With the bountiful Chesapeake Bay to our north and the mighty Atlantic Ocean to our east, seafood is a way of life here.
Virginia Beach, our culinary scene has been shaped by our surrounding waters With the bountif ul Chesapeake Bay to our north and the mighty Atlantic Ocean to our east, seafood is a way of life here As the largest natural estuary in the United States, the Chesapeake Bay is home to 348 species of finfish, including flounder, sea bass, tautog and the localfavorite, rockfish As fun to catch as they are to eat, 70 to 90 percent of the world’s rockfish, also known as striped bass, reside in the waters of the Bay, making Virginia Beach the “Rockfish Capital of the World ” With the Bay producing nearly 500 million pounds of seafood each year, it’s no wonder we can’t get enough
As the high heat of summer is cooled by the crisp winds of autumn, our hunger for seafood reaches epic proportions With some of our favorite fish reaching peak season, our local seafood joints are turning out some of the freshest dishes around The Rudee Inlet, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, is a hub of unbeatable seafood options in our coastal city Rudee’s Restaurant and Cabana Bar, Rockafeller’s, and Big Sam’s all overlook the inlet and each offer a unique take on fresh seafood pulled straight from the Chesapeake Bay, like Big Sam’s Hot Blue Crab Dip or Rudee’s Fresh Catch of the Day served-up Chesapeake Style, topped with jumbo lump crabmeat, Smithfield ham, and Bearnaise Sauce
Virginia Beach is also home to the mouthwatering blue crab, a local staple that can’t be topped – except, of course, with a healthy pour of melted butter Margie & Rays Crabhouse, in the Sandbridge District, makes local blue crab their business - serving out fresh, Chesapeake Bay crab cakes and a she-crab soup that is frequently voted as the best in the region at our Annual She-Crab Soup Festival As the She-Crab Soup Capital of the World, that’s quite an accomplishment in Virginia Beach!
As if the full bounty of the sea and the Bay weren’t enough, there are also our oysters – beautifully harvested Lynnhaven oysters Once coveted around the world and served to presidents and royalty for their size, saltiness and gentle zing, these delicious little bivalves are being harvested in the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach, an offshoot of the Chesapeake Bay Captain John Smith himself described the bounty of the area when he and his shipmates spent three days in Virginia Beach before moving inland to establish Jamestown in 1607, surviving primarily off fish, oysters and turtles - an experience he described in his logs: “Oysters lay as thick as stones, with the Bay and rivers containing more sturgeon than could be devoured by dog or man ”
Local ostreophage and oyster farmer extraordinaire, Chris Ludford, owner of Pleasure House Oysters and former Virginia Beach firefighter, is cultivating the Lynnhaven oyster and doing his part to bring them back to their days of royalty The amount of care and attention that each individual oyster gets shines through in its complex and divine flavor profile From seed to plate, this process takes two years, and Chris is there every step of the way to nurture their growth and to make sure he is producing the best oysters he possibly can Visitors can hop aboard a tour of Ludford’s farm and even taste the oysters plucked straight from the water in the cooler months when the water is cold enough to ensure safe eating
In the place where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay, seafood is king Plan a trip to Virginia Beach and see for yourself !
T, beautiful land in the country It is said that the nickname came about during the War of 1812, when volunteer soldiers came from Tennessee to assist troops Beyond the history of the war, Tennessee actually has a lot of cool places to hang out in, thanks in big part to the musical influence that has grown throughout the land
Tennessee is considered to be the birthplace of several genres of music, so if your love of music is just as great as your love of history, a trip to this state is for you Start off by visiting places like Memphis and Nashville to get your music fix Nashville is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Grand Ole Opry, which is widely known as “The Show that Made Country Music Famous ”
Keep an eye out for the roots of Rock & Roll, arguably found in Memphis There are well over 100 iconic names in music that all come from the state and Memphis is one city that showcases a bit of history on them all
Take a step back in time while you visit one of the city’s many museums, such as the Rock n ’ Soul Museum, Stax Museum, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame The Blues Hall of Fame alone notes more than 400 names that all brought something to the blues industry, whether it be in full albums, nearly-lost singles, or literature itself
The Stax Museum is actually the original site of Stax Records, which went bankrupt and closed up in the mid-1970s The area, widely known for its soul music, was dubbed Soulsville USA, and that was the nickname Stax Records gave their studio This, in large part, was to counteract Motown Records, who called themselves Hitsville USA
“Tennessee is considered to be the birthplace of several genres of music, so if your love of music is just as great as your love of history, a trip to this state is for you.”
