difference between beautiful Ice Cream and horrid slop! Timing is everything in the Business of Marketing your Salon. There are special timing requirements for promoting different products/services. A good example is slimming products. Don’t do the same thing every Month/Season. Slimming products should be for the first two Seasons of the year. New Years (resolutions) and summer for the perfect beach body. What’s the point of promoting slimming products at Christmas! You’re not going to convince anyone. Timing is everything.

Every Day is a SALE day

Lost count of the times I’ve spoken to Salon owners who time their tweets/facebook/texts/email, etc (or any instant messaging media) to coincide with their Salon activities! What a waste. It should be about what’s going on in your clients lives. (Like the slimming example above) If you can’t think of anything...Easy. Ask your clients what’s on their mind.

The more obvious one coming up, Christmas and New Year. You should do everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) to make ALL your products and services as “gift able” as possible and this doesn’t just mean getting the fab Zahra nail colours (page 18). Think multi gift buy, etc. Then there are Birthdays, Anniversaries, and first Salon anniversary! As an industry we are quite good at seasons, bad at promoting New season offerings. So “New Year” becomes “Brand New Year, full of promise and unlimited potential!“ What products and services have you got that fits the bill (How about a New Year slimming massage page 65) it applies for all New Seasons. Or how about Celeb Birthdays or special events. Or how about anything happening locally? At your local Schools, Charities, etc. Get involved. Be mentally where clients want to spend, timing your offering to coincide with.

Top tip 2. Learn how much each and every treatment costs and work out how much profit each and every individual treatment makes. It’s easy, all businesses do it. McDonalds are the experts even measuring how much Ketchup and napkins they use and cost. Many Salons moan they are not profitable (small and very big) and they don’t do this very simple thing. If you need help ask your accountant. It will be the very best £100 (or so) you EVER spend on understanding/building your Salon.
