I love seeing the birds that visit our garden. Our most frequent visitors are magpies and wood pigeons, but we get robins, redwings, blue tits, coal tits and great tits too. We once had a pair of woodpeckers nest in our cherry tree and we often see flocks of parakeets flitting overhead. We have birdfeeders in our garden, but the birds are much more interested in the berries on our holly trees and shrubs. Whenever I watch the birds feeding on berries, insects, worms and grubs, I think of Matthew 6:26–34 where Jesus talks about birds and flowers as a reminder to us not to worry. Actually, that’s just reminded me to tell you to flap along to pages 12 and 13, where you can read more about trusting God to take care of your worries and help you be the best you can be. Have a great week!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT LISTENING TO GOD AND DOING WHAT HE SAYS

No Small Parts

H

says Melita Day-Lewis

ave you ever wanted to play the leading role in a play and get the spotlight on stage? Perhaps you felt disappointed when you got a small part or had to work unseen backstage. There was a famous preacher (he died in 2018) who had a leading role on God’s ‘stage’. He told millions of people about Jesus all over the world and it’s thought about 3.2 million of them decided to follow Jesus! His name was Billy Graham. But in Billy’s story there were those who played ‘small’ roles. There was a businessman who organised a prayer meeting on Billy’s parents’ farm and an unknown evangelist who preached about Jesus at another meeting where 16-year-old Billy Graham decided to follow Jesus! If they hadn’t

played their part and done what God had asked them to do, who knows what would’ve happened? In the Bible cartoon, we discover that Ananias was super important in Saul’s story! Saul – renamed Paul – was used by God to tell thousands of people about Jesus and to write most of the New Testament! But it was Ananias’s obedience that made a huge difference. You might think you’re not very important or don’t have any special gifts. But someone who listens carefully to God and does what he says even if it seems small – like praying for a friend, telling someone about Jesus or being kind to a stranger – can be part of changing things for the better, big time! Whatever you do for God really matters!

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verses below… You are the light that gives light to the world… In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do. Live so that they will praise your Father in Heaven. Matthew 5:14 and 16 (International Children’s Bible)

hat hidden worlds lie beneath your feet? Or in the deepest parts of the ocean, where not even sunlight can reach? Get ready to go on a journey to meet everything from glowing deep-sea creatures to trillions of tiny workers that live inside your own body. But be warned, things can get a little strange in the deep! Deep: Dive Into Hidden Worlds is an illustrated non-fiction book by Jess McGeachin which takes you on a journey to the deepest parts of our universe. Temperatures are extreme, pressure is intense and darkness is everywhere. Even though these distant places seem far out of reach, we do things that have an impact on them. The lunch you eat affects the trillions of microbes living deep in your gut. The plastics we throw away have been found on the deepest parts of the ocean floor. The clues we find underground can tell stories of those who came before. If you would like to learn more about shadowy oceans, secret forests, hidden caves and even buried underground sewers, then this is the competition for you to delve into! With nature, geology, astronomy, archaeology and biology, Deep has it all! For your opportunity to win Deep: Dive Into Hidden Worlds answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 11 February when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Deep Competition’ in the subject box. Fantastic Feelings As humans, we have a lot of different emotions. Sometimes we feel happy, sad, frustrated, angry, confused, and much more. Jesus felt all of these things when he lived on Earth, so he knows what it’s like. It’s important to learn how to deal with your feelings. Here are a few different strategies to help you. You can talk to someone you trust like a friend, teacher, parent or someone at church. Talking about what you’re going through, especially with a grown-up, can help you to understand what’s going on. Other people might prefer to write things down in a journal or draw pictures.

Bible Bubble

It’s great to find a way of dealing with your feelings when things get tough – try to find out what works best for you.

This week’s Bible Bubble verses come from Philippians 4:6–7 which say, ‘Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds.’ (Easy-to-Read Version). We all have things in our lives that cause us to worry. When you’re feeling stressed and worried you might get butterflies in your tummy or a headache. You might think that if you don’t do well at school or look a certain way your life will be ruined. But that’s not true. Did you know that God doesn’t want you to worry? You don’t have to be afraid. God wants you to give him your worries and let him take care of them! He will help you to feel less afraid and he’ll help you to feel calmer.

12 KA - p12-13 - 15 January.indd 1

There are loads of other Bible verses about trusting God and not worrying. Check out Matthew 6:25–34 or 1 Peter 5:7 for more advice about not being anxious but trusting God instead.

Brilliant Brains! Your brain is amazing! It allows you to think, it controls your movements and helps to keep your body working the way it should. It is important that you look after your brain by trying to keep it healthy and thinking good thoughts. If you don’t always like the way you look or don’t feel good enough, remember you’re wonderful and you can do amazing things!

Here are some brain-teasers to help keep your brain active.

e 1 The more there is, th it? less you see. What is

2 What has a face and two hands, but no arms or legs?

3 What travels around the world, but stays in the same corner? 4 You can find it in Mercury, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, but not in Venus or Neptune. What is it?

5 People buy me to eat, but never eat me. What am I?

Answers on page 2

Your Turn! Every morning this week do these three things to help remind yourself how marvellous you are.

1 Look in the mirror and say something you like about yourself. 2 Think about how you’re feeling each morning and remember that different feelings are all right.

3 Ask God to help you with the things that you are worried about.
