Editor’s letter Welcome to our Christmas issue!

I think it’s fair to say, that this has been a year like no other. And it looks like Christmas is going to be rather different too. At this moment in time, we’re not sure if we can enjoy the usual festivities with our family and friends or if we have to postpone family gatherings until who knows when in 2021. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy Christmas. If anything, we need to make it extra special with or (most unfortunately) without family and friends.

The Queen once referred to 1992 as an ‘annus horribilis’, a Latin phrase meaning ‘horrible year’. Well, I reckon 2020 will go down in history as an ‘annus horribilis’ for the world as a whole.

I’ve been busy compiling our ultimate Gift Guide (page 21) to help you choose the perfect present for your loved ones, so grab a mug or glass of whatever you fancy and tick off your Christmas gift list. There’s also lots to read and some fabulous competitions too, so make sure you enter.

Of course, our annual Christmas Charity Ball was cancelled, along with all of our other events. This meant our chosen charities suffered; fingers crossed, as we move into the new year, we will be able to share lots of our 2021 events with you. This has been a challenging year for business, so thank you to all of our clients old and new for your support. These are tough times and lots of small local businesses won’t survive, so try and shop/eat/stay local whenever you can. I’m sure many of us didn’t know what was actually on our doorstep until lockdown happened!

Have yourselves a very merry Christmas, keep yourselves and those around you safe, and we will all come back bigger and stronger next year. Take care,

Beverley x

Tune into local band’s uplifting NHS tribute

Why not have a watch and listen to local band Jon Vivant for a much-needed lift this Christmas? Their track December was originally released back in 2014 and was played on Radio 2. After revisiting it recently, the band realised just how much the lyrics resonate with the times we are currently living in. The song was written about the nursing staff of the NHS and their enduring spirit and commitment to caring for others. The band says that if it can give a bit of pleasure and lift a few spirits, they will be really happy. Every donation goes straight to filling the toy sacks. “As individuals, how many of us spend £25 on something that we don’t even give a second thought to? And now we can’t go to the pub or a restaurant, we could all afford to give £25 to The Toy Appeal and really make a difference to a child at Christmas and beyond.” Of Stocktons’ support, Dee Drake says: “Having such well known Manchester institutions like Stocktons donating both time and money to The Toy Appeal is fantastic. It really raises our profile across the region with other businesses.

Kit Stockton from family-run designer furniture retailer Stocktons, based in Ancoats, is appealing to fellow businesses to support local charity The Toy Appeal and help raise £70,000. This year, more than ever, the prospect of no presents to open at Christmas is a stark reality for an increasing number of children across Greater Manchester and Cheshire. And with all fundraising events in 2020 having to be cancelled, The Toy Appeal is relying on funds, rather than toy donations, because of coronavirus. For seven years, The Toy Appeal founders, Cheshire couple Dee and Chris Drake, have raised funds to bring some of the region’s most deprived children Christmas joy with a toy sack just for them. Each sack has eight toys specific to the child’s age and costs the charity around £25. This year, The Toy Appeal is hoping to deliver over 6,000 toy sacks across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

“This year, it’s been tough, but we are determined to deliver over 6,000 toy At just eight years old, she decided to set sacks to children across our region, up a stall near our home in Altrincham, who otherwise would have nothing at selling some of her toys and homemade Christmas. Stocktons has been supporting the charity in various ways ever since. It has provided volunteers, including Kit, to pack the toy sacks along with supplying vans and drivers to deliver. They have also encouraged suppliers, customers and contacts to support the cause. Many have made use of their contacts and purchasing power to buy toy goods at cost and donated them. Others have provided much-needed storage facilities, where the toys can be stored throughout the year.

Kit adds: “Dee and Chris Drake are an inspiration. They strive all year round Kit Stockton says: “I first heard about The to make sure that these children get Toy Appeal through my daughter Molly. something at Christmas. They live and 10

Didsbury community champion to be honoured with a coveted British Citizen Award

Arriving in the UK from Malaysia at just 18, Bee Bee enrolled herself in nursing college and has continued to work in the public sector until retirement, becoming a teacher and, later, a school inspector. Bee Bee has always embodied helping others as part of her professional and personal life. After retirement, 25 years ago, Bee Bee started volunteering weekly at the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). This continued until recently when CAB moved to telephone-only services. Rather than resting on her laurels, Bee Bee undertook other volunteering roles, spending many hours each week on volunteering and charitable commitments, going out in all weathers despite being nearly 85 years old and having limited mobility herself.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, 26 extraordinary people from across the UK are being recognised with the coveted British Citizen Award (BCA). One of them is Bee Bee Waldon from Didsbury. Due to the current government restrictions banning large gatherings indoors, the usual grand medal presentation ceremony at the Palace of Westminster is unable to take place. For the first time in its history, Bee Bee and the remaining 25 medallists will receive their BCA medals by courier, together with a video message from some of the patrons and an invitation to the House of Lords at a date yet to be determined.

Volunteering at the CAB, Bee Bee specifically supported those with debt problems and in crisis, helping them to get back on track and facilitating their return to a functioning role in society. This included the most vulnerable in the local community – refugees, disabled people and those with mental health conditions. For many years, Bee Bee was also chairman of the Didsbury Festival Committee, helping to organise annual events; bringing the community together for a fun family day. Bee Bee also volunteers at the Friends of Fletcher Moss and Parsonage Gardens, happy to undertake clearing up and sweeping as well as providing baked goods and hot drinks at her own expense. She has undertaken this role for over 10 years, since the group’s inception, and she enjoys ensuring the upkeep of a historically valuable green space, which people in the community can enjoy. Bee Bee’s most recent volunteering role is with not-for-profit Assist, which provides support for the elderly and socially isolated in the community and is reliant on volunteers.

