FROM THE EDITOR

STE EVERINGTON COVER PHOTOGRAPHER I grew up in the north of England and have been a photographer for as long as I can remember. Now living on the Sunshine Coast with my wife and one-year-old son, I love exploring the marine life that our coast has to offer. Diving is a chance for me to experience a different kind of environment from my day job as a product designer for Google Maps. instagram @steunderwater ON THE COVER This little yellow-tailed clownfish is just one of the thousands of fish on the ex-HMAS Brisbane, an old navy ship that was scuttled a little over 18 years ago off the coast of Mooloolaba. I love seeing this little guy every time I dive the wreck. This image was shot on a Sony A7R with Isotta underwater housing. GIVEAWAY To celebrate the new Sunflair summer collection, one lucky reader will win a Sunflair prize pack. It includes a beautiful Sunflair kaftan, waterproof beach bag and sun hat valued at approx. $320. Go to saltmagazine.com.au and click on win tab to enter.

SUMMER LOVIN’ Whether it’s basking in the sun at one of our pristine beaches, indulging in fresh local produce at the plethora of top-class restaurants we have right here on our doorstep, lazy days at home by the pool, barbecues with family and friends, or simply enjoying what our beautiful region has to offer, summer on the Sunshine Coast is a magical time of year. For many families, it also heralds a much-needed break from the daily grind and school rush, allowing precious time together to recharge and recuperate. Speaking of downtime, we have put together a great read for you in our special summer edition of salt. The magazine is filled with stories about artisans, painters and fashion designers, plus inspiration for summer fashion and beauty trends. It really is the perfect time to sit back,

I love summer on the Coast, especially beautiful beach days, forest walks and lazing by the pool on a Sunday afternoon.

It is the easiness of summer I love. It’s as if the whole Sunshine Coast takes a collective deep breath of the languid air and exhales slowly. It means cotton clothing, social get-togethers, barbecues, stone fruit and mangoes, most of all, the sea. Pure sub-tropical bliss.

IT IS NO SECRET that the Sunshine Coast is home to many artisans, from painters to jewellery creators. There is no shortage of inspiration for these local makers, from the dark blue ocean to the rolling green hills of the hinterland – and all the beauty in between. The never-ending natural palette of colours, the everchanging landscapes and the shifting tides call to be captured by paintbrush or masterful hands. For Sally Gray and Marc Ringuet, the unique beauty of the sea is the inspiration behind their beautiful jewellery collection, Kaikoa Designs. Kaikoa, which means ‘guardian of the sea’, is the lifeblood of these two environmentally-conscious creators. As Sally explains, they have creative blood rippling through their veins. “We both came from very different industries,” she tells salt. “Marc grew up idolising his grandfather’s craftsmanship and followed his footsteps, becoming a carpenter. I grew up with the influence of my mum’s artwork. “When we met, we decided we wanted to do something for us, to express our passion of the ocean and work together as we knew how well we could do this.” Sally decided to take up jewellery making as a hobby and see where it led. It took on a life of its own and soon Marc began learning the techniques and processes. Four years on, they have designed and handcrafted hundreds of unique pieces from their home-based workshop located at the base of the Glass House Mountains. “All of our work is inspired by our beautiful coastlines and oceans that surround us on the Sunshine Coast,” Marc says. “From the delicate coral reefs to the textures of the volcanic fossils on the beaches. We love to incorporate the majestic 8

animals that we are so lucky to see.” “There is so much beauty in our oceans and it is such a passion of ours, we spend all our spare time and family days taking it all in,” Sally adds. Marc’s passion for the sea stems back to his childhood when he spent days sailing with his father. When Sally moved to Australia from the UK in 2012, and the pair met, Marc introduced her to the skill. The pair says that the ocean is the one place they love to be and can’t be without. It’s no surprise then, that they decided to take their passion one step further. “Through our business, we contribute to a wonderful charity called Tangaroa Blue Foundation,” Sally says. “They are dedicated to removing and preventing marine debris from our beautiful oceans. As lovers of our oceans, we want to give back – we try to join beach clean-ups whenever we can – and contributing to this wonderful charity means we can help just a little in saving one of the most magical places.” Between championing for the environment and designing their jewellery, Marc and Sally are regular stallholders at a range of markets, including The Original Eumundi Markets and the Caloundra Street Fair. They are right at home amongst the various makers and artists who frequent the Sunshine Coast’s many markets to sell their handmade products. Take creator Hanna Evans, for example. Markets are her favourite way to sell because she gets to meet and chat with people who love her creations. Hanna is the woman behind Me You & Betty Lu – a polymer clay jewellery business. Between raising three kids and managing family life, she spends her days designing and handmaking the most colourful

and fun range of earrings. She had commandeered one-half of the family’s second living room, and her work table is laden with clay and her creations, mostly floral designs. From whimsical petals to everyday items – swimsuits, gift wrap, greeting cards – Hanna sees colour and inspiration everywhere. “My husband is a horticulturist and we have an amazing garden. I always come back to nature. Mostly flowers, birds sometimes,” Hanna says. “I was originally a florist, pre-kids. After having my third child, I realised I was missing that creativity, so at the beginning of the 2018-19 school holidays, I picked up polymer clay and tried it. I loved it.” Hanna was drawn to the textural elements of clay and drew on her natural ability to mix and match colours. She began by making earrings for friends and family. Her grandmother Betty was her biggest supporter and Hanna’s original inspiration.

Crackling Candle Co

“My middle name is Betty, after my maternal grandmother,” she says. “She was vain and immaculate. A real glamourpuss. It was always a family joke, ‘What would Betty Lu be wearing today?’. She used to wear some of my pieces. She actually got her ears pierced in her eighties. Until then she had worn clip-ons and was always complaining about it.” In the beginning, Hanna created so many pieces that even her family couldn’t keep up with the supply. Finally, her husband asked what she planned to do with the multiple creations that had taken over the Evans’ home. Hanna now sells her range through her Instagram page and

at markets around the Coast. “For me, making is really a form of self-care,” she explains. “Everyone loses their identity in motherhood to some degree, and this is about carving time out for myself. I find, from the beginning to the end of the project, I can work through a lot of emotions and thoughts. It really is an outlet.” Sometimes, these outlets can take on a life of their own. Just ask Nadine Clark, the creator of Crackling Candle Co. What started as a hobby turned into a full-scale business. At its peak, Nadine and her husband Cam were selling candles at eight markets a week and creating thousands of products from their home-based factory. Nadine first tried her hand at candle-making 11 years ago. She was pregnant with baby number two, and, just like Hanna, she wanted to find a way to make money while being available for her family. She spent 12 months testing, researching and trialling candles on her kitchen bench before taking the step into the public arena. Within six months, Cam had resigned from his management job and joined the business. “We transformed our garage into a candle-making room and that was our factory,” Nadine tells salt. “We were doing markets, as well as working with international buyers, shipping to Hong Kong wholesalers.” Today, the pair has graduated from their garage and has a single-level factory under their home. They have scaled back the business slightly to ensure a good work–life balance. They still buy all of their raw product from Australian companies and handmake each product, which they sell from the Eumundi Markets. Their range, which also includes car scents, features a delicious array of combinations, from coconut and lime to lychee, peach and peony. The Christmas range is also popular, with a new scent launched each year (this year’s is pine and orange). Developing scents is a lengthy process, as is the making itself, says Nadine. “Every jar is hand-cleaned by us; every wick is handcut by us. Every single process we do ourselves. We 10

10.indd 1

treat every single candle like it’s special to us. If it’s not perfect, it’s not sold. We still have a passion. I feel like the reason we are still at the markets is the relationships with the customers.” Taking a passion and turning it into a career is a mindset fellow creator Jodi Casey knows well. She is the recycle and repurpose artist behind Raw and Unique Art by Jodi. Her inspiration stems from her childhood, visiting car yards with her dad as he scouted for all things rusty and relic. Four years ago, Jodi turned her passion into a profession. She now works with clients to create meaningful pieces from antiques, brass, tools, jewellery – you name it, she can probably turn it into something beautiful. “I have people send me jewellery from someone who has passed away and I create it into something that reflects their lost loved one,” she tells salt. “I love that nothing can ever be the same. I use different recycled pieces, either from op shops or donations from people’s sheds. Nothing is new, even down to the timber. I have a real passion for creating something out of something that was going to be rubbish.” For her latest piece, which is featured in the Sculpture on the Edge exhibition, Jodi has shaped a pelican from a machete. “I love how it develops. I just let it flow and see what a piece becomes. My shed is overflowing with bits and pieces; I have jewellery falling off my workbench,” she laughs. “It surprises me the direction that my interest grew into. It morphed into a new avenue and a love.” You can view some of Jodi’s work at the Stevens Street Art Gallery in Yandina.

Thousands of locals and visitors enjoy Caloundra’s PUMICESTONE PASSAGE every year – and if you haven’t been in a while, it’s well worth a visit considering its ever-changing landscape. After the Bribie Island breakthrough in January 2022 a sand bar has created a natural ‘bridge’ with many locals enjoying a walk from Happy Valley across to the northern tip of the island during low tide. The changing landscape also means the existing lifeguard service has been moved from Golden Beach (beach access 317) to Happy Valley (beach access 293), just in case you’re thinking of going for a swim. The passage itself is environmentally significant, as it contains important flora such as seagrass meadows, mangroves and saltmarsh. It’s also home to threatened species of turtles, water mouse, dugong and shorebirds. So, the next time you’re pootling around in the passage, keep an eye out for these precious flora and fauna. It’ll make you appreciate the waterway even more.

