Frankenstein’s creation, King Kong, the Daleks – they’re all great monsters. However, there’s one real monster that might just be greater than any other. It’s giant, it’s loud and it has wheels that are taller than most Kids Alive! readers. It’s the monster truck! Tomorrow (18 August) is the UK Monster Truck Nationals. That means that some of the biggest and meanest monster trucks will be doing what they do best. They’ll be shooting over steep ramps, launching over cars and even destroying a few buses! Based at Santa Pod Raceway, fans can expect to see old favourite monster trucks such as Big Pete and Podzilla. These monster trucks will be put to the test against a new metal monster – Big Thunder! Drivers from all around the world will compete in a wild race, as well as in a thrilling freestyle contest. Winners of each contest will get to take home a big trophy. As well as watching plenty of monster trucks in action, attendees will get to see two stunt legends put on a crazy motor show. Visitors will also get to drive their own miniature monster truck around a small course. Plus, some visitors will have a ride in a monster truck as it destroys lots of cars! It’s set to be a smashing and crashing day of fun.

Monster trucks are so big and powerful. The way they can fly through the air and crush cars is seriously impressive! During the time Jesus was on Earth, lots of people expected him to be a bit like a monster truck. They were expecting this big and powerful king who would crash into their lives and crush the bad guys. However, Jesus didn’t behave like they were expecting. He was powerful and did incredible things, but he wasn’t the giant warrior they thought he would be. He didn’t want to fight – he wanted to love and help people. Jesus told people that he came to Earth to serve them, not for them to serve him. He even gave up his life so that everyone could be forgiven for anything that they do wrong and have a close relationship with God. Now I think that’s more impressive than anything a monster truck or giant warrior can do!

God Doing Things Differently

Baby Moses

Check out your Bible – Genesis 47:5-6; Exodus 1:8-10; 2:3-10

IRead the comment below about how God looked after baby Moses

How Did Jochebed Feel?

’ll never forget the first time I held my niece. She was fast asleep. When I looked at her, I felt so much love. I also wondered what her future would be like. Most of all, I hoped she would have a happy life!

I wonder what Moses’ mum, Jochebed, thought when she held baby Moses before sending him down the River Nile. I imagine it was one of the saddest moments of her life. However, I also believe that she had hope for Moses’ future. Even in the most difficult situation Jochebed had ever been in, she still had faith in God. She knew that God had a plan for Moses.

Moses’ basket could have sunk in the river. It could have been attacked by Nile crocodiles. Instead, the basket made it to Pharaoh’s palace!

After arriving at the palace, terrible things could have happened to Moses. Instead, he was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter!

Moses’ journey wasn’t successful because of good luck! It was successful because God was looking after him. God had an amazing plan for Moses’ future and he used even the most difficult of situations to help make that happen.

Is there anything happening in your life that feels really difficult? Maybe it’s something really big that’s happening or maybe it’s something that’s really small. Know that God loves you as much as he loved Moses. He’s got a plan for you, even if things are really hard right now. So have hope, just like Jochebed did.

Moses’ basket is taking a wild river journey. Help it to reach Pharaoh’s palace without meeting any crocodiles! asks Jacob Adams

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Elisha’s Miracles

God used Elisha to perform loads of miracles. He cleaned a dirty water spring with just a sprinkle of salt. He healed a man who had a disease called leprosy. Elisha even brought a dead boy back to life!

During this time, Israel fought with lots of other kingdoms. Once, when the Israelites marched to battle, they ran out of anything to drink. Elisha prayed to God and the next morning the valley was full of water!

Still some people didn’t like Elisha. One king even wanted to kill him! However, God looked after Elisha. Elisha could even see an army of horses and flaming chariots protecting him!

When Elisha eventually died, Israel had well and truly turned away from God. However, Elisha had never stopped following him. He was so blessed by God that when he died his bones were powerful enough to bring somebody back to life!

Check out these pyramids! Don’t they look like they’re rising off the page? They’re not – you wouldn’t be able to close your copy of Kids Alive! if they were! This is an illusion created by the lines and shapes.

icture this – you’re about to slurp down a fizzy drink. The can’s been in the fridge so it’s as chilly as a penguin. Perfect. You pull the tab on the can and … WHOOSH! The can explodes like it’s a volcano, shooting a foamy, sticky shower all over you! As you wipe fizzy drink out of your eyes, you realise that someone must have shaken the can.

Although getting sprayed with fizzy drink isn’t much fun, getting sprayed with water definitely is – especially when it’s a sunny day! In a game called Drench Soda, a soda can is filled with water. Players take turns shaking the can based on the number they roll on a dice. Once it’s their turn to pull the tab, they’ll risk getting absolutely drenched! The can could go off at any time so it’s the last to stay dry that wins.

For your opportunity to win your own Drench Soda Game, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Remember to put ‘Drench Soda Competition’ in the subject box. Your entry needs to reach us by Friday 13 September when the winners will be chosen. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Drench Soda Competition, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ.

Back to School

If you live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, you might be scratching your head wondering why this KA! World is about school when it’s only August. Going back to school might feel about as far away as Christmas!

However, if you live in Scotland you might have already gone back – or you’ll be going back very soon. This means there’s no better time to give all our Kids Alive! readers some school-related tips – even if it’s a little bit early for some of you!

School’s Cool!

The thought of going back to school might have you jumping for joy. Or it might give you a knot in your tummy. Whatever your feelings are about school, it’s actually really good for you!

When you go to school, you get to learn important skills. These are skills that you’ll use in the future, even when you’re a grown-up.

You’ll also learn about fascinating things, such as the Great Fire of London or what plants need to survive! Plus, school is also a great place to make friends!

Schools Around the World

It’s not just kids in the United Kingdom that go to school! Here are some facts about schools in different countries.

China Finland United States of America

Kids in China don’t start school until they’re aged six! However, once they’re old enough to go, school keeps them very busy. It often starts at about 7.30am and finishes at 6pm!

Kids in Finland start school at the age of seven! They barely have any homework or tests, and they (pardon the pun) ‘finnish’ school in between 2pm and 2.45pm!

Kids in the USA don’t have to wear a school uniform! To get to school, they often take a big yellow bus.

Before School Starts

If you live in Scotland and you’ve already gone back to school, here are some tips for how to be at your best on Monday morning. If you’re still on your summer holiday, then follow these tips to have the very best first day back!

Make sure you complete any homework that’s been set.

Get your school bag ready. If you need to take a pencil case to school, make sure you’ve got everything you need.

If you’re feeling anxious about going back to school, talk to a parent or carer. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with feeling nervous or worried!

If you’re going to a new school, make sure you know the way to get there – especially if you’re walking on your own. Walking to the new school with your parents or carers a few times before school starts might help you to remember the way!

Super School Tips

Here are some tips for how to have a brilliant day at school.

Start the day right! Make sure you get up with plenty of time to get ready for school. Then have a healthy breakfast. If you can, walk to school instead of having a parent or carer drive you there!

Catch up with your friends. Whether you’ve seen them all through the holidays or haven’t seen them in about six weeks, it’s great to spend time with your friends!

Get to know your new teachers! If you’re feeling nervous about the new school year, getting to know your teachers might help you to feel a bit better.

Try to keep positive. You’re going to learn plenty of wonderful things and hopefully make lots of great memories with your friends. Plus, it will be Christmas before you know it!

We hope you have a fantastic time going back to school!
