Hello,

Over the past few years, we’ve all learnt to live with more uncertainty than we would have liked; the pandemic meant that large family gatherings and Christmas traditions had to be cancelled or scaled down and we became used to eating outdoors in the freezing cold and going for long walks. This year, once again, we are dealing with challenges of a different sort, globally, closer to home and economically. But don’t stress, Christmas is two days out of 365, when we usually eat, drink and spend far too much money.

So, this year, I am going to think Sunday roast and not Christmas dinner and remind myself that the supermarkets are only closed for a couple of days and that they won’t sell out of prosecco and Champagne, in the hope that come January, my clothes still fit and my bank account can afford my energy bills.

If you have already begun your Christmas preparations, I’m impressed, you’re more organised than me. But if you haven’t, we are here to inspire and hopefully help you. Remember, it’s ‘the little things’ and the ‘thought’ that counts.

KP Aesthetics Speaks on : Feminine Wellness

As an FGM survivor, I am passionate about educating women about their bodies so that they can understand and be comfortable with their anatomy and sexuality, irrespective of their past. Because I know first hand the way in which traumatic experiences can affect the mind-body connection, I am keen to ensure that feminine wellness and support is a priority in the lives of those suffering with their intimate health and wellbeing.

Feminine wellness, which encompasses vaginal and pelvic health, unfortunately is still seen as a taboo topic. Understandably, it can be a sensitive and deeply personal subject, which can be very overwhelming if unaddressed, especially as we get older. However, with reliable information, trusted professional support and the personal intention to take care of ourselves, change and resolution is possible.

It’s important to point out that issues of stress incontinence, pelvic dysfunction, vaginal dryness and the changing of the labial and vaginal areas occur for different reasons. The ageing process plays a part in and can contribute to these changes.

Ensuring Intimate Health is a Priority

It seems strange that children in schools are educated about sexual health and pregnancy, but what menopause is, and the way it affects a woman's bodies, is not a part of this educational process. This is concerning, however it explains the gaps of knowledge about menopausal health in society today.

Perimenopause literally means ‘around menopause’ and relates to the time which the body moves into the end of the reproductive years. Women start to transition into this phase at different times, and the experience varies for everyone. Menopause marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycles and postmenopause is diagnosed as 12 months after the last menstrual period.

According to research from Nuffield Health one in four people with menopause symptoms are struggling to cope with their lives. With almost 13 million women in the United Kingdom either peri- or post-menopausal, and with associated symptoms sometimes lasting up to 15 years, these statistics are cause for concern.

Research has also shown that lack of medical knowledge in this area has led to many misdiagnoses, due to a misunderstanding of menopausal symptoms and the required treatment. Menopause can affect general mood and energy, and often women reporting low mood to their GP are prescribed anti depressants when this isn’t what they really need.

As well as affecting mood, menopause can impact cognitive capacity and memory, and with less oestrogen produced the tissues of the vulva and vaginal lining may become thinner, drier, and less flexible.

When it comes to the ageing process, there is often so much emphasis on the face and skin that the more sensitive feminine areas are neglected, as many of us forget the vagina is also affected as we mature.

Menopausal Symptoms Treatments

However, it’s not just the ageing process that can impact our bodies; women can also experience issues following pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnancy and childbirth feminine issues can be wide spanning, from vaginal dryness, soreness, changes in sex drive and altered sexual experience including pain during sex, to scar tissue and urinary incontinence.

Feminine issues can have a ripple effect, and affect the men and partners of those experiencing the perimenopause and menopause too. Children are also affected by what goes on in the house and family unit, and therefore it’s important to talk about any issues in an age appropriate manner to help them understand. Communication and honesty is key here to ensure family cohesiveness.

Understanding what is going on with your body is incredibly important. Ultimately understanding brings choice about the options available, whether this is treatment, or simply changes you want to make within your day to day life.

Glossy Charity Ball 2022

The Glossy Magazine Winter Wonderland Ball returned with a bang after a few years of absence following Covid. It was an incredible night enjoyed by all, full of delicious food, entertainment and drinks – all in a good cause.

This year’s charity ball was organised to raise funds for two local charities close to the founders of Glossy Magazine’s hearts; Maggie’s Cancer Care, which offers free walk-in cancer support for patients and their families, and PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide, which helps promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing support in young people, including providing local councils, healthcare professionals and schools with suicide prevention skills and training support.

Guests were dressed to impress in their best outfits and enjoyed a fabulous sit-down meal in the lavish surroundings of The Edwardian, a luxury hotel situated right in the heart of Manchester.

Commenting on the evening, Director of Glossy Magazine, Salim Uddin-Khandakar, said:

“In the 20 years we’ve been hosting this event, this has been the most challenging one to organise due to the economic climate and strain on people’s finances. Both Beverley and I can’t express our gratitude enough to all the sponsors; LSH Auto, Mercedes Benz, The Knee Doc, SMS Digital Media and Turkish Airlines as well as the numerous companies who donated prizes. Thank you!

WINTER BIKE COMmUTING:

TEN REASONS

Riding a bike to work is an absolute delight, not to mention the fact that a daily blast on the bike during otherwise dead time will very rapidly get you fit as a butcher’s dog. Of course, if you’re not used to the idea, then there are a lot of reasons why you might not fancy it – especially if a warm train cabin or a VIP underground parking space are at your disposal. But speaking from personal experience, I can give you at least ten reasons why bike commuting is great, even in the depths of a British winter.

1. It’s fun! You arrive at work feeling alive and full of energy and endorphins.

2. You’ll get fit. Even if it’s only 20 minutes each way, that adds up to a lot of gym training sessions you now don’t have to bother with.

3. It’s safer than you think. If you do your research, you’ll find a network of canal towpaths and parks that connect the suburbs to city centres. For example, if I don’t fancy weaving through traffic, I can get from Heaton Moor to central Manchester entirely off-road for only five extra minutes.

