Kuo says, “To be recognized by my peers—for people to say that it’s good—that means a lot.”

worked with my team on this collection, so it’s a group effort. Each person had a specific role,” says Sandy Hogue. “I think the result was even stronger because we challenged each other and pushed ourselves harder to get that ‘wow’ factor. We really focused on colour and kept the makeup to a minimum. We had a good feeling, but it’s always a great surprise when you hear your name being called out onstage! reat inspiration can come from the most unlikely of sources, including under the sea for Josie Vilayvanh’s captivating collection. “I was inspired from the shape of a jellyfish, and from there the other two hair shapes were formed,” says Vilayvanh. “The jellyfish is influenced by the classic Vidal Sassoon cut, but I like the tentacle and wisps, so I threw that in. On the unconventional colour, she says, “There’s a dark, light and medium tone. I like the metallic grey because it’s hard to achieve. Copper is difficult to photograph, and I put a bit of colour in the last image.”

hen my colourist, Melanie Bourne, and I met the models, we wanted to do something fun and artsy in a wearable way,” says Dina Morrell of the hair. “A big factor for my work is working with natural hair—before adding on, to know what you already have to work with.” Her inspiration for the collection comes from a learning experience from a past Contessa entry. “There was not enough versatility, and I wanted to show off what I’ve learned in the past five years in three pictures. They are everyday styles I really love, but altered to make it fun and creative.”

We wanted to expand the retail area and have clients be able to see out into the salon from the waiting area and be available to them since they can see us.” The space also boasts a second floor for spa services, private rooms for couples and childcare in the back.

e are honoured and privileged to win such an award. The award is certainly something that we are proud of because it shows our valued guests and staff alike that we are always striving to be better and are recognized for it,” says president Milajne Soligo. “It’s a win for our company and all our valued employees.” Soligo advises other owners who want to ramp up their businesses to “build your culture. Culture is the key to your organization and having everyone on the same bus, striving toward a goal. It doesn’t get better than that.”

aria Racco attended the Contessas four years ago and heard Sherry Abbott, from Look Good, Feel Better, speak. She immediately turned to one of her stylists and said, “We have to do something.” Out of that moment, Style For [A] Cause was born. This year, Racco was back with her team at the awards, this time being honoured for the work they do. In three years, their event has raised more than $12,500 for local charities, including Look Good Feel Better and last year’s recipient, Doane House Hospice. “Hopefully, we influence other salons to give back to their communities, too,” says Racco.

The Brilliant One

Peer into the future of hair colour with Matrix ColorInsider

t

he age-old puzzle remains: What do women want? The stats reveal: 69 per cent of women are concerned about ammonia content in permanent hair colour, and 43 per cent will abandon colour altogether to avoid contact with harsh chemicals. With clients savvy and inquisitive about the products they consume, Matrix kept them top of mind when they created ColorInsider, a new permanent colour system with 53 shades, available in February. Compared to other water-based colour systems, ColorInsider uses an oil-based technology with low alkalinity to efficiently inject colour with minimum stress to the hair. The result is stunning, with high-resolution colour and a wellbalanced palette, with strong reds.

Winter-Proof

The major culprits of hair problems are easy to spot: dry indoor heat, snapcold temperatures and low humidity. But with a solid regimen of hair care, clients can keep the hat off without any abominable fear. The Eufora Beautifying Elixirs line is infused with natural ingredients, including shea butter, seed oils and a tri-sugar complex, which deeply moisturize and strengthen hair. The nine-piece line includes Bodifying and Intense Moisture shampoos and conditioners, Frizz Control Finishing Spray and the Damage Cure Clay Masque for weekly applications.

Malibu C offers hair relief at the root of the issue: the scalp. Specifically formulated to soothe and prevent flaking, irritation and inflammation, the Scalp Wellness Kit is a trio of a daily shampoo and conditioner and a weekly treatment. The Scalp Therapy Wellness Treatment helps promote circulation and is infused with B vitamins, niacin and biotin for therapeutic results.

Canadian Wins Top Award at Trend Vision 2012 WHAT: Congratulations to Philip Ferreira from Axis Salon in Vancouver, who took home gold at Wella Professional's annual International Trend Vision Awards (ITVA) in Spain. The gathering brought together thousands of stylists from around the world for a long weekend of inspiring hair and included competition among Wella's best artists, as well as trend presentations from the top creative teams. WHO: Wella Professional global creative directors Eugene Souleiman and Josh Wood created the new trends for 2013. The collection encompasses four “characters” rooted in the world of music, where colour and sound are inextricably linked. With the idea that sounds and songs can evoke a feeling, smell, texture, colour, time or place, the trend was inspired by the interplay between the senses. HIGHLIGHTS: For spring/summer 2013, the trends are Fusion—East meets West, an eclectic culture clash—and Decibel—a creative freefall, pushing the boundaries between colour and shape into deliberate dissonance. For fall/winter 2013, the trends turn solo to the inner world of imagination. Echo is precise and minimalist, while Allegra belongs to the bright world of the decadent elite. The weekend also offered an opportunity to preview upcoming launches, including an in-depth look at the new Illumina colour line, a brand-new, permanent formula, coming to Canada in early 2013.
