Bringing people together since 1885

Welcome to The Salvation Army Family Tracing Service What is the aim of the Service?

To help people to trace adult living relatives with whom contact has been lost, whether recently or many years ago – and so restore family relationships.

Who can use the Tracing Service?

Anyone over the age of 18 years (16 in Scotland) can use the Service. For those under this age wishing to locate a relative, we are happy to consider a request from a parent or legal guardian on their behalf.

Who is included in the tracing programme?

We would be happy to consider any search request for a known living relative (except those identified below).

Who is not included in the tracing programme?

• We are not able to become involved in searches where adoption has taken place, due to current UK legislation. • We cannot look for children under 18 years of age, or other 'vulnerable' missing people where a physical search or police involvement would be more appropriate. • We do not look for 'possible' relatives or friends and do not carry out family history enquiries. • We do not look for relatives for estate, legal or other business purposes.

Does the Service operate only in the United Kingdom?

The Salvation Army is at work in over 120 countries, and tracing facilities are available in many of these. All enquiries to search for a family overseas should be sent to our UK address.

What information do I need to give regarding my search?

Normally we require at least a full name, age or date of birth and a last known location of the individual being sought. If insufficient detail has been given we may not be able to proceed, or we may require further clarification.

How long does it take to find someone?

Every individual case is different and so no timeframes can be given; searches can take anything from a couple of weeks to a number of years. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that we will be successful in reuniting you with your relative. Sometimes it is not possible to trace those we are seeking.

How will I know if my relative has been traced?

If we are successful in locating your relative we will let you know immediately, whatever their reaction to your enquiry.

Confidentiality

The Service is strongly committed to the principles of confidentiality.

Is there a charge for the Service?

The registration fee is £45 (£25 for those whose only income is state support). This helps towards the initial set-up costs and the verification checks which are sometimes required. It is not a service charge, and does not guarantee a positive outcome.

How do I apply to use your Service?

Before any case is taken on, an application and disclosure form must be completed. These can be obtained by contacting The Salvation Army Family Tracing Service – please see details below.