4. You’re not alone. If you don’t fancy being out alone after dark, you can set up a buddy system, either on a local Facebook group or with colleagues, to ride as a pack.

5. There’s no such thing as bad weather –only bad preparation (old Scottish saying). Certainly, with the right waterproofs, warm layers, gloves, helmet liner and waterproof shoes, you can enjoy your ride even in torrential rain.

6. It’s as cheap as you want it to be. As long as your bike is safe, you’re warm and well lit up, you’re good to go. However, if, like me, you love shopping, then you can justify endless purchases, such as the latest Rapha Gore-Tex Infinium winter jacket, Assos winter gloves, USE highpower lights and, of course, a bespoke titanium road bike to make every ride a proper session.

7. You make new friends along the way. Have fun pacing each other or playing cat and mouse between traffic lights, plus, of course, there’s safety in numbers.

8. It saves time. Yes, really! If you’re fit and your alternative is sitting in rush hour traffic or waiting for a sardine-tin train, you can actually get to work quicker – or at least no more slowly.

9. Employers love it. After all, what sort of workplace is going to discourage you? They should at the very least offer changing and bike storage facilities, plus tax-free bike purchase schemes – otherwise, they can expect to lose their best staff.

10. You’re doing your bit. This is the most important reason of all – the climate crisis isn’t going to be fixed by one person, but you’re making a big statement and setting a big example by massively cutting your personal carbon footprint.

What Everybody Ought To Know About Writing A Will And Drafting A Lasting Power Of Attorney

What does a private client solicitor do?

A Private Client Solicitor deals with the discussion and drafting of Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Trusts and helps to administer the estate of a person that has passed away.

Why is a Will important?

It is important for you to make a Will, whether or not you consider you have many possessions or much money. 61% of people in the UK still do not have a valid Will. That equates to approximately 30 million people.This is amazing when you consider the issues which can be avoided for your loved ones by this often-simple document. The problem is that many people often don’t see a Will as something that is necessary. Unfortunately, these people leave things too late, and this can cause serious problems for their family and loved ones following their deaths.

These are some common issues which I find many clients are unaware of :-

When a person dies without a Will, certain rules known as ‘the rules of intestacy’apply which dictate how much money, property and possessions should be allocated. This may not be how you had intended your estate to be divided or to whom it is distributed.

Unmarried partners and unregistered civil partners cannot inherit from each other without a valid Will.

Wills can be used to arrange who will care for your minor children should both parents die.

Also, a Will is revoked by marriage or civil partnership.

It is particularly advised to use a solicitor to draft your Will where you share property with somebody other than a spouse or civil partner; where you wish to make provision for a dependant who cannot care for themselves; where there is a high probability of somebody contesting your Will; you own property overseas or there is a business involved.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document which allows you to appoint somebody (The Attorney) to deal with matters on your behalf. There are two types of LPA, a Financial Decisions LPA which deals with your finances and property decisions, such as selling your house or managing your bank accounts and other investments. There is also an LPA for Health and Care Decisions, which deals with making medical decisions and liaising with local authorities and social services, care homes when issues arise and ultimately, it enables the Attorney to make life sustaining decisions. You must have sufficient mental capacity to be able to instruct a solicitor to draft a power of attorney.

Where a person lacks capacity, the options become more technical, expensive and limited and must be referred to the Court of Protection. This situation can be avoided for your family and loved ones by ensuring you have an LPA in place.

Spire Manchester Hospital achieves another ‘Outstanding’ CQC rating

The CQC carried out an unannounced inspection of surgical services offered at Spire Manchester in August 2022. In its published report, they rated the services ‘Outstanding’ overall, and for being well-led, and ‘Good’ for being safe.

In the report, CQC singled out for praise some of the hospital’s safety initiatives, including the presence of a surgical safety guardian in the operating theatres to drive the highest safety standards. Hospital colleagues were also praised for working with patients and the community to effectively plan and manage services.

Other areas that received positive feedback from the inspectors were the hospital’s improvement projects to improve the quality of patient care; positive patient feedback about the way colleagues treated them; and a special educational video to support patients undergoing joint replacements.

Lesley Lock, Hospital Director at Spire Manchester Hospital, said: “Maintaining an ‘Outstanding’ rating from England’s independent health regulator demonstrates Spire Manchester’s commitment to delivering incredibly high standards of care to people seeking treatments.”

“This rating is a true team effort. I know my colleagues will be delighted with the national recognition of continuing to make a positive difference to people’s lives through outstanding personalised care.”

During the pandemic, the hospital provided care to over 6,400 NHS patients who needed treatment for cancer and other critical conditions, as well as hosting Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust’s cystic 昀brosis service. It is now helping local NHS trusts in addressing waiting lists in the area.

The hospital provides surgery, medical care, critical care, services for children and young people, outpatients and diagnostic imaging.

An Interview with Imogen Massey

Here, Imogen talks about her favourite Rolex collection, the Rolex showroom at Prestons Wilmslow and gives her advice on choosing the perfect gift.

Tell Us About Yourself

I have always had a passion for fashion, high-quality luxury brands, 昀ne jewellery and watches. For me, working at Prestons Wilmslow was the perfect career choice. It allows me to join together all of these passions whilst making people feel special. I love the personal nature of the experience we o昀er. The showroom often hosts our clients to celebrate memorable occasions in their lives; weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, promotions and so on. It brings the team and I so much pleasure to make these occasions as special as they can be; the journey to selecting a Rolex is an experience in itself and I think my favourite part, which I talk about further below, is when a client is purchasing a gift for a partner or loved one and I guide them through the collection to the perfect choice.

What Is Your Favourite Rolex Collection?

I think my favourite is the Rolex Lady-Datejust and Datejust. The Datejust collection was 昀rst introduced in 1945 and the Lady-Datejust followed in 1957 they feature the most combinations or con昀gurations for an individual to explore.

