something new. For new hairstylists and even students who are recent creatively—in a different way than they do in the salon—and really put their work out there.” Laura: “Let’s not forget the Contessa-themed segments. Telling the story of wind, water and fire was up to the Schwarzkopf Professional, Aveda Canada and Revlon Professional creative teams. Whether it was the windswept hairstyles created by Rossa Jurenas or the intricate nail designs by CND’s Jennifer Mather, the attention to detail from the hairstylists, makeup artists and nail artists not only created an artistic impact but it also connected each segment to the greater story which, this year, was Elemental.” Anna Lee: “It’s tough to believe that it’s a wrap for another year. Well, not really for us now that I think of it.” Laura: “That’s right, not really at all for us. The planning is already underway for next year’s Contessa Awards. The Revlon PRofessional
Elite Salon Spotlight of the Month is: Lorena Keep-Barron’s idea behind One Salon was to create an environment that not only provided the best experience for their clients, but also created a culture that would nurture and develop the professional stylist; one that would challenge and inspire the growth and creativity of the one Crew. as each stylist at one is also a hair colour specialist, they are able to feed their creativity through playing with the multiple colour lines within the Revlon Professional Brands extensive range.
Photography: Need name please
over the past 32 years, lorena has seen our industry from so many sides, as a stylist, educator, platform artist, editorial stylist, competitor, school instructor and salon owner. During this time she has witnessed too many talented people get lost along the way and leave our industry before realizing their potential. she made it her mission to change that and therefore her greatest pride is the near zero staff turnover at one salon. “it’s the barometer that tells me we are on the right track and our partnership with Revlon Professional Brands fits right in to our higher goals.” You too can become part of the Revlon Professional Brands family to take your salon to the next level. let us provide you the support tools you need to follow your passion and make your mark. “As a salon owner, my first priority is to my “Crew”. Revlon Professional Brands helps us achieve our goals, collectively and individually, by having hands on training, collections, marketing and collateral tools and most importantly total support from their approachable education team. Tony Ricci This year’s collection was called Pelle, which means skin in Italian. I tried to duplicate the look of different types of skin in the hair, and this is what evolved. When your collection comes from the heart and you love what you do, it’s more of a hobby. I have so many looks that I want to create floating around in my mind. Without the Contessas, people like me would never get to show off their work. It’s really important because this is about showcasing what we really feel. It’s awesome!

Guylaine Martel Artistes Coiffeurs We’ve been working together for a long time and we all leave our egos at the door when we're pulling together creative ideas. This collection, called Ethereal, came together as a tribute to my father, who recently passed away—that's why the looks are pure, light and celestial. The princess is gathering strength while an angel watches over her. It’s a highly personal collection for me.

Alain Pereque I spent hours surfing [online] for fashion, photography, runways, colour, fabric, texture, shapes—anything and everything—and that’s what really motivates me. To tell you the truth, the collection was inspired by photographic work, strong shapes and, obviously, the colours. It’s really all about texture, shapes and colour. As an artist, you plan your collection, but it's not until you begin working that you really feel your vision come together. Rossa Jurenas No clothing, no jewelry. I just went in tight because the point of this is to show beautiful colours and beautiful cuts and keep it clean and simple. When I do a photo shoot, it actually showcases what I can do to bring it to the next level. For me, doing this for the Contessas and Salon Magazine, it’s a challenge and a creative outlet as opposed to being behind the chair at all times.

Fabrizio Perciballi When guys get their hair cut, they all want to look like a rock star. With this collection, the inspiration came from Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, and I thought of it as rock and roll mug shots. Winning leaves you wanting more, and the Contessas keep everybody on their game. The Contessas are about people expressing themselves through their art, and that’s really why we’re all here celebrating tonight.

My photographer, makeup artist and I shared the same vision and fed off one another, and we were able to create a collection that I’m very proud of. You can’t do anything alone. If I didn’t have the team I had supporting me along the way, I wouldn’t be here.

