Food Fortnight

What’s your favourite thing to eat? We think it’s hard to fnd a meal that beats a Sunday roast. A slice of juicy meat, roast potatoes, plenty of veg and a Yorkshire pudding – how could it get better than that?

Not only is a roast dinner absolutely scrumptious – it also uses lots of crops that are produced in Britain!

Yesterday (20 September) was the start of British Food Fortnight 2024, which ends on 6 October. During the next two weeks, people will be celebrating all the tasty food that’s made in Britain. They’ll also be using British ingredients to cook up their own mouth-watering meals!

Communities all around the country will be taking part. Some schools will hold special lessons and restaurants will put together amazing menus. There’ll even be a few food festivals! Plus, lots of towns and villages will be coming up with their own ways to celebrate!

Why not take part in British Food Fortnight yourself? With the help of your parents or carers, you could try growing your own fruit and veg. You could also team up with a few friends to try to cook a delicious meal using only British ingredients! You could even try making your own roast dinner.

During British Food Fortnight, lots of people will be celebrating harvest. If you want to find out more about harvest, then turn to pages 12 and 13 of the very comic you’re holding right now!

I don’t know about you, but my mouth was watering loads while reading about British Food Fortnight! It all sounds so delicious. There are so many fantastic foods that farmers in the UK produce and British Food Fortnight is the perfect time to munch on as many tasty treats as possible!

During British Food Fortnight it’s also a great opportunity to thank farmers for all their hard work. Funnily enough it’s also World Gratitude Day today (21 September), so I’m feeling especially grateful to farmers. Thank you, farmers!

Of course, there’s someone else we should thank for all our delicious food too. Farmers put in many hours of hard work sowing seeds and collecting the harvest, but they also need things such as sunshine and rain. Those bits come from God, so thank you, God! Now I’m off to tuck into something yummy while I show my gratitude for our fabulous food!

Jesus Heals Jairus’s Daughter

Check out your Bible –Mark 5:21–24, 28–43

Read the comment below about Jesus healing people

Oh Happy Day!

Do you love reading stories that have a happily ever after ending? If you do, then you’re in for a treat, because this week’s Bible cartoon has not one but two happy endings!

The story starts with Jairus whose 12-year-old daughter was very ill. As a parent, I can understand how worried Jairus must have felt. If my son was seriously sick, I would do anything to make sure he got better. And that’s what Jairus did. He went to the only person he believed could help – Jesus!

But in a strange turn of events, there was someone else who was desperately ill and also looking for Jesus. We don’t know her name, but we do know she was a woman with a lot of faith. So much so that she believed just touching a tiny part of Jesus’ clothing would be enough to make

her better. And guess what? It did!

But then news arrived that Jairus’s daughter had died. If I was Jairus, I know I would feel devastated. However, Jesus encouraged Jairus not to be afraid but to believe. Then he did something incredible – Jesus brought Jairus’s daughter back to life!

What a happy day indeed! The lady and Jairus probably felt over the moon. Despite the roller coaster of emotions – including worry, fear, hope and sadness – both Jairus and the lady experienced the tender love and care of Jesus. Is there anyone you know who needs a miracle? Do you believe Jesus can help? Why not ask Jesus to show them that he loves and cares for them too?

Rebuilding the Temple

There used to be a powerful kingdom called Babylonia. Then another kingdom called Persia took over! The king of Persia, a guy called Cyrus, got rid of the Babylonian king. Cyrus was the boss now. The Jews (who came from Judah) had been held captive in Babylon for 70 years when Cyrus took over. Rather than keep the Jews as captives, Cyrus let them return to Jerusalem!

Although a few Jews decided to stay in Babylon, around 50,000 Jews returned to Judah! Led by a man called Zerubbabel, the Jews got to work. First they rebuilt the altar of the Lord so that they could make sacrifces to God. Then they got to work on rebuilding the Temple. Other nations tried to make life diffcult for the Jews, but the Jews were determined to follow God! So eventually, after lots of hard work, a new Temple was built!

Harvest

Have you ever taken part in a harvest festival? In late September and early October, churches often put on special services for harvest. Lots of schools will also put on harvest assemblies.

If you go to a harvest festival, you’ll probably see big piles of food. People will also bring food donations for others who need them.

That’s all well and good, but you might be wondering what harvest festivals are actually about.

What Is Harvest?

Harvest is a celebration of all the crops that have been harvested (that means collected) from our felds throughout the year. It’s also an opportunity to give thanks to God for looking after us!

What Do We Harvest?

Did you know that more than 300 different types of crops are grown in the United Kingdom? In some felds, potatoes are grown in the soil. In other felds, thousands of strawberries are produced in strawberry patches.

If you visit a feld or greenhouse, you might fnd rows upon rows of wheat, or tomatoes sprouting from vines! All these crops are harvested, which means that they end up in our supermarkets, fridges and tummies.

Harvest History

Harvest festivals have been taking place all around the world for a very long time. In fact, people even celebrated harvest festivals in the Bible!

The Israelites would take part in the Feast of Weeks, which celebrated the start of harvesting crops. They also had the Feast of Ingathering, which celebrated the end of harvest.

Up until the 1800s, we didn’t really have harvest festivals in the UK. Then a vicar called Robert Hawker introduced the idea. He thought that it was important to give thanks to God for all the food that grew in the UK’s felds.

Give Thanks

We celebrate harvest with harvest festivals because we want to give thanks to God for providing us with all the food that we eat –even Brussels sprouts!

However, harvest festivals are also a great opportunity to thank God for everything else he does for us. We should thank God for…

The water that we drink.

The homes that we live in.

Our friends and family.

The clothes that we wear.

Always being with us, no matter where we go.

Sending Jesus to save us.

We can give thanks to God by praying to him. When someone does something nice for you, you probably say thank you to them. In the same way, it’s great to say thank you to God.

Give Back

Another way of giving thanks to God is by showing love to others. So you could say thanks to God by…

Donating food to a food bank! You could ask your parents or carers to donate food, or you could save up pocket money to buy some food to give away. Lots of supermarkets have food donation boxes, or you could take donations to a harvest festival.

Growing your own food to give away! You could grow a few crops in your garden, or even in a pot on your windowsill. Then you could share what you grow with your friends and family.

Putting together a harvest supper for friends and family! If you’ve read page 3 of this week’s issue, you’ll have learnt about British Food Fortnight. Why not use some crops grown in Britain to treat your family to a tasty dinner?

Patch’s Harvest Festival

Patch has gathered his own crops to put on a harvest festival. He’s collected a purple carrot, a green tomato and a red cabbage, but he’s lost them on these pages. Draw a line from each of Patch’s crops to the basket to help Patch get ready for his festival.

Celebrate harvest by giving thanks and giving back!
