ANTI BREAK SUPER BLEACHING POWDER

EDITOR’S LETTER

Crimp Your Style

T

ools have always been a part of my home haircare routine. My arsenal includes everything from a wide-tooth comb and boar-bristle brushes to a blow-dryer, multiple curling wands

and flat irons, and a set of hot rollers I use now and again. Ask nearly anyone around the Salon Magazine office what my favourite tool is, and they probably know it’s a crimping iron! Admittedly, this tool is a direct route down memory lane to my teens, and when versions of it started surfacing in our office, I was thrilled. When you think about it, there are some very important tools that help make the looks you create behind the chair that much easier. And while I love trying my hand at attempting to craft a style that’s edgy and modern (and have seen enough professionals share their

Today it is possible to perform a number of hair bleaching processes in one day while paying heed to the hair's health and reaching the desired results using the Anti Break Super Bleaching Powder. Anti Break Super Bleaching Powder can create a perfect light color shade while causing 86% less damage to the hair fiber compared to bleaching processes using traditional powder.

insight to help me do so) I’m nowhere near an expert, and continue to rely on the insight of savvy trendsetters like you. Like me, chances are that most of your clients aren’t professional hairstylists. You probably even have some who can get in a tangle just at the thought of using a blow-dryer, flat iron or curling wand on a daily basis. Even if they do have some know-how, remember that there’s a reason clients keep coming back appointment after appointment: at the end of the day, they look to you to create that perfect and professional just-from-the-salon style. It’s with that thought in mind that we put together “Tools of the Trade” on page 47, where we’ve gathered some of the latest cutting, colour and styling tools you’ll want to give a test run in your salon or on set.

That’s right, the Contessas are on November 12—less than eight weeks away—and we can’t wait to see you there!

Enhancing Enhancements Tips for reintroducing your clients to nail enhancements and how they can help boost your revenue.

N

ails are being worn in a myriad of shapes and lengths from the red-carpet to the runway to Instagram, and that means nail enhancements have the potential to be a business game

changer. “After many seasons of nails being kept at sport-length, the trend is adding length, wearing nail art or embellishments and experimenting with nail shape,” says Erica Nieuwenhuis, vice-president of Bio Sculpture Gel Canada.

TIP #2 “A client consultation should be the starting point for all services. Discuss the client’s preferences and evaluate their natural nail to determine their nail type and what type of treatment would be most suitable to create healthy and durable nail enhancements.” — ERICA NIEUWENHUIS, VICE-PRESIDENT OF BIO SCULPTURE GEL CANADA Pricing can be another obstacle, so Candido recommends being flexible and customizing enhancements so they are approachable for everyone. “Consider offering the initial application as a complimentary or discounted service,” she says. “Sometimes you have to give a little to get some. Susan Boccia, education manager for Schwarzkopf Professional Canada. “On the runways, designers were looking at a colour palette of richer shades, and people are looking at that as a refresh for their fall colour.”

WHY NOW? “People are looking for something a little more age-appropriate and glamourous,” says Boccia. “Consumers tend to look more to Hollywood celebrities for fashion and hair inspiration, so I think they are kind of demanding that we stay focused on the glamour and Old Hollywood and that opulent feel to hair.” Schwarzkopf Professional drew inspiration from the Renaissance era for its Igora Royal Opulescence colour range of six shades of “muted reds, cool violets and soft, copper, apricot tones that are softer, feminine and more delicate.” “Most salons are doing a lot of corrective work in September and October, or have clients that are high-level blondes during the summer who often want to soften the tone or go a little bit darker in the fall,” adds Boccia. “There’s a shade in the Opulescence range that is a level nine,

The ones who work in a very creative, fashion-forward profession,” says Pete Goupil, all-star educator for American Crew. “We’re a little bit behind with respect to this look in Canada, but it’s starting to pick up. Revisiting grunge from the early ’90s is where this is originating, too.” “I would say that the biggest premise of longer hair is that the severity of the fade is softening. MORE TEXTURE Feathered cuts and more texture are definitely de rigueur when going for longer hair. Here, big, chunky strands become your allies, as does hair that looks more undone. According to Eugene Souleiman, creative director for Wella Professionals, in an interview for a 2017 fashion show, “[hair for men in this fashion show…] is raw, with texture and lots of volume on the guys. The hair is quite big, it’s quite curly. There’s a slight feeling of the ‘70s and the ‘80s, too. But it’s much rawer than that. It’s not polished. B E I NG AN I N D EPEN D EN T We all know that education is the key to success, and there are many avenues for learning. Some hairstylists are even taking education and turning it on its head, and here we’re giving you a snapshot of the three collectives that have taken education in a new direction. By Anna Lee Boschetto