This collection is called Year Zero, which represents a new beginning for me. It’s about starting over and starting fresh. This win is really important because it sets a new standard for the coming year for me. There’s so much creativity and talent in Canada, and now I can say I’m a part of it! MAKEUP ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Craig-Ryan French Whenever I'm working on an idea for a photo shoot, I create a title to help organize my thoughts. For this, it was Full Spectrum, which is all about sculpting with bright, bold pigments. Fashion allows me to be more experimental and expand my creative boundaries. I often do photo shoots and slide my creativity into my portfolio. But with the Contessa Awards, it's an opportunity to showcase my work and put my ideas out there. That's really an incentive to keep coming back. CRF Make-Up, Toronto, Hair: Ryan Reed, Photos: Doug McMillan 58

It was my third time entering the Contessas and I played it a bit safer this year. I looked at the trends for fall 2014 and took it from there with my own interpretation of Native American influences with powders and resins, which is what I’m known for in the nail art world. Michelle Oliver Every time I watch Game of Thrones, I admire the different hairstyles, and I wanted to combine feminine warrior style with a high-fashion twist. For the wardrobe, I hired an artist who made each unique piece out of white paper and we attached them to the base clothing. When you imagine something, create it and deliver that vision to other people, you see the impact it has on them. This is really fun work to show my clients.

Jennifer Reid Getting inspired started with a look in my mind. I love dark hair with a pop of colour, which is why I decided that I could have dark hair with red, purple, coppers and oranges. But I wanted the style to be wearable, too. Overall, the inspiration was like a spider web: It started with one thing in the middle and went out from there. I wanted a bit of an edgier look with a bit of a shine, combining dark with colour, even in the clothing.

Thelma Bento When it came to creating the concept for this shoot, I was going through a lot of amazing changes in my life. Suspenders and harnesses kept on inspiring me, and I felt like this was keeping me grounded. Last year, I was so focused on a theme, which took over. This time I wanted to incorporate fashion, colours, texture and creative hairstyles I admire to create my vision. Winning this year proved to me that I should never think something is impossible. When you put your mind to it, anything is within your reach.

Renn VonDyck I was inspired by street fashion this year: bold colours combined with strong shapes. I also wanted to leave it a little unstructured to make it more interesting. The colours were strategically placed with panels of aqua, blue, magenta, flamingo and jade within the interior of dark bases to amplify the effect. I wanted to keep the rest of the image black and white for simplicity, to keep the focus on the hair and give the collection a street-fashion feel. Chanel Laporte For this collection, which I called Pearlesque, I took inspiration from burlesque to achieve a 1960s retro look—I wanted something that was very feminine, glamorous and sensual without being too sexy. I was looking for a static pose, so the focus was going to be on the movement and shine of the hair. I have a very classic feel to all of my work, and I wanted to do something that represented me and wasn’t too much out of my element.

Conscious Coupling
Aveda adds two new products to its Beautifying collection. Designed to keep skin hydrated while feeling fresh and clean, Aveda’s Beautifying Creme Cleansing Oil and Body Moisturizer provide long-lasting moisture in the cold winter months, when skin needs it most. In the Creme Cleansing Oil, the Babassu Betaine gently cleanses skin of imperfections, while the safflower and olive oils offer hydration. In the Body Moisturizer, the trio of shea butter and safflower and olive oils offers a rich dose of skinquenching hydration that is long-lasting, so your clients can keep their skin healthy until spring starts rolling in.
Clients are often searching for healthy and eco-conscious hair care product alternatives. Created to complement the Koleston Perfect Innosense hair colour range, Wella Professionals is now launching the Elements hair care collection, a paraben- and sulfate-free lineup that offers up healthy hair with an eco-conscious ingredient roster. The four products, including the Renewing Shampoo, Daily Renewing Conditioner, Leave In Conditioning Spray and Reconstructing Mask, have a generous dose of keratin to promote healthy and strong strands. Unite Global Session October 3 to 8, San Diego
Saying that Unite's Global Session “brought together” hairdressers from all over the world may sound corny to some, but those people didn't get to experience the close-knit camaraderie between stylists and attendees at this intimate-feeling fourday event—for instance, a couple got engaged, an artist celebrated his birthday on stage, and presenters casually took audience questions on stage. To say that Unite is a family is an understatement. With two days of shows, fabulous parties and hands-on classes with the pros, you won’t want to miss the next session.

in London. While environmental awareness has long been at Aveda’s core, Aveda Global guest artists, including Allen Ruiz, Ricardo Dinis, Tippi Shorter, Ian Michael Black and Jo McKay, focused on clean lines, employing simple cut, colour and style techniques to achieve maximum impact. Needless to say, for more than 1,500 hairstylists from 22 nations, it was an event that married innovation with Aveda’s organic inspiration.
While you may not be sprinkling or dusting colour as Jo McKay, Aveda’s European technical hair specialist, demonstrated on stage, she says you can (and should) embrace your inner child by working your hands into the hair to distribute the colour product.
Using techniques involving winding hair around barrettes and crocheting wool into the crown as hair extensions, Tippi Shorter, Aveda’s global artistic director for textured hair, created a uniquely woven collection, from tight curls to intricate waves.