George Galway December 1940 – October 2020 Flute, Saxophone, Clarinet – A tribute by Peter Johnson When asked why he played jazz rather than classical music like his brother, Fog Lane resident George Galway would reply, “because I don’t like crowds!” This belied his superb musicianship in both genres but demonstrated his humility and wit much beloved by audiences and fellow players. In fact, he did play classical music and frequently gave recitals, often from memory, but it was in jazz that he truly made his mark. George had a great musical ear, which allowed him to play most tunes without recourse to the written music and he explained that growing up in a musical family in Belfast, his mum used to tell

him the first note and key, and from there he could work it all out himself. George played throughout the UK and Ireland in clubs and festivals with top bands, including The Melotones and Ken Dodd Orchestra, and jazz greats, such as Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison and Humphrey Lyttleton. He said that his career highlight was a Benny Goodman tribute at the Barbican with Bob Wilber. When I returned to playing 25 years ago after a long layoff, I consulted one of the greats on the jazz scene Tommy Whittle for advice, who simply said, “Go speak to George Galway!"

George lived in Belfield Road in 1967-68 and returned in 1977 to settle in Didsbury, buying a house on Fog Lane. His two sons attended Beaver Road Junior and Parrs Wood High. His wife Muriel passed away in 2010.

George was a much-loved and respected teacher, in schools and privately, and hundreds of children enjoyed his tuition – many of whom grew up and sent their

Andrew Shevlin thatgingerguy.co.uk Certified Nutritionist, Personal Trainer and Online Health Coach I support you to find a diet that suits your life and not the other way around; a diet where you don’t need to sacrifice your favourite foods and social occasions because “I’m on a diet”. Using evidence-based practice, empathy, communication and education, I want to teach you to take control of your diet and, in turn, take back control of your life. For too long, we have demonised foods, categorising them as good or bad. People have an all-or-nothing approach to dieting, which leads to that inevitable Monday morning when they have to start all over again. With me, that Monday morning doesn’t exist. So, what makes me different? I don’t use a ‘one-size-fits-all approach’ and I never will. When you come to work with me, our first step will be to do a full consultation and assessment of your diet and lifestyle. I want to build a clear understanding of you and your life and create something that is going to best suit both. We will then work together to create an individualised nutrition plan and a tailored exercise program to give you clear guidance through every week. Working with me means seven-day support via email and messaging as well as us having an indepth check-in once a week. This is in addition to recipe books, exercise videos and tutorials, a support group with other like-minded individuals and, most importantly, education. I run regular webinars that will teach you the science and theory behind what you are working on, so that you become empowered to take control of your own diet and activity for good and without the need to start again every Monday. My dream for every client is to get them to a weight they are happy with, teach them how to live at that weight mindfully, find exercise they enjoy and be happy. What I do works.

Riz Ahmed and The Long Goodbye The music artist, storyteller, actor and activist will perform an exclusive online live edition of The Long Goodbye this December. Developed especially for the digital realm and presented in binaural sound, the online performance is a companion piece to the live stage show commissioned by Manchester International Festival (MIF) and Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), originally due to premiere in Manchester in March 2020 before Covid-19 led to its postponement until 2021. Following on from his acclaimed recent album, The Long Goodbye – a close-up look at the breakup of a toxic relationship with the country you call home – Riz Ahmed’s livestreamed performance will blend storytelling, music, archive footage and immersive sound to guide audiences through an emotional landscape. Unravelling the album tracks, it tells the story of this moment through a personal journey and asks: ‘how did we get here?’ It is performed by Ahmed and directed by writer and director Kirsty Housley (Tao of Glass, MIF19), with creative direction from Andrea Gelardin and sound design from Gareth Fry. Riz Ahmed stepped into the spotlight as the first South Asian actor to win an acting Emmy for his lead role in HBO’s The Night Of. Cooking Christmas with Julie Neville It really is the most wonderful time of the year and no one loves Christmas more than I do. Christmas carols are playing in the Neville house daily from the beginning of November (much to my husbands dismay) and I was actually writing my Christmas recipes this year at the start of October! So, with this year being slightly different due to the lockdown – no Christmas markets, more time spent at home, less inclined to go to busy shopping centres when they are open and people trying to work to a tighter budget – my recipes are all about edible gifts, Christmas treats to make at home with the children, alternatives to the usual time-consuming and expensive Christmas cakes, and generally lots of fun and delicious foods. The recipe below looks incredible on a festive plate in the centre of the table and the truffles are fantastic boxed up as a homemade gift.

CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES Serves 20

Preparation time: 20 minutes plus chilling Ingredients: 300ml double cream 300g dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces 50g unsalted butter Method: Place the butter and cream in a saucepan and heat until the butter has melted and bubbles are starting to form around the edges of the mixture.

Remove from the heat and pour over the chocolate. Leave for a few minutes, then stir until you have a smooth, glossy mixture.

If you are coating your truffles, then do it at this stage. Dessicated coconut, cocoa powder, chopped nuts and chocolate sprinkles all work really well.

If you are adding flavours, then separate into bowls and add in your flavours at this stage. Liquors work well, as does peppermint or orange extract, orange zest or almond extract. When using extracts, less is more, as they can be really potent. Once you have incorporated your flavours, chill for several hours until set – minimum of four hours.

If you want to dip your truffles in melted chocolate, then chill them again before you do this. Keep in the fridge for a maximum of three to four days.

Once set, line a baking tray with parchment and oil your hands. Using either a melon baller or ice-cream scoop, take scoops of the mixture and roll into balls between your hands, then place onto the baking sheet.

All my other Christmas recipes are available on my instagram page @homecookingwithjulieneville and my website homecookingwithjulie.com December/January 2021 | salutions.co.uk

Festive florals We believe that, despite how hard things have been in 2020, Christmas should be just as sparkly, twinkly, festive and cheerful as it has ever been, if not more so! Which is why, this year, we're going bigger and better than we've ever gone before... decking the halls with wild abandonment, throwing some sparkle at everything and spreading joy with festive florals! So, we’re sharing our top tips to help inspire the fancification of your home this season.