History buffs and those who love wandering quaint, local museums, make sure to put a trip to Yandina on your to-do list. YANDINA HISTORIC HOUSE is the perfect place to learn of the town’s rich history, see local art displays and even enjoy a delicious Devonshire tea. The house itself was built in 1899 at Bridges, about two kilometres north of Yandina, by pioneer John Gustave Sommer as his family home. It changed owners six times until 1996, when the property was resumed to make way for the new Bruce Highway. The house was relocated to its present site, restored and opened to the public in November 2003. The house is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 2.30pm, with the museum open 10am to 1pm. This is one for those who enjoy stretching the legs while taking in the beauty of the region’s flora and fauna. Following three years of planning, preparation and construction, an additional walking trail has been added at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden. The new WESTERN TALL GUMS TRAIL is a three-kilometre extension linking the established Creek Walk to the Upland Track, exploring for the first time the western section of the garden. The trail highlights a diverse range of ecosystems traversing forests, flooded gums and gullies either side of the headwaters of Mountain Creek before it winds its way east to the Pacific Ocean. This bushwalk is just one of the many walks available at the garden. There are walks for everyone including paved pathways suitable for strollers or wheelchairs and short circuits that are great for families. Find the garden at 51 Palm Creek Road, Tanawha, open daily from 7am to 6pm. 5458 7601 or botanic-garden. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Did you know the Sunshine Coast has a thriving FILM INDUSTRY? Since 2000, 22 feature films have been made on the Sunshine Coast or made by Sunshine Coast-based producers including 13 Summers, The Gorge, The Edge (pictured) and Perfect Messy Love. To help increase visibility of the Sunshine Coast’s film locations, a dynamic new online resource has been launched. The Sunshine Coast Screen Locations Gallery will feed into Screen Queensland’s film locations gallery and the global locations hub database to help recruit and attract screen productions to the state. Meanwhile, the Sunny Coast Showdown Screen Incubator and Showcase will return in 2024 with entries opening from January for local screenwriters, filmmakers and crew to produce and deliver projects and then showcase them at a community festival event in June. Find out more at sunnycoastshowdown.com.au

Did you know that just off the region’s coastline is one of Queensland’s most undiscovered coral reefs? The water surrounding Mudjimba Island is brimming with marine life, including turtles, rays, fish and wobbegongs. And just a few kilometres from Mooloolaba, HMAS Brisbane is one of Australia’s top DIVE SITES. The ship was scuttled in July 2005 and open-water divers can explore the top structure and its large population of marine life, while more experienced divers can enter some of the ship’s compartments further down, including the kitchen, engine room and boiler room. The wreck is teeming with clown fish (just like the gorgeous one on our cover), colourful wrasse, octopi, lion fish, turtles, gropers and more. There are a few diving companies that offer tours to both locations, including Sunreef Mooloolaba and Scuba World. Put this on your must-see list for the warmer months – you won’t be disappointed!

If you’re looking for a great summer location to sit back while keeping everyone entertained, be sure to pay TICKLE PARK a visit. With stunning, uninterrupted views of Coolum Beach, the family-friendly haven combines ocean views with recreational facilities. The sprawling grassy areas are perfect for a game of frisbee or a leisurely picnic, while a well-equipped playground keeps young ones entertained. The nearby beach offers excellent surfing conditions. Nearby, the popular skate park boasts plenty of shade and offers junior half-pipe, grind block, slide rail and vertical wall drops. There are picnic tables, shelter and barbecues in the precinct too. Find Tickle Park on David Low Way at Coolum, near the surf club. 14

Summertime and adventures just go together, are we right? Well, luckily, here on the Sunshine Coast, there is no shortage of ADVENTURE to be had. There is something for everyone, from those wishing to chase thrill or adrenaline to those looking for a fun family activity to keep all ages entertained. Why not challenge your fitness and fear of heights at one of two high ropes courses? Navigate through the rainforest at the Big Pineapple or head to Sunshine Plaza for next-level fun above Cornmeal Creek. Aussie World at Palmview is great for a theme park thrill, or why not gather the troops and head to paintball next door? If you prefer two feet on the ground, Amaze World at Tanawha is a perfect outing and is home to the Bellingham Hedge Maze, mini golf course and nature playground. It also recently took out Sunshine Coast Business of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. And finally, if you have a need for speed, be sure to check out the Big Kart Track at Landsborough. Now the question is, what adventure will you choose?

PHOTOS: Visit Noosa

This could possibly be one of Noosa’s most overlooked hidden gems. Boreen Point is a small township and home to Queensland’s largest natural saltwater lake, LAKE COOTHARABA, just 30 minutes from Noosa Heads. The lake is 10 kilometres long and five kilometres wide and is the gateway to Australia’s only everglades system. The area is perfect for nature lovers and families, with this shallow lake making it a safe place to swim, kayak and play. While in the area, why not stop for lunch at the historic Apollonian Hotel? First licensed in 1868, in the Gympie Shire, the original building burned down in the 1870s and was rebuilt out of Gympie hardwood timbers. The whole building was transported (in four pieces) to Boreen Point in 1986 and lovingly put back together to reopen in 1987. To get to Boreen Point follow McKinnon Drive from Tewantin, or Louis Bazzo Drive from Pomona.

A Sunshine Coast picnic and playground favourite has been recognised with an international award that will see its popularity soar to new heights. BUDERIM VILLAGE PARK, at the intersection of King Street and Gloucester Road, is a panoramic paradise with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Glass House Mountains. The three-hectare public park features lush open spaces, a multitude of shaded playground offerings, an amphitheatre, pathways, barbecues and modern amenities. And now it’s been awarded The Green Flag Award, which recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces that set the benchmark for the management of recreational outdoor spaces around the world. It’s one of only a handful of Queensland parks to have received this prestigious accolade, and joins fellow Sunshine Coast attraction, Kings Beach Park. 16

Are you a lover of all things Lego? Here at salt, we have discovered the perfect place to find individual pieces of Lego to build or complete a set. What’s better is it doubles as a social enterprise helping keep locals in their homes. CHARITY BRICKS opened earlier this year, with the pre-loved Lego store full of donated pieces ready for enthusiasts to sift through. With about 600 kilograms of Lego in his garage, Ken Roberts decided to begin the store, donating half of his personal collection to the cause. “People can come in and buy individual pieces of Lego, pieces they have been hunting for to complete old Lego sets or parts they are looking for to create their own individual sets,” Kent says. Charity Bricks supports Aus Living Support, including its material aid and rental supplement programs. Charity Bricks is open at 102 Howard Street, Nambour, every Tuesday and Saturday from 9am.

TO START THIS piece with ‘it was a sunny day’ might seem a bit cliché. But honestly, after stepping out into the warm sunshine, rolling surf filling the air and the scents of summer wafting by, I couldn’t think of a better opening. I mean, Peregian Beach is almost an ode to summer days on the Sunshine Coast itself. So, after parking our car under the shade of the pines in this little beachside town, I decided the cliché fit. My husband and I were on an adventure, and it took us to the sandy shores of Peregian. We wanted to find some good food, a local tipple to try, some funky fashion to buy and yummy treats to eat. We certainly picked the right place because Peregian Beach has all of that and more. And perhaps one of my favourite things about this place is that everything is so accessible. The township is built around The Village, a selection of boutique shops and gourmet food outlets where you could easily get lost wandering for hours. And well, we did. The first thing that caught my eye as we walked up from the car park to The Village was Harry, otherwise known as Big H, the friendly resident groodle helping run the show at The Local. How could we walk past without stopping for a pet and a squiz inside this innovative concept store? Inspired by the free-spirited, small beach town nostalgia of times gone by, it was a lot of fun browsing the eclectic mix of apparel, homewares, gifting, retro vinyl and much more. Fashion was the theme for the morning, and we found plenty of it. Everything from laid-back surfer threads to boho dresses, elegant upmarket vibes, statement pieces and bespoke

The Village is a treasure trove of surprises

jewellery, not to mention the sustainable textiles. And fashion is just the beginning. The Village is also filled with incredible homewares, luxury textures and patterns, vintage finds and antiques, artwork, skincare and so much more. We meandered through the stores, chatting to the friendly merchants, browsing, smelling, touching, before a quick coffee stop at one of our favourite Peregian Beach restaurants,

Periwinkle. Frank and his team always make you feel so welcome. Oh, and did I mention how delicious the coffee is? If you’re hungry, they also serve up fantastic French Mediterranean cuisine cooked with love and local ingredients. The day was still young, and we were more in the mood for a little snack, so we strolled the 50 metres or so from Periwinkle to Peregian Pantry, a beautiful little shop serving up artisan pantry items, including some delicious jars of local relish. There is also pottery, candles and, of course, the thing they are best known for, Heavenly Gelato. And trust me, it is heavenly, with flavours like biscoff, balsamic strawberries, espresso, cookies and cream and my favourite, lemon cheesecake, which tastes exactly like a lemon cheesecake. Delicious. I could have eaten about three servings. Now, it wouldn’t be right to talk about a day at Peregian Beach without mentioning the beach itself. So that was our next stop. It was a little windy during our visit, so we didn’t jump in the ocean but instead ditched the shoes and wandered along the long stretch of white sand, dipping our toes in the rippling waves as they rolled up onto the shore. The beach was glorious. The walk certainly worked up an appetite, so after a quick outfit change into the top I had just purchased at The Local, we wandered over to the Peregian Beach Hotel, a modern bistro and sports bar on David Low Way. The pastel pink colours and artwork painted on the walls in the outside dining area caught my eye. Paired with palms and garden seating, I knew this was the spot to enjoy a nice cold beer and share a meal. We opted for salt and pepper squid, a woodfired pizza and the old faithful, chicken parmy. We sat and ate the afternoon away with smiles on our faces, chatting about the next time we would visit this pretty little seaside town. Perhaps we could check

out the communal veggie garden known as Veggie Village, or browse the iconic markets held on the first and third Sunday of each month. We could even visit with the kids and take part in one of the school holiday-planned events. Either way, we knew we would be back soon.

WHILE YOU’RE IN THE AREA: • If you decide to bring the little ones with you, Peregian Beach has a great little playground suitable for kids of all ages. It is surrounded by open grass, perfect climbing trees and a skate bowl for skateboards, blades and bikes. • Want to get an uninterrupted ocean view? Follow the boardwalk through wildflowers and she-oaks for a three-kilometre return forest walk from The Village through to Stumers Creek, Coolum. • Emu Mountain is another great walk and a fairly easy five-kilometre return trip from The Village. Trek along the winding boardwalk, passing over scrubland, and be rewarded with a mesmerising 360-degree view from the summit. • Take a quick drive north to Lake Weyba and enjoy a bush walk in the national park, bird watching and water sports such as kayaking and kiteboarding or pack a picnic and chill. • Head south and explore Coolum where you can hire a surfboard, visit the Blast Aqua Park, climb Mount Coolum or have a hit of golf.

