When speaking with Contessa finalists, the underlying theme that resonated most was that the Contessa Awards are more about making connections with fellow hairstylists than winning an award. And it’s something that was clearly seen and felt in the comraderie, smiles and laughter amongst hairstylists travelling from across Canada to be at the Contessas. Having the opportunity to come together and spend time celebrating each other’s work—that’s the intersection of true beauty in this industry. For Tony Ricci, the 2019 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, it’s the opportunity to connect with other artists that keeps him doing what he loves most. He says the Contessas have helped him meet hairstylists, makeup artists and photographers from all over the world, and because of this, he’s been able to show his work on a much larger, global stage. As we head into a new year, now is often the time when many consider where they see themselves next. Whether you’re planning your upcoming Contessa entry or sharpening your skills behind the chair, there are likely a few people you’re hoping to have with you to learn from and grow with, too. It’s these people, in many ways, who make what we do all the more worthwhile, and are so important for personal and professional growth. As always, we encourage you to seek out inspiration as often as you can, and whatever you’re planning to take on in 2019, we wish you much success now and always!

One thing about celebrating a major anniversary: it’s a wonderful occasion to reflect on the evolution of the Contessas over the past 30 years. Whether it’s from a technology perspective—converting from images on slides to digital—to collections becoming more sophisticated and refined, to the overall growth of the event. Having been involved throughout this evolution, it’s really heartwarming to see the respect and love the Contessas has garnered. When you think about it, the Contessas has shaped careers, salvaged salon businesses, and identified the hottest talent, and it’s all been a privilege for us at Salon. We are humbled, and appreciate the task of managing Canada’s leading competition. It’s more important than ever to look forward to the next decade and beyond as to how our industry will evolve and what role Contessas will play. Recognizing young talent continues to be paramount and having the Contessas play a role in attracting and keeping people in our industry. So when we introduced the new Contessa logo and trophy, we knew we had to create something completely modern and progressive. The logo marries the words Contessa and Canadian Hairstylist of the Year. The Contessa font was designed exclusively for us by an award-winning typographer. This is an active logo that you will see in a new Contessa font from year to year. The trophy design was a serious undertaking with an exclusive design—a solid piece of etched black crystal with clean lines representing strength and modernity. We hope winners will be proud to display their new trophy. We hope you enjoy this issue showing the supremely talented winners and the glamour of the gala night.

I looked at some of the shapes and tried to figure out how I could make it darker, moodier and more 21st century. So, I came up with the concept for my collection, which I called Shattered Elegance; something that’s beautiful, but I wanted it to be gothic and really moody, and hopefully evoke some kind of emotion.” CONTESSA 2019 TEXTURE HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR Simon James, Avant Garde Hair Studio, Vancouver MAKEUP Kate Nicol PHOTO Shimon Karmel

Bold and Beautiful Simplify your vivid colour services with Schwarzkopf Professional’s Bold Color Wash. Whether it’s a full application or a simple refresh, these four new washes combine cleansing and colour into one step for fast colour deposit and semi-permanent results. The highly concentrated formulas deliver an intense, high-shine finish, with processing time ranging from three to five minutes for less intensity, to up to 20 minutes for higher-impact colour (including on darker hair!)

Redken’s Color Gels Lacquers Get a Makeover. Combining the coverage of a lacquer with the shine of a gloss, Color Gels Lacquers are a low-ammonia, liquid permanent colour. These pre-mixed dyes are perfect for quick application and processing, and provide 100 per cent grey coverage.

Better Colour Wella Professionals breaks ground with its latest colour innovation: Koleston Perfect with ME+. Who wouldn’t love to offer their clients rich, vibrant colour with less damage? Now you can! A breakthrough in hair colour science, Wella’s Koleston Perfect with ME+ includes a dye molecule to replace the oxidative PPD and PTD molecules found in most permanent hair colours, which can often lead to the development of hair dye allergies. The line also features Pure Balance Technology, which reduces free radicals in hair for a more even and pure colour result with natural depth and shine.

Nioxin Scalp Protect Serum Prep hair before your colour services with this serum, which features NioProtect Technology and anti-irritation ingredients that protect the scalp and reduce breakage at the roots.

What’s your (and your client’s) biggest pet peeve when it comes to hair colour? Chances are, it’s colour fade. And just as we take steps to protect against discolouration in our clothes, we need to be using the right products that gently cleanse and care for hair, while also protecting colour. Matrix’s Keep Me Vivid is a four-piece line that includes a sulfate-free shampoo, ultra-acidic conditioner, oil-to-cream styling balm and, for in-salon services only, the Laminate, an acidic rinse used after a colour service to seal the cuticle and protect colour for more than 20 washes. The system can be used for semi, demi and permanent shades, and offers 65 days of vibrant colour.

Get a headstart this new year and maximize your downtime by refreshing your cutting and styling skills. Neuma Beauty has launched Style Collectives, a series of online cutting and styling videos. “With fast fashion and fast trends, where something is in and then it’s out, I’ve always felt like that wasn’t the reality of how people live their lives,” says Kathy Simon, global artistic director for Neuma Beauty. “Style Collectives is more about street style, and how people identify to different groups—or what we call, style collectives.” With four categories: neuUrban, neuMinimalist, neuBohemian and neuClassic, Style Collectives features Industry Icon looks, which are specifically designed for hairstylists, and Consumer Icon looks designed for clients. “It’s an opportunity for you to educate clients about the latest trends in cutting and styling, while educating yourself and improving your skill set,” she says.

Robin Bacon Amazing night at the #contessa2019 awards. I didn’t take home any hardware this year, but I take away so much pride and love for our industry and all the winners this year. Seeing each and every one of the winners brings such an intense happiness for them... it is a really cool reminder of how much passion can be contagious. I truly believe we work in the best industry ever and a big thank you to @salonmagazine for giving us a platform to get our creativity out and for bringing us all together. Canada: we do great hair!!! Until next year, happy creating everyone and I already can’t wait to see you all again and see what everyone’s been up to. @ RO S S A J U R E N A S

A Night Out At Contessa! Spending time with great friends, colleagues and soul sistas! Congratulations to all the winners! What is the definition of success? That to me is a good question... of course it is always nice to bring home a trophy (not this year for me) but sometimes you need to look passed that. Last night, I won... I massively won! Not by bringing home a trophy but by hearing so many wonderful stories from many of you. Stories from people who I inspire and motivate. For example... one gentleman I do not know... grabbed me and spun me around saying it was a pleasure to meet me and to thank me, another person shaking my hand and then rushing me over to meet his wife.... and told me I inspired them to enter Contessa! Sorry for this longwinded message.... but I want to thank everyone one of you that approached me last night ... all those words really are my inspiration! To me I WON! We are hairdressers... we do hair! I love to do hair but I LOVE passing on encouragement and to inspire others to showcase their craft! THIS energy is so uplifting that I am grateful from the bottom of my heart! I am blessed and honored and humbled... that is #success !