We’ve also taken our festive bouquets to the next level this year, with designs in stunning wintery and frosty colours and traditional golds and reds – each using masses of flowers, foliage and berries to create abundant, festive bouquets. The perfect festive flourish to a hallway or kitchen table.

GO BIG WITH GARLANDS If ever there was a year to indulge to make yourself feel better, 2020 is it. A fresh garland floats festive scent all around your home. Garlands added to staircases, mantlepieces, tables or above doorways are a luxurious touch to your Christmas decorations and add real WOW factor.

DECORATE FROM TOP TO TAIL When we talk about decking the halls with wild abandonment, we mean every hall, every room and every forgotten corner. Our Seasonal Posy Jars are perfect for adding a finishing touch to Christmas dinner tables or dotted around your home to add a festive touch. These jars also make fabulous gifts and Christmas tokens. TWINkLE, TWINkLE I don’t think there is anything as cosy, festive or beautiful as winter flowers and foliage under the twinkle and sparkle of candlelight.

SPREADING CHEER FOR ALL TO HEAR If there’s one thing 2020 has taught us, it’s the importance of friends, family, community and neighbours. So, don’t keep all the sparkle to yourself.

Our beautiful, floral candle arrangements feature gorgeous wintery flowers nestled between lush foliage, like eucalyptus and pine, and are a real showstopper for your Christmas table.

We have some charming Christmas plants, thoughtful gifts and festive blooms, which are ideal for showing your appreciation or lifting someone’s spirits.

To win your very own All is Bright candle arrangement see page 40 My online shop is bursting with fresh flowers, seasonal foliage, dried florals and gorgeous gifts – all available for local contactless delivery or click/call and collect, with some eligible for national delivery too.

The rise of preloved designer style From investing in exquisite items that have never been worn to enjoying sustainable, greener shopping, there are many reasons to purchase preloved designer bags, shoes, clothing and accessories brand, authentic preloved bags, shoes, clothing and accessories.

The benefits of buying preloved clothing

“Customers can visit our private studio by appointment, but our idea was really to utilise social media platforms and to sell everything via our website, nationally and internationally,” she adds.

There are many advantages to buying and selling preloved designer items, stresses Michelle:

How does buying and selling preloved clothing work? Atelier Cheshire’s approach is collaborative: Michelle and Rebeka work with customers to find the right price. Pieces are authenticated via proof of purchase, certification, packaging or labelling. They are then styled, modelled, photographed and videoed, so that the shopper can imagine how they might Michelle Payne and Rebeka Peacock have just launched Atelier Cheshire with wear them. the aim of helping fashion lovers buy and sell unique, collectable and valuable “We work with superbrands, such as Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton, through designer items. to supercool high-street brands, such as Rixo and Sandro,” explains Rebeka. “During the first lockdown, like many “Prices depend on whether the item is others, I cleared out my wardrobe,” vintage, a collectors’ piece, new season Michelle explains. etc., as well as condition.” “I found I had designer shoes and bags Atelier keep their overheads low to ensure I wanted to sell but could not find the they can maximise the percentage of right place to do so. I started to think sales price they give to the seller and give there might be an opportunity to do their customers the best value for money. something myself.” Designer clothing online Michelle, whose background is in marketing, decided to team up with Rebeka, who ran a promotions business, to launch Atelier Cheshire. The aim was to focus on the online sale of luxury

“Fast fashion has taken over, but at a price, in the UK, an estimated £30 billion of unworn clothes hang in our wardrobes and clothing worth £140 million goes to landfill every year. What we are doing has a positive impact on the planet.” She continues: “Buying preloved is also a great way of affording luxury items without breaking the bank – and getting hold of things that are no longer available. “Someone may have just used something a couple of times or it could be brandnew, and we can still offer it at less than retail price. “Furthermore, because the luxury goods sector sees a lot of price hikes, these items can be really good investments.”

“The industry standard has always been a 50/50 split, whereas we guarantee at least 60% of the sale price will go to the seller,” says Michelle. “We take a long-term approach and work with people to build relationships and trust, therefore, we are always happy to negotiate.”

Launched in lockdown: Aroma Casero We speak to our very own Emily Fitzgibbons, who like many on furlough, started a little lockdown side business during the 2020 pandemic

How it started During lockdown, like many employees up and down the country, I was put on furlough and thought I’d utilise my time wisely. There’s only so much daytime TV and Netflix you can watch whilst staying inside! When I was younger, like most kids, I used to mess around making ‘potions’ using all mum’s best shampoo and bubble bath (sorry mum) and I remember begging for a soap-making kit once for Christmas, so I’ve always had an interest in this kind of thing. I love anything home fragrance or decor related, so I decided to take a shot at making candles and wax melts, originally as a hobby, but then family wanted to buy and friends started showing an interest, and then friends of friends and so on. I set up a proper website, where everything could be all in one place. The first ‘proper’ sale happened within 48 hours and I was over the moon. About Aroma Casero Aroma Casero offers a range of home fragrance products, from candles and wax melts to car and reed diffusers and even bath and body items. The business is fully CLP compliant, vegan-friendly and offers luxury products at affordable prices. There’s something for everyone in terms of scents; fresh, fruity, sweet, floral, there’s even designer dupes. I leave the photography and visual side of things to my partner. She has a really creative eye when it comes to images and angles, whereas I’m more of a wordsmith. Plus, she’s a great second opinion when it comes to choosing scents – I can be very indecisive!

The name is a play on ‘homemade scent’ in Spanish. We tried many different names, some sounded cheesy, some were commonly used, but we wanted something different and unique. Granted, we have to explain what it means sometimes, but it’s a great conversation starter!