After Stax, head on over to Elvis’s Graceland Graceland provides an inside look at the life of “The King,” and highlights his accomplishments, family life, and personal aspirations The estate itself has been dubbed the “most famous Rock & Roll residence” in the nation Prepare to view a wide variety of assets and memorabilia from the star, including his impressive collection of cars, the family tomb, and a tour of his home and music room
After you ’ ve listened to your fair share of Rock & Roll, Blues, Soul, and Country hits, check out Dollywood in Pigeon Forge Dollywood brings in fun for the whole family with the water park and theme park that cater to all ages Dollywood is a stone’s throw from the Great Smoky Mountains, as well, so the entire area has enough activities to fill an entire season witho ut rest
For a more unique vacation idea, plan a visit to The Bell Witch Cave The Bell Witch Cave is located in Adams, Tennessee, and is host to the famous legend of the Bell Witch The witch was said to be invisible to most, and she is widely known as the sole cause of terror and abuse to the Bell family back in the early 1800s
Legend has it that she eventually killed the head of the household, John Bell, but only after she spent many nights terrorizing the family with eerie noises throughout their house
While exploring one day, a group of children came upon the cave and one fell down a dark hole within the caverns Bursting into panic, the children screamed and tried to help, when they heard the voice of none other than the Bell Witch herself saying, “I’ll get him out!” So she did, and the child was saved Why she terrorized the Bell family, or even if it were truly her, known one really knows, but to this day, the cave still remains quite a popular attraction Visitors have reported a variety of strange phenomena within the cave, and reviews call it “the scariest place in Tennessee ”
If you simply want to appreciate the land itself, then do not miss the Great Smoky Mountains National Park This park is the most visited national park in the United States With over 10 million people flocking to the park every year, it beats out both Yellowstone and Yosemite by nearly triple
the amount of visitors The park sits on the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, which is a part of Blue Ridge, and both extend as a division of the greater Appalachian Mountains In the center of the park, you’ll find the border that separates North Carolina and Tennessee The park’s area is over 500,000 acres, and is home to a variety of wildlife
The vast differences in elevation throughout the mountain ranges make for great diversity among the park’s inhabitants Because the park has both a subtropical lowland climate, and old growth forests with steep slopes and cooler temperatures, animal sightings can range from a black bear to a bat, depending on where you ’ re at in the park
Towns that surround the park boast museums, landmarks, handcrafted souvenirs, events, lodging, park tours, and a variety of other adventures, so be sure to check out all of the attractions in the area Gatlinburg, Tennessee is one of the closest cities on the border, and they welcome visitors year-round The park
“Take a hike or go for a bike ride on one of the many different trails that usually lead to a spectacular endpoint with a view fit for a picnic and fantastic pictures.”
You’ll find a lot of things you may not expect in a mid-size city like Clarksville, Tennessee: a thriving arts community, grand historic architecture, a significant military history, and an incredible variety of amazing food!