The collection is so comprehensive that it allows you to select a watch that really suits your style perfectly. The collection features a range of sizes including the LadyDatejust, a 28mm case size, and the Datejust which is o昀ered with a 31mm, 36mm or 41mm case size. Each model is available in a selection of materials, bezels and bracelets, with a variety of complimentary dial colours and 昀nishes to choose from.

The con昀gurations are each timeless and classic; designed and developed by Rolex to withstand changes in fashion or style throughout the decades. For many clients, the most recognisable features of the Rolex Datejust are the iconic Jubilee bracelet, also introduced in 1945 speci昀cally for this wristwatch, the cyclops lens, later added in 1953 and the signature 昀uted bezel which is always crafted from 18ct yellow, white or Everose gold. The history behind each element of the watch is so interesting; I enjoy sharing the stories behind these elements with each client.

For many who visit us, the selection of dial choices is what really attracts them to either the Lady-Datejust or the Datejust. The range includes light, dark and brightly coloured dials as well as dials set with brilliant-cut diamonds, carefully selected by the brand, and decorative dials adorned with modern and intricate motifs. A personal favourite of mine is the new laser etched 昀oral motif dial. It was introduced to the Rolex Datejust collection in 2022 and features a beautiful repeated 昀oral design with diamonds at the centre of each motif. The dial is o昀ered in three distinct colours; olive green, azzuro blue and silver, perfectly matched to the material of the watch.

a Classic Style?

I would recommend the Rolex Day-Date. The collection, which was launched in 1956, was the only wristwatch with a semi-circular window at 12 o’clock displaying the day of the week spelt out in full. The collection, which is o昀ered in a 36mm and 40mm case size, features the specially-designed President bracelet available only in precious metal, 18ct yellow, white or Everose gold, and platinum. I absolutely love the President bracelet, it is so luxurious and exclusive. The semi-circular three piece links are incredibly comfortable and with it being a larger, 40mm, case size I feel that it wraps and 昀ts the wrist nicely.

I understand that for many the Day-Date 40 is considered, traditionally, a gentleman’s’ watch but in recent years the team and I have noticed many of our female clients exploring larger case sizes including the Day-Date, Air-King, GMT-Master II and the Cosmograph Daytona. The Day-Date is also o昀ered with a slightly smaller case size, 36mm, which is also really popular with both ladies and gentleman. Once again, this model is o昀ered with an assortment of di昀erent dial, bezel and material options, to suit the wearer. There are so many lovely con昀gurations with this collection but if I had to select one, it would be the Rolex Day-Date 36 in Everose gold. I would choose a 昀uted bezel, the President bracelet and the rosé-colour dial, set with diamonds. The rosé o昀ers a very feminine, elegant and classic pink hue which is the perfect addition to an Everose gold watch.

What Makes Rolex The Perfect Watch Choice?

I think that Rolex is the world’s most recognised watch brand, and it has the reputation to accompany this. I think the values of the brand are incredible. For example, the Five-Year International Guarantee which ensures the precision and reliability of the brand’s timepieces for 昀ve years from date of purchase. It truly re昀ects the craftsmanship and con昀dence the brand has in their watches.

I believe when you purchase a Rolex you are buying into a legacy or a history that you can pass on from generation to generation. Rolex watches are truly built to last and each is a truly special purchase.

If A Client Wants To Buy A Rolex As A Gift For A Partner or Loved One, What Advice Would You Give Them?

It is so important to understand the individual before you can advise them about a watch or a collection to consider. Constantly growing and moving upwards, House of Evelyn recently invested £100,000 on new machinery and training. Weddings and events stylist Alison says: “I have always loved arti ficial flowers. Their quality has really improved over the years. I only work with real flowers by incorporating them into my own arrangements. It’s the longevity of artificial flowers that I love so much, hence my company name, Lasting Memories. I meet clients at my showroom and hire out the flowers, trees, chair covers, vases and lanterns stored in my business unit. By recycling my wares, it’s eco-friendly.”

Alison’s big break came in 2013. She dressed a room for a Mottram Hall Hotel wedding and sensed an immediate rapport with the hotel staff. That relationship has continued, bringing her work to the attention of their corporate, private and celebrity clients. And she’s not looked back. With eight assistants on call, Lasting Mem ories can be relied upon to transform a bare room into a beautiful ceremonial location and then, within an hour, into a stunning dining area for anything up to 400 guests.

Weekends are hectic. It’s up and out in the early hours to prep weddings and functions, which must look perfect each time. And then back to dismantle the decorations. Naturally, for Alison, the most special nuptial adornments were for the marriage of her own 27-year-old son.

Decor colours change year by year. It’s costly but fun keeping up-to-the-moment – from the deep Cadbury purple of a decade ago to the pastels, sage greens, dusky pinks and creams of today.

People person Alison adds: “For weddings, the present trend is to dream up and actualise an unforgettable almost fairytale environ ment. Each couple’s looks of approval and wonder, plus their emotional hugs when they first see their room set out, mean the world to me.”

And Christmas! Alison’s initial embellishment of Mottram Hall’s Christmas trees was so much appreciated, she’s been commissioned annually to carry on since – and it’s a home service she offers celebrities and private clients like you too. In fact, one Prestbury customer has Alison and her team adorn all six of her trees!

The tree

Invest in a high-quality tree because it will last for years and keep its shape. When buying the right-height tree, always check the width, as this varies, and the tree may not fit your desired space. Once you have put your tree together, pull out and shape all your branches first, this will make your tree look fuller with no gaps. I use a star shape when pulling out my branches.

Lights

Make sure you buy a set of lights that is big enough for the size of your tree, as it will look much nicer with lots of lights. Start by adding your lights to the tree first, starting from the bottom and working your way up, making sure they are even on the tree. Turn your house lights off when you have done them, as this will show you any gaps you may have missed.