Everyone thinks it’s so easy... There’s much more to it than just melting and pouring wax. We use only veganfriendly oils and soy wax, which, it turns out, can be very temperamental. There’s a lot of practice involved and so many things that can go wrong; from cracking and dipping to sinkholes and frosting, not to mention all the different temperatures needed to melt, add colour and oils, cool and pour. It can take a lot of patience – I’m not sure how I do it, to be honest! I guess it’s the satisfaction you feel when they work out well and someone buys them.

What’s next We’ll just go with the flow! Our made to order personalised gift hampers have been so popular we’ll be extending the range with limited edition seasonal and occasion hampers. A set amount of Bestsellers themed hampers will be made, filled with Lemon Drop, Rhubarb and Rose, goodies, and once they’re gone, they’re Birthday Cake and Inspired Aventus gone! We’re starting with New Year's (a take on Creed aftershave) have been Eve hampers, on sale in December, selling the most recently. Our new containing firework and 2021 shaped Christmas scent, Frosted Forest, sold out wax melts, party poppers, Prosecco in two days. It’s a light and fresh burst of and more! The current Christmas range lemon, pine, menthol and eucalyptus, so boasts amazing new scents; White we can see why people love it! We have Chocolate Cookies, Vanilla Frosting, signature scents that are available all year Warm Cinnamon, Snow Fairies and round, whilst others change seasonally Frosted Forest, and products include and the most popular are then added to festive-shaped wax melts and hanging the signature scent list. In terms of wax melt baubles. Our advent calendars products, our snap bars fly out and our sold out within the first week! Overall, hampers have proven to be well liked it’s been great to have something to too. They’re a great gift for any occasion focus on during a hard year and as – as a teacher thank-you gift or birthday things start to get back to normal, we present. They’ve been selling like hope to continue and develop more. hotcakes in the run up to Christmas.

STYLE This Christmas, let’s all raise a glass or twelve to absent friends By Catherine Saunders. Read more at www.ladymuck.style Christmas is going to be especially tough this year. Last year, my biggest worries were how to fit 24 people around a table meant for 12, whether I had enough booze to keep Uncle Martin and Cousin Sue from coming to blows over politics, and if I could actually squeeze into my Christmas dress after sneakily scoffing (and then replacing) several Cadbury’s selection boxes in the run up to the 25th. What I’d give to be facing such trivial problems this Christmas. Instead, like millions of families across the UK, I’ve been filled with sadness and dread at the thought of not being able to get together with all my loved ones as we usually do over the festive period; so much so, that I have been wondering if it might be better all-round if Lord Muck and I just slob out in bed, watch boxsets and ignore Christmas completely.

plan. Via Zoom, of course. No masks or hand sanitiser required. And you know what, I’m actually quite excited. I will get to see everyone I love and I will get to drink, a lot. Result. I’ve grouped family and friends into 12 groups and have set up a Zoom session with one group each day, from the 25th December right the way through to the 6th January. I’ve drafted out the cocktail recipes we will be drinking and emailed everyone, so they have plenty of time to get what they need.

The aim will be to kick off on Christmas Day with a homage to A Partridge in a Pear Tree, a Champagne elderflower cocktail containing Champagne, elderflower cordial, muddled pear and thyme – the latter two from my kitchen herb garden. On Boxing Day, it’s Two Caramel Turtle Doves – a mix of But my mother always told me that when amaretto, Baileys, Tia Maria and cream. the going gets tough, the tough get going. And for the heady days that follow: Three So, I have hatched a plan. A Twelve Days French Martini Hens (vodka, Chambord, of Christmas Cocktails Get-Together pineapple juice); Four Calling Bubbly

Birds (crème de menthe, Champagne, lime); Five Golden Rings (Goldschläger schnapps, vodka, apple juice); Six Geese a-Laying (eggnog); Seven Seductive Swans a-Swimming (vodka, blackberries, lemonade); Eight Maids a-ChocolateMilking (Cointreau, White Curaçao, brandy, cream); Nine Pink Ladies Dancing (gin, grenadine, cream); Ten Jack Lords a-Leaping (Jack Daniel’s, grenadine, lime); Eleven Pipers Piping (hot, buttered rum) and, finally, on January 6th, Twelve Drummers Drumming (bourbon, apricot brandy, syrup, lemon). So, if you are dreading Christmas, why not give it a go? But I warn you, you better order your ingredients quicksmart – our family and friends seem to be rather excited at the prospect of 12 days of drinking and seem to have nabbed a lot of booze delivery slots already. Right, must dash. Have just heard from Cousin Sue. No White Curaçao to be found in the Dales… December/January 2021 | salutions.co.uk

Home Cooking with Julie Neville We sit down with nutritionist and author Julie Neville to chat about her new foodie venture helping you to create cost-effective meals with simplicity Like many people stuck at home earlier this year, Julie, wife to former Manchester United and England footballer Phil Neville, decided to launch a new project, Home Cooking with Julie, which encompasses a website, Instagram and YouTube channel. “There were no pre-plans for this before lockdown occurred,” says Julie, “along with most of the country, I started cooking a lot more. It went from quick breakfasts to three three-course meals a day. Phil and the children would share pictures of our meals with our family and friends on WhatsApp.” And it didn’t take long before this became a regular routine. “We’d have people messaging every day, ‘what’s Julie cooking today?’, and soon after that, they were asking for step-bystep videos and recipes, to the extent I’d find myself typing up fully-fledged menus most days!” And so, the idea was born. “People always say to me, ‘that looks amazing, I can’t do that’, but they most definitely can!” smiles Julie. “I want to inspire people and show them that home cooking can be done easily after work or a long day. Some dishes are from pan to plate within 30 minutes.” Julie’s channels boast a broad spectrum of delicious meals, none of which are particularly difficult or time-consuming,

some even utilising leftovers, so there’s very limited food waste. Talk about cost-effective! Plus, there’s something for everyone. Julie caters for a variety of diets; from vegan and veggie to pescatarian. “I myself am vegetarian,” Julie says, “and I eat mostly vegan meals, but not everyone I live with eats like me! So, I cook a range of different dishes every day. I’m also allergic to gluten and garlic, so I know what it’s like to be in the minority when it comes to food – one of the main reasons we’re planning to add lots more vegan, dairy free and gluten free recipes online in the future.” Julie’s website also offers themed menus, such as ‘A Night at the Movies’, and dishes honouring her Irish heritage, including soda bread and a hearty Irish stew. “I’ve really tried to cover lots of bases and think outside the box. Many people get bored when it comes to food, which needn’t be the case.” And the same goes for Christmas.

