SWorld Art Day

omeone very famous was born on 15 April 1452 – can you guess who we’re talking about? We’ll give you a few clues. This person grew up near Florence in Italy, came up with the design for a flying machine and painted the Mona Lisa. Have you figured out who it is yet? If you guessed that it was Leonardo da Vinci, then well done!

Leonardo da Vinci was an incredible artist, and so people all around the world will be celebrating World Art Day on his birthday –15 April, which is this Tuesday. That’s because lots of people believe that creating art isn’t just a fun way of passing an afternoon, but it’s also really important. Art can help us to think about what’s going on in the world, and it can give a voice to people who might be ignored by others.

This World Art Day, people will be going to art galleries to look at amazing creations from the past. They’ll also be going to special events to learn more about art. And, of course, some people will be creating art of their own–whether that’s with a paintbrush, colouring pencils, sculpting tools or something else entirely! We hope that you’ll find a way to celebrate World Art Day too. You might not be able to create a painting quite as spectacular as da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, but we think that you could still make something pretty amazing.

For a few ideas for how you can get creative on World Art Day, check out pages 12 and 13

I’ve got to be honest, although I love looking at paintings and drawings, I’m absolutely terrible at art! So I’m always really impressed by people who are artists. When our graphic designer, Philippa, creates awesome covers or illustrations for I’m always wowed at what she does! I feel the same when I see Andy’s funny Patch’s Pals cartoons and our Bible cartoon, which is drawn by Steve – they’re both so creative with ideas! I’m a firm believer that God has given Philippa, Steve and others their super artistic skills. If you’re not great at art like me, maybe you can explore other ways to be creative. Whether it’s painting, drawing, writing, singing, dancing, playing music or something else, enjoy using the creative skills God has given you this week. Maybe there’s even a way that you can think of to use those skills to help others learn more about God too.

HRead the comment on the right about asking Jesus to save us

Hosanna!

ave you ever had to ask someone for help?

A few years ago, I was driving on the motorway and my car stopped working. I had to steer to the side of the road, and then I had to get out of my car and wait on a grassy hill. I remember not knowing what to do and then deciding to call my dad. I knew that he could save me from my tricky situation.

This week’s Bible cartoon introduces us to a crowd that knew that they needed saving too. As Jesus entered Jerusalem, many people put cloaks and palm branches on the road and praised God. They also shouted, ‘Hosanna!’ That’s a weird word, but it basically means ‘save us’.

The people in Jerusalem were ruled by the Romans. Life was, to put it simply, very tough. These people believed that Jesus could fight off the Romans and become their king. They’d not really understood why Jesus was coming to Jerusalem – but hosanna was still the perfect word to be shouting.

The truth is that the crowd did need saving, and we also need saving too – not from the Romans, but from our sin! We all sometimes do wrong things or decide to do what we want instead of what God wants. We deserve to be in trouble with God, but instead God sent Jesus to save us and welcome us into his family. This Palm Sunday, just like the crowd shouted hosanna to Jesus, why not ask Jesus to save you?

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Esau’s Nation

In Genesis, which is the first book in the Bible, we met a man called Jacob. Jacob had 12 sons and those sons were the beginning of the nation of Israel. Jacob also had a twin brother, who was called Esau. Esau’s children would become a completely different nation, known as Edom.

Even though the nations of Edom and Israel should have been as close as brothers (because Jacob and Esau were brothers), Edom didn’t treat Israel well. In fact, after Judah had been destroyed, Edom joined in with stealing from Jerusalem!

So God had a prophet called Obadiah tell the people of Edom that they would be punished for what they had done. Just like the rest of the world was in trouble for not following God, Edom was in trouble too!

God would look after his people, but because of Edom’s evil, he would not protect that nation.

O for Oman

Oman is a country in West Asia and the Middle East. The capital of Oman is Muscat, which has been an important trading city since the 1st century. Oman often traded frankincense (which was one of the gifts the wise men gave to baby Jesus). In Oman, Friday and Saturday are the days of the weekend instead of Saturday and Sunday!