Decorations

Buy some lovely bigger decorations as showstoppers for your tree, these may cost more, but you can then fill with cheaper decorations to keep the cost down. Shop around for your decorations, as prices vary from place to place. Some great decorations can be found at really great prices at places like B&M.

Use different size baubles and they look lovely when clustered together too. I always like to use wire on these, as they’re easier to twist on to the branches (and keep in place) and easier to re move afterwards too.

Ribbons, voile and organza are a great idea to fill out the dec orations and adds a different texture to your tree. Also using lovely Christmas branches too.

I always like to decorate my trees to the floor as it makes your tree look bigger and there is no gap at the bottom. This can be done easily and cheaply by wrapping empty boxes and maybe adding ribbon decoration. You can also use things from around your home, such as lanterns and decorative boxes/baskets. An even simpler way is just adding a tree skirt, but make sure you add this when building your tree at the start.

Let’s talk Christmas decorations!

In previous years, we’ve installed decorations for our clients and even set dinner tables! My advice to you, if you’re thinking of enhancing your decs this year, is to first choose a metallic base colour, i.e., gold or silver, then a colour that you love to go with it, for example, I’m very traditional and go with gold, champagnes and red. With silver though, soft greens and icy blues go beautiful too. If budget allows, then pop down to TK Maxx or your local garden centre, where they have a wealth of beautiful Christmas items, which you could swap out for items you already have that are dated or tired. There’s no rule of less is more with decorations, it’s once a year, just have fun!

Renovation to rent

Our large home renovation for the rental market in Hale Barns is now let out to a Manchester United player and his family. They fell in love with it at first sight and reports are that not a single item we styled in the home has been moved yet! Such a huge compliment! In fact, Lord Muck used to run a family sweepstake, every New Year’s Day, taking bets as to the likely date when my yuletide madness would begin. One year, it was February 12th. Bravo Uncle Bob on that risky longshot.

Well, what was a festive-mad wannabe elf to do once she heard the local garden centre was having a closing down sale –everything tinselly, glittery, sparkly and, frankly, fire hazardousy at half price. Glit tering glass balls and garlands. Metres of luxurious silver tinsel. Cute frosty log table decorations. Giant pillar candles.

Shimmering bauble wreaths. Tinkly sleigh bells. No other choice but to buy up the entire lot. Regent Street would have been proud. Lord Muck on reading the bank statement? Not so much. But here in Spain, I am actually one of the more sen sible Brits abroad over Christmas. Honest, Uncle Bob. Because, whilst the rest of the world has important breaking news focused on wars, elections and energy prices, here in local expatsville, the Facebook groups are awash with breaking news of another sort.

This news comes courtesy of the highly active expat spy ring (or The Nerja Four, as I like to call them), who are out every day intelligence gathering,

Dashing here, there and everywhere Ru dolph, Dasher. Prancer and Vixen-like. Their acolytes waiting with baited breath, car keys at the ready, desperate for any leads to be divulged. Ready to spring into action, panther-like, at the sound of those WhatsApp pings...

Celebrations tubs landed. Crackers spotted. Cadbury selection boxes snapped up in bulk. Get down to the International Club to collect. Brandy butter located. Plum puddings pinpointed. Local air crews wined, dined and recruited to bring back a mountain of marzipan on their next trip back to London.

Meanwhile, all around us, our lovely Spanish neighbours go about their busi ness, enjoying their carefree week ends, winding down through autumn, going into the holidays calm, relaxed and full of energy. They, in turn, look on in be musement as us expats burn through petrol at an alarming rate, driving all over the place, desperate to source all our tra ditional favourites as we try to recreate home. Writing our mad to-do lists. At tempting to bake almond mince pies from scratch. Icing Christmas cake mes sages in 27°C degree heat. Not to mention the rather shameful tug-of-war fights over the last pack of Aldi’s warm glow solar fairy lights. And fisticuffs at dawn over mulled wine spice sachets.

So, this year, I have decided: I am joining my Spanish neighbours’ camp. Out with all the heart-attack-inducing stressful traditions, in with a relaxed family BBQ Christmas Eve, picnic on the beach Christmas Day and come Boxing Day, a drive up to Sierra Nevada and a day’s skiing. Bliss.

Right, must dash. Just received SOS from Lady Purbeck. Caught at Malaga Airport smuggling a Waitrose turkey and two dozen pigs in blankets in her suitcase…

Peppa the Pomeranian gets into the festive spirit with a Christmassy trip

As a dog, I am totally unaware of where I am allowed to go. I just follow my nose! Unbelievably, this doesn’t always go down very well with some breeds, i.e., people. They can get very barky if they feel you shouldn’t be there, which can be a bit scary for a pooch. I mean, all we want is somewhere decent to stay, good food and a spot of sightseeing.

I am just back from a trip to Christmassy York and as your roving reporter (or should that be Rover reporter?), I am here to give my verdict on dog-friendly places that humans will also enjoy.

First stop was the hotel. The Judge’s Lodging is a beautiful 18th-century former court building with lots of nooks and crannies and some fantastic outdoor areas.

We checked into a ground floor terrace room that had its own front door and was very handy for the cellar bar/restaurant, which I loved trotting through every time we left and arrived at the hotel.

They were also impressed by the huge bed, which l found to be very comfortable (until I was told to get off it) and all the other stuff they enjoy larking around with, such as tea and cof fee-making, ironing, and drying the fur on their head

We all ate at the dog-friendly hotel cellar bar one night and that was brilliant, as they’d made me a plate of food while the humans oohed and ahhed over starters of roasted artichoke and whipped goat’s curd for the vegetarian and a plate of excellent tempura king prawns for the car nivore followed by cauliflower steak and thick hand-cut chips and, for the meat eater, a classic plate of perfectly cooked steak and chips. I tried the steak and I can confirm that it was brilliant! A cheese selection – from which I was allowed a nibble – and a sticky toffee pudding were also very good.