LIQUID GOLD WORDS JANE STEPHENS PHOTOS MEGAN GILL

TO TAKE ON an audacious, difficult physical challenge is considered a gutsy pursuit. It might be a marathon or a triathlon, a long ocean swim or an all-day adventure race, but thousands of Sunshine Coasters take on such challenges each year, rising to the contest and reaching beyond their known comfort zone as humans have done for millennia. And while these warriors may come in all shapes, sizes and ages, what is consistent is that the road is long and the training is tough. In recent times, these athletes’ petrol tanks are more and more likely to be fuelled with Infinit Nutrition, a liquid sustenance that has been formulated through an avalanche of research and testing. The company was founded in the United States, but the Australian franchise is in the Coolum industrial area on the Sunshine Coast, with Jason and Rachael Cheshire at the helm. The couple’s own athletic accomplishments are inspiring, but it is one thing to do and another to help others. Their passion for their products and their people is plain. “It is pretty cool to have helped do something that directly helps someone achieve a personal goal, that makes them a better athlete by mixing our products with water and drinking it,” Jason says. “We do really love that.” The couple makes a fierce team. They have ridden some big waves together over the past decade or so – Jason has had a series of major injuries and health challenges, and working and living together is not for everyone. But their humour, strong work ethic and camaraderie, combined with a love of their fur kids Murphy Brown and Augustus Albert, have carried them through. Rachael, 46, a former police officer, has been running the 24

24.indd 1

social media and marketing arms of the business for the past eight years. But she is also in charge of sponsorship, picking and packing and dispatch. Jason says she does the work of five people. Jason, 49, bought the franchise for Australia in 2010. He had owned a bakery in Emerald, then a motel in Hervey Bay and was introduced to Infinit by acclaimed triathlon coach Nick Croft in Noosa, as he pursued his own triathlon, mountain biking and adventure racing performance goals. “Back in 2008 and 2009, liquid nutrition was just not a thing,” Jason says. “The standard perception was that is just wouldn’t work. People were using bars and things, but I was taking it for probably two years and never told anyone in Hervey Bay because I just did not want the negative chitchat.” What sets Infinit apart from other nutrition solutions is

SALT

24/11/2023 1:50:57 PM

Jason recovering in hospital after being hit by a car in 2019

that it is most often custom-made and available off the shelf. Liquid nutrition has to provide energy, plus all the essentials such as salts and vitamins to keep a person going who is moving, sweating and stretching themselves for many hours. “It was major for me – a game changer,” Jason says. “I didn’t have to think about taking muesli bars or gels or anything: I didn’t have to think about my nutrition plan and could just go out and train. That is massive for an athlete.” The pair knows a lot about pushing the limits of endurance. Jason was twice selected to compete in triathlon’s blue riband event, the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. The race is widely regarded as the pinnacle human endurance event – a 3.9-kilometre swim, 180.2-kilometre cycle and 42.2-kilometre run back-to-back – in tough, tropical conditions. With 15 Ironman completions under his belt, as well as numerous two-day adventure races, ultramarathon and marathon events, Jason knows a lot about enduring and fuelling the body to not just cope but to finish well. Rachael, who was always into sport and fitness, was introduced to triathlons when she fell in love with Jason. She has completed numerous half Ironman distance triathlons, road marathons and half marathons, as well as ocean swims. When Jason bought the franchise, it was a small business, turning over just $10,000 a year. The business has been growing consistently at 20 per cent a year – a rate most firms would dream of. For the uninitiated, liquid nutrition may sound all hocus pocus. Sure, so-called sports drinks have been around and used by everyday exercisers for years, but nutrition solutions as a fuel source while on the move still seem like space-age stuff to many. But the science is in. Studies in reputed sports journals have found performance gains because liquid empties out of the gut faster than solids, leading to quicker utilisation and avoiding the nausea that can be a huge problem for those out on a long ride or run. Jason has networked with the nation’s premier sports dietitians, who are also former elite athletes, including Steph Cronin – former champion surf lifesaver – and former ultramarathon champion Steph Gaskell. Dieticians can assess what the athlete needs and the Infinit powder makers apply that recipe to the letter. In addition, the company has its own nutrition consultants who offer advice for free. Given no two sports are alike and no two athletes are alike, this is a boon, particularly for those who are everyday people. “It is nothing for a customer to place 15-20 orders with us,” Rachael says. “That is a lot of money to spend and a lot of product to use, and we have to get it right when they are depending on us for their performance.” Each year, the Cheshires select 120 sportspeople to sponsor, with most being regular age groupers just giving something physically challenging a good go. But they also have an impressive list of elites on their sponsorship books, including newly crowned Coolangatta Gold winner, Sunshine Coast-grown surf sport queen Lana Rogers. Mountain bikers, road cyclists, triathletes, surf lifesavers and trail runners all have places in their sought-after stable. “It is just great for us,” Jason says. “We get to help build a community. We get to help sportspeople with our products. It’s a pretty good job to have.”

SOUL SISTERS WORDS LAHNEE PAVLOVICH PHOTOS PABLO PAVLOVICH AND CONTRIBUTED

THIRTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD Angelina Pallisier just got back from Bali. Her hair is sun-kissed, her skin is glowing and you can see her eyes light up as she recalls the most recent Sisterhood of Surf (SOS) retreat – a venture that began based on nothing more than the simple desire to share a love of surfing with other women. “I grew up between Eumundi and Redcliffe with a surfing family and every second weekend I was out in the water with my dad and my brother,” Angie says. “I was that teenager rocking all things Roxy and Billabong and wearing that choker shell necklace, but I was known as the queen of the whitewash by my family,” she laughs. “When COVID happened, my business was affected, so I decided to throw myself into the deep end, literally, and learn how to surf better. I signed up to surfing programs, hired coaches and the personal trainer in me created fitness programs to improve my movement in the water.” In June 2022, Angie went on an eight-day surf camp in Indonesia. It was a trip where all levels were welcomed. The waves, though, were definitely not beginner-friendly. “There was a woman crying, laying on her board out the back and when I went over to help, it clicked that this inclusive retreat wasn’t really all that inclusive and so many of the participants were simply overwhelmed,” she says. “Surfing should be a fun and positive experience, so that night I came up with the idea to run my own retreats for women who were at a beginner level. I worked on a plan that included 28

28.indd 1

surfing, adventure, new experiences, motivational coaching, culture and, well, sisterhood. I sent a proposal to a well-known surf retreat in Indonesia; we spoke two days later, and that’s how Sisterhood of Surf International Retreats started.” Sisterhood of Surf is a community of women supporting each other through the power of the ocean. “I ran my very first one-day surf event on the Sunshine Coast in November 2022, hoping to show others what the ocean has done for me. I wanted it to be the beginning of my own surf community. And, well, it worked. “Since that day, we have been able to get 160 women into the water through our one-day events and many more with the retreats,” Angie says. After running her own successful fitness business for 12 years, the former health coach says nothing beats the community she’s built with the sisterhood. “I have done some amazing things in my career,” she tells salt. “I have run large health organisations, helped others to start up businesses and have loved growing my own business, The Active Sisters. “However, Sisterhood of Surf has been the highlight. I love seeing change in women. I love surf, travel, adventure, and I love empowering others. “We take women out of their normal busy environments and give them a chance to connect with themselves and build confidence. Imagine a group of women coming together, excited yet anxious with self-doubt, but then collectively, they

SALT

24/11/2023 1:56:55 PM

discover that they can learn this new skill and have fun surrounded by other women who support them. “After every overseas retreat, or even at the end of a surf day in Caloundra, I am honestly standing in front of a different group of women to who they were at the start. And that’s why I know what we are doing is so powerful and more than just surf.” A Noosa girl at heart, Angie is passionate about bringing women to her home breaks too. “Some of my fondest memories with my dad are from days out in the ocean at Noosa Heads,” she says. “It is where I learnt how to surf. I love that in a place like Noosa, you don’t even need to be catching the waves to enjoy the stunning surrounds and really feel grounded.” Since 2022, all one-day events have booked out. Angie and the crew have also had three successful female beginner-level surf retreats, with six more sold out in Indonesia and Lennox Head. Sisterhood of Surf hosts the one-day events at Happy Valley in Caloundra. These events include an on-land mobility

and movement class, surf education and a lesson with a local surf school, healthy catered food, a goodie bag and even beach cabanas and music, so after the surf, you get to hang out with your new surf friends. “On these days, we also help to connect women with other like-minded women, so you become another sister’s ‘woohoo girl’ for the day. Everyone in our community also can join in for weekly Zoom surf-specific workouts and connect by chatting in our online groups,” Angie says. “My next goal is to grow the SOS family so we can expand our events to new locations, host more retreats and more collaborations.” And what is Angie’s advice for those wanting to get in the water or try something new? “Don’t forget to smile, maybe even throw in a ‘yeow’ if you see someone catch a good wave. Kindness doesn’t cost anything, and it could make someone’s day.” sisterhoodofsurf.com

FILMING IN SOME of the world’s most exotic locations may be all in a day’s work for leading surfwear photographer and videographer Chloe Hutchison, but this artist’s heart lies firmly planted in the sea and sand of the Sunshine Coast. The ocean, in fact, has always beckoned her, and she reflects its images through her expert lens – particularly the images relating to those who ride the rolling surf. So captivating is Chloe’s work it caught the eye of several global brands, including surfwear giant Roxy, whom Chloe now works with on multiple campaigns each year. She is also the founder and head of video production company Havana Productions and the founder of Havana Haus – a photographic, podcast and production studio launched in July this year. Her synchronicity with the sea is equalled only by her creative talent and passion for storytelling through film and photography – a passion that was ignited when she was a teenager working in a Kodak camera shop selling digital cameras and developing film. “I was so intrigued by the process of film developing and being able to manually do that process, and the creativity behind it,” Chloe tells salt. “And I loved the editing side of things – manually calibrating film and printing them for customers. Even though the images I was working with were [mostly] what families took of their kids, we would get the occasional photographer drop their film in and that was exciting.” Eventually studying a Bachelor of Film in Brisbane, mother-of-two Chloe paired her love of the ocean with her

creative passion, with spectacular results. While working as an intern with a global company, she honed her videography and editing skills while spending every spare minute of her time on her own business ‘on the side’ – Havana Productions, established about eight years ago. The planets – and oceans – came to align, and soon Chloe’s business was too busy to be a side hustle. Her client base expanded to include some of the world’s most recognised brands. “I love the ocean; I’ve always loved the ocean, and I’ve always loved surf photography, so I was gravitating towards the surf industry,” she tells salt. “But I didn’t want to box myself as a surf photographer or filmer, so I stepped into surf fashion. “I would do a lot more lifestyle campaigns for brands, so I could be on the beach still, but shooting fashion, and then stepping more into the editorial world, which led me into the studio.” Working in studios “all over the place” gave Chloe the idea for what would become Havana Haus, as she had always struggled to find a studio that offered everything she needed, and she saw a huge gap in the market. It turns out she was right, with content creators, podcasters, and photographers from Queensland and interstate among the many creatives flocking to the new venue to make use of its multiple spaces. Chloe is also the in-house photographer and videographer at Havana Haus, which means she is kept well and truly on her 34

toes in the studio. Nothing, however, will keep her from the ocean, and she’s always on the lookout for the most beautiful beach she can find. She has worked in the Maldives, Indonesia, and extensively in Noosa, Coolum and other parts of the Sunshine Coast. “A lot of photographers will use the same places, so I like to go elsewhere,” she says. “If I’ve found a favourite place and then I find it’s being used, I like to move on pretty quickly. “But we have the most gorgeous beaches here, so it’s easy.”

