Looking Ahead
I
always think an anniversary or birthday is the perfect time to take a break from the craziness and assess where you’ve been and where you’re going. Every year on my birthday, I
like to take some time to think about the past year—what I’ve learned and what goals I’d like to accomplish next. Our staff did something similar last fall when we all sat down to talk about the 20th anniversary of Salon Magazine. Since 1993, the magazine has changed with the times, reflecting different design styles, editorial directions, and even logos. Now, with 20 years behind us and hopefully many more to come, we thought what better time to update and refresh? The result is this March issue. We’ve aimed to make the magazine’s design more visually appealing for you, with more graphics, more pictures—and, overall, more HAIR! It’s inspiring and reinvigorating to work on something new and the whole team is excited about this issue, the first one to help us kick off our 20th anniversary. It’s a level of inspiration and
.
creativity that I would imagine most of you feel when you step out of your day-to-day routine and try something new. And it’s serendipitous that when we chose to unveil the redesign, it’s with Education, in whatever form it comes—lessons learned from a mentor, taking a class or entering a competition for the first time—
cutting and folding your foil
keeps us from getting complacent. It's certainly easier to sit back and
just got freakishly easy
of a more fulfilling career. Want proof? Flip through all of the feature
relax. But by pushing yourself and taking risks, you can reap the rewards stories in this issue to hear from hairstylists who have all pushed further, dreamed bigger and are sharing the lessons they’ve learned.

A new way to curl with FHI Heat
Do the Wave Celebrity hairstylist Nycole Jones from Daniel & Co., Huntington Beach, Calif., uses the new FHI
OPI Steps onto the Sand Bringing new texture technology to limited edition nail lacquers.
Heat EPS Black Diamond flat iron to create loose texture curls and a fishtail braid.
2 Blow-dry the hair to remove moisture. 3 Place a small section of hair between the flat iron starting, as close to the scalp as possible, and use the flat iron to curl and smooth hair at the same time. Close the iron with a grip and twist the iron, as though using a curling iron. Pull the iron away from the scalp and let the hair glide through the plates.
4 Run fingers through finished curls to give a lightly messy texture. 5 Starting from the nape, section hair to one side and fishtail braid the whole length of hair. Secure with an elastic and pull the braid out to loosen into a fishtail.
Inspired by the dazzling world of Disney’s movie, Oz The Great and Powerful, OPI skips forward with six new limited edition nail lacquers and a new Liquid Sand shade, What Wizardry is This? Liquid Sand technology offers a rough, sparkly texture that dries to a matte finish.
Leading the Way After a year and a half of partnership with Green Circle Salons, L’Oréal Professional Products Division’s Academy in Toronto, the country's first manufacturer academy to promote sustainability in its practices, has had great success in diverting waste from landfills. A whopping 95 per cent of salon-related waste created inside the academy has been diverted, including 6 pounds of plastic, 26 pounds of hair, 40 pounds of foils and colour tubes and 79 pounds of chemical waste. “We're very proud of our accomplishments, as well as being ambassadors for educating our clients, who have also adopted this renowned recycling program into their salons,” says Jill Liston, academy co-ordinator and the driving force behind the partnership. Interested salons in Ontario and British Columbia can also take advantage of working with Green Circle, and the program will soon be rolled out in Quebec, too.

Framar International has launched two innovative, new foil dispensers, Fold Freak and the Fold Freak Mini. Recognizing that 75 per cent of stylists cut, then pre-fold their foils, these two steps are combined into one. “We’re always being asked to innovate on our already-existing dispenser, so we came up with a way to cut the colourists’ time in half by allowing the dispenser to do the work,” says Maria Gallo, CEO of Framar. “Not only that, but since both dispensers cut and fold the foil at whatever length desired, there is no longer any waste. You only cut what you need.”

Salon Magazine celebrates 20! Cover: April 1998
Take a trip down memory lane with us each month, as we look back at favourite Salon Magazine covers from the past 20 years and find out where the cover artists are now. Stylist: Domenic Iannuzzi, 1998 Canadian Permanent Wave Hairstylist of the Year The Look: The idea was to complement the makeup artist’s butterflyesque makeup. “I thought we could do texture and something away from the face. Then, I saw the model and she had straight, limp hair to her shoulders,” says Iannuzzi. “It wasn’t ideal, but I set her hair like you would a perm, and it worked out really well.” Then: The then-26-year-old had been in the industry for 10 years, shooting editorials and collections for six, and the owner of Toronto's Época Hair Group for two. Now: With a staff of 20 plus—compared with five in 1998—Iannuzzi is still owner of Época Hair Group. “One of the biggest changes I’ve seen in the industry is in education. With the Internet readily available and social media and webcasts, it’s easier to stay connected to trends and education and what’s happening around the world.”

