SalonMagazine

Throughout the years, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with finalists, winners and attendees at the Contessa Awards cocktail party and gala. It’s amazing how much the entire event means to so many people. From team building and camaraderie, to hard work and dedication, the Contessas unite the Canadian beauty industry for a true celebration of talent. Putting together our Contessa collector’s issue is always an extra special time. Our team works so hard all year planning for the big night that once it’s over, we enjoy reminiscing about some of the most memorable moments captured throughout the pages of the magazine. For example, beginning on page 26, you can read about each of the winners and learn about their inspiration, journey and so much more. On pages 56-61, you’ll find out more about the three outstanding stage presentations from Moroccanoil, Wella Professionals and Pulp Riot. And of course, this year was especially close to my heart as I moved into my new role as Salon’s editor-in-chief. Though I’ve already had the opportunity to connect with many of you, I’m looking forward to connecting even more in the days ahead. I welcome your feedback, so feel free to share your thoughts with me at veronica@salonmagazine.ca. A big congratulations to all Contessa 2020 participants and cheers to a promising new year!

Even after 31 years of the Contessa Awards, I still get excited and inspired by the entire event. There are so many memorable moments, but the ones that have always stood out to me are seeing the winners’ reactions and hearing their heartfelt speeches. From a first-time winner to a 20-plus-year veteran, every recipient brings a different perspective. While some winners may have had a bit of beginner’s luck, others have waited a long time for their big moment (aka. the Susan Lucci of the Contessas!) For example, Michael Shire of Taz Hair Co. in Toronto, won his first award—Master Colourist of the Year—after entering many times. Clearly, his perseverance paid off! For many people who enter year after year—whether they win or not—you can often look at their collections and see how much their work has evolved. It’s been a joy to witness this level of creativity and growth. These are people who love pushing the boundaries and competition feeds their creativity. Of course, those who enter and win year after year know that their wins are great for business and are never a bad thing! The Contessas mean so much to so many people. I love seeing the salon teams coming out all glammed up, wanting to be part of this special night. Whether it’s professional beauty pros, sales consultants or manufacturers, it’s a special time to reconnect, see old friends and make new ones, and to celebrate success. It’s an evening to be proud of our industry and you can feel the sense of community. As I said that night onstage, salons are the original social network! The salon community is so dynamic that it’s no surprise that people who enjoy attending the event are passionate about the business of beauty and love what they do. It’s not just a job— it’s a career. These people are committed to their craft, and that’s something we cherish and celebrate!

Tracy Newton Aveda Institute, Toronto

Contessa Winners — HARMONY HAIR CARE CANADIAN SALON TEAM OF THE YEAR

Harmony Hair Care Peterborough, Ont.

“The [inspirational] spark for this one was heaven— to create that heavenly feeling through lighting and photography. When we look at hair fashion, we really like to see organic, whimsical, deconstructed hair. We prefer to see a softness as opposed to a rigidness. There’s nothing in this collection that hasn’t been done before, but it was just a matter of trying it ourselves and seeing if we can interpret it a little differently.” — Christopher Asta, owner

Dorothy Tsang Blushes, Ottawa

“I wanted to create an individual look for everyone—to represent society and how everyone is different and could experience a variety of emotions. I like to use warm tones [for hair colour] so I used copper because it’s beautiful. It was unbelievable because [my husband] Silas won this award last year. I couldn’t believe that I would have a chance to win this year. But I think it’s time to take a break—slow down a bit and focus on mentorship.”

Contessa Winners — MICHAEL SHIRE MASTER COLOURIST OF THE YEAR

Michael Shire Taz Hair Co., Toronto

“My first source of inspiration was Iris van Herpen’s water dress. I wanted all five models to kind of look like they were coming out of water. I was watching George Michael’s Too Funky video on YouTube and there’s a Thierry Mugler corset with the motorcycle handle coming out, so I thought it would be fun to do a collection that paid homage to the fun and the camp of ’90s fashion.”

“I wanted to create a collection that was fresh and vibrant, combining commerciality with beautiful, flawless colour, and project a modern vibe that was ultradesirable for salon clients— even the most daring cut or colour has to be desirable. We have huge respect for the Contessa Awards and always love the opportunity to showcase British hairdressing on the international stage. It’s a huge honour for me, both personally and as a brand. Winning this award is one of the highlights of my career.”

“I really am a detailoriented person. But for a texture collection, I wanted the details to be just about the hair. That’s why I chose all blondes with a black backdrop and black clothes, so nothing takes away from the hair. I tend to gravitate to a moodier, darker style, and more of a classic look because of the black and white.”

MULTICULTURAL HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR “My purpose was to bring Afro hair to the forefront. I think too many people are afraid of it because, if you look back at the Multicultural Hairstylist category, you don’t see a lot of it and I don’t understand why. “I definitely look at fashion for inspiration. There are a lot of animal prints that people are wearing, so I was kind of trying to do that in the hair. In the past, whenever I’m doing shoots, I tend to rely a lot on my colour, so I did a black-and-white shoot this year just to really rely on my placement, and not so much on the colour.” CONTESSA 2020 ALBERTA HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR Danielle Barbey, Ricci Hair Co., Edmonton MAKEUP Renee Rampersad WARDROBE Krysta Tron PHOTO Donna Lewis

“The inspiration for this collection was techniquebased. I am always working on my skill set, so it was about the refining of techniques—the wovenbraid technique, being able to shape hair with a flat iron and blow dryer as well as the graduated bob technique. [For this look], the technique used was backcombing— using a flat iron to shape and mould the hair into the desired shape.”

“I was inspired by the shag trend and pastel colours. I love to work with the texture of curly hair and mix it up with straight hair to play with volume. I wanted to create three different bangs: a very short one, a natural one and a very geometric one. In terms of colour, I wanted to use a touch of yellow that would match all of my looks and show combinations of soft and delicate colours.”

Heidi Kenney Heidi Kenney Hair Studio, Yarmouth, N.S.

“This is a very special collection to me. A year ago, I lost my mother, who was an artist—a painter—so all of my colour palettes were based off of her paintings. I really love the graphic shape of cutting strong lines. In a salon, we don’t always get the opportunity to create these kinds of haircuts on clients, but that’s why the Contessas are important. It allows us to push ourselves out of our box or to do things that we are dreaming about. [My collection] evolved a bit differently than I imagined it, but I think that’s the beauty of it.”

JOHN STEINBERG AWARD FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

Luc Mon Coiffeur Montreal

Event Le Chaînon x Luc Mon Coiffeur Date May 1, 2019

With a team of hairstylists and beauty pros, Luc Mon Coiffeur set up a temporary salon at Le Chaînon, a Montreal-based women’s shelter, where its residents were treated to haircuts, colour and styling, along with makeup and nail services. This ongoing event has benefitted more than 275 women. “[Our event] means a lot to the women we help; giving them dignity and the chance to feel like a normal person for a few hours in the salon. All of the hairstylists volunteer—they work for free and give up their time. Giving money is something, but giving time means more. Hairstylists are rich in talent, so giving your time and talent to people is everything.” — Luc Vincent, owner of Luc Mon Coiffeur

Contessa Winners — HEDKANDI SALON

SALON INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE YEAR

Hedkandi Salon Calgary

“Hair salons are typically black and white, so we wanted to warm it up and give it a little bit of flair. The lighting on the stations give us some pops of colour. Our industry is so interesting and so colourbased and we get a lot of excitement out of that. We wanted the salon to have more of an interior design feel, so it feels like you're maybe walking into a hotel lobby.” — Jereme Bokitch, owner