LIFE STORIES

Moffat Beach What is your favourite restaurant? The restaurants I frequent are usually Tony Kelly’s, because of the fabulous food and service but also because Tony is generous. I try to direct my dollars to local businesses that give back to the Sunshine Coast community. Before I spend a cent, I’ll go through the long list of businesses that support Wishlist or Mix FM’s Give Me 5 – and they’ll win my spend every time. What is your favourite shop in the region? Sunshine Coast Art and Framing Gallery has an impressive range of art, and the current exhibition – the Holmes Art Prize – is truly extraordinary. The owners, Paula and John Gowland are an inspirational couple who overcame great adversity to then help others facing the same struggles. As corporate partners of Wishlist, they support everything we do to help patients of local hospitals who, like Paula, find their lives irrevocably changed forever due to one misstep. They showcase the work of local and international artists, and I find beauty and inspiration in every visit.

Lisa Rowe

What do you do? For the past 23 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with a proactive community to provide the ‘extras’ to the local health system that every Coast, Noosa and Gympie family rely on. I work for the local hospital foundation, Wishlist. The Coast is an exceptionally generous place, and through donations to Wishlist and Mix FM’s Give Me 5, we’ve enhanced services – and funded new ones – across all areas of local health in priceless ways.

What is your most prized possession? In my mother’s final years, she discovered creative talents that she’d never had the time to explore. The beautiful clay pots, hanging possums and ‘fat ladies’ she made are my most prized possessions, along with some wooden carvings my grandfather made and some gifts my daughter made me when she was little. Oh, and my dachshund Bogart! What is your favourite meal? I’d struggle to go past the prawn risotto at Bocca and the famous garlic bread!

Bocca

What would you do if you were not in your current career? I seriously can’t imagine what would inspire me more than the work we do at Wishlist. When I was 12, my happy, safe little world was turned upside down when my little brother was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. Our family was uprooted from our home, and eventually, we were forced to separate for months while he fought for his life. If it weren’t for community support, things would’ve been so much more difficult for my family, and once you experience the vulnerability of a health crisis, you never forget. I find immense reward in supporting our health heroes and helping to lighten the load for others enduring dark days. When you have visitors, where do you take them to show off our beautiful region? Moffat Beach is my favourite place on the Coast, so I always start there – usually with a yoga session on the beach. The walkway from Moffat to Bulcock Beach is a must, as is the Noosa National Park walk to Hells Gate. For motivation, I promise reward at The Pocket, Kings Beach Bar or Noosa Surf Club when we’re done. 38

home. At Wishlist I get to see the best of humanity every day. I work with devoted health staff striving to provide the best possible care for our loved ones, an exceptional team and a generous community giving all they can to make the lives of those who live here even better – simply because they can. How great is life! What was the best day of your life? So many, but I guess I think of a recent holiday in Mallorca with my partner Tony and my daughter Jessica, where we were joined by some of her friends who were travelling through Europe. We spent the day on a boat off Palma, exploring the coastline, swimming, eating and laughing and marvelling at how lucky we all were to be together. Many times that day, one of the ‘kids’ would say, “This is the best day of my life”, and it will feature forever as one of mine. Any day filled with such love and gratitude is the best day.

London Christmas What are you most looking forward to at the moment? My daughter moved to London in April, so I’m heading to London for Christmas. Then we’re both spending time with friends in the French Alps. It will be my first cold Christmas, so I’m looking forward to experiencing the festive feels of a freezing London with my girl and then some skiing, mulled wine and loads of laughs with friends. What are you reading now? I don’t get time to read as much as I’d like, however, I walk a lot and listen to audio

Read

Springsteen books or podcasts when I do. I love a memoir or autobiography read to me by the author. I’m currently listening to Surrender by Bono (again). Your favourite song? I’m a mad Springsteen fan, so I’ll be greedy and say Sherry Darling when I’m happy, Janey Don’t You Lose Heart when I’m down and Thunder Road any old time. What do you miss about the Sunshine Coast when you are not home? It doesn’t matter where I travel, I’m always so grateful to arrive home to what I consider the most beautiful place in the world. My family is all here, my friends are such great fun – and I love my work and my

BREWER’S DICTIONARY OF PHRASE & FABLE 20TH EDITION Edited by Susie Dent | Hodder | $100 This is a treasure hunt of a book! Brewer’s Phrase & Fable was first produced in 1870, and as editor Susie Dent states, “is unlike any other reference book that exists, anywhere.” To open this book is to embark on an adventure, but you must watch out for the rabbit holes, as this is a truly addictive pursuit. It features more than 1500 pages of language, culture and myth; a catalogue of curiosities and entertaining oddities. What is the origin of phrases such as, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” or “To let the cat out of the bag”? Where do the words “necking”, “doolally” and “gay” come from? Editor Susie Dent will be familiar to those who enjoy the UK TV shows Countdown and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. She also writes for the media and has one million followers on X (Twitter). Through editing, Susie has brought this text into the modern age. This is a fabulous addition to the thinking person’s library.

LOVE & PAIN Ben Gillies & Chris Joannou | Hachette | $45 SILVERCHAIR was born as the Innocent Criminals in a suburban garage in Newcastle, New South Wales, in the early 1990s. The three high school kids who formed this iconic band were Ben Gillies (drums), Chris Joannou (bass guitar) and Daniel Johns (vocals and guitar). There has been much written about Silverchair over the years, but this book is written by two of the three members of the band, who go back to the time before the band, sharing their influences, their challenges and their triumphs. They relate their years in the spotlight with unflinching honesty. As any musician will tell you, being in a busy, touring band is like being in a marriage but with more than one spouse. The dynamics can be complex and require careful navigation. In alternate chapters, Ben and Chris write candidly about the golden years of Silverchair, the exhilaration of success, and the minefield that comes with fame.

SUNSHINE & SONS PROMOTION

Locky Craven

MASTERING

the distill WORDS LUCINDA DEAN PHOTOS MEGAN GILL

FOR 25-YEAR-OLD local surf lifesaving patrol captain and rum distiller Locky Craven, life on the Sunny Coast is as sweet as molasses. In February 2022, the young UQ chemical engineering graduate landed his dream job as CAVU distiller at Sunshine & Sons/Nil Desperandum, a multi-award-winning boutique vodka, gin and rum distillery at Woombye. This local ‘disruptor’ caused quite a stir in the alcoholic spirits world when its rum label, Nil Desperandum, won gold at the 2023 Melbourne Royal Australian Distilled Spirits Award for its 1871 club release, The 44 Special (which was one of just six golds awarded in the competition). In fact, all nine Nil Desperandum rums entered in the awards left with a gong, earning this exciting Sunny Coast brand the title of the most awarded rum brand in Australia. They say a company is only as good as the people it keeps, which explains why Sunshine & Sons invests as heavily in its people as it does in product development. Its young protégé, Locky, made ripples internationally when in March this year he was awarded the inaugural Independent Stave Company (ISC) Young Distiller Fellowship. For the first time this year, ISC partnered with the Australian Distillers Association to create an annual award giving the successful candidate an all-expenses paid trip to Kentucky in the US. The fellowship included a tour of ISC Kentucky Cooperage, which is the maker of spirit barrels for many of the great US bourbon distillers; a tour of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Cooperage – suppliers of quality used bourbon barrels; a visit to select ISC 42

42.indd 1

distillery clients and a Spirit Barrel Oak 101 and tasting with ISC research and development director Andrew Wiehebrink. If, like me, you’re not familiar with the term cooperage, it’s the art of making barrels and casks. On the US trip, Locky was accompanied by 12 other movers and shakers in the Australian distillery industry. They started the tour in Chicago, travelling through Louisville, Kentucky and finishing in Lynchburg, Tennessee to visit numerous bourbon and whiskey distilleries. Locky says seeing the entire process at the ISC Kentucky Cooperage, from cutting down forest trees to making them into barrels, was “absolutely amazing”. “I had a day where I sat down with Andrew (Wiehebrink) and he told me how they charred barrels and used different types of oak to create different flavours and why,” says Locky. “Learning all that and applying some of that knowledge here has been a game changer.” Another takeaway from Kentucky is the understanding that barrels can be re-used. “I learnt from ISC that a barrel can be re-used three to four times, and that’s a barrel that has aged for eight-years each time.” According to Locky, Nil Desperandum often produces barrels, which are amazing. “We like to soak our barrels sometimes in port or sherry. Just making educated experiments gives us the chance to make rums that really stand out.” Locky’s favourite rum at present is Nil Desperandum’s latest release, a three-year-old called the Premier.

SALT

27/11/2023 10:04:02 AM

“It tastes great on its own, it packs a lot of flavour with really rich candied fruit coming through and typical crème brulee toffee notes.” The brand also does members’ rums, which are single cask picks. “When Adam and I are doing blends, we sometimes find barrels that are exceptional,” says Locky. “We save them for our members, and they’re some of the best rums in Australia. In my very biased opinion, they’re outstanding.” So what, in Locky’s opinion, makes Nil Desperandum so outstanding? “I think it’s the process that we put them through. CAVU head distiller Adam Chapman and I have a lot of education behind us, and it’s more Adam than me – I learn every day from him – but we feel we’re quite well educated about spirits. We experiment a lot and we find things that are weird sometimes, but in a good way.” Locky’s passion for distilling was awakened when he visited a brewery in his second year of chemical engineering. “Seeing how alcohol was made was just the most interesting thing in the world to me,” he tells salt. “Stumbling on distilling provided a lot of motivation for me to get me through my degree.” For Locky, landing a plum rum job on the Coast, where he grew up, was serendipity. The former Siena Catholic College student says having a chemical engineering degree under his belt is certainly advantageous, but equally important is his keen interest in distilling. The best aspect of the job, according to Locky, is producing something every day. Adam and Locky are responsible for getting the spirits all the way from molasses (for rums) and ethanol botanicals (for gins) to the bottle. “We do everything from monitoring the fermentation of all the distillations to looking after all the blending as well as maturation in the barrels.” Locky describes rum as “a completely complex spirit”. “It’s a really fun spirit; there’s a lot you can do to it. It can start from sugar cane juice, turning into a fresh, grassy, herbaceous spirit, or from molasses, developing flavours such as treacle, tropical fruits, even candied fruits.” The young award-winning distiller is also counting down to February 2024, which is the first time he gets to taste a two-year-old rum he made that’s of bottling quality. “Just being able to taste the first one (barrel) that I distilled with Adam is special.” Locky is also excited to see Nil Desperandum rums distributed far and wide. “It would be awesome to walk into a bar while I’m on holiday and see [Nil Desperandum] rum there and have the satisfaction of saying: ‘We made that’.” Fortunately, locals and visitors to the Sunny Coast only have to go as far as Woombye to taste test Sunshine & Sons exceptional gins and vodkas and outstanding Nil Desperandum rums.