December/January 2021 | salutions.co.uk

“Never say never, there’s too much to put into one book, but I could definitely split them up into separate themes. I’ve never really had any aspirations to be an author and I’m a total novice, but I love writing and am quite studious, so yes, maybe in future.” And her favourite cooking tip? “Always prep beforehand, it saves a lot of time and stress. I’m by no means a professional chef, but I know how to provide goodquality home cooking and have picked up many tips along the way.” Julie’s website, YouTube channel and Instagram are totally free for everyone to use and enjoy and feature not just recipes but top tips, video tutorials, cooking and baking FAQs and personal lifestyle advice, such as how to get rid of cooking smells and how to entertain properly… when we’re allowed to again.

There’s also plans to collaborate with “I prefer twists on festive favourites other brands and companies for rather than the same things we see each exclusive offers and discount codes – year,” she says, “I also like to make edible so, watch this space! Christmas gifts, which saves money, is more thoughtful and you can get the kids involved to make it a real family affair!”

Shaking up the city’s fast-food scene Are you ready to meet your new favourite burger? We went behind the scenes at Manchester’s diner with a difference Shakedown, where dedicated fans flock to enjoy magnificent buildyour-own burgers and sensational treat-laden shakes… In flavour The loyal family of Shakedown devotees – a handful of celebrities included – hasn’t stopped expanding since the diner first launched. For them, there’s simply no better burger in town. The excellent customer service, the bespoke burgers, the dedication to the freshest and funkiest ingredients, oh, and the fact you can actually watch your food being made while you wait, are just a few of the reasons Shakedown is effortlessly maintaining its ‘Manchester’s flavour of year’ crown.

Whilst the team had every confidence in their vision pre-launch, they didn’t expect the response the diner received early doors; the incredible online buzz that suddenly surrounded the brand and just how many people would rush through the doors and into the diner, which is all sparkly-clean and boldly designed in black and super-bright bumble-bee yellow, courtesy of local company Neon Guys. They even had to change gas supplier to keep up with the demand in the kitchen! The rush meant the small but perfectly formed diner sometimes looked more like a nightclub than a place to eat.

Covid-safe The safety of Shakedown customers is an absolute priority. Originally, Shakedown offered inhouse dining, takeaway and kerb-side delivery, but now, two lockdowns in and to ensure everyone, even those shielding, has the opportunity to enjoy the menu, delivery partners Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats are on board. During the first lockdown, a time when so many big-name burger makers were shutting shop, Shakedown continued to safely serve the community. The diner and kitchen are deepcleaned daily and customers are required to wear masks (you can even buy one on-site) and use the Shakedown track and trace app using their phone. There’s even a high-tech order screen outside the diner, which also allows you to see your food being prepped and cuts out the ‘is mine ready yet’ scenario. The team are in the process of installing an outside

canopy and heating to stop customers feeling the winter chill. Committed to quality As well as serving quality food and drink that stands out from the famous-name crowd, the Shakedown team are fully committed to providing quality customer service. If a customer experience isn’t perfect, they will replace or refund; their ethos being to turn a rare bad review into a good one. Equally, the brand aims to create a fun, caring environment for employees; wanting them – whether they carve out a career within the business or not – to remember their time working there with fondness. Helping the local community Recently, Shakedown created black beanie hats featuring its distinctive brand colours, which customers could buy with donations of £4 or above and every penny went to the RECLAIM

project. The latter works to support working-class young people in the region; giving them a voice, breaking down barriers to achievement and affecting social change. Helping local people and charities is high on Shakedown’s future schedule, as is opening up more diners in the suburbs… Future eats The final touches are being put to a brand-new Shakedown diner in Wythenshawe. As with its successful predecessor, all items on the menu will be made fresh on-site daily and there are some new desserts around the corner too (a delectable cornflake tart and key lime pie included). The dream is to open at least five more diners in the next five years. All will deliver the same recipe for success, and that success will be shared with those who need it within the community. Watch this space and enjoy your burgers!

SIS4ERS Distillery The festive season is approaching, so most of us will be reaching for an alcoholic tipple (two 2020 lockdowns don’t help either). We love these pre-mixed gin and tonic cans from Salford gin makers SIS4ERS Distillery. Available in two flavours, the collection includes the SIS4ERS Signature Dry Gin and Indian Tonic and a SIS4ERS Strawberry Gin with Elderflower Tonic. Pioneering robot revolutionises hip and knee joint replacement Adding a new level of precision and accuracy

In October 2018, Spire Manchester Hospital was proud to be the first facility in the North West of England to introduce Mako, pioneering robotic technology that has transformed the way hip and knee replacements are carried out. Now, two years on, the use of Mako has gone from strength to strength, with an impressive 500 patients benefitting from Mako robot-assisted operations at the hospital. Situated in the heart of Didsbury, Spire Manchester's Mako robot has set the precedent for exemplary care within the private hospital sector. The Mako robot offers the best of both worlds – the control of a highly skilled and experienced consultant coupled with robot technology, which enables the consultant to achieve the optimum degree of accuracy.

