henever I think back to how my sense of fashion has evolved, my haircut and style has always played a starring role. From long layered locks to
a chin length bob and nearly everything in between, I was often in search of a new look. Whether I was coveting sun-kissed beach-style waves or a more sleek and smooth style, for me, a different hairstyle was a vehicle to express my personality. But regardless of which look I was after, before making a move, I’d always consult with my hairstylist for their opinion. While hairstylists and beauty pros have always been a step ahead of the trends, these days, it’s even more critical for success. With more inspiration available through a variety of social media sources such as Pinterest and Instagram, clients might know what they want but they’re looking to the professionals to take them a little further, perhaps into an unexpected direction. In fact, on page 52, TrèsTrendy! will show you the looks that you can swipe off the runways and interpret in your salon. But following the fashion runways isn’t the only way to get inspired and on page 58, you’ll discover how Calgary-based hairstylist and Canadian Style Masters finalist Jag Moussa believes the Revlon Professional’s Style Masters competition has helped shape his creativity. In short, you never can tell what might inspire your next We’re also giving you the inside scoop on how to tap into the student market in the Business story on page 86. According to the professionals, this is an untapped clientele with a little more money to spend than what you might expect and they’re likely living (or studying) right outside your salon door. Get ready for your salon’s best fall yet!

While looking at your staff with fresh eyes may not always be easy to do, often this new perspective may open the doors for them to recognize their own strengths and talents and encourage them to develop new skills. Your unruly-haired clientele—those with fine but frizzy tresses—will revel at Kérastase’s new Discipline system. The innovative technology uses a pro-keratin formula and biomimetic ceramide that help restore smoothness and strength. An alternative to the traditional chemical treatments, Discipline smoothes without damaging or modifying the hair chemically. Using the home care line, which includes a sulfate-free shampoo, Bain Fluidealiste, Fondant Fluidealiste, the rinse-out smoothing emuslifier, Maskeratine masque and Fluidissime, a leave-in anti-frizz spray, the treatment can be maintained for up to 10 washes.

Getting Real While summer 2014 has seen a rainbow of pastels and extreme icy blondes, now that the days are getting shorter, it’s time to revisit your colour palettes and bring clients to a more natural shade of things.
According to Stephan W, Sophie Tessier, and Simon-Pierre Daoust, the colourists we spoke to, one key aspect of the pale baby blondes that were super-popular this past summer was that these high lift shades were often opaque, missing shadow and shine. This trend is slowly disappearing to make way for something brighter and shinier.

2. plaits, rasta-inspired ponytails
3. basket weave, bandeaux
The yearning for braids has not lost an iota of its momentum. This fall, the decorative plait reappears in the form of cornrows or a woven texture that encircles the entire head, including how Guido Palau imagined it at Alexander McQueen. Another stunning look at Chanel featured Rasta braids with crimped treatments and incorporated fabric in the woven braid. The perfect balance of street and couture.
Karl Lagerfeld was very straightforward when he told Sam McKnight, head hairstylist at Fendi, that he wanted something that evoked "lines of purity". Cue two partings, one on each side, add a basket weave around the head and voilĂ ! At Donna Karan, sideswept hair was interpreted as a bandeau that was slightly evocative of the '60s.

rends never exist in a vacuum; and fall/winter 2014/2015 is no exception. We saw the influence of Game of Thrones repeatedly played out as
beautiful plaiting and innovative braids came to life on the most influential and iconic runways around the world. And it seems as though we’re—thankfully!—at the tail end of über-perfect hairstyles, with some of the big brands in the professional beauty industry stepping back from over-done hairstyles and proposing hair that has carefully curated flaws along with a touchable quality. And yes, it’s true, even for big nights on the red carpet and the runway. What about colour you ask? You’ll want to dip into your platinum palettes often, as greyish blondes are about to take off like crazy; and look out for more in the October issue. Here’s how the top trends have come together for the season ahead!
4. new updos With the mood for touchable and textured hair that’s in the air, evening updos are more relaxed than ever. It’s all about ”perfect“ imperfections, created with fingers that demand only texturizing and salt-water sprays to come to life and a few strategically-placed bobby pins sometimes used as embellishments.
salonmagazine.ca
5. undone It’s all about roughed-up hair contrasting beautiful evening gowns. As Eugene Souleiman, global creative director for Wella Professionals says: “I wanted the girls to look ’60s but relevant.” He used a texturizer to make hair appear ruffled. “It’s really about the trash with the class, which is sexy. It’s about the hair looking done but a while ago.”
S
6. extreme nails The quest for the most daring and creative nails continues to fascinate and enthrall beauty enthusiasts worldwide. Yes, half-moons, matte finishes and oval shapes abound, but also ultra-extravagant creations by the likes of CND, which created exaggerated talons dipped and decked out in tiny jewels and glitter.