THERE IS SOMETHING special about dewy mountain air in the summer. The warm breeze and the sweet scents of the rainforest stir you awake and instantly instil a sense of calmness. In fact, summer in the Sunshine Coast hinterland is a treat all around. The trees keep the temperature cool enough so you can wander comfortably for hours browsing the boutique shops, sampling the local produce or hiking the hinterland trails. There really is so much to explore, including one of my absolute favourite places, Kondalilla National Park. A great way to make the best of a trip up the mountain is to throw in a little getaway. And what better place to set up base than at Kondalilla Eco Resort? Set amongst 22 acres of Sunshine Coast rainforest and located at the entrance point to the national park, this resort provides the best vantage point for adventure-filled days at the beautiful waterfalls and relaxing nights where you will be sung to sleep by nature’s lullaby. Kondalilla Eco Resort sits around three kilometres north of the Montville township and only a 20-minute drive from Maleny, which means you have the best of both worlds at your fingertips – nature and community. The resort itself has 23 rooms and eight room types, all nestled within a rainforest setting, offering everything from secluded romantic getaways for couples to rustic family holidays among the trees. Spa haven cabins, the property’s newest addition, are the 44

ultimate in luxury and ooze romance. Designed just for couples, they are perched on a secluded hillside overlooking the Kondalilla National Park. These cabins feature a whirlpool spa bath, which comes in handy after a hike to the falls. To end the day, you can also whip up a delicious barbecue on your private deck. Add a cold glass of champagne and let the world drift on by in your private slice of paradise. For a special space to relax, revive and recharge, you will like the deluxe villa. This two-level open-plan cabin is set on the hillside and features a walk-in rainforest shower with access to the generous lower private deck, where you will find an outdoor seating area and deep bathtub.

If you’re after a more rustic experience, the beautiful pole-style treehouses are also designed for couples. Travelling with friends? The unique two-storey chalet overlooks the forest and is great for groups of up to four adults. Meanwhile, families will love the log cabins, which are perched hillside amongst the rainforest. They feature a deck and deep bath for a relaxing soak with a gorgeous window view. The lodge is another great and spacious open-plan two-storey option that sleeps up to six people, while the family rooms are ideal for up to four people. They include a lovely outdoor courtyard. Just wanting something simple? They have that, too – a duplex-style studio room, which offers a queen bed and small outdoor courtyard. Here’s a tip for your stay: be sure to add one of the resort’s delicious, local produce hampers to your booking. There are eight different types to choose from. If you prefer to dine out, you won’t have far to travel. Kondalilla Restaurant is located on site and is the perfect spot for a sunset dinner on the deck. Enjoy the tranquillity of bushland views and twinkling fairy lights above. The restaurant is quite the sight, too, featuring a large inside dining area, bar and private dining space for smaller events, candlelit tables and walls adorned with beautiful Indigenous art. Plus, there is even a small play area for the kids. Other resort features the kids will love include the onsite playground and the two pools and picnic areas around the property, which provide the perfect vantage point to spot the array of wildlife like wallabies, birds, lizards and more. For the adults, there is a sauna and several delights you can add to your stay, including holistic and spa treatments with a range of qualified practitioners. Finally, there is also a small on-site shop at reception for the essentials (like bubble bath, beer and wine). You can also borrow games, DVDs and books from here to ensure you experience the entire wholesome experience of Kondalilla Eco Resort.

Why not treat yourself to a mini staycation? Spend your days lazing in the inviting free-form swimming pool, pamper yourself in Stephanie’s Ocean Spa, or just take it easy. Summer wine Spill Wine is a delightful boutique wine shop and wine bar in Maleny. The snack menu is constantly evolving. This season, summery plates are paired with their beautiful wines. I’m also excited to share that Steve, Lee and the team at Yandina’s Catbird Restaurant at Fairhill Native Botanic Gardens and Nursery are now serving dinner on Saturday nights. First Nations chef Chris Jordan has joined with Catbird head chef Lucas Saeki to create an innovative menu of handmade dishes using local produce. Psst, we heard they are serving some unique, botanicalinfused cocktails too. Hooray to Nicole Hoffman, former owner of Mooloolaba’s Cafe Envy, who has just opened Banksia Espresso in Nambour. You’ll find specialty coffee, pastries, gluten-free cakes, salads and breakfast cups, plus a great range of local and Aussie gifts. I look forward to sharing more great stories on our artisan producers and Sunshine Coast foodies in future editions. Until next time, bon appetit!

SUMMER IS HERE. You can feel it in the warmth of the sun on your skin, sense it in the air, and you can certainly taste it in the fresh flavours dished up by head chef Graham Waddell and his team at Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort’s Relish restaurant. Crisp, local ingredients whipped into mouth-watering dishes that pop with the bright, bold colours of summer boast light, tasty flavours – you can all but feel them dancing on your tastebuds with each delicious mouthful. This is the vibe for the new seasonal menu at Relish. Originally from Scotland, Graham completed his training in England and has since worked in high-end restaurants across his homeland and throughout London. He has travelled the globe and cooked in some of the finest establishments, but luckily, he now calls the Sunshine Coast home and has done so for the past 16 years. “I came to Australia for a backpacking adventure in my twenties, met my wife Sarah. We now have three beautiful daughters and I couldn’t think of a better place to call home,” Graham says. And for the past two years, Graham has also called Relish home. “I love getting to use the beautiful fresh local produce we have here on the Coast, like the Noosa Reds tomatoes and local veg, and of course Mooloolaba prawns, which are always a crowd favourite. In fact, one of the most popular dishes on the menu, and one that doesn’t really change, is the Mooloolaba prawn sandwich and chunky fries,” he tells salt. “I would say the majority of our produce comes from farms around the Sunshine Coast, and we also have a herb garden on site. The older we chefs get, the more we appreciate mother nature’s amazing produce and the more we want to let that do the talking.” “As far as the menus go, I really like to cook on the hoof as we say, seldom repeating dishes.

“That’s what keeps cheffing exciting,” he says. “I’m not interested in overworked dishes either; here, produce is king. Food cooked simply to retain its natural character, and the warmer weather leans towards seafood dishes and grilled meats with summer salads, so that is what you’ll find a lot of on the new menu.” Some of the mouth-watering dishes on that menu include 54

Yucatan-style barramundi with avocado, melon, radish and charred lime; brined and charred Kingaroy pork cutlet with apple, celeriac, fennel, and jus gras; Lebanese salad of cucumber, haloumi, whipped feta, olive, melon and Noosa reds tomatoes with mint oil; Merguez-stuffed baby squid and king prawns, olives, peppers, and blood orange – delicious! And let’s not forget the yummy summer desserts, like a pavlova with mango, passionfruit and strawberries or ashed goat’s cheese, saffron pears, pain d’epices, fig relish and caramelised truffle honey. And although the food is what does the talking around here, the atmosphere lends itself to that breezy summer feeling. Have your meal dished up on the terrace under the palms as you look toward the golf course and beautifully manicured gardens. “It is like an oasis out there. The restaurant is relaxed. It almost feels like you’re on a holiday, a million miles away, but in reality, you are only three kilometres from Hastings Street in Noosa,” Graham says. For that reason, not only is Relish a favourite among guests and members, it’s also a popular choice for the locals. “There are many community groups and locals who come to use the fitness centre, do yoga, have a hit of tennis or use the spa who love to come and enjoy a meal or some morning tea after their session,” Graham says. “It really is a place for everyone to enjoy great food and a great environment.”

The restaurant is open to the public for breakfast and lunch daily, as well as morning tea and the popular traditional high teas, which are made in-house.

THERE’S A NEW kid on the block excitingly redefining the club experience. Opened in April this year, The Bower Tree is a daring and sophisticated departure from the typical Aussie club. Instead, The Bower Tree offers patrons privacy, safety and the comfort of an elegant environment. A bower tree symbolically is a meeting place, and that’s exactly what this multi-venue within a venue gathering place at Sippy Downs is. CEO Suzanne Long says management company The Boldbridge Group (Nambour RSL Club and The Bower Tree) wanted to create a space that is as vital as the emerging, young Sippy Downs community. The venue boasts four discrete food and beverage spaces: a pizzeria, Café Rubia, Arrows Bistro and Vine Wine Bar plus a separate gaming room. “Clubs are no different to any other business and need to think about where they’re headed into the future,” says Suzanne. “We didn’t use the name ‘community club’ as we wanted it to be a hospitality venue in a young and emerging town that caters for all demographics but still has the benefits of membership. “The wine bar was unique and different for clubs and we see it as the future. Not everyone likes to go to a club so the

wine bar was about somewhere where you could go that was a small, intimate space. You don’t have to sign in or be a member. There are minimal dress requirements that you often have to meet in a club.” Suzanne says people go to clubs for various reasons: for the food and beverage, to attend functions, to watch live sports or to gamble. Some people go to enjoy an air-conditioned space where they feel safe and welcome. “It was designed to achieve all that with indoor and outdoor spaces that can be used in all seasons.” This new-age community club’s whole ethos, even down to its external and interior design, is ‘less is more’; quality over quantity. Kon Panagopoulos of Brisbane’s KP Architects has subtly imparted his Greek heritage on this sleek and thoroughly modern space. The impressive rust-coloured façade, which reflects the surrounding pockets of bushland, was functionally about creating shade, protection and a breezeway for fresh airflow into the building. If you look around, you can see the European design influences from the exposed brickwork in the bistro to the travertine tiles and the vast use of natural stone. “It was about choosing natural products that would last a

lifetime, timeless elegance – and a lot of Greek properties do that, they don’t renovate extensively,” says Suzanne. On entering the premises, my husband and I were warmly greeted by staff and immediately it felt like we belonged. Signing up for a membership seemed like a great idea, which we did online – just $5.50 for a one-year membership (or pay $20 for five years). The Your Club Rewards program allows you to accumulate points by using your membership card throughout the venue. You can use your points to purchase meals and beverages, get cash rewards, buy event tickets, pay your membership fees and access other club privileges. Our epicurean day got off to a great start with breakfast at Café Rubia freshly prepared by head chef Matthew Smyth. We had the moreish Italian breakfast skillet – chorizo, roasted kipfler potatoes, baked capsicum, onion, roasted tomatoes, poached egg, mozzarella and herb garnish with a side of sourdough. As the day progressed, we grazed on several dishes from Arrows Bistro – each one hands-down delicious. We whetted our appetite with a Greek-inspired appetiser: crispy zucchini flowers with three-cheese filling (parmesan, feta and ricotta with onion and nutmeg) on top of a pumpkin puree. The filling is the same savoury deliciousness found in your traditional spanakopita. Yum! We then moved on to one of the bistro’s signature dishes: duck leg curry with fresh cherry tomatoes, green beans, steamed rice, pineapple pickle, coriander and cucumber yoghurt. Traditional Thai cuisine should be the perfect marriage of five flavours: salty, sour, sweet, spicy and creamy – and this dish certainly delivered on this vow. Executive chef Peter Brown says he only puts dishes on the