The influence of the Fort Campbell Army Post, Austin Peay State University and international industries like Hankook, LG, Bridgestone and more, gives Clarksville’s food scene a surprisingly global flair
Still, no worries for travelers looking for a traditional Southern food experience – the city is true to its roots with plenty of down-home Southern fare
Along the iconic and historic Franklin Street, you’ll find an eclectic collection of favorites like Roux AmeriCajun, Black-
horse Brewery & Pub, Hot Pita, and Edward’s Steakhouse
One block over, new restaurant and brewery Strawberry Alley Ale Works joined the lineup with made-from-scratch recipes, original beer selections brewed in-house, craft cocktails and top-quality wines
Moving away from the downtown core, Silke’s Old World Breads offers fresh German meats and cheeses, along with made-daily-from-scratch breads and pastries Smokin Chikin infuses gourmet rotisserie chicken with herbs and spices from around the globe, creating unforgettable flavor
For a seat with a view, enjoy large-portion American entrees at Liberty Park Grill overlooking the Clarksville Marina at the Cumberland River Take the bridge across the river and enjoy The Catfish House, offering down-home Southern-style sides and desserts
Broaden your palette in the direction of the Army Post with authentic Indian, Mexican, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and more
You won’t lack for liquid refreshment with options like Old Glory Distilling’s whiskey, bourbon, rum and vodka Plus, four craft breweries serve a diverse selection of artisan beverages
Beachaven Vineyards and Winery is a trailblazer in Tennessee winemaking They’ve been filling goblets with awardwinning wines for more than 30 years
And, you simply cannot leave town without a rolled ice cream!
Enjoy all the individuality and hard work that these chefs pride themselves on, and give their restaurants a try. You ’ll agree with our decision to put them in the spotlight

Chef Charles Draghi and his restaurant, Erbaluce, are centered in the Bay Village area of Boston, Massachusetts Chef Draghi has been rooted in Boston for many years, and is very well-known for putting a modern, herb-infused spin on traditional Italian cuisine Draghi hones in on Piemontese flavors, and pairs freshly grown herbs and spices with seasonal, high-quality ingredients for a savory combination that never ceases to amaze his customers.
Contemporary, yet comforting, his dishes offer up both intellectual criticisms and heartwarming feelgood meals alike
In an interview with Haute Living, Draghi explains one of his signature dishes: The roasted rack of wild boar with a handful of wild Concord grapes, fermented with lavender branches A favorite for the past 12 years and standing, Draghi says that the secret is that the meat comes from a feral animal, rather than a farm-raised boar The “steak-like texture is very satisfying, and subtly haunting; a primal flavor that is unlike any other meat ”
Draghi’s restaurant, Erbaluce, has received many awards and nominations, including its 6th “Best Italian Restaurant” from Improper Bostonian Magazine A quote from Robert Nadeau explains the very core of what makes Draghi’s cuisine so unique: “Draghi’s food builds sauces from vegetables and their essences, rather than butter, olive oil, or cream So even with a rich dessert, one will be able to continue with a night out on the town after eating here Amid many fine restaurants near the Theater District, this is one of the most distinctive ” – Robert Nadeau, The Boston Phoenix
The menu changes nightly at Erbaluce, depending on what Chef Draghi feels like playing with, and what’s in season Dining at Erbaluce means ordering razor clams with fennel, garlic, and green peppercorns one night, and then trying braised sunflowers with herbed ricotta and a raisin-caper vinaigrette the next The point of every dish is to taste the freshness of each ingredient, without having to bridge the gaps in a rich, heavy sauce His classical French culinary training, paired with his gastro-chemistry influence, makes Chef Draghi a sight for sore eyes among the inventive and novice foodie community Learn more at erbaluce-boston com

Nestled between the banks of the Hudson River and the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains lies one of the gems of the Hudson Valley Columbia County, NY Long before Henry Hudson sailed up the river that bears his name, the county was home to Native American Mohicans Hudson’s discovery led to the Dutch settling in Hudson and Stuyvesant; the Palatine Germans in Germantown, and the English, the Scots, and New England Whalers near Spencertown and Ancram The county’s history is culturally rich and historically diverse Over 50 heritage sites steeped in Revolutionary and Civil War history and homesteads of political luminaries such as the 8th President of the United States, Martin Van Buren and signer of the Declaration of Independence, Robert Livingston, make Columbia County an attraction for heritage visitors Nineteenth century fine artists, Thomas Cole and Fredric Church, established what is known as the Hudson River School of painting, capturing the breathtaking beauty and vast vistas within the county and beyond Their homesteads, Church’s Moorish inspired masterpiece, Olana, and the Thomas Cole House are both open to the public and are popular tourist sites
