11 Reasons Salons Fail, Make Sure You Avoid Them These past years have been very difficult for many salon owners. Sadly far too many salons have failed while many more will continue to struggle. This need not happen to you July/August, 2014 Page 8
Despite these alarming trends I feel a coming boom for well managed salon/spa owners who are well informed and determined to develop powerful business management skills I have listed some of the reasons salons fail in an effort to help you avoid the many mine fields that are hurting so many of our salons and their staff. Please review the following 10 reasons why salons fail and make sure you avoid the following business challenges. Poor Business Planning — most of us opened our salons with out a business plan. We sort of winged it through with little organization and planning. You can no longer afford a trial and error approach to owning a business in today’s competitive and challenging economy. Lack of Business Information — in my opinion there is too much glitter and hype as seen at many of our hair shows. The few business classes many of our shows are trying to present are ignored by far too many salon owners. Failure to Get Help — there are many excellent educational resources you can turn too for help and ideas. As a salon owner/hairdresser I formed Hairdresser Career Development Systems free of any special interest groups to help you overcome the many challenges of salon ownership. If you’re struggling seek out help. Apathy and Indifference — far too many salon owners are in denial and refuse to develop their business management skills because it requires commitment and effort. Far too many complain about staff, lack of profits and long hours behind the chair. They always complain but do nothing about it. Lack of Employee Training — many owners do not take the time to develop their own training program because it requires effort and time. Many more try to build their business by recruiting hairdressers with clientele from a competitor. Getting ahead at the expense of others is just wrong. Poor Business Management Skills — lack of business skills is one of the leading causes of salon failure. As leader of your team it is your responsibility to run your business as a business. I urge you to develop your business management skills, learning to work smarter, not harder. Inability to Hire the Right People — without a comprehensive staff development program, you take a hit and miss approach to building your winning team. Develop your championship team a team, a team that shares your values, goals, and vision will be your major business challenge. Hiring the wrong person to when adding a new member to your team will make it difficult to create a positive and professional salon work environment
Inability to combat and overcome turnover — first you must define the causes of turnover and develop a preventative plan of action to avoid and overcome turnover. Sadly many salon owners fail to seek out feed back from their staff, as well as providing a positive and professional salon environment in their salons. Lack of Leadership skills — as leader of your team you must develop your leadership skills. Reward your staff for a job well done, a little pat on the back can do wonders, praise and recognition, a busy salon are just some of the things you can do to improve staff performance and productivity. Client Retention — the loss of even one customer and their family can be devastating to the stability and growth of your business. Negative word of mouth is the worst kind of advertising. It affects everyone in your salon. You must develop a client retention strategy. Lack of Unity Among Salon Owners — all of us are battling these challenges of salon ownership in isolation. Why not unify into an organization that protects our business interests. Salon owners helping salon owners will be our theme. Only when we unite together will we be able to address these challenges and make this industry more responsive to our needs. Combating turnover, staff pirating , commission and price wars will be a good start. Will soon make an announcement about upcoming salon owners summit conference.

Beauty Blunders
By Charlotte Kuchinsky
Beauty blunders are common makeup, fashion or hair mistakes that set an individual apart in a negative way. We all make them; sometimes every single day. As long as we are happy with how we look, in the long run, that is all that really counts. But for the rest of us who would prefer to avoid those little blunders that set us apart, here are some of the most common. July/August, 2014 Page 12
Lipstick That Is Too Dark
There are certain shades of lipstick that are chosen each season as the shade to wear. Unfortunately, not every shade of lipstick is suitable for every woman, particularly if they are overtly dark in color. It might be because of the woman's age, or it might have more to do with her skin tone. It could clash with the colors she has in her wardrobe. Whatever the reason might be, sometimes a popular dark lipstick color just can't be worn by everyone. It is important to keep in mind that beauty trends are guidelines and not absolutes, so only choose lipstick colors that compliment your complexion, coloring, and wardrobe. You want to stand out positively - because you look beautiful - not because of the color of your lipstick.
The Wrong Hair Color We have all seen it happen - a woman with gorgeous raven tresses decides to go platinum blonde. Sometime it works but sometimes the results are disastrous. Just because "blondes have more fun" or "redheads are sexier" isn't a good reason to change the color of your hair. Hair color should be an extension of who you are as a woman, not a response to some popular new fashion. Avoid making drastic hair changes right off the bat. Instead, buy a wig in the color you think you want to go and wear it for a while, then ask yourself how it makes you feel. Do you still feel like yourself? July/August, 2014 Page 13
Does it give you more confidence or make you fade away? How does it look with your makeup colors and with your fashion choices? Even if you are set on coloring, never make an immediate drastic change. Go one or two shades darker at a time until you reach the color that screams "I am woman, hear me roar!" Sometimes a woman really is a blonde just waiting to get out. Other times, she is exactly who she was meant to be all along. Hair color should enhance your personality and make you feel better about yourself. It should never define you!