Waterfront D menu that he personally loves to cook and eat. Peter’s 33-year career started with an apprenticeship in Sydney at seafood restaurant Jordan’s and the French favourite, Bistro Papillon. He then honed his trade at five-star hotels where he says he: “learnt a lot from some really good chefs and won some awards”. “They taught me so much about what people expect when they come to a nice, high-quality venue and I’ve kept that philosophy no matter where I’ve worked, and I’ve worked in cafes, bistros, pubs and clubs. I always try to serve the best quality I can. This philosophy continues with Head Chef of Arrows Bistro, James Westbrook too.” Next, we dived right into the Mediterranean (culinarily speaking) and feasted on a funghi pizza, which had a nicely balanced topping of forest mushrooms, basil pesto, goats cheese, mozzarella, zucchini, sticky onion and chilli. The highlight of this yummy woodfired pizza was the balsamic onions and the piquant heat from the chilli. Peter says when he eats out he always tries to order something he wouldn’t make at home. So, I took a leaf out of Peter’s foodie philosophy book and did the same. I ordered the squid ink pasta, which was my personal favourite – the perfectly seasoned pan-seared king prawns were nicely offset by the buttery deliciousness of the squid ink pasta and just a slight hint of chilli. Got a wedding, private party or boardroom function coming up? The Bower Tree’s 220-bay basement car park has a lift that goes straight to the function room on level two. The décor is neutral, which is a great backdrop to any bride’s decorating palette, and the function space can cater for up to 220 guests banquette style or 350 guests cocktail style. There are also two separate meeting rooms, which can accommodate either 12 people or 24 with the dividing wall removed. The function space also has a terraced breakout area. Peter has a state-of-the-art kitchen directly behind the function area. He encourages you to talk to events manager Jack about creating bespoke functions. “We had a wedding here recently and I redesigned the whole menu. The bride wanted food served family style down the middle of the table – so we’re really flexible – can do anything within reason.” This venue sure is impressive and worth a visit.

MAGICAL MUDGEE WORDS STEVE LESZCZYNSKI

AS THE SHADOWS grow longer across the landscape at day’s end, I stand in what’s referred to as the ‘Bird’s Nest’, otherwise known as the epicentre of the Mudgee wine region. Peering around at the mountains that surround me, Mount Buckaroo lit up with an orange glow, it’s easy to understand how the nest came to be. Located 268 kilometres north-west of Sydney, the name Mudgee is derived from the Wiradjuri people who used the word ‘Moothi’, meaning ‘nest in the hills’. What makes the region ideal for producing quality wines is the diurnal shift, enabling cool nights to put the brakes on ripening, as well as maintaining good acidity and developing aromatic and fruit characteristics. Many people don’t realise the rich history of the Mudgee wine region, which sits 590 metres above sea level. The first vines in the district were planted way back in 1858 by those who swarmed the town in the gold rush era. Since then, Mudgee has grown to become New South Wales’ third largest wineproducing region, with more than 35 cellar doors and more than 40 varieties in its mostly volcanic earth and sandy loam soils. Of all wines tasted, shiraz was a consistent performer from a vast array of producers. With an array of attractions on offer year round, the town explodes with pride during September to showcase Mudgee Wine and Food Month as more than 15,000 people converge to embrace a vast array of local produce. Stay a little longer into October, and art lovers descend on Rosby’s not-for-profit Sculptures in the Garden event. Sip on a glass as you traverse the wonderful grounds filled with more than 300 exhibits, along with throngs of native birds passing through, adding to the vista and visual interest. One of the most consistent and best producers in the region is Huntington Estate. With a diverse range of wines to suit every 62

consumer, from sparkling whites to fortified and everything in between, kick back with the strawberries and cream delight of the pinot noir rosé 2023 or the energetic and juicy nouveau 2023 that sees the marriage of pinot noir, shiraz and grenache. Winemaker Tim Stevens is on a journey with grenache and his Special Reserve 2022 is flirtatious and vibrant. Winning! But cabernet is one of his loves – the Special Reserve 2018 features voluminous black fruits alongside generous and robust tannins ensuring this will live comfortably beyond a decade. one for the road to enjoy with pizza night. Mudgee is not typically known as a riesling hot spot but head to Robert Stein Winery and you’d think you were sipping on something from the Clare Valley. Wonderfully quartz driven, the refreshing purity of these rieslings, from their 1976 plantings, is simply outstanding. The Reserve 2022 possesses superb energy with a mineral-like core and the Estate Riesling 2023 is aromatically stunning. If some residual sugar is your thing, the half dry 2022 (15g/L) is perfect for Thai food. An outstanding trio without question, but if you need a red bathe in the delight of their new release Blü Hen Montepulciano 2022. Black Forest cake in a glass, this excellent drink is supple and silky. Robert Stein is also a brilliant lunch destination. With a paddock to plate focus and a full kitchen with a rolling menu, be sure to grab a truffle salami for the road – it’s divine! Heslop Wines offer a personalised experience at their tiny cellar door. With an incredible range of wines on offer, diversity is the beacon that shines. Think vermentino, white frontignac and sangiovese to mention a few, but the Mr Rascal 2022 Bush Botanical is the star. It’s a vermouth infused with Australian botanicals that screams aperitivo hour. Pour over ice with tonic and you have a handy refreshment. Love a small producer? A name to seek out is Lisa Bray. Having been awarded Mudgee’s Winemaker of the Year for the past two years, her LMB label captures the district in thrilling style. Her savoury and crunchy rosé 2023 and generous dark fruit and chocolate laden shiraz 2019 are humbly priced for the sheer quality in the glass. A cellar door with an incredible vista and contemporary appeal is First Ridge. Perched on the side of a hill overlooking the vineyards, the re-purposed shipping containers provide a unique tasting experience. Italian varieties are the focus and these wines are well made and incredibly approachable. Check out the fresh and vibrant vermentino 2022 and the dark berry basket and chocolate driven montepulciano 2022, but the Marco is a head turner. The 2021 is the first release and this blend of barbera and sangiovese is rich and generous with ribbons of spice – delicious. Head a little further up the road and drop into Skimstone’s rustic cellar door. Quite the find, winemaker Jean Francois is exceptionally passionate about his work. The textural and stone fruit-driven chardonnay 2021 was a standout along with the crunchy white cherry and raspberry highlights of the rosé 2023. The barbera 2021 had me thinking of duck ragu and the cabernet merlot 2021 is a much-needed cuddle for a cold night. But if a cleansing ale is what you seek after a day skipping around wineries, make a beeline to the slick and uber cute Small Batch Brewery and hop farm. Cleverly designed, these well-made brews with eyecatching labels make it an ideal location to slide into a comfortable chair as the day comes to a close. Very much a local favourite with eight tap beers on rotation, be sure to reach into the fridge for some takeaways. I’ll have a pilsner, thank you very much. THE MOHI HOUSEHOLD is a lively one. There is noise. There is chaos. There is also endless love. With two kids under the age of two, and a third baby on the way, Kassidy and Tane Mohi truly understand the definition of busy. And while their hands may be full, so too are their hearts. In October, the Sunshine Coast couple made the decision to forgo their overseas wedding, downsize and exchange vows in an intimate and last-minute ceremony. Their promise to each other? “To love these crazy kids and to give them a nurturing life,” says Kassidy, laughing above the toddler chatter in the background. The pair met five years ago through a mutual love of fitness. Kassidy, who was working at a Bli Bli gym as a personal trainer, says Tane piqued her interest the first time he walked through the gym’s door. When his profile coincidentally popped up on her online dating app a few days later - and was a match – she was pleased to learn he was single. Despite the mutual attraction, the relationship didn’t “work out” at that point in time. “His phone was broken so he said he would see me at the gym, but I didn’t see him for ages,” Kassidy recalls.

Kassidy Tane

“I thought he wasn’t keen, so I moved on and into a six-month relationship. When that didn’t work out, Tane and I became friendlier, and I asked him to come to a different gym with me to train. He came along one day and said he would do it every day. Ever since then, we’ve been gym buddies.” Three weeks into the relationship, Tane asked Kassidy to accompany him and his grandmother on a holiday back to his home country of New Zealand. She said yes, and so began their love story. In the four years since, the couple has bought two dogs, had two children and bought a house. Their third child is due in May. “We got engaged on September 9, 2022,” Kassidy says. “I forced him to buy me the ring,” she adds with a laugh. “We were selling my car because we were buying a new one, and I said, ‘With the money we get, you can buy me an engagement ring and propose to me whenever you want’.” Together, they hand-picked the pink sapphire and diamond stones and designed the ring alongside master jeweller Adrian Schulz of Buderim’s Diamonds of Distinction. Four weeks later, on a beautiful spring morning, Tane proposed at the beach with the couple’s eldest child, Arli, by his side. Kassidy and Tane married on October 29 this year – one month after choosing the date. “We never wanted a big wedding. We hate talking in front of people,” Kassidy says. “We planned to get married in New Zealand, but with the third on the way, we decided to do it here. The ceremony was held at The Lakehouse Folk in SALTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

We were meant to tell our parents we were pregnant on our wedding day Montville, a beautiful country-style haven featuring expansive lawns, a homestead and surrounding rainforest. There were six guests in attendance – the couple’s children and their parents. Kassidy, who has always loved horses and pretty country themes, was inspired by beautiful pink flowers. In keeping with the theme, she wore a pair of white cowgirl boots. “I like fun. We like horses and the country life. We just love the vibe. Plus, I don’t like wearing heels… I’m a mum. My friend lent me the boots, which was great.” In fact, Kassidy called on numerous acquaintances to help stage the wedding – she borrowed her dress, her florist friend created the arrangements and another friend did her hair and makeup. The couple found a photographer on Facebook who took the photos for free to grow her professional portfolio. 66

66.indd 1

The ceremony was short and sweet, filled with emotion. “I was nervous having to speak,” Kassidy recalls. “I don’t like being the centre of attention. We wrote our own vows. Tane was super emotional and crying lots, which was special to me as he never cries. “We were meant to tell our parents we were pregnant on our wedding day, but we failed miserably at that,” she adds. “They all left because the kids needed to go home. We told them the news a week later.” The newlyweds celebrated their nuptials with a private dinner. They plan to celebrate with friends and family at a large party in 2024. “We would love to do a honeymoon too, but someone is going to have three kids to look after,” Kassidy says with a laugh.