For more information or to make an appointment: 0161 447 6700 www.spiremanchester.com

Compared to traditional surgery, Mako robot-assisted surgery has been proven to:

• Significantly reduce pain after surgery • Allow a faster recovery in early knee movement • Perform joint replacement surgery with 2 - 3 times the accuracy Since we launched this pioneering technology, we’ve treated patients from around the UK and received outstanding feedback from those who have benefitted.

Is 2021 your year of positive change? 2020 has been a trying year for everyone. But what if you’re living in the pressure cooker that is an unhappy marriage, contemplating separation or divorce? You don’t have to be stuck in limbo, explains family and matrimonial expert Christine Barker, a partner at Manchester’s Ward Hadaway “As I sit in my home office reflecting on the year that has just passed, it feels as if just about everything in the world has changed irreversibly, yet so much has stayed fundamentally the same.

already on shaky ground, the current situation is likely to have opened huge fault lines. But while the pandemic is ongoing, that doesn’t mean you have to live with your circumstances indefinitely.

“Our clients still tell us that they want to make positive steps towards a better life for themselves and their families. Yet now the prospect of separating from a life partner, while daunting at the best of times, in this climate can feel completely overwhelming.

“We are working with lots of couples who want to move forwards with their lives and are managing to uncouple despite the turmoil in the wider world.

“But I am hopeful. The new year signals new hope for many, and the pandemic need not create complete paralysis, but instead be a catalyst for positive change. “We understand internal discord and disruption remain part of everyday life for some couples and families as relationships falter and external pressures add insurmountable tension. Many people feel completely trapped by their uncertain circumstances, but the truth is, you can still move forwards with your life and many of our clients are doing just that. “There’s no doubt that 2020 has brought anxiety to even the most stable of family situations. If your relationship was

“It all starts with a conversation, and we can do that in whichever way suits you. We are still ‘open for business’ and working, which means we can meet in a socially distanced manner, either faceto-face at a place of your choosing, near your home or at our homes or offices in Manchester. Or if you’d prefer to meet virtually or talk over the phone, we can do that too. Talking about your options can relieve a great deal of anxiety and give you a focus and a plan of action.

“In some cases, the court process has slowed, but there are workarounds. Private Financial Dispute Resolution (FDR) is when parties pay for a financial remedy specialist to act as a private FDR judge. That person may be a solicitor, barrister or retired judge. The private FDR takes place at a time convenient to all parties, usually in solicitors’ offices or barristers’ chambers, and a full day is normally set aside to maximise the prospects of settlement. It takes the place of the in-court FDR and if a resolution can be found, it avoids the case going to trial. It can remove months of negotiation, allowing both parties to move forwards quickly. “While external factors beyond your control may be shaping the world beyond your walls, there is still much you can do to take control of what matters most to you. Understanding what’s possible is the first step towards a better life and we have many years of experience helping unhappy couples create new beginnings. If the only way is out for you, think about making 2021 your year of positive change.

“If you do decide to move forwards with divorce proceedings, the courts are still up and running too. If you’re thinking of separating from your partner, divorce proceedings can and are still being issued. It is still possible to issue court applications, if needed, to resolve any issues relating Get in touch today and explore your to money or children, when these can't options.” be dealt with by agreement.

ASK THE EXPERTS Anna Laws Anna Laws is a Senior Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapist at Spire Manchester Hospital, with a specialist interest in sports injuries, clinical pilates and athlete screening. As a keen runner herself, Anna has a particular interest in preventing and rehabilitating running injuries. What injuries are classed as running injuries? The most common running problems are overload injuries affecting the lower limb and include; anterior knee pain, ITB syndrome, medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), stress fracture, plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy. Physiotherapy is essential in assessing and treating these conditions. Why are running injuries so common? The complex and repetitive nature of running can make runners prone to overuse and overload injury. Whether you’re a competitive or recreational runner, you’re highly likely to suffer from an injury at some time. It’s estimated that a staggering 65-80% of runners suffer from injury every year! Running injuries are often caused by biomechanical imbalances and muscle dysfunction, but can also be caused by overload and training

errors. These injuries restrict performance, disrupt training plans and sometimes cause runners to stop running all together. Can runners avoid injury? Yes – prevention is better than cure! We designed a screening assessment for athletes, which includes a full biomechanical analysis of fundamental movements specific to running. We then identify any imbalances and address these through advice and specific exercises, which reduce the risk of injury, improve performance and enable you to keep running. We also give advice on training programmes and cadence and running technique, and we always recommend runners try our sports pilates classes, which focus on core, hip and knee strengthening to help reduce the risk of injury.

Mike Hayton Mr Mike Hayton is an OrthTeam Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon.

How has Covid-19 impacted your patient consultations? At the OrthTeam Centre, during the first lockdown, when we were unable to provide face-to-face care, we held secure video and telephone consultations. This was not new to me, as I have been doing this for many years with the long-haul professional athletes that I look after. It was great to see my colleagues embracing this technology and being able to continue to provide care and support to patients. How has Covid-19 impacted operations? I am really fortunate in that I have access to an ambulatory procedure room and can perform the vast majority of hand cases under local anaesthetic without a tourniquet.

Some bigger procedures were put on hold for a while; however, it has been amazing how understanding my patients have been. What are the positives that will come out of this pandemic? Although we are continuing to provide face-to-face care at the OrthTeam Centre, I think we will see the demand and use of video consultations continue, particularly for postoperative patient assessments. We will also see a greater use of technology, including electronic medical records and image transfer, both of which the OrthTeam Centre is progressing.