Colour in High Def Schwarzkopf Professional’s reformulation of IGORA Royal marks the reinvigoration of an industry favourite.
Professional’s flagship colour brand, IGORA Royal, has been revamped and reformulated to offer better colour precision, intensity and performance, even under challenging conditions. The new streamlined version offers 111 shades with new possibilities for increased creativity and control, plus up to 50 per cent longer colour retention and 25 per cent better vibrancy compared to the previous IGORA formula.
Making it Better “What I’m incredibly excited about—and I’ve been lucky enough to have been there from the beginning—is the fact that hairdressers from all over the world have been asked what they really want from IGORA Royal. What we don’t want, what we really need, what we don’t need,” says Lesley Lawson, global colour ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional. “Especially when it comes to colour, a product has to deliver 100 per cent performance and needs to be fully reliable. Being true-to-swatch is a big asset of IGORA.” The new colours are also truer, with vibrant orange coppers, fire-engine reds and blue-toned violets.
Extras for Colourists Along with the relaunch of the colour, the company is also introducing new education and a mobile app to help colourists be as effective as possible with its use. The Royal Master Academy is extending its broad program with a 10-month certified expert program that includes versatile modules, such as seminars, webinars and assessments. ASK Business Seminars aim to maximize the business potential of colour services, while Royal Nights offer evenings for everyone in the salon to experience the new IGORA. In June, the company is also offering Colorpedia, an encyclopedia about colour that was developed exclusively for hairstylists. The House of Color app (see p. 42), for Apple and Android devices, supports

A Colourist’s Take on Illumina Colourist and salon owner Michael Levine, of A Michael Levine Salon Group in Vancouver, was part of the first group to travel to Los Angeles to test out the new colour back in June 2012. He’s been using it in the salon since July. Salon Magazine: What was your first impression of the colour? Michael Levine: I’m a huge skeptic and I always take claims with a grain of salt. I was underwhelmed in L.A., but then I came back and started using it on clients. For me, the difference was immediate. It’s a really, really unique colour. Right away I noticed the depth of tone. Sophisticated is the word that comes to mind when I look at this colour. If I didn’t

refresh ends from a previous colour, there was a night and day difference. It almost looked like virgin hair against coloured hair. SM: How did your clients respond? ML: Four to five weeks later, I got clients coming back and there was almost no fadeage. So I had to adjust my colour for that. Clients started asking for it. Generally, with colour, you only hear about it [from clients] if it’s incredible or terrible. My clients were bringing it up the next time, that they really liked the colour.
Regardless of the shade they’ve chosen, clients want shiny, glossy, reflective hair when they come

cent of my clients. I use it unless I need an
After years of research, the company found that the first step in creating luminous hair was understanding the way light works—either bouncing off the surface or being absorbed by it. “If the surface of an object is frosted or scratched,” says Dr. Frauke Neuser, a chemist for P&G and Wella Professionals, “then the light gets diffused and will not go through the object. With a damaged surface, there is a loss of colour and shine. With a surface that is in good condition, there is clear colour, shine and vibrancy that is reflected.” When it comes to hair, that reflective—or non-reflective—surface is the cuticle, which is transparent. “The state of the cuticle is important because it will allow the light to pass through, so the real colour tone can be seen from within,” says Neuser.
Shiny & New The challenge comes in battling the elements that damage the cuticle, keeping it from being healthy and transparent. According to Neuser, copper and other minerals can form free radicals, which pose potentially damaging effects to the cuticle surface. With each colour application, luminosity and vibrancy can decrease if the cuticle is no longer transparent. The key ingredient in Illumina is micro light technology, which encapsulates copper to protect the cuticle from damage. The result: shinier, more vibrant-looking hair.

important for my generation to acknowledge who they are as people.
With the generation coming up now, I don’t think they want the factorybased salons we saw in the 1980s. They want relationships with the
stylist, where they can come to a place where they can really feel at ease and at home. We all have something to learn from each other.
For example, my younger staff have taught me a lot about technology,” explains May.
Never Stop Learning
Sciarra agrees, saying, “One of the things I like about Greg is that he’s
always trying to learn new things, even though he’s been doing hair
for 20 years. Recently, Greg’s been really into Vern, a scissor company where people cut hair with multiple scissors. He’s watched all their videos and trained himself how to cut hair with both hands. That’s amazing. I think it’s really cool that he wants us to know the best about the tools we’re using and give us access to them.”