THE RINGS Tane and Kassidy selected a 1.55 Madagascan sapphire and a collection of smaller diamonds to complement the larger stone. The stones were set in a beautiful 18-carat rose gold band. The couple worked with Adrian Schulz of Diamonds of Distinction in Buderim to create Kassidy’s dream engagement ring. SALTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

THE VIBE IS airy and happy, sunny and colourful. It’s a little bit quirky and a lot retro. The Local at Peregian is like a cool breeze on a warm day, and the store is a space that has something for everyone and where everyone is welcome. It feels like a small-town beachy shop from days gone by: there is vinyl in the turntable and a surf and skate feel to the retro-esque items on offer. It replaced an old friendly grocer space that had been vacant for years and has kept that relaxed and laidback vibe, delivered with a smile. The Local, launched in autumn this year, is a curated collection of textile, musical and homeware treats, a quirky, happy sibling to the brick-and-mortar flagship Boom Shankar store on Hastings Street. Local fashion designer Dui Cameron is the driving force and founder behind both Boom Shankar and The Local. Dui is currently in India working on creating Boom Shankar’s next collection, which, like all of her creations, is sure to be a fun and colourful addition to The Local when it lands in-store. General manager Liv Mills says The Local has been warmly received and has quickly become part of the community’s fabric. “We know how much locals and visitors to Peregian like to shop in The Village,” Liv says. “Dui lives here and loves The Village – it has a natural hub and it was a natural fit for us. Our design and production offices are here. It is where our foundation and heartbeat sit.” Dui started Boom Shankar more than two decades ago with the intention of making clothes that were a riot of colour, felt good to wear and made the wearer happy. A strong ethical

foundation of responsibly sourced and created textiles, fair and supportive maker spaces and giving back to communities underpinned the brand from its genesis. The brand has come a long way from its start at local markets and, in the past few years has expanded its stockists around Australia. There are also international sellers in New Zealand, and this year, the company secured international distribution through Europe as well as Asia and the Pacific. The Local offered a chance for Boom Shankar to showcase its own garments but also offer a curated mix of bespoke products to fit the unique retro vibe. The focus is on quality

This is fashion. you are allowed to be bold and colourful; you can have a bit of fun and design, and the work of local homewares brands and artists is on display – from ceramics to tea, handmade candles, jewellery, skincare and body products. In terms of clothing, The Local sells a collection of other curated brands in addition to Boom Shankar designs. They were selected because they are fun, colourful, a little bit retro, a little bit classic, a lot here and now. Making its debut at The Local are shirts designed by Dui’s 20-year-old son Charlie Ciavarella, whose shirt brand Local Grind has proven to be an instant hit. Sold exclusively through The Local, he focuses on hero easy-wear shirts that reflect the surf, skate, relaxed culture that screams coastal living and unbridled fun. The launch of the label has surpassed all hopes and expectations, with some of the colours selling out within weeks. You are sure to see his face around, as he spends his days helping out at The Local, bringing his signature laidback vibes to the store. Charlie is planning four new season releases each year. 92

Liv says The Local has proven a perfect addition to the Boom family, adding another joyful space for Boom’s passionate Sunshine Coast customers as well as drawing in holidaymakers. Liv says online and brick-and-mortar shops complement each other. “For example, a southern visitor might come into the Hastings Street shop or The Local, see the brand presented as envisaged by the creator as a wholistic collection, and then become a loyal customer. This is a familiar story,” she says. “The coordinating stories are important and Dui has always been very clever to ensure any new delivery in a season will work back with items from the start of the season or seasons past. It’s all intertwined and retains the signature from last season. It goes to our core values of sustainability and quality. “But there is a timelessness about well-designed garments made from quality fabrics, particularly those such as Boom that are designed to ride the waves of change.” This year, the company has implemented new fabrications

and the new season style is a little more dressed up, a touch more sophisticated – a dress that might be right at home at a long lunch on Hastings Street or in Peregian’s The Village. There is also a loyal following among those who love the lightweight cotton, bright-coloured dresses that are designed to be worn in the every day. Boom Shankar is a medium-sized business now. There are 27 staff, there is a strategy informed by a skilled, experienced team about how to move to the next steps regarding international distribution and growth. The company was represented for the first time at a fashion trade fair in London in February and was received positively and warmly. “What we learned was that we do not need to change to meet the market: we have a market,” Liv says. “We have the right parts of it coming to us. That is hugely heartening, and all this has enabled Dui to focus on design and creativity and let those who work with her take care of the rest. “Dui is the first to say that she doesn’t take herself too seriously, that this is fashion. You are allowed to be bold and colourful; you can have a bit of fun and play dress-ups.” From its inception, Boom was built on a foundation of

ethics, community and giving back. Dui’s delight in the recent growth and development of the business is partly driven by the broadened capacity to invest in the communities and projects here and in India. By way of example, as of March 2023, Boom Shankar has donated almost $64,400 to support the work of Forget Me Not Australia, a charity organisation that rescues children trafficked into orphanages for profit in India, Nepal and Uganda. Boom’s donations have helped reunite more than 700 children with their families. Near or far, Boom’s focus has been on helping people live a big, bold, beautiful life. By design, The Local is a local point of connection, a warm and friendly place to be, a cool and positive location. In the Boom Shankar family, The Local fits in just fine. boomshankar.com.au SALTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

PALM SPRINGS. THE home of cacti, agaves and luxe landscaping that complements the clean lines and geometric shapes of modernist architecture (white façade and breeze blocks, anyone?). It is an oasis, not unlike our own piece of paradise here on the Sunshine Coast – sans the coastline, of course. This is why it makes perfect sense that the creators of this gorgeous coastal home were inspired by the design principles that have appealed to architects and designers since the mid-1900s – with a contemporary twist, of course. Nestled in Bells Creek, this display home is the creation of Coast Life Homes and is a testament to thoughtful design and innovative touches. You could almost say it is redefining the quintessential coastal property. The brief was simple: to design a display home that reflected the Sunshine Coast lifestyle. Located on a 392-square metre block, the home had to be functional, practical and provide stylish street-appeal. The target clientele? Second or third homeowners and those seeking luxury in a modern, downsized space. The team hit the mark – the home, entitled ‘Malibu with Palm Springs Façade’, won the Innovation in Materials and Products category at the 2023 HIA Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay Housing Awards. The design, open spaces and integration with the outdoors define the architectural aesthetic. With high ceilings, a mudroom, two living areas, four bedrooms and an inground pool, every aspect meets the brief. The home integrates a 6.6kW solar system, fully ducted and zoned air-conditioning and a 6.8-star energy-efficiency rating, aligning with Coast Life Homes’ commitment to sustainability. “The design was a collaboration between Coast Life Homes

and DraftRoom building designers,” explains managing director Russel Kay. “[What] is appealing to clients is the sustainable building materials, drought-tolerant gardens, solar system and energy-efficient appliances. These are all items that we can include in client homes to create more sustainable and energy-efficient homes into the future.” Architecturally, the most striking material used in this project is the breeze blocks, a product that has made a comeback, securing its place amongst contemporary design. SALTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

101.indd 1

101

Not only do they look good, but breeze blocks provide a subtle divide between spaces while allowing for natural ventilation and light. The blocks were honed (ground to a smooth finish) to provide a modern, polished look and feel. The driveway was also honed to bring out the colour of the stone, while the entry and front path were created using sustainable Millboard Decking composite material, which has the look and feel of traditional timber. Natural grass inserts in the driveway soften the look of the concrete and bring a fresh feel to the overall exterior of the home. The compact yet functional and stylish swimming pool is constructed from concrete with a fresh white pebble interior. The coping is consistent with the tiles used on the rear alfresco patio, creating a clean transition from the outdoor dining space to the pool area. The decking around the pool is built using the same Millboard product. Frameless glass fencing provides a 102

102.indd 1

seamless finish. When combined, these elements achieve that sought-after coastal-Palm Springs vibe. “The home has a distinct look and feel, from the front façade through the home to the large internal stacker doors leading to the pool area with its palm trees and crushed sandstone gardens,” Russel says. The theme extends into the interior of the home through carefully selected furniture and fittings. The interior itself features an open-plan living and dining area, which opens out onto the alfresco area and deck. Quality workmanship and on-trend features demonstrate Coast Life Homes’ commitment to delivering homes that resonate with the current market. “The interior was designed by Jane Kay and includes the use of VJ board feature walls to the mud room and master suite, higher ceilings and brushed gold door furniture,” Russel says. “The bathroom has many unique qualities including a curved mirror, gold taps and accessories, a freestanding bath and floor-to-ceiling tiling.” The ensuite is also well-appointed with a walk-in shower with full-length shelf wall, twin under-mount basins, separate water closet and full-height tiling throughout.” The ensuite and main bathroom feature beautifully marbled natural quartz Statuario benchtops and classic oak cabinetry. The theme continues into the kitchen, which has been designed with sleek Laminex Polar White cabinetry, classic oak accents, quartz Statuario benchtops and brushed gold Mizu tapware. VJ lining board was used under the breakfast bar, while the Ferrara brushed gold cabinetry handles offer a subtle but practical addition to the cabinetry doors. In essence, this property is a manifestation of the Sunshine Coast lifestyle. It is the ideal combination of practicality, sustainability and luxury.

