Beauty is timeless, but achieving it takes minutes. GL Apps is Great Lengths’ answer to tape-in extensions, but with a difference. Where traditional tape-in methods sandwich the client’s hair, GL Apps is sandwiched between the client’s hair allowing the extension panels to lie flatter against the scalp and making the attachment areas virtually undetectable. Add to fact that they’re quick to apply, re-usable AND have superior Great Lengths hair quality, what’s not to love? Visit our website to discover what GREAT LENGTHS EXTENSIONS can do to enhance your career as a professional salon stylist and to see our 2013 educational schedule.

I

Extend Yourself

n my teen years, I coveted the long, full, glamorous locks of the models in the magazines I read. No matter how many hot rollers and round brushes I used, I couldn’t quite achieve the same

effect. It wasn’t until I was in my 20s and working in the beauty industry that I realized the secrets behind those styles. Not only were some of the best editorial hairstylists in the business providing professional blowouts and amazing retouchers working their Photoshop magic, but there was also that little magic trick called hair extensions. I’ve been fascinated with extensions ever since. The possibilities they offer your clients for dramatic transformations are endless. Whether they’re looking for extra length, extra volume, coverage for thinning hair, a pop of colour or even just a temporary look for a special event, there are quality extensions with different types of attachments available for just about every use you can imagine. And they’re not just for models and celebrities anymore, though extensions are worn by many who frequent the red carpets. The key is having the skills, experience and practice to make your faux-haired clients look au naturel. So for this month’s celebrity-themed issue, that’s what we focused on in a story about hair extensions, "Hollywood’s Worst-Kept Secret" on p. 60. Educators weighed in with their best tips and advice on how to create a great looking set of strands extensions, maybe it’s time to take a class and think about them as a way of expanding your skills and your business. We also take a look at fall trends, on p. 58, through the eyes of celeb stylists and on p. 54, the stylists and colourists who style the celebrities

Speaking of keeping it real, another one of my favourite people, met Robert almost 20 years ago, a celebrity in the hairdressing world, someone who industry folks were intimidated by. Upon meeting him, I was pleasantly surprised how sweet and endearing he was—and continues to be. All these people are stylists who are at the top of their games and yet, they still continue to be approachable and generous with their knowledge and their time. An important lesson for any stylist: as your career takes off, never forget where you’ve come from and make sure you give to the generation following in your footsteps.

Big, bold, contrasting colours were in. The colour alternated, black streaks added to the blonde. I styled it with lots of texture and a wet look.” Then: In 1996, Carew was six years into his career and an Avant Garde finalist at the Contessas, after he won a Contessa for Newcomer Hairstylist in 1994. “Hairdressing was my love and I was grabbing all the different aspects the industry could offer,” he says. “I was building the ground work to where I am today.” Now: A salon owner, Carew has a multi-faceted career that includes styling hair on the Marilyn Denis Show, a full roster of clients, including some celebrities, and editorial work for various publications. Over the summer, Vogue Italia published an editorial online that he created, something he calls “the height of anyone’s career” and to date, one of his proudest accomplishments.

Tricks of the Trade

When working backstage or at an editorial shoot, Pattie Yankee, international celebrity nail designer, has a secret for easy nail art application that can be used in the salon for special-occasion nail services—Dashing Diva Virtual Full Cover Nails. “They have been invaluable for me,” says Yankee. “Oftentimes, models are busy with fittings or hair and makeup, making it impossible to get to their hands. I can easily measure them for Full Cover extensions and prepare the nails ahead of time or on the side while they do everything else and then pop them on before the shoot or show with glue tabs. Having Full Cover saves a lot of time and also adds length.” In the salon, Yankee recommends using Virtual Nails for brides or nail biters, who can enjoy the instant length and quick application without damaging the natural nail. Yankee also uses Virtual Nails to create elaborate custom sets for clients to transform nails from day to night. She suggests preparing sets ahead of time, and they “can easily be applied over their manicure or gel polish with glue tabs and then removed for work the next day! I have built a nice side income for my salon making these,” says Yankee.

Fall Star Styles

Five celebrity stylists pick their favourite looks for the season, plus offer tips on recreating them in the salon.

N

By Melissa Hill ot only do they style stars’ hair, they’re also some of the industry’s most celebrated hairstylists and colourists. So, who better to have their fingers on the pulse of what is happening for fall? Check out their predictions for the hottest cuts

and colours, plus superstar products you can use to recreate them on your clients. Tracey Cunningham is responsible for taking actress Emma Stone from the blonde she wore for her role in the latest Spiderman flick back to the red that her fans know and love. “There’s nothing scarier than clients changing their hair that dramatically,” she says. “You have to really make sure that they want it.” Because it’s certainly not quick and easy to go back. The entire process took about four hours, with Cunningham filling with golds and coppers four to five times, before applying the final shade. Tip: If hair is damaged, prep it first with a conditioning treatment. If hair is blonde and you’re trying to put colour

Louis Hechter is a big fan of the lob (long bob) with a fringe for autumn. “It’s a modern style that makes a statement,” he says. “It’s a strong haircut, but it’s quite simple and very versatile. You’re starting to see it a lot more on the street.” Depending on the client, he recommends choosing the length to balance the face shape, with a longer length for rounder faces. Tip: Cut the fringe quite blunt, but with a little highness that will give wideness to the look. A fringe that’s not too short, not too narrow and not past the temples gives a beautiful effect, according to Hechter.