Wearing Too Much Mascara
The other big beauty blunder is wearing too much mascara, I can understand that we all love our eyes and we love to enhance the beauty of our eyes, but the issue is excess of anything is bad, you want to look beautiful, but when you apply too much make up, you end up looking like a crown, a creepy witch or an old witch, I bet that would be the last thing you want from your eyes markup, although it is on the top of must-wear list, but still you need to be moderate, you need to pay attention to get perfect look with perfect application, you can try 2 coats to get the definition and couple of as a touch ups, but that’s it, no more than that.
Contrasting Lip Liner
Another beauty no-no blunder and if you ask me then the worst beauty blunder ever is contrasting lip liner, I simply hate it, it never ever look beautiful and I guess the sole purpose of makeup is look beautiful and look stylish and contrast liners only make you look odd and creepy, although it was a very famous trend ages ago, but it use to look odd at that time too.
Final Thoughts Keep an eye on your looks and adopt a simple rule, less is enough and use loss an smooth light hands to get perfect looks
Ten Beauty Tips Using Common Household Items By Charlotte Kuchinsky
Lots of us today are just plain tired of throwing away big bucks on beauty products that simply don’t work as advertised. Rather than throwing more good money after bad, some women today are pulling out products that they already have on hand to make their own beauty products July/August, 2014 Page 15
Tip #1 – Repair dry, damaged hair with an avocado conditioner made right in your own kitchen. Cut the avocado into small pieces and throw into your blender, food processor, or Magic Bullet. Mix in one-half cup of mayonnaise or a few tablespoons of olive oil. Next, wash and towel the hair. Apply the conditioner liberally and work it throughout the hair using a wide toothcomb. Cover it with a shower cap and let it sit for at least 10 minutes. Rinse, dry, and style as usual. Tip #2 – Lighten skin discoloration while you soften it by adding buttermilk to your bath water. Between a pint and a half-quart is more than enough to do the trick. You can also add in a few drops of your favorite essential oil to make a luxurious spa treatment that your skin will love. Tip #3 - Keep your heart healthy by eating chocolate. But not just any chocolate will do, and you can’t eat as much of the sweet confection as you might like! According to various studies, a couple of squares of unsweetened or semi-sweet dark chocolate a day will do the trick.
Tip #4 – Use old coffee grounds to chase away unsightly cellulite. Apply the grounds directly to the affected area, then wrap it with kitchen plastic wrap. Let the grounds sit in place for about 30 minutes. Remove the wrap and wash away the grounds. Repeat the treatment regularly to continue fading the marks. Tip #5 - Make your own facial mask with honey, yogurt, and bananas. Mix one-half cup of plain yogurt with one tablespoon of raw honey and onequarter mashed banana. Blend well in a blender, food processor, or Magic Bullet. Apply the mixture liberally to the freshly cleansed skin of the face and neck. Let the mask sit for between 15 and 20 minutes. Rinse the mask off with cool water, pat dry, and go.
Tip #6 – Make your own facial scrub by mixing the juice of one orange with a few tablespoons for cornstarch and a few grains of kosher salt. Apply the scrub to the face and neck area, working it in gently with small circular motions. Then rinse the skin, pat it dry, and apply your normal skin care regimen. Tip #7 - Use a dab of olive oil to freshly shampooed hair to add shine and youthful vitality. About a nickel size portion should be enough for short to chin-length hair. A quarter’s portion may be required for longer tresses. Just pour the oil into the center of your hands and then rub them together. Work the oil throughout the hair. Follow up by using a wide toothcomb to make sure the oil is evenly distributed. Let sit in place for between 10 and 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water, dry, and style as usual. Tip #8 - Get rid of the old dead, flaky skin on your feet and heels with a homemade foot scrub made from strawberries. Blend about a dozen strawberries together with one teaspoon of kosher salt and your favorite essential oil or some olive oil from the kitchen. Apply the scrub to the feet, rubbing it in thoroughly with strong, circular motions. Next, soak feet in Epsom salt for about 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse, dry, and apply the moisturizing cream of your choice. Tip #9 – Make that green cast on your hair that is caused by too much pool chlorine go away with a tomato juice rinse. Simply wash the hair normally. Then apply the tomato juice straight from the can. Work throughout the hair using a wide toothcomb. Cover and let sit for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then rinse, condition, dry, and style as usual. Tip #10 - Help cleanse and detangle hair easily with vinegar. It has been used for decades as a natural hair rinse. It will remove product build-up from hairspray, mousse, gel, and other hair setting lotions while it also works to keep the hair from tangling. Simply mix equal parts of vinegar together with water. After shampooing the hair, apply your normal conditioner and rinse. Then add the vinegar mixture and work it through the hair to the ends. Rinse again, dry, and style as normal.