TOTAL CURTAIN SOLUTIONS PROMOTION

QUALITY & STYLE WORDS LINDA READ PHOTOS MEGAN GILL

CHOOSING THE RIGHT window treatment can be a tricky business. An eye-catching brightly coloured block curtain, a softly draped linen sheer or a perfectly pleated Roman? The right – or wrong – choice can make or break a room. That’s where Trish Shipp, owner of Total Curtain Solutions, comes in. Trish has been designing, measuring and making curtains for more than 30 years, so it’s fair to say there’s not much she doesn’t know about making windows look perfect. And it’s not just curtains and blinds that Trish can create – she also does plantation shutters, as well as covers for outdoor furniture and light upholstery. Some of the Sunshine Coast’s most glamorous homes showcase her work, with her business servicing the area from Gympie to Caloundra. Trish also travels further afield when the need arises, having recently finished fitting out the window furnishings for a resort in Byron Bay. She has also done several houses in Brisbane and completed soft furnishing treatments for several Surf Life Saving prize homes. In an era where mass production and ready-made products are commonplace, Trish prides herself on oldschool standards of high quality, attention to detail and outstanding personal service. Based at Cooroy, Total Curtain Solutions boasts a well-stocked showroom and an adjoining new, purpose-built, 180-square metre workshop. Trish’s state-of-the-art van acts as her mobile showroom, fully stocked with fabric, blinds and shutter samples to show clients when she visits their homes. “Our point of difference is that quality workmanship,” Trish tells salt. “We actually make everything in our own workroom – we make it personally ourselves. “I go out and do all the measuring and quoting, and then we make it ourselves and install it ourselves. Everything’s done 104

104.indd 1

by us, so we can control the quality. “I’ve been doing this since I was 19. I still do things the old-fashioned way. “None of my curtains have got raw edges on them, whereas at most curtain warehouses now, everything’s overlocked. All mine are turned under. All the stiffening tapes are hidden, so you don’t see a stiffening tape at the top, and things like that. It’s all done properly. “When I go and do measures and quotes, I take samples with me to show them the finishes.” While Trish may believe in old-fashioned standards of workmanship, she’s right on trend when it comes to the latest designs and styles. “I’ve got a really extensive fabric range, which I’m building on all the time, and keeping up to date with them,” she tells salt. “We’re getting quite a lot of recycled fabrics coming through as well, so there’s quite a lot of fabrics that have been made out of recycled plastic. They’re higher-end fabrics, but for people that are interested, it is starting to happen a lot more. “The industry’s always changing and updating.” As for current trends, Trish says s-fold (also known as wave or ripple) curtains are big, as are sheers, linen and linen blend fabrics. Greys are out, and colours are in, sometimes in a bold statement. “A lot more people are doing feature curtains, particularly if they’ve got one room they want to highlight,” she tells salt. “Then in that one room they go for something that’s more expensive and make it a feature. “We’re very proud of the quality and the work we do; we back everything we put out.”

IT HAPPENS IN a heartbeat: a striking, magic moment when nature’s light shifts and the colours deepen and sharpen. They are instances so stunning they might leave a viewer dumbstruck by the beauty. But while others stop and stare, it is at moments like these that artist Natasha Ruschka swings into action, feverishly trying to catch the flash with her brush – focusing so much that no sound or distraction can penetrate her concentration or break the spell. Natasha paints en plein air – live and outdoors, in the moment and on the scene. It was a move to the United States for her husband’s work that introduced Natasha to painting through a vibrant art community in Denver. She had juggled work as a corporate executive assistant before the move, and while she still had to balance home, children and tricky times of day, she discovered a passion first for textured, colourful still life. Then, as she found more time, she answered the call of the wild and took her brush and easel outdoors. It was a bold, important move as an artist to expand her repertoire and to move from inside to out. “Art is a journey and I really want to keep learning,” she says. “If I get too comfortable in a certain subject, I will start looking around for new inspiration. I am always trying to push myself and expand. “I have painted with watercolour and acrylic and gouache, and out of all the mediums, oil is the most beautiful. The way it bounces around in that linseed oil, the saturation is just perfection. I think that is why I come back to it.” While she was the daughter of an artist and has played all her life with creativity and colour, Natasha has worked as an artist full-time for seven years. Her en plein air works are created in a wet-on-wet style – alla prima – that is fresh, loose and alive. “It is more about capturing an essence and not trying to blend away your brushstrokes but allowing them to be part of the work at the end,” Natasha says. “I am never trying to over-describe an image by outlining and then colouring it in. I am always trying to make shapes with my brush, and the least number of brushstrokes I can use to create an impression of that shape, the more satisfied I feel.”

While i am painting outside, i am so present. when i look at that painting later, i can still recall in detail what i smelt or what I heard

And being outdoors in the wonders of nature combines so many of the elements that make this Brisbane-based artist feel invigorated. “While I am painting outside, I am so present,” she says. “I can walk away after painting for an hour, and when I look at that painting later, I can still recall in detail what I smelt or what I heard. I take so much away with me. It is such an incredible meditation in that moment. That is so hard to get, particularly in today’s world. “I switch into this mode where I don’t actually see the painting: I follow my process of interpretation. It can be a bit dangerous because I block out everything. I have to be sure I am safe because I am unaware of what is behind or around me. 118

118.indd 1

“You have to work so quickly because the light changes so fast. You really cannot be thinking about who is behind you or what is for dinner, you have to be absolutely there, painting that.” Like most en plein air artists, Natasha almost always finishes a work in a session. When she works outside, she mixes colours and uses rapid brushstrokes to capture the colour, light and tone present in that moment. She paints small, not paying too much attention to the fine details – she photographs a scene too and can get the minutia from that for larger pieces created later in the studio. “A photograph cannot capture the colours and temperature of an outdoor scene – not really,” Natasha says.

“In a photograph, the shadows tend to be black instead of having deep, rich colours and the sun can bleach out highlights so you can’t really see what is there. I think when you look at something in life, you capture complexity even when you look into shadows. I recently was at the beach and the shadows on the rocks threw dark blue tones. You just won’t see that when you look at a photograph.” Natasha says her process in starting an artwork is effectively problem-solving: she looks at a scene and starts to unpack it into its elements and consider how to communicate them. In the same way, her mixing of colours to achieve the right tone is as clinical as it is pleasurable for her. “I am a big believer in the process that hangs behind the art and from very early on I have tried not to be attached to the outcome, because from when you first start painting you learn that the outcome might not meet an expectation,” she says. “If you think of the end result all the time, you may never start. You don’t go to the gym for the first time and expect to come out with a six-pack.” Teaching technique and mentoring those who dip their toe

into artistic waters is also important to Natasha. She has online, anytime courses on her website and regularly runs workshops and live classes. “When I was learning to paint, I was so worried about outcome and I see that in those I teach,” she says. “It can be paralysing, if you worry about it not working out as you want it to. I had to do a lot of mental work when I began to paint – paint every day for a month and do not look at the outcome and just follow the process. I know the feeling that you don’t think you can do it. But once I had begun to produce paintings that I was pleased with I wanted to pass on what I had learnt. It is a wonderful thing to watch someone gain the confidence to just paint, to enjoy the practice.” Natasha is rarely uninspired. “Every day I see something I get excited about,” she says. “Every day I see something I want to paint.”

SPANISH SCULPTOR MIREIA Serra may live and work a world away from the Sunshine Coast’s sparkling shores, but her work deeply resonates with the ocean city. That is precisely why her stunning wall and miniature bronze sculptures fit so perfectly at Noosa’s The G Contemporary, the Hastings Street gallery renowned for its diverse representation of local, national and international contemporary artists. Mireia is from Barcelona, Spain – a city famous for art and architecture, food and football. But her intricately detailed sculptures speak of the ocean; whales, divers, and surfers are some of the characters that feature in her work and reflect her own deep connection with the sea. The G Contemporary owners Karen and Steve Beardsley discovered Mireia’s sculptures, which are featured in galleries in Europe, Asia and the United States, at an art fair in Hong Kong. They were instantly drawn to them. The feeling was mutual, as Mireia explains. “My interest in finding a gallery in Australia aligned with the fact that my works with marine themes, such as whales, divers and surfers, were being acquired by collectors in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore,” she tells salt. “I believe our artistic connection, though remote, is based on a shared love for the coast and the ocean and a

mutual desire to transcend geographical borders.” Karen explains that it is important for the gallery to represent an eclectic collection of artists, as it connects to a wide national and international audience. “The crucial elements of any artist we represent are that we connect with the work ourselves; the work needs to be of the highest standard; we need to be able to work well with the artist; and the art needs to be commercially viable. “Working with Mireia ticks all these boxes.

“She is one of our top-selling artists and is consistently producing new work.” Mireia’s sculptures are meticulously detailed works of bronze and iron, featuring human figures, whales, maps, books and globes. Some are freestanding, and some are created to hang on a wall. According to Karen, Mireia’s eye for detail is what makes her work so compelling. “All her pieces have incredible body language, which can evoke an emotion easily,” Karen tells salt. “And, they are beautifully and professionally assembled to produce a narrative the viewer can interpret in their own way. We almost always have a wall of her work available, as it definitely attracts clients into the gallery.” “People love the little figures together with little items like books, record players and cameras. “There are the tiny details that you often can’t see until

122

122.indd 1

you are up close.” One example of such a detail is the map coordinates that are etched into some of the whale sculptures, which signify its journey – always beginning with the coordinates of Barcelona, of course, where the journey begins. Mireia has even been commissioned, Karen says, by people to incorporate the personal and relevant coordinates of their own life journey into certain pieces. Never short of ideas for new work, Mireia says she finds inspiration in the everyday observances of the world around her. “I rest, absorb energy and have new experiences,” she tells salt. “I observe people, read, travel and get to know places and people. “Many of the characters in my sculptures are shown doing these things, so if you want to understand how I get inspiration, you just need to closely examine some of my

SALT

sculptures. All of this recharges my energy and ideas, which I then channel into long hours of work in the studio.” She explains that her work focuses on reflecting life through small moments. “I believe that happiness is composed of these vital moments. I develop everyday themes of relaxation and wellbeing, often with characters accompanied by iconic objects such as books, maps, cameras and globes. “I use whales as a symbol of the journey, both physical and emotional. The sea, its colour and its light are important sources of inspiration for me. “Additionally, I address topics related to the protection of the Earth and endangered species.” Mireia begins the creative process by sculpting characters and objects in sculptor’s wax and creating silicone moulds of them. Then, in the foundry, she transforms the figures into bronze and builds scenes to go with them. “Each piece is like a frame from a movie, where the choice of each element is crucial to convey my message and connect with the viewer,” she says. “For my wall sculptures, I use geometric structures of iron, such as bars, squares and surfaces of bronze and brass. “Finally, I apply coloured patinas; and the title of the work plays an important role, as it provides clues and

summarises the idea.” Mireia had dreamt of becoming a sculptor since childhood, when she first shaped clay at school. The experience, she says, “deeply marked” her. She studied fashion, however, and worked in the fashion industry before finally returning to her dream. She became a graduate of the Llotja School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona, specialising in iron and bronze sculpture. Mireia has no regrets about her foray into the fashion world; in fact, she believes it actually enhanced her overall artistic journey. “It gave me discipline and the ability to incorporate elaborate details into my bronze sculptures, making my work unique and recognisable,” she says.