Miley Cyrus’ modern, bleach blonde cut is a daring, grown-up change for the singer/actress. It’s celebrity stylist Tyler Colton’s favourite look for fall, one he says represents a “return to ‘80s grunge gone chic.” The new styles for the season “will have blunt cuts to long layers,” he says. "Styling these short crop styles is always exciting, since they can be worn in so many ways.” Tip: He suggests creating a wearable style by using OSiS+ Blow & Go Thick and a small, round brush to

The intersection where ‘60s meets grunge is where Kevin Murphy sees style for fall. “It’s a bit of glam frumpiness,” he says. “I’m seeing a lot of downplayed hair with glam dresses. It looks fresh and not too done.” With shorter cuts, he’s aiming for a smaller silhouette that’s more in keeping with the current clothing styles, rather than big voluminous looks. “It’s a crooked blunt line with less layering, more internal cutting and thicker and chunkier,” he says. Tip: To rock these shorter styles, the client “can’t be too

What is it about fall that makes clients want to go red? George Papanikolas is feeling inspired by the shade, especially Kate Walsh’s rich auburn. “I love the tone-on-tone dimension,” he says. “On redheads, you don't want the highlights to be too light—yellow streaks on red hair just isn’t pretty.” Tip: “For redheads, I do balayage highlights on the client’s natural part,” he says. “Start fine at the root and then get thicker and heavier toward the ends. For this season, he predicts the trend will continue, but with a twist. “One in particular that I am a fan of is the messy fishtail braid,” he says. “Another trend I am seeing is short hair with some texture. One fun take on this is a rock-and-roll look where the hair is sleeked on the side with a lot of texture at the top.”

Stylist Superstar: Antonio Corral Calero, Moroccanoil artistic director

Alice+Olivia “Inspired by fantasy street style and a cool sense of personal individuality, the romantic looks for this show featured braided effects that included sweeps of long, loose chignons accented by forward-falling strands.”

Cushnie et Ochs “The styles were flowing yet geometric, feminine yet strong, and strongly influenced by the darker, more mysterious iconic imagery of the colonial period.”

Katya Leonovich “We created a modern braid-like effect that was done without braiding the hair. technique, taking long strands from the back, then overlapping and wrapping them to encircle the head. The messy halos were inspired by the feminine turbans of the ’20s.”

Delpozo “The looks were modern and light in feeling and flow. They featured a simple airy chignon that floated from the nape of the neck and upward in loosely braided swirls, with graceful architectural sweeps of hair flowing over the ear

Hollywood’s Worst-Kept Secret With a great set of hair extensions, it’s easy to change a client’s look in record time. Not so simple is achieving celebrity-worthy locks that are virtually undetectable to the average Jane.

through genetics. Now, with improved technologies and the options available through extensions, the service has become quicker and easier than ever, and it’s

no longer just the domain of Hollywood starlets. There continues to be a distinction, though, between good and bad extensions. Often that

difference is due to installation, not necessarily the extensions themselves. One of the most common mistakes, according to Dee Gauthier, is that stylists don’t put in enough hair. The result? Thin, stringy ends and extensions that don’t blend. A Full Finish “The longer your client wants her extensions, the more you have to match that density throughout the hair,” says Gauthier, a Great Lengths educator and the owner of Little House of Great Lengths, a Toronto salon that specializes in hair extensions. “Always order more hair than you think you need, and always overquote the client slightly, then work downward from there.” She charges clients only for the hair they walk out with, keeping the rest in stock. Michelle Lomuscio, the soon-to-be owner of a new salon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and a

Gauthier. To avoid seeing the weight line of the natural hair, you might need to consider debulking the natural hair, especially when it’s thick. Lomuscio will also use strong V cutting into the top layer to create the needed texturizing. Gauthier regularly books an extra hour for the cut. “Cutting extensions is very visual,” she says. “Take your time, work in small sections and stand back to look at the hair. If something is too thick, it’s not blended properly.”

The Does She or Doesn’t She?