This is the true story of four stylists, picked to work together, enter the Contessas and be followed through it all, by Salon Magazine. Find out what happens when stylists stop being polite and
start getting real. (Just kidding, they’re all polite— but what they have to say just might inspire you to be next!)

The Road to the Contessas By Melissa Hill
W
hen the deadline for the Contessas rolls around in August, the office becomes inundated with collections, right up to the very last minute. These collections didn’t just come together by accident. Each image
represents months of work leading up to that point: collecting inspiration, sketching out colour placement and cuts, booking a photographer, finding models, working with the right wardrobe stylist and makeup artist. And all of this happens before a single strand is cut or coloured. For a four stylists as they shot and entered their work, three of whom entered for the first time. These four, who all knew each other through their work with Colomer Canada, joined forces for four short days in Vancouver in July, along with their photographer, Jake Thompson, a NAHA winning hairstylist, to come up with their best shots at four Contessa-winning collections.

Make it Work Walking into the four-day shoot, the stylists had collected images and had established their own ideas of what they wanted to do. Then came the challenge of working together, finding models and coming up with agreements on cuts, colours and how the two would complement each other—and the models. But there wasn't a lot of time for hashing it out, with all the prep work to be completed on day 2 at Markus J Salon. That long day started at 8 am, and all four stylists worked long into the evening to perfect each cut and colour before shooting on days 3 and 4. Day 3 dawned early as the foursome returned to the salon to finalize styles before heading to the studio. “My favourite part of the [four days] was the photoshoot,” says Hicken. “Working with Jake, the makeup artist and wardrobe and then trying to get the right shot. It was all kind of a blur, but it was the coolest feeling. You really see how you have.”

When there weren't enough quality models who came to the model call on the first day, the stylists headed out (below) to find a few more on the streets of Vancouver. Tim and Marlo met one of their models sitting in the sun on a patio and convinced her to take on a new look (bottom left, finished style above). “The biggest challenge was finding models and not having a lot of time to map everything out,” says Marlo. “The spontaneity was tough, but a lot of stylists have that challenge.” When you're styling for a shoot, you can afford to be a bit of a perfectionist. The team took their time completing each style, spending hours on each one.
My advice… Tim: “Definitely don’t be afraid. Just do it. The first couple of times, it’s a learning curve. It’s taken me years to find the right team and find a style that works for me.” Marlo: “Just do it. Enter. It doesn’t matter if you feel ready. The talent and creativity will come.”

NOVEMBER 11, 2012... 7 pm
The Big Night! Penny:
Marlo:
“It was definitely one of the coolest experiences I’ve had. I daydream about what I’ll do next year.” Her favourite part of the whole experience was attending the Contessa Awards. “When we went down for cocktail hour, I saw all these people whose work I’d been looking at. People who have competed for years and then seeing my work on the wall among them. It was very cool.”
“The fact that I set out to do this, something I’ve wanted to do my entire career, already made me a winner. Accomplishing and getting over my fears made me a winner. I would have loved to have heard my name announced [that night], but truthfully, in my heart, I feel like I won. When you set a goal and accomplish it, that’s amazing. I’m addicted now. I have the bug and I feel reinspired.” Tim: Proving that you always have to be ready to roll with the punches, Kuo was out of the country right before the Contessa entries were due and his entry wasn’t ready to be submitted in time. Instead, he used images for his British Columbia Hairstylist of the Year entry from a collection he had shot in Vancouver the week before. The lastminute switch-up turned out okay, as he was announced the winner! It was his first win in five years of entering the Contessas. S

