our first time only happens once, so there’s no doubt you’re hoping for a special experience. Being a first-time Contessa attendee, I was looking forward to a glamorous,

star-studded evening; after all, this is an event that pays homage to the Canadian beauty industry’s elite. From the spectacular onstage performances to the incredible finalists’ gallery to the winners’ heartfelt speeches, Contessa 25 was packed with inspiring stories that are at the centre of this creative industry.

Along with the high-energy atmosphere indicative of a gala event, this year’s Contessa Awards told the story of spectacular hair, punctuated by brilliant colours and gravity-defying styles that were simultaneously striking and inspiring. As a complement to the standout showcase of coifs, guests came out in their most of-the-moment, and perhaps even a little unexpected, fashion-forward looks. In fact, the amazing array of styles was so stunning that we’ve featured some of the evening’s hottest looks in the story “Curators of Style” on page 78. But beyond all the trend-setting styles, the evening was an opportunity for industry professionals from coast to coast to celebrate

each other’s work. As I’ve learned after speaking with some of this year’s winners, each collection has a story and you’ll find each of the winning collections, beginning on page 28 of this issue. But celebrating Contessa

25 doesn’t, however, stop there. In each issue this year the “Contessa Gallery” will feature this year’s finalists, where you’ll have an opportunity to learn a little about how other stylists from across the country put together their collections. Whether you want to experience this memorable night again or for the first time, check out SalonMagazine.ca, where you’ll not only find backstage photos and winner interviews, but you can also view the complete webcast of the awards sponsored by CND VINYLUX. Without a doubt, it was an unforgettable evening; one that we encourage you to experience for yourself, so come join us next year!

Circus By Anna Lee Boschetto Gala photos by Maja Hajduk and Bryan Lockyer Fuelled by energy and excitement, the Circus theme at this year’s Contessa Awards Gala underscored the dynamic nature of the professional salon and beauty industry. Coming together for one night under the big top, the evening applauded an incredibly talented collective of hairstylists, colourists, makeup and nail artists from across Canada. Along with celebrating milestones, including Contessa’s 25th anniversary and Salon Magazine’s 20th, creative teams from Schwarzkopf Professional and Matrix incorporated their distinct inspiration into each presentation, bringing the magic of the circus to life.

n the pre-dawn hours at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto, the production crew has already begun to assemble the staging, lights, audio equipment and visual screens—the technical backdrop that will make the Contessa Awards Gala come to life. By the time

Salon Magazine staff and volunteers arrived to assemble the swag bags, the prep rooms where the hairstylists who were presenting their work that evening, were becoming a hub of activity. By mid-afternoon, the teams from Schwarzkopf Professional and Matrix were making their final adjustments and adding finishing touches while setting up to run through one last rehearsal before taking to the stage.

Nailing the Details As the exclusive nail sponsor for Contessa 25, CND created showstopping nails based on the Circus Mime theme.

The Schwarzkopf Professional team led by Rossa Jurenas works together, adding the final touches to hair and makeup for the Circus Mime segment.

J

ennifer Mather from CND shares her inspiration behind the custom designs created for the show. In order to

gain a better understanding of the story being told in the performance, Mather went over the images provided by the stylist. “At that point I sketched the nails I saw fitting the theme and gathered the materials that would bring these nails to life,” she says. When it came to choosing shades, Mather says she started with about 10, including shades of gold, rich burgundies and black. Adding textures such as lace, glitter, velvet, patent and foil completed the look. “The nails took on their own story, reflecting soft femininity to bold, textured decadence.”

ith old-world French music playing in the background, a charming mime makes his entrance. Extending the theme, each model features a distinctly modern yet boldly playful

ACHIEVE GLOBAL RECOGNITION

Revive hands with these cool tones.

CND Part of the new hues in the Open Road collection, Powder My Nose is a soft shade reminding us that spring is around the corner.

The annual international hairstyling competition, Revlon Professional Style Masters, is now open for entries. Stylists create an imaginative and beautiful hair collection by using one model and one cut and then create three different looks using products from the Stlye Masters line. Country winners will be selected, from which a jury will choose nine finalists in March. The finalists move on to the live global competition in a European capital, where they’ll compete for the Style Masters Gold Trophy, a 10,000 euros (approximately CAD $14,000) cash prize and international media publicity. Awards include, Global Winner, Best Technique and Creativity, along with Young Talent, which invites newcomers to compete in their own category for a trip to the international event and 3,000 euros (approximately CAD $4,200) in cash. Entry deadline is February 15, 2014. For more information and to submit your images, go to Stylemasters.com/contest.

Long Live Colour Introducing Essie Gel, the new generation of nail colour.

Insta-Curl EZ stylEr by Hot tools “The EZ Styler works much faster than a typical curling iron, creating a full head of curls in less than 10 minutes. I also like that it tames curls without straightening them,” says Detra Smith, Hot Tools educator.

The oneinch barrel lets stylists clamp and twirl hair for a variety of curl sizes and shapes.

With no sign of backing down, the gel nail manicure has become a proven revenue driver. Available in 36 shades from Essie Weingarten, Essie Gel is a progressive LED gel system that enables you to achieve maximum colour quality, durability and nail health. HEALTHY FINGERTIPS: From cleanser to base coat to the ultraconditioning remover, maintain your clients’ natural nail health using the keratin-care technology found in each step of the Essie Gel nail service. The soak-off remover easily dissolves the product so that clients are ready to go in a mere 15 minutes. TOUGH AS NAILS: With a durable base coat that goes on thin, as well as a top coat that seals in colour, clients can expect an impressive 14 days of wear. Plus, the LED lamp’s interior mirror 2 finish ensures even light distribution, curing at 41 mW per cm .

The tool heats up at a high speed, and LED lights indicate when low, medium and high heat settings are reached.

Take Hold of Styles Add a finishing touch to any style with two different product options from Sebastian. Shine Shaker is a lightweight finishing spray that adds a luminous effect to hair, while Texture Maker, a mineral texturing hairspray, offers a medium hold with a matte finish. Anthony Cole, Sebastian’s international artist, shares three ways to take hold of the styling possibilities, even when winter weather looms overhead.

1.

Since winter air is dry, hair tends to cling to the head. Texture Maker adds life to hair by not only

Canadian StyliStS Man Up All-Star Challenge Finalists Face Off with Men’s Hair

adding volume to the root but also by adding lift to the ends.

2.

Create a day-to-night look by spraying Texture Maker from the roots to the ends. Turn head over and blow-dry vigorously to wake up the hair’s texture and volume.

3.

To create modern, effortless waves that last all day, first apply Texture Maker onto wet hair, then blow-dry with a medium round brush. Wrap hair vertically around a curling iron; this will help secure strong texture with a slight bit of wave.