THE GOOD ONES ACADEMY WHO THEY ARE A team of five hairstylists and makeup artists that includes celebrity stylist Matthew Collins and his wife Bree Collins, an editorial makeup artist. WHAT THEY OFFER Drawing on their experience working on editorial photo shoots, red-carpet events and on live television, the team at The Good Ones are able to offer technical education in hairstyling and makeup artistry. Workshops include look-and-learn sessions followed by an opportunity to refine your skills. In addition, a select number of students have the opportunity to work with a photographer and design their own looks for an editorial photo shoot and obtain images for their portfolio. Additional workshops will also be offered including haircutting. HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT Editorial hairstyling is a skill that not only takes practice as a hairstylist, but it also requires the ability to learn how hair photographs differently, depending on a number of variables including lighting and the angle of the photographer’s camera lens. Now this same collective, which expanded to include Confessions of a Hairstylist (Jenny Strebe) and Rickey “Hair God Zito along with other international beauty pros has grown to become the team at Pulp Riot Labs. WHAT THEY OFFER Using the same fast-paced, fun demo style of Butterfly Circus, the hairstylists incorporate the latest hair colouring and styling techniques into each session. With a variety of practical tips and advice on a range of topics, hairstylists are constantly stimulated with new inspiration and are able take back fresh ideas that can be used in their salons. HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT The presentations are upbeat and entertaining, offering a variety of teaching methods. 10 HAIR-R AISING Life Lessons What makes a long-lasting career in hairstyling? In a world where beauty isn’t necessarily always timeless, how do mid-career and senior hairstylists remain relevant? We went to the pros across the nation, who continue to step up their game, and found out how you can be in it for the long haul, too.

LESSON FIVE ALWAYS BE EXCHANGING IDEAS AND INFORMATION. “Seeing how other people do something gives you a different perspective. Being a senior stylist, when I go into some classes, it may be a surprise people but there is nothing beneath me. For instance, I attended Sharon Blain’s boot camp and found the class to be really inspirational because she was so open about sharing her knowledge in a very transparent way. You have to check your ego at the door.” –Kristjan Hayden, creative director for Aveda Canada

SALON PROFILE

Sizzling creativity Hand-picked as artistic director for L’Oréal Professionnel Canada in January 2017, Guylaine Martel has had a stellar track record in hairstyling for more than 30 years, winning many awards (and, yes, Contessas, too!) along the way. We sat down with this Quebec-grown talent to find out what drives her. By Yasmin Grothé

S

alon Magazine: What interested you in this career initially and is still enjoyable now?

On set, Martel really enjoys being a part of a team that challenges her creativity.

Guylaine Martel: Hairstyling is

connected to so many other artistic and creative pursuits. I find this incredibly interesting and rewarding. You can work with a client behind the chair in the morning, do a really creative photo shoot in the afternoon, and teach the next day. SM: How do you get your creative juices flowing when prepping for a collection? SALON BUSINESS

BUILDING A LOYAL FOLLOWING According to industry stats, salons lose 30 percent of their clients each year, making the need to implement proven strategies that will build loyalty and make your business thrive all the more vital. Take a look at what these savvy experts recommend. By Yasmin Grothé

HIGH-END EXPERIENCE Fortunately, there are proven tactics to ensure you offer your clients the very best service each and every time they come to see you. Because, “beyond cut and colour, retaining customers has more to do with the experience you are offerring them. It’s about making them feel amazing when they’re in your chair,” says Berry. “Always consider that clients are paying for the service you are providing and they don’t care about your personal problems, so leave that stuff out of the conversation while focusing on your craft,” reminds Louis Hechter, editorial director for L’Oréal Professionnel Canada, and owner of Orbite, a magnet salon for an affluent clientele in Montreal. “Simply put, they are there because they crave luxury, want to be pampered, and are willing to spend a lot of money to get that.”

Because “a customer only becomes a regular client after three bookings,” says Berry, which can mean another six months down the road. “Beyond cut and colour, retaining customers is about the experience you are creating for them. andyce Fiessel got her start in the industry when she was 18 years old, helping out her uncle, Daniel Pritchard, at his salon (Daniel Christopher Salon) in

Regina, Sask. Three years later, Fiessel opened Shear Escape Salon & Spa, a unisex, family-friendly salon and spa. “Our team really prides ourselves on who we’ve become,” says Fiessel. “I think our guests experience that trust and confidence in their service experience; not just the visual experience, but also the reputation of the hairstylist within the space and how we work together as a team.”

NEW BEGINNINGS Nearly 12 years after its grand opening, Shear Escape underwent a massive renovation in October 2016. “We basically stripped everything down to the walls,” she recalls. “We really wanted something classic—clean white, light and bright with modern lighting.” While Fiessel kept some of the salon’s original décor, including its large, oval-shaped mirrors, she wanted to focus on enhancing the guest and staff experience while working with Regina-based company, P&J Cabinetry. “Everything from the front desk and cabinets to the closet and drawers to the wash basins and pedicure benches was custom designed. We brainstormed about what we wanted to do differently—geared towards privacy and overall experience.” The result has transformed the space into a minimalistic haven, filled with glamourous accents like shimmery wallpaper draped along the walls at the washing stations.

While the renovation’s result is easy on the eyes, Shear Escape’s design at heart is all about people. “It’s the relationships that you build. You are connecting with people on a deeper level,” she says. “There’s the life stories