Cutting Edge Skills
Talent and creativity can get you far, but consistently updating your skill set is just as vital to your success. Here’s what you need to learn about staying in the know. Plus, a starter’s guide to advanced education academies in North America.
P
erhaps Oscar Wilde said it best: “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” And especially in the hair world, which is so closely tied to the trend-dictated realm
of fashion, change can happen fast. You might be at the top of your game one day and falling behind the next or you might suddenly find yourself lacking vision and inspiration because you’ve allowed your skills to become outdated. The good news is that this doesn’t have to happen to you. Master these four lessons and you can stay in control by making regular investments in your career and yourself.
Lesson #1… Don’t be afraid to ask for help—no matter where you are in your career. Rossa Jurenas, an Essential Looks artist for Schwarzkopf Professional, a multiple Contessa winner (in 2006, 2007 and 2008) and owner of Studio Rossa in Tillsonburg, Ont., has been in the hair industry for 16 years—but that doesn’t mean she knows it all. In fact, a few years ago, she was feeling lost. “I didn’t know what my next step should be,” says Jurenas. So she decided to email world-renowned hairstylist Vivienne Mackinder for some advice and was pleasantly surprised when Mackinder wrote back immediately. “After this humbling experience, I took a one-on-one training course with her called Artist to Artist,” says Jurenas. During the threeday personalized program, Mackinder and Jurenas spent time looking at Jurenas’ portfolio and discussing how she could branch out. “Once you see your work from a different view, it helps you realize what you are missing and what to add, change or keep,” says Jurenas.

Lesson #2… Make sure you’ve mastered the basics. Give yourself a good, strong base on which to build. Perhaps you’re doing well with the big picture, but the little details are getting you down. When you’re a newer stylist, this can be particularly difficult. “After months of practising hair I realized that updos were my weakness, not because I didn't like them, but because they felt overwhelming and frustrating,” says Nilofar Abbasi, an apprentice at Valentino’s Grande Salon in Whitby, Ont. She was given the opportunity by her boss to attend a two-day updo seminar with educator Martin Parsons, known as the “updo guru.” “I learned to do updos that only took 10 to 15 minutes, whereas in the past it would take me an hour,” says Abbasi. “And I had so much fun. Many people attend courses and dread it, but he made it an amazing experience for everyone. His personality was golden. I have never laughed so much in my life.”
Lesson #3… Go for the education, stay for the networking. Amber George, creative director/owner of Verve Hair Lounge in North Vancouver, B.C., makes a point of attending a range of classes and seminars every year. Some recent highlights in her roster: two Shu Uemura Ateliers, one in Los Angeles in March 2011 and one in Montreal in May 2012. These three-day events are offered exclusively to directors and teams of Shu Uemura salons. “I budget both financially and time-wise for advanced training every year,” says George. “I find it’s extremely important to keep myself motivated and inspired.” And, she says, there’s another important reason to invest in education: “In all classes, there are fellow “hair nerds” with whom you can chat and network with, and that is priceless.”
Lesson #4… Never stop learning. No matter how high up in the salon you go, you’ll stagnate without continuing education. Especially if you run your own salon, you likely know it’s not just creative skills that are important. Stacey Staley, owner of Blonde Salon in Toronto and twotime Contessa Multicultural Stylist of the Year award winner (2010 and 2013) recently attended an Inspiring Champions Cash Flow Camp, an intensive, three-day seminar in San Diego. Inspiring Champions (IC) offers businessrelated coaching and training to salon professionals with a focus on increasing profits while decreasing work hours and leading a more balanced life. “I knew my business was growing and getting better and better, but part of me still felt stuck and unsatisfied,” says Staley. “I had goals, but I was unsure of how to reach them and wasn't armed with the proper tools.” When Staley came home from California, she was so inspired to improve the way she ran her salon that she signed her entire team up for IC’s Champ Camp in Toronto this past September and got an IC business coach. “I have no regrets,” says Staley. “My coach keeps me in check and is helping me reach my goals and manage my spending. Plus, she’s a great sounding board when I’m frustrated, worried or stuck. I'm still at the beginning of this journey toward my career goals, but I'm now developing a plan to reach the top.”

A hairstylist at Marcus J Hair in Vancouver, Loretta Tom has been doing hair for seven years. She first got into hair because of a love for dogs and grooming when she was a kid, leading to her vision today to make people look good. e had been looking for the past three years to open another salon,” says Mëdz co-owner Marie-Eve Medza about the new location in Rosemont, an up-andcoming neighbourhood in Montreal. Fabulously nestled next to a string of cafés,
fine foodie emporiums and easily accessible by BMW (bus, metro, walk), this salon fits in perfectly with an area of the city that is slowly gentrifying and where clients want a more exclusive beauty destination. At both Mëdz locations, education is at the heart of the company’s philosophy. “Each person on our team
is well aware of our mission and vision,” says Medza, “and they all make it a priority for us to succeed as a whole.” Case in point: the staff is regularly trained in order to offer a top-notch service in all departments—from hairstyling to esthetics. “There are, of course, other salons around here, so the challenge for us was to offer a wide assortment of specialties while making sure every client feels welcome; a delicate balance that, I think, we’ve been able to achieve,” highlights Medza.