ASK THE EXPERTS Michelle Payne Michelle Payne is a partner with Atelier Cheshire, an online boutique that sells preloved designer items at ateliercheshire.com Are designer bags worth the investment? Absolutely! If you are looking to purchase an item that could hold, or even increase, its value, then buy wisely. Not all brands hold their value, but the likes of Hermès, Chanel and Dior really do stand the test of time. From an investment perspective, it’s a win-win – you get to use the item and then resell it with little loss or perhaps even a small profit.

authenticity and proof of purchase will add so much value to your item and aid a quicker sale. It is also important to be mindful! Beautiful designer bags are tangible items – they can stain, mark and wear, resulting in a lower value for your bag should you wish to resell. Of course, you want to use your bag but, if you want to retain value, it is important to treat your investment with the respect it deserves!

Some might argue that luxury bags hold better than stocks and shares – in fact, at the end of 2019, Knight Frank introduced Hermès handbags into their Luxury Investment Index (KFLII), the bags proceeded to top the investment assets performance charts with 13% annual growth.

How do I know it is authentic? Sadly, counterfeits are the nemesis to the luxury goods market and the counterfeiters are getting more sophisticated. There are so many areas to consider regarding authenticity. These range from the physical things you can see, such as material and stitching, through to those the eye wouldn’t spot. We have a strict authentication process and will turn down any item of which we are not 100% certain.

How can I retain value in my bag? Preloved customers are extremely discerning, so retaining boxes, dust bags,

Joanne Freeman For more than 10 years, Joanne Freeman has been Regional Fundraising Manager at children’s charity Brainwave and has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity. What do Brainwave do? We work with children with disabilities and their families to provide bespoke, homebased therapy and exercise Programmes tailored to each child, to help them to achieve their fullest potential. Our multidisciplinary team consists of qualified physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and learning development support workers. Our Programmes are life changing. Children who could not move, now walk. Those who could not make a sound, now giggle and their low attainment at school is now greatly improved. Given the current climate, how are charities coping with lost revenue? With the postponement and cancellation of nearly all our fundraising events this year, our finances have been, and will continue to be, severely impacted.

The closure of our shops continues to have a significant impact too. We have a fantastic team, both paid and voluntary, who are always going the extra mile for Brainwave. We are creative and dynamic and have adapted our services and approach to fundraising too. We have developed a virtual therapy service, Brainwave Online, which ensures families can continue accessing our essential therapies from home and we are fundraising ‘virtually’ too. Which Brainwave initiatives can our readers get involved with? In the run up to Christmas, we are holding a Virtual Balloon Race to raise vital funds. There are fantastic prizes, including two family holidays and an Amazon Fire tablet. Balloons are just £5 each and can also be gifted, so it might be a good alternative to a secret Santa gift or sending out Christmas cards!

Kirsten & Jennifer – Sisters in law Meet the leading female lawyers delivering a unique brand of family law in the North West

At a time when the world already feels like it’s been turned upside down, facing a family crisis, such as divorce, can feel utterly insurmountable.

68

Fortunately, for those who currently find themselves seeking legal support, there’s Lund Bennett – a small boutique family law practice based in the flourishing town of Altrincham and led with unequivocal compassion and niche expertise by founding partner Kirsten Bennett and newly appointed Jennifer Roulston.

“I’d been watching the practice from the wings for several years,” reveals mum-of-two Jennifer, “and to join it was an opportunity I simply couldn’t miss – a step away from a more commercial law approach towards Kirsten’s small-is-beautiful vision. I’m really passionate about what we can achieve together for our clients.”

Small is beautiful Kirsten, who trained in Manchester, co-founded the practice in 2012. Earlier this month, Jennifer, former family department lead at a regional law firm, leapt on board.

“I’m so excited to work with someone so like-minded,” echoes Kirsten, “you see, together, we are able to offer a personalised service to every client. They’re never just a number and, instead, we get to know them as individuals.”

Over 30 years’ experience Between them, this freshly formed dream team have over 30 years’ experience; you can trust they’ve successfully handled a case just like yours before and handled it with a sincerity and approachability that instantly puts you at ease and erases fears. Both women are all too aware that D-day is fast approaching – the unofficial name for the period immediately after Christmas when a flurry of people file for divorce.

By Lisa McMahon

“For some people filing for divorce, this will be the first time they’ve visited a solicitor,” says Kirsten. “It can be scary. For us, it’s about having a relationship with a client whereby they trust you 100% and know that you’ll do what is right for their family.” Changing lives for the better As well as divorce, Lund Bennett’s other services include children law, prenups and issues relating to unmarried couples. Kirsten also has a specialist interest in missing people and has secured a Declaration of Presumed Death for a number of families.

What makes family law so important to them both? “The results really change people’s lives,” says Jennifer, “and, in that respect, I feel very privileged to do what I do.” Kirsten agrees: “I love seeing the difference you make – from the first time you meet, when the world has fallen from beneath their feet, to the end result… the transition in them can be remarkable.”

Understanding the current climate Mindful of the financial impact of Covid-19, the partners are happy to discuss funding with individual clients and, if appropriate, come up with a payment plan. “Similarly,” says Jennifer, “we understand that whilst Covid-safe, socially distanced appointments are available, some people might feel more comfortable chatting via telephone or video conference call, and that’s fine, we just look forward to speaking to you.”

Started in 1966 by avid walker and former CHS teacher of geography Ian Ray, the school’s charity hike usually sees its senior pupils embark upon a 20km walk. This year, with social distancing restrictions in place, the school extended the invitation to all and asked walkers, cyclists and skaters to cover five or eight miles in one virtual expedition to raise money for East Cheshire Hospice, 42nd Street, Beechwood Cancer Care and Childflight, along with Hope 4 the World and CHS's work with communities in the Gambia. St Ambrose Prep welcomes girls for the first time in more than 70 years

The Trustees of St Ambrose Preparatory School have announced the school will become co-educational from 2021, welcoming both boys and girls aged three to 11. Headmaster, Frank Driscoll, who has revealed the news to parents of the Catholic school in Hale Barns, said: “We’re delighted to offer families of both girls and boys an opportunity to be part of our wonderful, caring community. By extending our rich and diverse education, we will be able to provide a family-based school, which can serve daughters and sons together.” The only independent Catholic prep school for boys in the country outside of London, Mr Driscoll added: “This is an exciting moment in the school’s 70-year history and one that has been carefully considered over several years. “We continue to be committed to providing our pupils with a secure, stimulating environment in which they can flourish and believe that becoming co-educational will enable boys and girls to work together, respect each other, form friendships and better prepare for the future.

