The History of the Beehive Who invented the beehive hairstyle? It all started in Illinois in 1960 when Modern Beauty Shop, now Modern Salon, was looking for a new design for their next publication. They asked Margaret Vinci Heldt to create a new hairstyle. Margaret Vinci Heldt, a hairstylist who owned her own salon, went home and got an idea from a small black velvet hat that was shaped like a bump. She took the mannequin head and sat down late one evening in her family room and started working on the hair. The rest is history. The February issue showed a model strutting a brand new "big hair" hair style. The magazine named the new hairdo "the beehive". The beehive caught on like wildfire. In fact, Audrey Hepburn wore her hair in the new beehive style as she starred in the classic movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in 1961 The beehive hairstyle is a classic hairdo that will always be in style. Currently celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani and other red carpet regals have done their hair in the beehive hairdo. Other famous actresses and performers including Elizabeth Taylor and Barbara Streisand have also done their hair up. Throughout the last several decades other woman in the spotlight have taken on the beehive hairdo as their signature fashion style that sets them apart The beehive hairdo lives on and is a staple in today's hair fashion. Everyday woman wear the beehive hairdo when they dress up for work. Modern day woman know that the beehive hairstyle is classy and elegant. Most modern day woman don't go to the extreme high elevations that the woman of the 1960's did when they turned their beehives into hornet's nests. Modern day beehives are subdued, practical, and only inches above the head. For example, brides wear their hair up with baby's breathe in it for their special wedding day. Woman of all ages wear their hair up for a night out on the town. In any case, the hairstyle that changed hair fashion over 30 years ago is still going strong The Tallest Beehive in the World Marge Simpson, mother to Bart, Lisa and Maggie and wife to Homer, struts a two feet tall blue beehive. Marge has worn this same beehive hairdo in every single episode of "The Simpsons" animated television program. The beehive is getting a lot of exposure thanks to Marge. GET THE LOOK To achieve the Beehive hair needs to prepped with products that create Volume and give hold. Look out for products that contain the following ingredients: Wheat proteins, panthenol, polyquaternium 10 and amino acids. Nicky Clarke Hairaising is great, excellent hold and really controls backcombing and is a product I often see backstage at Fashion week and my favorite product I use on shoots. Decide on how you want to wear it, down the middle, off to the side, subtle volume, impact height, all up or half down and comb into place. Visualize the style. With the product now dried into the hair proceed to tease the root and mid lengths, focusing more at the crown area. If you find your hair doesn’t take to backcombing well or you just want extra hold try a ‘clamping’ technique I use. Take a section of hair, backcomb it, spray with hairspray then run the straighteners over the section-allow to cool then brush out. To create the beehive use a hair mesh or large doughnut to ‘pad’ the hair out, brush the hair over your pad and pull into a pleat at the back to secure. Alternatively a quicker way is to pull the hair into a high pony tail backcomb and wrap around itself. Lastly, Hairspray is a must to keep shape and hold. Don’t forget to dazzle it up with your favorite hair accessories

The Bouffant How to get this hairstyle Step 1: Start by sectioning individual layers of your hair. Step 2: Take the sectioned hair, spray some hair spray and backcomb. Step 3: Repeat step 2 until all sectioned hair has been sprayed and backcombed. Step 4: Take each sectioned hair and lightly smoothen with a comb and respray. Step 5: When happy with the height, pin it at the back. Alternatively you can curl the tips to add more style.

Before running out to the nearest wig shop to purchase a wig for your big day or date, consider these tips: Selecting the optimal wig style for your face shape can help you look and feel your best. There are a few ways to determine your face shape: Stand in front of a mirror and pull your hair back. With a bar of soap or lipstick, trace the outline of your face onto the mirror. Compare the outlined shape on the mirror to the pictures below.

Trace the outline of your face from a photograph. Observe to see what shape is revealed. With a ruler or measuring tape: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Measure across the tops of your cheekbones. Measure across your jaw line from the widest point to the widest point. Measure across your forehead at the widest point. Measure from the tip of your hairline to the bottom of your chin.

Wig Style Guide Oval Shaped Face Description: When you measured your face, your length was equal to about one and a half times width. Your face is only slightly narrower at the jaw line than at the temples, with a gently rounded hairline.

Best Choices: Because of your face is balanced and in even proportion, you can wear almost any style. You will look your best in styles that are off the face, accentuating your face shape.

Avoid: Styles with heavy bangs or lots of forward direction, which may add weight to your face
