Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby is desperate to t in at Oceanside High. However, mostly she feels invisible.

She’s tutoring her skater boy crush in maths, but he only seems interested in her fractals (a maths word that describes never-ending patterns of various sizes). She’s also prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach, because her overprotective super mum has forbidden Ruby from ever getting in the water. However, when Ruby breaks her mum’s number one rule, she discovers that she’s a direct descendant of the warrior kraken queens! She’s also destined to inherit the throne from her grandmother –the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas!

The kraken have historically had a bad reputation as monsters. However, they’re actually sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids. That’s right, mermaids are the bad guys! The problem is, Oceanside High’s most popular new girl, Chelsea, also happens to be a mermaid! Ruby will need to use all her newfound powers, embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.

If you’re anything like me, you’re wondering what on Earth a kraken is. Well, the editor of Kids Alive! is your friend (and Google is my friend) so I can tell you that a kraken is a mythical sea monster that was believed to be like an enormous squid.

It’s nice to have people who help us to understand things, isn’t it? I’m reminded of a Bible story about a person from Ethiopia who is reading God’s word, but doesn’t understand it. God sends another person called Philip to help the Ethiopian understand and tell him about Jesus. You can check out this story in Acts 8:26–40.

Sometimes being a Christian can feel tricky, but none of us is alone. We have Jesus and the Holy Spirit to help us, and God places people around us too. Why not ask someone to help you know more about Jesus today?

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW GOOD CAN COME FROM BAD SITUATIONS

Life’s Ups and Downs

My family have had a few ups and downs in the last couple of months. Nothing really disastrous has happened, but a few things have gone wrong. My husband was knocked off his bike by a car (thankfully, he was just a bit battered and bruised). Then my youngest daughter got a bad sickness bug and shared it with her older sister. These things can make life a bit stressful, but thankfully there have been some good family moments in between the bad bits!

Just like his dad, Jacob, Joseph’s life was a bit of a roller coaster. It was full of ups and downs. In this week’s Bible cartoon Joseph goes from being an important member of Potiphar’s household to being

in prison! Being in prison must have been a pretty low moment for Joseph, but he didn’t give up. Even when people forgot about him, he kept faith in God and God was with him.

If you read the rest of Joseph’s story in the Bible you’ll nd out that God wasn’t just with Joseph in the bad times, he also used those bad times to create good times. (Spoiler alert! Joseph helps Pharoah, ends up in charge of the whole of Egypt and reunites with his family – hooray!)

Next time you’re in one of life’s down moments, pray to God about the situation and see what good he can create from it.

In the Bible there are incredible stories of young people choosing to trust God. In return, God used them to do extraordinary things. As you read about these young people, be inspired because Jesus is calling you to make a difference too.

Jesus

What Happened?

When Jesus was 12 years old, he travelled to Jerusalem with his family to celebrate the Passover festival. However, on the way back home, Joseph and Mary realised he was missing. They rushed back to Jerusalem searching for Jesus. Three days later, they found him in the Temple, listening and asking questions. When Mary said that they had been worried, Jesus replied saying, ‘Didn’t you know I’d be in my Father’s house?’

Luke 2:41–52

What Can We Learn?

Even though he was God’s son, young Jesus still spent time learning about God. Doing so, helped him to understand and complete his mission of saving everyone from the wrong things they’ve done.

The Moon

The Moon is the brightest and largest object in our night sky, and the only place away from Earth where humans have set foot. We almost take it for granted, but (a little like the Sun) the Moon has a huge in uence on us. Even though it’s around 385,000km away, the Moon helps to keep Earth from wobbling too much, which also helps our climate to be stable, and it controls the tides of the sea.

I’ve got my ticket ready to go and watch the film! See if you can spot this version of me on ANOTHER PAGE IN THIS WEEK’S ISSUE.

Astronomers believe the Moon was formed when Earth was hit by a space object around the size of Mars. There are more than 200 moons in the Solar System, but ours is the original – at least it’s the rst one we knew about – which is why it’s simply called the Moon. Of all the moons in our Solar System it’s the fth biggest after Ganymede (Jupiter), Titan (Saturn), Callisto and Io (Jupiter).

Helping-Hand Appeal

This week The Summer Reading Challenge begins! (Find out more about that in next week’s KA! World!) Reading is wonderful – you can be transported to another world, learn amazing facts, nd out about fascinating people and more!

The opportunity to learn new things, such as reading, is really important, not only for children but also for the societies they are part of – education is good for individuals and their communities.

Low Literacy

Unfortunately, 250 million children around the world do not have basic literacy skills – the ability to read and write. Young people and adults who are unfairly seen as ‘low-skilled’ are often excluded from taking part fully in their communities. They are denied the opportunity to show what they are good at, to reach their potential and be all that God created them to be.

What’s Water Got To Do With It?

This month we have been sharing about The Salvation Army’s Helping-Hand Appeal which, this year, is all about clean water. You may be wondering what water has to do with education! Well, access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene is essential for the success of any school learning.

Students need clean water to drink, a safe and private toilet to use, and a place to wash their hands to ensure they don’t get poorly. When they have access to these things, their school attendance goes up and so does their ability to concentrate.

When students and teachers are able to focus on education without disruptions, everyone ourishes!

12

Action Army

This is why The Salvation Army works together with students, teachers, parents and the local government to improve access to water and sanitation. For example, The Salvation Army in Kenya works alongside 62 schools around the country.

Muumoni Primary School is one of the schools The Salvation Army has worked with in Kenya. It is located in Mwala Community, within Machakos County in the Eastern Province of Kenya. As part of the project, the school constructed new toilets and ran training sessions about how to improve hygiene practices.

Mr Mbaruka’s Remarks

Mr Mbaruku, the school headteacher, explained some of the changes that the school has seen since the new toilets were built at the school. He said… ‘Since the toilets were constructed, the hygiene in school has improved. The rates of school absence have reduced drastically, and we have noted a remarkable improvement in school educational performance. The children are happier and able to concentrate on their school work.’

Another aspect of the project is installation of a rainwater harvesting system. The reservoir tanks collect rainwater which can be used in different ways in the school. Mr Mbaruku said, ‘All our water storage tanks are full, and this water will provide enough water for the children for drinking, hand washing and for their school meals preparation. We do not have to ask parents and children to bring water to school which has been difficult to them in the past.’

Health clubs are also set up in the schools. Children learn about water and sanitation through fun sessions which include songs, poetry and drama.

These photos are from Darlington Salvation Army. They launched Messy Church last September. Since then, they’ve held one once a month and around 70 people come each time. In May the theme was Jesus calms the storm. Those who attended discovered the story through crafts, a large boat-building project, a game, retelling of the story and singing. There was also a hot meal and ice cream to enjoy. Everyone had great fun learning about how Jesus is always with us, whether we’re going through stormy times or good times.