“We strongly believe that with men and women working and socialising together, we need to equip the next generation of young people with the skills to thrive and develop in our diverse society. Being part of a co-educational community can promote respect and understanding and enable the pupils to express themselves in a mixed environment.” The school will initially admit girls aged three to nine from January, with those aged 10 and 11 able to join the school from September 2021. Chair of Governors, Mark Butler, commented: “St Ambrose Preparatory School has a long tradition of providing its pupils with a warm and focused educational environment and we are excited to offer this opportunity to families of boys and girls.” For further information, please contact Headmaster, Frank Driscoll, on 0161 903 9193. As I write this, we are about to enter another period of lockdown lasting until at least 2nd December, so it goes without saying that you do need to check with the venue that their Christmas and New Year events are happening. Many are trying their best to navigate everchanging rules. On the bright side (it is Christmas after all), several local venues have announced festive events – all socially distanced, of course – and many also have innovative online or outdoor activities. All of the newly opened theatres and venues have strict Covid-19 guidelines, but all have managed to devise them rather cleverly so that you can still have fun and relax whilst feeling safe. Many of our gig venues and concert halls are still dark sadly, but let’s hope it isn’t too long before they become part of the city’s vibrant social landscape once again. Please support your local venues if you can, whether online or in person, they are all working hard to offer as normal and festive an experience as they can in these difficult times.

STAY-AT-HOME TECH

If the past year has taught us anything, it’s the importance of making our own homes as comfortable as possible. All that time spent behind closed doors is a lot more bearable if we have enough toys to play with.

Bose noise-cancelling headphones Noise-cancelling headphones have become a vital tool for anyone trying to work from home – making busy days of conference calls far less tiring and then enabling total relaxation when the day is done.

Panasonic HZ2000 According to some experts, this isn’t just the best TV of the year, it could be the best TV ever made. This is no small accolade, given that we are living in a time when the ‘big telly’ has never been a more essential part of the home. The picture is nothing less than cinematic – with industry-leading brightness, colour and contract and the 140W Dolby Atmos speakers deliver sound to match. Best of all, it’s competitively priced for a specification of this level, with deals available for under £3,000 for the 55-inch model. johnlewis.com

Some may find the sensation of noise cancelling a little disorientating, but Bose – who pioneered the technology decades ago – have made it intuitive and totally flexible, with the option to set your own desired level, from total isolation to ‘transparency’, which means you can enjoy music while hearing the world around you at the same time. Sound quality, comfort and, above all, ease of use make these the ones to beat. £349.95, bose.co.uk

Nintendo Switch The Nintendo Wii was credited with having transformed computer gaming from an activity just for kids into an inclusive experience for the whole family. There was certainly more advanced ‘pro gamer’ tech available at the time, but the genius of Nintendo was how it was packaged, marketed and made entertaining for all walks of life. Now we have the Switch, which has something to offer everyone, from every 13-year-old boy’s obsession Fortnite to the latest Mario Kart, which even gets granny moving. Catalyst waterproof iPad case When all the other toys are switched off and the house is quiet, there’s at least one person in the family that likes to watch Netflix in the bath. If you’ve ever dropped your device into the water, you’ll know how invaluable this little bit of kit is. £99.99, catalystcase.eu 78

NEED FOR SWEDE

Most car fans will already be familiar with the Polestar badge, especially if they prefer cars of the tyre-shredding performance variety. In recent years, if you wanted a Volvo with a bit (a lot) of extra spice, it was the Polestar badge you were looking for, much like AMG on a Mercedes or the fiery RS-branded Audis, you get the picture. Now that Polestar has emerged as a brand in its own right, and rather than going after the Germans in the horsepower wars, it’s moved with the times and gone electric. As a direct descendant of the Volvo family tree, it has all the style, safety and thoughtful design you’d expect – but

in the rapidly growing electric mobility market, it also has some stiff competition in the innovation stakes. Despite being a relatively new contender, however, the new Polestar 2 has just been voted Luxury Car of the Year… in Germany, no less! It swept the board in categories including design, driving pleasure, drivetrain, handling, quality, comfort, practicality, safety, environment, infotainment, significance and price/performance ratio. Expect to pay over £50,000 and expect to be impressed. polestar.com

LEAF IT TO THE EXPERTS When it comes to reliability, the experts can surely be found in Japan. Every family has at least one ancient uncle with an equally ancient Nissan Micra or similar, which he insists will outlive all of us. And he’s not far wrong. There’s a whole new conversation around reliability as we find ourselves in the middle of nothing less than a motoring revolution. The inevitable takeover of electric vehicles will

happen sooner or later, but it will be sooner if people can be convinced of things like battery lifespan, ease of maintenance and the ironing out of faults. Nissan has applied its own worldleading knowhow to addressing these questions and been rewarded for its efforts: its own electric Leaf model has been named most reliable electric car by British company Warrantywise.

The research looked at the frequency of repairs, common faults, cost of repair and age at the time of repair and found that the average Leaf was in better order than its petrol or diesel counterparts even after the manufacturer’s warranty had expired – making the Leaf a second -hand electric bargain. Even new, the Leaf is an extremely affordable option, starting from just £29,000. nissan.co.uk