Dog friendly? I had my own fluffy bed, bowls, of course, and because we were getting into the Christmas spirit, a doggy treat cracker. They also delivered a plate of freshly baked dog biscuits to my room, which disappeared very quickly.

Robotic radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer

There are several options for the treatment of prostate cancer. Low-risk cases are normally managed with active surveillance, which is a process of close monitoring and only treating at signs of change in the disease. For higher risk disease, treatment is either surgery to remove the prostate or radiotherapy. In some cases, there is a need to remove the lymph glands as well and all this can be performed robotically too.

Bob Baker – The Cheshire Wellness Centre –

Changing lives through his own experiences

Outgoing, friendly and hard-working, super-salesman Bob Baker, now 57, opened his Cheshire Wellness Centre on 1st April 2021 for anyone needing space, help, counselling and a sense of peace. Situated by the canal in the calm Cheshire countryside outside Lymm, the Cheshire Wellness Centre is by definition a safe haven. On its first day, Bob could only offer the services of one counsellor, but now, the Cheshire Wellness Centre boasts the expertise of more than 30 qualified therapists from 13 psychological and holistic disciplines.

These range from hypnotherapy and counselling to yoga, reiki and sound therapy. A non-medical facility, the Cheshire Wellness Centre attracts clients of all ages. Discretion and confidentiality are key. And should anyone present with seemingly serious symptoms, Bob and his team would not hesitate to suggest other avenues of treatment within our mainstream services.

What motivated Bob, in sales since the age of 19, to make this drastic career change?

Well, unbeknown to himself and in complete denial anyway, Bob was an alcoholic. He saw his daily tipple as a perfectly normal way of life – and great fun. After all, he had never degenerated into aggression of any sort, remained sociable and enjoyed his drinking. He would never start drinking before 4.30pm, but one drink led to another, like a never-ending revolving door, and that was the daily dilemma. Like so many other alcohol-dependents, when the bad times rolled, Bob saw alcohol as his crutch to help him through – from family bereavements to the various problems life threw his way. But ultimately, the comfort he sought from drink was a delusion. It led to deep depression, anxiety and a sense of morbidity. Inevitably, his otherwise stable family life came under threat too.

By 2020, Bob had accepted the implications of his ongoing drinkinduced mental and physical health problems. He suffered some liver damage, which has luckily now been addressed. Both antidepressants and counselling had proved ineffective in stopping his drinking. And even though the so-called ‘simple’ solution to his problems stared him in the face, Bob was still unable to say no to drink. He was addicted to it and says:

“Until you really do want to give up on any addiction, and that is what it was, until you actually can make the break, nothing, just nothing, will change. Alcohol is a depressant; at the time, you feel better, but you soon realise it makes things worse.”

Then came his ‘lightbulb’ moment. Feeling isolated and desperate, fearful of losing everything, Bob turned to his exasperated and by now skeptical wife and children to announce his enrolment on a private two-week rehabilitation course near Chester. Yes, at last he had made the decision to come clean, learn to abstain and start life afresh. And since May 2020, Bob hasn’t touched a drop.

It took time for his family to grasp the change was for real. But once their trust was regained, Bob’s confidence and natural tendency to put others’ needs ahead of his own came to the fore. He now wondered how to move forwards and perhaps provide others with the opportunities for help he had never found for himself in his times of need. Bob hit upon the idea of opening his own centre. But, most importantly, it would have to be in the right location. And so, it is.

The Cheshire Wellness Centre houses six rooms of varying sizes to accommodate appointments ranging from one-to-one, hour-long

sessions to larger group activities, such as yoga. Both clients and practitioners appreciate the positive affect of being closer to na ture in this Cheshire Wellness Centre environment. For starters, no-one arrives so stressed by town-centre parking that ‘winding down’ takes up a third of their actual appointment.

Bob explains: “We have a holistic approach to mental health issues. One of my missions is to help normalise mental health and make it more acceptable for men to come forward. 85 per cent of our clients are female. Presently, poor mental health among males still carries a stigma. We want people to accept their problems and realise others have them too. Yes, it’s OK not to be OK. Do not be ashamed.”

Getting to 34 London Road for those not in-the-know can be difficult, as there are no signs anywhere on the main strip of Alderley Edge. Instead, guests must venture into Parea, Alderley Edge to look for clues as to where the entrance is located.

Once inside, guests can relax in ambient, Art Deco surroundings. The cocktail menu includes popular classics and a range of martinis (from a French martini to an es presso martini) as well as an extensive Champagne menu, wine list and top-shelf spirits.

The term speakeasy was actually coined in the early 1820s, originating from the British phrase ‘speak softly shop’ (used to describe the home of a smuggler), which was later changed to ‘speakeasy shop.’

People then went on to use this terminology to describe places where alcohol was sold to the public illegally. Since these places did not want to attract attention, especially that of local law enforcement, the idea was that customers needed to keep the noise down, or ‘speakeasy.’

We visited on what was a very busy Thursday evening with the family and ordered an array of dishes. My family love lamb, so following the obligatory po podums, we ordered starters of lamb chops, tandoori king prawns, samosa chaat, bhel puri and my absolute new fa vourites, pani puri shots.

The mains attraction consisted of lamb shank biriyani, lamb chops (so good we needed more!), duck curry, vegan chicken curry and bhindi dopiaza. With sides of basmati rice, chilli and garlic naan, (lots of) Schezwan chips and two delicious ndoChinese dishes of hakka noodles and Schezwan rice.

As someone that is most definitely not vegetarian (unfortunately) and would always opt for steak or seabass when eat ing out, I now find myself ordering vegetarian food in an Indian restaurant and Dhoom Dhaam has a wide selection of tasteful vegetarian dishes to choose from. Washed down with a bottle of Favola

prosecco and a few glasses of Bombay Bi cycle, Dhoom Dhaam serves fine Indian cuisine in a stylish, sophisticated, relaxed space. The staff are friendly and attentive and it’s obvious they love what they are doing, as the restaurant is always full of chatty, happy customers.

