Published weekly by The Salvation Army United Kingdom and Ireland Territory. The Salvation Army is a Christian church and registered charity. The charity number in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 214779, in Scotland SC009359 and in the Republic of Ireland CHY6399. ISSN 1363-5662.

You can read them in libraries, in schools and in homes. They come in small leafets and they come in old tomes (that’s the name for an old book). Some of them rhyme and plenty are funny. Some are so sad they’ll make your eyes runny. So have you worked out what we’re on about yet?

If you’ve guessed that it’s poems, then guess what – you’re correct! It’s National Poetry Day this Thursday (3 October), which is a day all about reading and creating poems. This year the theme of the day is counting. Don’t panic if you don’t like maths because it’s not actually just about numbers! It’s also about all of the other ways that the word ‘count’ can be used, such as knowing that your voice counts and paying attention to the things in life that you can count on!

Schools all around the United Kingdom will be getting involved. Tons of kids will be reading spectacular poetry books by writers such as Julia Donaldson and Joy Cowley. Then around 60,000 people will be taking part in a record-breaking online poetry lesson to write one giant poem!

Whether you’re a poetry expert or a poetry newbie, take part in National Poetry Day! Read some brilliant poems. Have a think about the things in your life that you can count on. Then pick up a pen (or your laptop or tablet), put on your thinking cap and have a go at writing your own poem! We’d love to read any poems you come up with, so email them to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk

To find out more about National Poetry Day, head to forwardartsfoundation.org/national-poetry-day

we can count on God to look after us and keep us safe. One of my favourites is Psalm 121 and part of it says this –‘The Lord will protect you and keep you safe from all dangers. The Lord will protect you now and always wherever you go.’ (Contemporary English Version ) This psalm was written by David and he wrote lots of poems and songs to talk to God about his thoughts and feelings.

To celebrate National Poetry Day, why don’t you write a poem for God, just like David did? Tell him how much you count on him and thank him for keeping you safe.

ILove Before Rules

n this week’s Bible cartoon, Jesus does something incredible. He breaks the rules! Now let me be clear, Jesus didn’t sin – he never sinned. However, Jesus did shake things up – a lot!

The man in this week’s story had been unwell for 38 years. To put that into perspective that’s longer than I’ve been alive and I’ve been around since before iPads existed! How do you think the man felt after all that time? Sad? Lonely?

Jesus knew after many years of suffering, the man needed something to remind him that God cared about him. So, he healed him. In a moment, the man’s life was changed for the better. You would think that was great news, wouldn’t you?

But the religious leaders weren’t pleased at all! Jesus had healed on the Sabbath (a holy day) and they weren’t impressed. Instead of celebrating with the man, they were more concerned about following rules.

Again, don’t get me wrong – rules are good. But the wonderful thing about God’s rules is that when they’re followed properly, they show us how to love and treat everyone fairly. Do you think the religious leaders’ reactions showed God’s love?

God wants everyone to know that he loves them and Jesus showed this through the miracles he performed and the words he spoke. As Jesus’ friends we’re encouraged to show love to others too. We probably don’t need to break any rules, but we might need to do something out of the ordinary. Is there anyone you know that you can be extra kind to this week? Show them God’s love through your kind actions.

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Stay Faithful!

Last week’s Bumper Bible Breakdown story was amazing. After years of captivity, the Jews fnally got to return to Judah. Hurray! Around 80 years later, even more Jews returned to Jerusalem! Hurray (again)! This group of Jews were led by a priest called Ezra – a man who really loved God.

When Ezra fnally made it to Jerusalem, he realised that some of the Jews were already not following God properly. They were doing the same kind of things that had got Judah into trouble with God all those years ago!

When Ezra heard about this he was so sad that he tore his cloak! Then Ezra prayed to God to say sorry for what the Jews were doing. As he prayed, a big crowd gathered. All the people of Judah realised that they needed to stay faithful to God, so they decided to follow God properly again!

World Space Week

Picture this! It’s late at night. You look up at the sky and what you see takes your breath away. There are more stars than you could possibly count! Space is breathtakingly beautiful, and it’s also absolutely fascinating and worth learning about. That’s why people take part in World Space Week. Starting on 4 October, World Space Week is a celebration of space, as well as science and technology.

Explore the Galaxy!

Imagine that you’ve launched into space on a rocket unlike any that has been built before! First you might visit…

The Moon

You wouldn’t be the frst human to visit the Moon! The frst person to step on to the Moon was Neil Armstrong in 1969. The Moon is a large object that travels around our planet, but Earth isn’t the only planet to have a moon. In fact, Jupiter has 95 of them!

The Sun

You wouldn’t want to fy your rocket too close to the Sun, because the Sun is a giant, glowing, very hot ball of gas – otherwise known as a star. There are hundreds of billions of stars in every galaxy and there are billions of galaxies! Don’t think about it too much, because it will make your head feel like it’s going to explode!

There are eight planets in our solar system, so you’d have a lot of different worlds to explore! Just like the Moon travels around the Earth, planets travel around the Sun. They can be made of rock or mostly made of gas!

A Russian ‘R-7’,

Space Stations

Space stations are the homes for astronauts who are living in space. There are currently two space stations travelling around Earth. Soon a space station called Gateway is going to be launched to travel around the Moon!

Humans In Space

Did you know that humans have been sending objects into space since 1949? Some truly terrifc technology has been created in the years since.

Rockets

Rockets launch into space. That’s why they’re also known as launchers. They can be used to send other objects into space too, such as satellites. The frst rocket to launch something into space took off on 4 October 1957. That’s why World Space Week begins on 4 October!

Your Turn!

Satellites

Humans launch satellites into space to monitor the Earth. They can even be used to fght climate change. They give us lots of information about the planet, such as places where particularly bad pollution is coming from.

We’ve just taught you lots and lots of facts about space, but you can learn even more by going to events put on for World Space Week. To fnd out more, head to worldspaceweek.org/events

Here are a few other ideas for how you can celebrate World Space Week…

The theme of this year’s World Space Week is Space and Climate Change. Just like satellites can be used to protect the planet, you can help to protect the planet too! Remembering to turn off lights and walking places instead of being driven are great ways to reduce pollution.

Design or build your own rocket! You could use materials that you’ve got lying around the house, such as old boxes and toilet roll tubes.

Ask your parents or carers if you can stay up a bit later one night to watch the night sky. If you have a telescope, you could even use that to get a closer look at the Moon.

Learn more about space by visiting planetsforkids.org.

Have an outof-this-world time during World Space Week!
