Ayear after England’s Lionesses managed an historic Women’s Euros win, they’re battling again with superstars from around the globe. It’s time for the FIFA Women’s World Cup! The action began on 20 July and this year the World Cup has headed down under as it’s hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The USA are probably the favourites to win, but their recent losses to England, Germany and Spain suggest there might not be a third successive World Cup title for the Americans. It’s a particularly exciting time for the Republic of Ireland who have quali ed for the Women’s World Cup for the rst time. They played their rst match on Thursday (20 July) against co-hosts Australia and will also go up against Nigeria and Canada in Group B. England will be playing in Group D with Haiti, Denmark and China. Their rst match is against Haiti today (22 July) at Brisbane Stadium –kick-off is at 10.30am UK time. Millie Bright will be captaining the Lionesses, but other stars to keep an eye out for include Sam Kerr playing for Australia, Alex Morgan starring for the USA and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw lining up for Jamaica. Who will make it all the way to the nal on 20 August?
TV coverage of the Women’s World Cup will be split between BBC and ITV in the UK. In the Republic of Ireland coverage will be on RTÉ Sport.
I’m really excited about the Women’s World Cup. However, I’ve been working so hard getting this week’s issue of your favourite weekly read together I haven’t managed to catch a game yet. I am really looking forward to watching England roar into action today, though!
I’ve heard that after the Lionesses’ success at the Euros last year, loads of girls and women joined their local football clubs, which is brilliant news. Being part of the beautiful game by actively joining in and playing has to be better than just watching.
I’m reminded of a number of stories in Acts when Jesus’ friends (known as the apostles) talked and lived in such a way that people just couldn’t wait to join the Early Church and live the way Jesus encouraged people to live. What can you do this week that will encourage others to join in and live Jesus’ way?

Strictly Belonging
Are you a Strictly Come Dancing fan? Even if you’re not you might be aware of the ‘silent’ dance performed by Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice. You can nd a clip on YouTube by googling ‘Strictly Rose Giovanni Symphony’.
Rose was the rst-ever deaf contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. During Rose and Giovanni’s performance to ‘Symphony’ there’s a moment when the music falls silent. At this point the audience can only hear a very faint rumble, which represents what Rose hears. It was a very powerful moment that gave a tiny insight into a deaf person’s world. Rose’s inclusion on Strictly and that dance made a huge impact, and changed the way

by Justin Reevesmillions of people think about and behave towards the deaf community.
In this week’s cartoon Bible story we see a deaf man whose friends came up with a plan to get him to Jesus. Once again, we see Jesus include and help someone who felt like they didn’t belong. The actions of the man’s friends and Jesus changed the deaf man’s life for ever.
Sticking your ngers in another person’s ears and spitting before you touch their tongue is not the way to make them feel like they belong. But you can follow the example of Jesus and the deaf man’s friends by doing whatever you can to include people. How can you be like Jesus and what can you do to help everyone belong?
If your kids’ group follows The Salvation Army’s ‘Explore It!’ material, you’ll be encouraged to learn some British Sign Language in this week’s session. Use the key below to work out what the BSL message below says.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!
The Creation of NASA
After the Soviet Union (a collection of countries run by Russia) had successfully launched two satellites into space, some Americans were not happy. They thought the United States of America should be leading the space race. That’s when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, better known as NASA, was formed.
Groups of specialists and engineers with different skills joined one organisation to work together to develop new rockets and satellites. On 29 July 1958, President Dwight D Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 making NASA an of cial organisation. The creation of NASA made the USA more effective in the space race, and they went on to launch more satellites and rockets into space.

Summer Safety
Do you enjoy the sunny weather that (hopefully!) comes in the summer? It’s lovely to have a dip in the water when it’s hot, but it’s important to stay safe too. Then you can make the most of the wonderful sunny season.
Wild Swimming
Some people love swimming outdoors, which is often called wild swimming. Although it sounds fun, there are risks. There can be abandoned shopping trolleys or broken glass in rivers, lakes, lochs or loughs. Riverbanks can be slippery and hard to climb out of and there could be reeds or other plant life that you get tangled in. River currents can also be faster than you think and water illnesses or blue-green algae can make you poorly.
Some areas of water, such as canals and reservoirs, are not safe places for anyone to swim. So if you’re walking near them, stay well back from the water’s edge. Swimming at lifeguarded beaches or lidos is a safer option for outdoor swimming. If you go swimming always go with someone else and make sure a grown-up who can swim is watching you.
Cold Water Shock
One of the biggest risks of wild swimming is cold water shock. Anything below 15°C is considered cold water, so in the UK, cold water shock is a risk even in summer. Cold water shock can affect your breathing and movement. Always check conditions of the water before going in. Use a wetsuit of appropriate thickness and wear a otation device if needed. Cold water shock can happen in the sea, but also in rivers, lakes, lochs, loughs, reservoirs or canals.
The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) advise the following if you do nd yourself in cold water...
Take a minute to let the initial effects of cold water pass. Don’t try to swim straight away.
Relax and oat on your back to catch your breath. Try to get hold of something that will help you oat.
Help!
Keep calm then call for help or swim to safety if you’re able.
a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
Rip Currents
Rip currents are strong currents running out to sea. They can quickly drag people away from the shallows of the shoreline out to deeper water. They’re dif cult to spot, but channels of churning, choppy water on the sea’s surface act as warnings.
The best way to avoid rip currents is to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow ags. If you do nd yourself caught in a rip, don’t try to swim against it –you’ll get exhausted. If you can stand, wade through the water rather than swimming. If you can’t stand, swim parallel to the shore until you’re free of the rip and then head for shore. Always raise your hand and shout for help.
Tide Times
Tide times and heights change every day so it’s easy to get caught out. Always check the tide timetables before you head out. Search for tide times online, using the Met Of ce website (metoffice.gov.uk) or on local news websites.
Remember that the tide can come in surprisingly quickly, so if you’ve walked round to another cove at low tide the water can block your way back.
Big Waves
Waves are one of the most exciting and impressive things at the beach. However, it’s important to know that waves can be dangerous. If the water is rough, don’t go in. Enjoy watching them from a distance … preferably with an ice