Festive cranberry fizz

This would be equally delicious served as a refreshing mocktail, simply omit the gin.

Serves 2 100ml gin 100ml cranberry juice 1 tbsp lemon juice

Tonic water & rosemary sprigs to serve

1. Place the gin, cranberry juice and lemon juice in a jug with ice and stir to blend.

Put ice cubes into 2 tall highball glasses and pour in the cranberry mix.

2. Top up with tonic of your choice and serve with a sprig of rosemary.

It’s that wonderful time of year for gathering with family and friends and celebrating with a few drinks and some tasty food. But it doesn’t have to be stressful and overwhelming. Just a few simple but tasty bites and a delicious festive tipple is all you need to get into the spirit. These bites can be made well ahead and are so straightforward to make, and the added bonus is that they don’t cost the earth. And there’s a super-simple festive cocktail too, which can easily be adapted for non-drinkers.

Makes approx. 40 bites

For the bites:

3 tbsp olive oil

1 large onion, chopped

2 garlic cloves crushed

500g potatoes, peeled & diced

1 red pepper, deseeded & diced

100g chorizo, diced

Pinch of crushed chilli flakes

Pinch of smoked paprika

8 large free-range eggs

Small bunch flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 100g mature Cheddar cheese, grated

For the sauce:

100g almonds or cashews

1 clove garlic, peeled

400g jar of skinned roasted red peppers

1 tsp tomato purée

4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

½ tsp smoked paprika

4 tsp sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar to taste

Handful basil leaves

Spiced halloumi pastry twists

Makes approx. 32

2 tbsp smoked paprika

2 tbsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried chilli flakes

2 tbsp olive oil

500g block puff pastry 225g block halloumi, grated 1 medium egg, beaten

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Line two baking trays with parchment paper.

2. Place the paprika, oregano, chilli and olive oil in a bowl and mix together to make a paste.

3. Cut the pastry in half and roll out one half to a rectangle measuring about 32cm x 28cm. Brush the pastry all over with half of the spice mixture, then sprinkle half of the halloumi on one side of the pastry

along the long edge. Fold the pastry over the halloumi to create another rectangle measuring 32cm x 14cm. Gently press down the pastry over the halloumi using the rolling pin to seal in the filling.

4. Using a sharp knife, cut strips along the short edge about 1.5 cm wide to give approximately 15 strips. Brush each with the beaten egg and then carefully twist a few times and then lay on the prepared trays.

5. Repeat with the remaining pastry, spice mix and halloumi and lay the strips on the on the other tray.

6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden and puffed up. Place on a cooling rack to cool completely and then serve.

*Tip*

Will keep in airtight container for up to three days.

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas

4. Line a 30cm x 21 cm roasting tin with parchment paper.

2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan set over a low to medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and potatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until tender. Stir in the red pepper and chorizo and cook for 4-5 minutes or until the red pepper is tender and the chorizo sizzles, releases its oil and starts to crisp up. Stir in the chilli flakes and smoked paprika.

3. Meanwhile, beat the eggs in a large bowl and stir in the parsley and most of the grated cheese. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Add the potato mixture to the eggs, mixing well together. Pour the egg mixture into the prepared tin, tilting it to spread it out evenly. Place in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes until the egg is completely set and the top is golden.

5. Whilst the tortilla is cooking, make the red pepper sauce. Place the nuts in a food processor and blitz with the garlic until the nuts are finely ground. Add the

drained peppers, tomato purée, smoked paprika, a quarter teaspoon each of salt and pepper, vinegar and oil. Blitz until you have a smooth purée.

6. Slide the tortilla out of the tin onto a wooden board and cut into 3cm cubes. Top each cube with a teaspoon of red pepper sauce and serve skewered with a fresh basil leaf. Arrange on a serving platter.

The neighbourhood pizzeria Rudy’s Pizza Napoletana brings its relaxed dining con cept to the former Mad Giant food hall on Wilmslow Road in Didsbury.

Serving the perfect and classic Neapolitan pizza since 2015, from its original Rudy’s in Ancoats, the much-loved pizzeria has since opened more sites, with the brand-new 90-cover restaurant in Didsbury being its

fifth location in Manchester. Born out of passion for pizza, Rudy’s follows the au thentic Neapolitan tradition of pizza making, serving classic recipes such as Marinara, Margherita and Calabrese – all originating from Naples, the birthplace of pizza.

Rudy’s dough is made fresh daily using Caputo ‘00’ flour, which ferments for at

least 24 hours, alongside the best-quality ingredients imported from Naples, including San Marzano tomatoes grown on fields next to Mount Vesuvius, and Fior di Latte mozzarella.

In accordance with a truly authentic Nea politan technique, the dough is cooked in a Stefano Ferrara oven for just 60 seconds – resulting in a soft and light pizza with an airy and raised cornicione (the edge or rim of the pizza).

1. Compromise and respect the traditions

Each family celebrates Christmas in different ways and has their own traditions, often passed down generations, but when different families come together for Christmas, it can be difficult to respect the varying ways each family marks the occa sion. Christmas Day for some may be a brisk family walk before a traditional Christmas lunch, others may celebrate Christmas with a few drinks in the pub be fore a more casual dinner. For others, Christmas is a religious event and starts with a church service. There may be other traditions which may seem more trivial,

but which may be part of the fabric of what makes Christmas special to them –gathering to watch the Christmas episode of Doctor Who, for example. There is always room for compromise and to create new traditions together. Perhaps arranging the walk so that it passes a pub, allowing for a swift pint or two, or organising dinner time so that it does not clash with another event.