The city of Hudson has enjoyed a robust renaissance as a small city with big city flair In the early 90’s, antique dealers fleeing high rents in New York City came and pioneered the change that has made it the vibrant, eclectic, entrepreneurial place it is today Art dealers followed as did the unique boutiques that add to the city’s charm With so much fertile farmland within the county, it was only natural that the farm-to-table movement would put Columbia County on the map as a food and beverage resource
Family farms have long been supplying meat, produce, fruit, and dairy products to the New York City market Farm-to-table is not just a catch phrase here It is a way of life
The past 10 years has seen a boom in dining options Chefs and restauranteurs migrated from the New York City area lured by abundance of locallysourced, quality products Zagat-rated establishments fill the county and make it a “foodie’s delight” destination Whether it be a casual café, vintage diner, fine dining restaurant or hip and happening spot to enjoy a custom IPA or craft cocktail, there is something to tantalize every taste bud Artisanal beverage producers also hand-craft beer, wine, spirits and hard ciders from locally grown hops, wheat, grapes, and apples Tasting events along the beverage trail offer an educational and delicious activity to be enjoyed throughout the year History, art, food and fun make Columbia County the perfect getaway For more information, visit wwwcolumbiacountytourism org

If you ’ re in search for a dive with great bar food and a lively atmosphere, a BBQ joint in western Montana that serves up southern classics, or a farm-to-table experience with local farmers and artisans, you ’ ve come to the right place. We’ve got all that and more in this edition of Good Eats!
Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the natural landscapes that Montana offers, all in the beautiful college town of Missoula, where the University of Montana proudly stands The university itself is Missoula’s largest employer, and the community thrives off of its economic health Along with the landscapes and the economic security, the college life here is vibrant, fun, and engaging Missoula has been ranked as a top college town for all the right reasons, but we ’ re mainly here for the food and drinks!
All the locals and the college students love to hang out at Charlie B’s, also known as Charlie’s Bar or simply Charlie’s. People here can be seen slamming back a nice shot of whiskey, or sipping on a local craft brew The Bar is also connected to the beloved Dinosaur Café, which is famous for serving up Cajun cuisine, despite their Montana location Regulars will tell anyone that the food is quite good, and fresh to boot! Charlie B’s and the Dinosaur Café are inexpensive, quaint, casual, and locally-loved. This relaxed atmosphere is where everyone comes to grab a good bite to eat or a drink with friends, and Charlie B’s has actually been named in the media several times, including Esquire’s “15 Bars You Should Drink in Before You Die ”
For an exceptional meal on a special occasion, or just when you feel like leaving the bar scene, head to the Red Bird restaurant on North Higgins The Red Bird has an elegant and inviting atmosphere, dripping with gold accents and warm undertones of red and chocolate brown The ambience is regal and the food is to die for! All of the Red Bird’s produce is as fresh as it gets, and the meats are locally-sourced and butchered in house, so each meal comes to your table with the most intense flavor combinations to suit your palate Our suggestion? Try a market-priced cut of Montana raised lamb, served with wild rice pilaf and slow-cooked green beans
Ithaca is a magical foodie town that just so happens to be home to two colleges, Cornell University and Ithaca College – at least that’s the way we see it When school is in session, the town’s population nearly doubles, and students make up the majority of the people in Ithaca This however, should not be a deterrent, because Ithaca is more fo cused on remaining a foodie town than a party haven The hometown bar scene and the music-driven atmosphere is more what Ithaca is about Concerts, festivals, and street theaters make for fun things to do while you ’ re out and about
As for the food, Ithaca is home to Taste of Thai Express restaurant, which is certainly buzzworthy as the top restaurant to visit for the booming Thai cuisine industry within the area Taste of Thai Express caters to students and the youth, making reservations for graduating parties a breeze and ordering online a cinch, but it also caters to all the locals who are just as in love with the place as everyone else is Taste of Thai Express is extremely authentic and traditional in its menu, offering up cultural classics like Pad Thai, which is a stir-fried noodle dish in a tamarind sauce, served with tofu Kan, eggs, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts, chives, and lime wedges If you like spice, try the Panang Curry, which is a creamy spiced red curry sauce infused with Thai herbs and served over sliced cabbage with your choice of meat
The seasonal Italian-based menu at Mercato Bar & Kitchen keeps everyone in town coming back Mercato is chef-owned and provides beautiful menu items, along with speciallycrafted cocktails to quench your thirst The restaurant is located on Ithaca’s “Restaurant Row,” which should also tell you how much of a foodie town this city is Dinner at Mercato is served from 5:30pm-10pm, and includes choices such as Paccheri with white Bolognese, asparagus, ricotta, & goat cheese Mezzelune, or pan-seared Day Boat scallops Delish!