Getting Started A big part of creating a great head of extensions is experience. If you’re newly certified, your best bet is to jump right in however you can. “It’s all about promoting yourself, speaking to prospective clients and posting pictures,” says Lomuscio. “You can’t be shy, you just have to go for it. SM: Is working outside the salon essential to grow as an artist? RL: It really helps shape your vision. I loved working as a session hairstylist for fashion magazines, TV commercials, films and music videos, where I met an incredible array of people that opened up different avenues where I learned many new skills. I learned to see though the photographer’s eye and the director's overview of a movie project. And that’s what got me interested in photography and film. I worked with these incredible icons in the industry like David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Ridley Scott and Tony Scott. When I joined Sebastian in 1985, I was able to bring all that experience in fashion, music and art to help elevate Sebastian and our industry. Getting as much information as you can about other industries definitely makes you grow and develop your own craft as a hairstylist. It opens your mind in ways you never thought possible. SM: You have been called by many people an "enigmatic character." Why do you think? Do you perceive yourself as being enigmatic? RL: I think it’s a wonderful thing to be called enigmatic [laughs]. I think it’s because I am prepared to take many risks, and I challenge the status quo. I do try and retain an air of mystery. And I guess some people find me challenging because at times I am unfathomable; I can change my mind because my intuition tells me to. I always trust my intuition and sometimes it’s hard to explain why I feel the need to change the course of things. I think a little bit of insanity helps sometimes! SM: Unlike you, the majority of people view mistakes as failure. Why do you believe

mistakes are stepping stones? RL: Mistakes are like discoveries, and discovery consists of seeing what everybody else has seen and thinking what nobody has thought. Some of my mistakes took me into a new direction, areas that I would never have explored. It’s OK to make a mistake if you learn to look for the positive in it, whether it might be a lesson or direction.

Strenghtening Ties How the relationship with your manufacturer can benefit you. Think back to some of the reasons you signed up for beauty school—is your career following the path you expected? Often, it’s the relationships you form in the industry that dictate the opportunitites you have to accomplish your earliest vision. Nowhere is that more true than with these two salon owners, who realized career goals via one very important relationship—the one they have with their manuacturer.

Eryn Wall, The Head Room Paradise, Paradise, N.L. Dream: To open her own salon. Reality: In the fall, Eryn and co-owner Patricia Malloy will open The Head Room Paradise, which is an exclusive Wella salon. How Wella Professionals Supported Her Dream: “Ever since I’ve been in hair school, I’ve worked with Wella and love [that] P&G Professional carries a whole family of products—there’s something for everybody—so it’s good for all business aspects. From a business perspective [when it was time to open our salon], working with one brand increases revenue through loyalty programs such as the Global Connections points program: the more colour or product you buy, the more points you get, and points can be redeemed for backbar, retail, travel or educational vouchers and discounts.” Benefits of a Good Relationship: “I’ve worked at The Head Room St. John’s for nine years, which carried Wella, and I was a Wella platform artist and member of their top stylist team for six or seven years—I’ve had a good relationship with Wella. Education is also very important to me, and Wella has provided educational updates for the staff so we can have the knowledge to stay on-trend.”

An Artist’s Vision With single-minded ambition, Roy Jouni raises Carte Blanche to the next level. By Valerie Lam

I want people to feel like they’re part of something luxurious, so everything has to be perfect.” –owner Roy Jouni

The Schwarzkopf colour bar was custombuilt with steel-cut flowers, designed by stylist and painter Julianne Berube.

W

hen Roy Jouni, owner of Carte Blanche Haute Coiffure and Spa in Orleans, Ont., set out for Paris on a business trip with Schwarzkopf Professional, he made a point to not visit any salons.

It was during a time when his salon was having work done, and he expected to return with fresh interior design inspiration. The result? “I saw a lot of white marble flooring and colourful furniture and wanted to bring a bit of Europe into the salon.” Favouring furniture rather than walls as accents, “everything stands out against white,” from the chairs to flowers to lights. The same resolute vision is what led Jouni on a six-year journey with two salon expansions in the busy RioCan Trinity Crossing mall. Jouni listened to his clients when designing the layout, accommodating his their wishes for quiet and calm by soundproofing the spa and situating it away from the lively salon vibe essential to creative hairstylists. “My clients love it and can come to Carte Blanche for all their beauty needs,” says Jouni, whose salon boasts more than 5,000 clients.

THREE GREAT WAYS TO USE EXTENSIONS

1 2 3

FAUX FRINGE Before you chop off your client’s locks to create a new look, make sure she likes the style with a temporary set of bangs.

EASY COLOUR Forget about bleaching hair to add wild pops of colour. Instead, add in peacock blues, purples and hot pinks with extensions.

SPECIAL EVENT ‘DOS Your client has brought in a style for her big night. The one problem? Thinner strands that won’t support the look. Plump it up with temporary strands, and you’re set.

You Told Us Favourite Celebrity Styles “Tied....Katy Perry/Rhianna and the eternal classic Halle Berry.” — Michelle Lisa Pargee “Classic, timeless, beautiful—Jennifer Aniston.” — Jamie Pauhl “Carrie Underwood always has gorgeous hair!” — French Twist “Any celebrity who is not afraid to change it up now & then. Which leaves Jennifer Aniston off this list...ugh, she's the most boring of the bunch.” — Diana Ferreira Via Facebook.com/SalonMag

My first manager introduced me to Chris when I was 24. She basically said, ‘You need a haircut.’