2. Give each other space…

Christmas can be a great opportunity to spend lots of time with friends and family, but it can get very claustrophobic very

quickly. Often families are cooped up inside together for long periods of time and it can quickly become a boiling pot when certain habits start to grate and tempers can flare. Don't let that become a problem and if somebody wants to escape for a while and go for a lie down or for a walk to take some time out, don't see it as a negative but just a natural part of spending protracted time in each other's pockets.

3.… but make time for yourselves together

That said, also make sure you dedicate some time to yourselves. It can be all too easy to spend the entire Christmas period

Financial worries can often be a catalyst to the breakdown of a relationship, so discuss a budget in advance and try to stick to it. Your kids will still have a great Christmas spending time doing Christmas things with family and not even notice if they get a few less pres ents this year.

5. Don’t sweat the little stuff

Everybody is searching for that perfect Christmas, one where everything goes ac cording to plan. But Christmas can be hard work, especially for the host, who can feel a lot of pressure to make sure ev ery thing is just right. But don't sweat the little stuff. Okay, the turkey may come out a little later than planned and the odd potato may be a little singed, but don't let it ruin the day. Issues here and there will quickly be forgotten and absolute dis asters will become part of the family's Christmas story, which will be looked back on fondly with a chuckle ("do you re member that Christmas when we had to have takeaway pizza because dad forgot to turn on the oven!"). Ultimately, it is one extremely busy day, not everything will be as anticipated, but give each other a bit of slack.

6. And if all else fails

Christmas is just a few days of the year, so remember that you will get through it. If things haven’t gone well, try not to let it ruin your Christmas and if you have chil dren, try to keep the energy up for them. Avoid making snap decisions based on what has happened over the Christmas period, particularly after one too many sherries. Christmas is unique and presents unique challenges, so don't let it cloud your judgment. There is plenty of time once the Christmas period is over to take stock and have a calm and rational conver sation to discuss any issues that have flared up and to seek any support and guidance that may help guide you and any decisions you decide to make.

How do I prevent a Christmas kitchen disaster? Any tips for a happy Christmas dinner?

Preparation is key. Pre-cook all vegetables and warm to order to avoid the stress on the day. Cook the meat and roast potatoes on the day for the best result. Making a great gravy a couple of days in advance not only helps ease pressure but will intensify flavours.

How do you make the perfect roast potatoes?

Maris Piper or King Edwards are great options. Peel and chop the day before

and leave in cold water in the fridge. Boil partially in boiling water for 15 mins and drain, allow to air-dry for 15 mins and toss in a colander. In a baking tray, heat some goose fat (rapeseed oil if vegetarian) and add the potatoes. For extra flavour, add fresh rosemary and garlic cloves in their skins. Roast on 200°C without turning for 40 mins, turn over and allow a further 20 mins on 180°C. They need to crunch when you bite. Season with cracked salt and pepper.

Any advice on what makes great gravy? Nothing goes to waste in my house, so all

trimmings from the veg are sautéed with onions, carrots, thyme and celery. I then deglaze with a good red wine. If you wouldn’t drink it, don’t cook with it is my advice. Add a nice poultry stock. Once the bird is carved, add the juices and any excess meat/skin to the stock. Thicken with a very small beurre manié (kneaded butter) and season. Once tasty and the right consistency, pass the gravy through a sieve. Be sure to make plenty, as everybody will want more.

What are the benefits of instructing a solicitor when you are getting divorced?

The divorce process can be a very stressful time and is full of unknowns. Solicitors are also removed slightly from the situation and can therefore provide you with clear advice, so you are able to make a fully informed decision.

Do all divorce and financial cases end up in court? It is not the case that you would have to attend court if you are going through a divorce or trying to resolve your marital finances. Many couples reach agreements themselves, either independently or perhaps through mediation. However, sometimes when agreement can simply not be reached, court may be the only option. If this occurs, then expert legal advice should be sought to assist you with this process. Court may seem daunting, but its role is to make important decisions, so that your life can move on rather than remaining in stalemate when agreements cannot be reached.

How is biology promoted outside the classroom?

The department has a long history of running some amazing foreign expeditions, working alongside research scientists to collect ecological data. We’ve monitored big cat populations in the Mexican jungle, helped with turtle conservation on the Caribbean coast and visited the famous Galápagos Islands, following in Darwin’s footsteps. We even rediscovered a reptile that was thought to be extinct in the wild. We’ve found these big adventures are amazing for developing ‘soft skills’ in our young people, such as resilience and teamwork.

How do you support more able and talented students?

We run a branch of ‘Café Scientifique’ in school for our older students, where we have an informal, thought-provoking talk delivered by a member of staff or a student followed by a casual but in-depth discussion over a cup of tea and biscuits.

Recently, we had a fantastic talk about homeopathy from the head of chemistry, which led to a discussion of medical ethics and stretched our maths skills.

Is there such thing as common-law marriage?

The very simple answer is NO. Commonlaw marriage is a myth – there are currently no laws which specifically relate to couples who choose to cohabit. If you are in a cohabiting relationship, then you do not have the same rights and future claims in respect of financial support, or against capital assets, as married couples or civil partners. If you are looking at cohabiting with a partner, then it would be worth taking specialist advice and perhaps entering into a cohabitation agreement.

What are your favourite aspects of your job?

There’s no such thing as a boring day in teaching! Every day is different. Even if you find yourself teaching the same lesson to two classes, students ask different insightful questions, which will lead you off on different tangents to explore. I love how inquisitive and keen to learn our students are and how they love a good challenge!

Inspiring drama at Stockport Grammar

Drama students at Stockport Grammar School enjoyed an inspiring visit from a theatre director, who helped them generate ideas for an upcoming performance.

Gitika Buttoo visited the school to speak to the students about her career and artistry. Gitika has directed theatre and radio nationally and was formerly the staff direc tor at the National Theatre. Her most

recent credits include Road by Jim Cartwright at the Oldham Coliseum and The Jungle Book at the Storyhouse theatre in Chester.

