Stylists and Salon Branding Salon branding is often the key to building clientele and attracting top stylists. Branding your salon allows you to reach new heights, achieve longevity and imprint your name in the toughest marketplaces. The right mix of publicity, events, marketing programs, editorial work and signature salon styles particular to your salon not only ensures unique branding, but also provides the tools necessary for a successful business. Branding is an essential building block in developing your salon and increasing business

Basic Start-up Ideas:  Choose your brand identity – Find and build on your signature identity to help introduce your salon as a brand and household name in your region. Establish yourself in the community by participating in local hair and fashion shows, bridal fairs, community outreaches, etc. Consistent association with these various organizations serves to familiarize and popularize your style/fashion footprint identity in the marketplace. Additionally, it will keep your brand as a leading contender with editors and producers when selecting fashion-forward salons and stylists from the region. And, strategic exposure of your staff‟s creativity will regularly attract new talent

 Generate publicity – Make your salon the „go-to‟ place for the movers and shakers including, but not limited to magazine and newspaper editors, politicians, celebrities, corporate executives, marketing reps, educators, community reps, influencers and persons of affluence. Extend invitations for them to come to your salon for style and color treatments, blow-outs and cuts. Your ultimate goal is to get them in the door in order to provide them with an exceptional salon experience that showcases your distinctive expertise. Because consumers trust third-party recommendations, articles, reviews and commentaries are invaluable resources when growing your salon

 Stylist education – Continuing education for stylists is essential for salon branding. Stylist must be adept in the latest cutting and color techniques as well as proficient masters of the art of editorial styling. Additionally, stylists should read magazines for the most recent runway trends. In vogue stylists produce happy customers who, in turn, are walking testimonials of your salon brand

After years of hair relaxer and braiding, my hair all but fell out; it was completely damaged. I decided to break the awful cycle of relaxing and learn how to manage my natural hair. After research and using essential oils in different combinations for a year, I created my first hair product, an all natural hair oil called Neno Natural's Hair Growth Stimulator! It's improved the health of my hair and its rate of growth. Enjoy! ~ Heather Heather Katsonga-Woodward Author, Entrepreneur, Natural Hair Fanatic

Dr. Brooke Jackson

Hair Tips for African-American Hair Dr. Brooke Jackson. The first African-American dermatologist to be awarded laser fellowship training at Harvard, Jackson founded the „Skin Wellness Center „of Chicago and here, shares her tips with you guys! "I see many young women, especially African-Americans, with beginning hair loss due to tight braids and over-excessive hair straightening. The hair loss is often linked to hair processing (relaxers, braids, curly perms, etc.) started at a young age. Often there are bumps in the scalp which, when present for a long time, can lead to scarring of the scalp and hair loss. Here are my top tips for healthy hair! Look for a hair stylist who has the health of your hair in mind Dry and over-processed hair should be cut every two months to restore and maintain its health Conditioner to the rescue! Deep condition your hair once a week Also for dry hair, use a leave-in conditioner. Leave-in conditioners are light enough for everyday use Don't over wash your hair. It's true you don't have to wash your hair everyday. Over-washing your hair strips it of essential healthy oils that help hair shine. The curlier your natural hair texture, the less often you need to wash it. Most hair types should be washed every 1-3 days, African American hair should be washed every 7-14 days. Keep hair natural. Applying heat to hair everyday isn't healthy. In addition, tight braiding often breaks off fine hair...remember natural is in!

Where Caring is Key

BEAUTY Q & A 72

Listed below are beauty tips from ordinary people for ordinary people…..

Q: A:

Are prenatal vitamins good for growing hair?

“Taking prenatal vitamin helps in reducing vitamin deficiencies, which in turn helps in hair growth and health of hair” Britney W.

Q: Is there a way to enhance the conditioning step after shampooing my hair?

A: “Ending your shower by rinsing your hair in cold water for about 15 seconds (or as long as you can handle) locks in the conditioner and will make your hair super soft and shiny” Alison C.

Q: How can I protect my hair from sun damage? A: “Apply a small dollop of sunscreen to your hair gel or mousse, or rub a dab of sunscreen in your hands until it's transparent and rub it over your hair. You can use a spray sunscreen too, just don't aim at one spot of your head or else you will end up with a greasy looking mess” Tiffany P.

Q: I‟ve tried many products, but none helps my hair to shine. Please help!

A: “Use vinegar. Every few days, rinse your hair with apple vinegar. This helps your hair shine and look absolutely stunning” Lori S.

Q: Is it true that dark, green vegetables are great for hair? A: “Dark green vegetables are on the list for the best healthy hair diet because they produce Vitamins A and C. These both help the body to create sebum, which is a natural hair conditioner” Keisha M.

My hair constantly breaks, is there a really good solution to my problem?

A: “Try eating organic whole grains such as brown rice and oats to improve the strength of your hair. Vitamin C, the B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and zinc are also all essential to good hair health” Cassandra A.

Q:

I swim a lot and don‟t like the chlorine build-up. Is there a way to ensure I remove it?

A: “Rinse your hair with 1/4 of baking soda dissolved in 2 cups of warm water this will take chlorine out of your hair” Valerie J.

Q:

I use a medicated shampoo for dandruff, but it really don‟t work. Any suggestions?

A: “Try rinsing your hair with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with 1 cup of warm water” Trish M.

Q:

Is it true that sleeping on a satin pillow case is better than cotton?

A: “Cotton pillow cases are not good to sleep on. The hair can get caught in the cotton fibers causing breakage. The cotton pillow cases can irritate the hair cuticles causing it to fall out. Satin pillow cases are best to use because the hair can easily slide across the smooth surface.” Gail S.