Jag Moussa takes time to enjoy his red-carpet experience in Lisbon.
Master Class By Anna Lee Boschetto

As the Canadian finalist for Revlon Professional’s Style Masters, Jag Moussa shares his experience on the red carpet at this year’s Style Masters gala in Lisbon, Portugal. Show segments included Nutricolor (above) and the Revlon Professional Digital Collection.
ith more than 3,500 hairstylists attending from around the world, Revlon Professional’s Style Masters is an incredible networking event for
hairstylists. Nine international finalists from France, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Peru, Russia, Spain, Argentina and Czech Republic competed for a one of three awards, including Global Winner (Angelita Lizbeth Carrión, Argentina), Best Technique (Ziortza Zarauza Abad, Spain) and Creativity (Bozena Sarek, Ireland).

As a competition that offers hairstylists a platform as artists, for the first time this year the Style Masters event recognized the achievements of up-and-coming hairstylists with the Young Talent (Elizaveta Fogel, Russia) award. Speaking on this incredible experience for hairstylists to connect and inspire, Jag Moussa offers his perspective on and off the red carpet, along with his intentions for next year’s competition.
Red-carpet ready
Winners for Best Technique, Global Winner and Creativity.
“I was blown away by how amazing
Style Masters was. They took care of us in such a wonderful fashion,” shares Moussa. “To top it off, I had my own star on the Revlon Professional Walk of Fame, and there were people on the red carpet cheering. It was pretty amazing.” Even more exciting for Moussa was the opportunity to see his work truly come to life at the gala event. “When I walked into the gala there was a gallery wall of all the country winners and a picture of my work in the gallery. During the gala my work was on screen — it was a magical moment”
Winning inspiration
“When you work as creatively as
Style Masters requires, with out-of-the-box, super-technical and beautiful imagery, there’s a very specific skill set,” explains Moussa, adding that connecting with Revlon Professional hairstylists from around the globe at the Style Masters event
Global Winner Angelita Lizbeth Carrión celebrates on stage.
drives your passion for and commitment to competitions. “We all have the skill and vision for beautiful design,” says Moussa. “Even though we don’t know each other, we are still part of a community that’s working really hard, and it’s so important on a global scale.”
Rising to the challenge
According to the Canadian
finalist, having confidence makes all the difference. “There’s a balance, based on the project, that calls for you to express freely, then create, create, create.” That said, you need a solid foundation in proportion and balance to be successful. “I have a design background, which allowed me to apply those principles in my work as a hairstylist,” admits Moussa. While he was pleased with claiming the Canadian finalist title, next year Moussa says he plans to take even more time, shooting the looks individually. “Staying true to yourself is important. I was really confident even though a couple of my looks were a little out there. It was my own work.”
S

ith a celebrity clientele that includes Kate Hudson, Katherine Heigl and Leona Lewis, work on ABC’s Extreme Makeover and Bravo’s Shear Genius, Kim Vo is more than a little busy. “It’s fun to see where your career will take you,” says Vo who is also
Schwarzkopf Professional’s global Blonde ambassador. It’s a career that has taken him around the world, and offered opportunities to showcase his creative talents on stage, including creating the looks featured this past spring in Toronto at the finale of Schwarzkopf Professional’s Next Essential Looks Artist search show. A master colourist, Vo believes that his creativity has in part been sparked by working with a unique array of hues and it’s the colour palatte that he says contributes to the trends both on and off the runways. According to Vo, in the past many clients only wanted highlights, but these days it’s all about a state of mind and showcasing your personality through colour. “People aren’t afraid to play with certain pinks and lilacs and have more dimension in their hair,” says Vo. And while they may be more open to playing with colour, Vo says that many clients may still be riding high on the ombré tide, with no slowing down anytime soon. Whether he’s transforming a client in the salon or creating a new look on set, it all goes back to interpreting the colour in a way that

Vo says that having the confidence in his vision and the control to achieve it has been his secret weapon throughout his career. As he continues to focus on upcoming television and editorial projects that may take him in new directions, for Vo it’s all about enjoying each moment. “I’m still having a lot of fun,” says Vo. And it’s that fun factor, that will likely infuse Vo's vision for his next colourful creation. S