Gitika answered many questions from the A-level group and helped them to generate ideas about how to stage their upcoming play. The Upper Sixth students are studying both Carwright’s Road and Woyzeck by George Büchner.

As part of their studies, they have been tasked with creating an original directorial concept to Büchner’s play. Gitika helped the students to recognise the themes of the play and how they could still be relevant to a modern audience.

With Gitika’s help, the students were able to generate lots of interesting ideas for their performance.

Gold medallist returns to Stockport Grammar to inspire hockey players

2022 Commonwealth gold medallist hockey player Holly Hunt returned to Stockport Grammar School (SGS) to in spire the next generation of hockey players. Holly developed her love for hockey while a pupil in the Junior School and she was just ten years old. Throughout her time at school, her love of hockey grew, and she became part of the Stockport Grammar 1st XI team that won the Girls’ Under 18 National Schools Championships in 2015.

In January, she was selected to play for the Women’s England and GB Hockey Team full time and Holly made her debut against Argentina in February 2022 –where she scored her first international goal for England. This summer, Holly played for England in the Commonwealth Games and scored the opening goal in the match against Australia. The win

gave England their first Commonwealth Games hockey gold.

Holly led training sessions for the Senior First Team and the U13s, where she im parted some of her tips for improving their skills. She was also on hand to an swer any of their questions about the sport and her life beyond SGS.

Holly said: “I had such a lovely time visit ing Stockport Grammar with the Grays team. It was amazing to go back to the place where I first learnt how to play hockey and to see lots of familiar staff faces.

“Despite the rain, we had a great time on the pitch with the Senior First Team and the U13s and I loved meeting such en thusiastic hockey players!”

King’s School Macclesfield netball hotshots

The King's School's netball hotshots are hit ting the heights on the national stage. An incredible 15 girls have earned either county, franchise or national honours, with star player Lydia Hine selected for the Eng land Roses Academy. Lydia, 16, has been playing since she was just seven years old and is a tough, determined de fender and astute playmaker. She said: "Women's team sports are better than they have ever been. The Lionesses winning the Euros was fantastic and the netball and hockey teams are doing brilliantly as well.

"It is a real inspiration for girls coming up and I just want to continue to give 100 per cent, work hard, train hard and see where it takes me."

Madi Baxter is a clinical goal shooter for the under-17 Loughborough Lightning Academy, while Hattie Usher has been selected for Cheshire under13s and Manchester Thunder U13 squad. Lottie Baxter, Madi's younger sister, is playing for both Cheshire under-13s and Manchester Thunder U13s.

Lottie said: "It's great having a sister who plays netball. We practice against each other in the garden and occasionally, I will win, but she's very good."

Minty Kight has been selected for the under-17 Manchester Thunder squad; Bea Worlock plays for Staffordshire under-15s and the Loughborough Lightning franchise;

Aimee Venables is in the Cheshire under-17 squad; and Daisy Sutton continues to play above her age group for Cheshire under-17s. Minnie Farooq has been selected for Che shire under-13s and Manchester Thunder U13s; Lottie Winterton is in the Cheshire under-12s squad and Manchester Thunder U12s; Eva Sheppard is in the Che shire under-12s and Manchester Thunder U12 development squad; while Anvita Lal wani and Naina Vasireddy have both been selected for the Cheshire under12s squad.

Also receiving call-ups are Esme Sutton for the Cheshire under-15s and Manchester Thunder; Cheshire under-13s and Manchester Thunder U13 player Lola Bian chi; and Manchester Thunder under14s star Lalli Brown.

This is a show guaranteed to shake off those Christmas cobwebs! It’s the 1800s. It’s party time. Let the ruthless match making begin. Direct from its triumph in

the West End, where it won the Laurence Olivier Award, this is a unique and audacious retelling of Jane Austen’s most iconic love story. Men, money and microphones will be fought over in this irreverent but affectionate adaptation, where the stakes couldn’t be higher when it comes to romance.

Mamma Mia! has to be one of the sunniest musicals around; set on a gorgeous Greek island, it is just the tonic for dark winter nights. This smash-hit musical features the music of Abba with a soundtrack packed with hit songs full of foot-tapping joy!

BLING IS BACK

Cast your mind back to the decade before last: before Instagram influencers, we had Paris Hilton. Every song in the charts featured Pharrell. The word ‘bling’ entered the common parl ance via Jay-Z and MTV, and the ultimate in-your-face status vehicle was the Hummer. Usually in bright yellow.

Also, around the same time, car writers were losing their minds because the most extreme production car of all time had just come out. The 2005 Bugatti Veyron featured – among its unprece dented facts and figures – the unimaginable promised land of a thousand horsepower.

Now, times have changed. Sales figures declined for the old-style Hummer, not least for its single-digit miles per gallon figures. But the market for in-your-face bling never died. So, imagine a new Hummer (electric, of course) with a thousand horsepower.

Sounds insane, but I can confirm it exists. The new GMC Hummer EV Pickup has more than 350 miles of zero-emission range and with 1,000hp and 1,200lb-ft torque, it can hit 60mph in just 3.3 seconds – which, until recently, was elite supercar territory.

Alongside this crazy power and speed, it also has all the capabilities of a proper supertruck, such as expansive seating for five plus bags of cargo space, four-wheel steering and an optional ‘extract’ mode, which allows the entire truck to raise around 15cm, while the air suspension also works to optimise aerodynamics by lowering the car at motorway speeds.

Needless to say, Hummer customers aren’t looking for a discreet or compact vehicle – and this one doesn’t disappoint. It’s massive – measuring 2.0m high, 2.34m wide, and more than 5.5m long.

And finally, Hummer buyers aren’t looking for something cheap and cheerful. Those wanting something exclusive and reassuringly expensive will be delighted to hear that, thanks to high demand, global production issues and the current sterling/dollar exchange rate, you can expect to pay around £320,000 on-the-road for one of these.