This satisfaction is deri ved largely from stops at uniquely delectable dining destinations An exciting variety of downtown restaurants – Harry’s, Bourbon & Baker and Tallgrass Taphouse – produce a charming landscape The Taphouse is a craft beer sensation with regionally acclaimed Tallgrass pints on tap and food that does more than just complement the hearty drink flavor On the Taphouse menu, meatloaf is far from mundane, serv ed with beef/pork blend and sprinkled with peppered bacon and side of roasted garlic mashed taters Tantalizing! The Chinese have had 5,000 years to perfect ginseng, the root known today as an edible and rejuvenating herb But just a century ago, a town in North Central Wisconsin quietly developed the gold standard, drawing the respect of discerning connoisseurs from China and around the world
Welcome to Marathon County, where the second annual International Wisconsin Ginseng Festival takes place September 14-16, 2018 The three-day celebration will be held at downtown Wausau’s 400 Block city square park, promising bold flavors in myriad executions, exciting arts and entertainment, and plenty of ginseng-fueled activities
While Wisconsin is best known as the nation’s largest cheese supplier, relatively few know the state produces 95 percent of the U S ginseng supply Arguably more surprising – over 85 percent of the local crop is exported to Asia
Yes, the Chinese have an insatiable appetite for ginseng grown in America’s Dairyland
To understand how a rural Midwest town became the nation’s ginseng epicenter, look back to the turn of the twentieth century A local group of brothers, the Fromms, took interest in farming the wild ginseng that grew in a nearby forest Marathon County’s long, cold winters and glacially enriched soil deliver the optimal environment for growing the prized root In a few years, the brothers turned their crop into a business Their commercial success spawned an industry and helped employ local farmers during the depression, which saved this area
Thousands of ginseng purists and those merely curious will converge from around the globe to enjoy the culmination of summer in Wausau and discover all this herb can be Ginseng is believed to boost energy, lower blood sugar and cholesterol, ease stress and even enhance men ’ s libido
“THE SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL WISCONSIN GINSENG FESTIVAL TAKES PLACE SEPTEMBER 14-16, 2018”
Festival goers will be treated to ginsengenhanced delights from ice cream to burgers, soda to locally brewed beer and wine and, given the state’s betterknown reputation, cheese curds Vendors will show off its herbal virtues in capsule form, lotions, lip balms and other creative expressions
For fun, visitors can participate in a scavenger hunt, get dirty digging their own roots and enjoy an exciting mainstage lineup The culinarily inclined can expand their repertoire at ginseng cooking demonstrations The festival also focuses on local ginseng growers and local farm-to-table fare, with some fascinating historic tours planned Events will extend onto nearby streets and throughout the county
The International Wisconsin Ginseng Festival is a community collaboration in partnership with area businesses and organizations including Baumann Ginseng Farm, Hsu’s Ginseng Enterprises, Ginseng Board of Wisconsin, Ginseng & Herb Co-Op, Travel Wisconsin, Marathon County, Wausau/Central Wisconsin Convention & Visitors Bureau, as well as many local associations and businesses