If you ever stroked a shark (which we wouldn’t recommend you doing), you’d be in for a big surprise – and not a very pleasant one! Sharks are covered in special scales called dermal denticles, which are shaped like teeth. These dermal denticles are tiny, but they still make a shark’s skin about as rough as sandpaper.

Hello, readers, i’M PATCH AND I’VE GOT A PROBLEM I THINK YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP ME WITH. i’VE LOST A VERY IMPORTANT OBJECT SOMEWHERE IN THIS ISSUE. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO HELP ME FIND IT? i HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE HERE.

You might know the date that Valentine’s Day is on or the name of the current king of the United Kingdom. However, there are also plenty of strange facts we reckon you haven’t got stored in your noggin! So here are a couple of random facts that you definitely (and by definitely, we mean don’t really) need to know.

When someone’s cooked a delicious meal, you might hold up your drink to tell them how well they’ve done. This is called raising a toast. When the Romans would raise a toast, they wouldn’t just raise their glasses – they would also put actual toast in their drinks! Believe it or not, they thought that toast improved the taste of their drinks!

What did the artist tell the dentist?

‘Matisse hurt!’ (‘My teeth hurt!’)

Starting from the outer segments and working towards the middle, write the answers to the clues so they all end with the same letter. Some letters have been included to help you. If answered correctly the outer segments will spell out a new word. Clue: Apostle who doubted the Resurrection.

He he, he he!

Ho ho, ha ha, he he!

What is Earth without ‘art’ in it? Eh!

What do pirates do in their free time? They make arrrrrrrrrt!

What do you call someone hanging out by the wall? Art!

Which painting is always complaining?

The Moaning Lisa!

Why did the artist cry when they spilled the scrambled eggs all over their art supplies? They were having an eggs and stencils crisis!

What do you call a painting by a cat? A paw-trait!

How do you support a sad artist? Give them a shoulder to crayon!

Did you know that since the invention of the printing press in 1440, more than 130 million books have been released? World Creativity and Innovation Week

What’s the most creative thing you’ve ever done? Perhaps you’ve come up with a song with some friends from school, or maybe you’ve created a comic strip that’s as funny as Patch’s Pals, which is the cartoon on the back page of Kids Alive!

Getting creative isn’t just something that’s fun to do – it can also help to change the world! That’s exactly what World Creativity and Innovation Week is all about.

Share Your Creativity

World Creativity and Innovation Week (that’s a long name) starts on Tuesday (15 April), and ends on 21 April with World Creativity and Innovation Day. People are being encouraged to use their skills and creativity to help to make positive changes to the world. They’re also being encouraged to share what they create with other people, so that they might be inspired to create something brilliant too!

Fantastic Creators

There are so many fantastic creators who have changed the world for the better! Here are just a few that we think are particularly brilliant…

Wolfgang Mozart Julia Margaret Cameron Zadie Smith

Wolfgang Mozart didn’t just have a marvellous name – he was also a marvellous musician! Aged just 5, he’d already started composing his own music. By the time he was 10, he’d written his first symphony. Mozart wrote more than 600 musical pieces throughout his life!

Julia was born in India in 1815. When Julia was 48 years old, her daughter gave her a camera as a present – and this present changed Julia’s life! Julia became a photographer, and she created a style of photography that’s still used to this day. She became well known for not caring about making mistakes in her artwork. In fact, she’d even add scratches to her photos to make them stand out!

Zadie always loved books, and at the age of 21, she decided that she’d like to write a book of her own. She wrote a novel called White Teeth, which people absolutely loved – and so Zadie’s still writing books nowadays! Zadie’s books often have important messages. She even wrote a book for kids called though the title might not sound like it) is a book all about how good it is to be different!

Other Young Creators!

If Mozart, Julia and Zadie haven’t inspired you enough to want to be a young creator, then you should know about Louis Braille. Louis invented Braille, a way for blind people to read, when he was just 15! You should also know about George Nissen, who invented the trampoline when he was 16 years old. Have we inspired you enough to start creating yet?

Your Turn

This World Creativity and Innovation Week, we think that it would be a fab idea for you to put your creativity to good use. Here are some ideas for what you could get up to…

Amazing Artwork

If you’ve read page 3 of this week’s issue, then you’ll know that it’s World Art Day on Tuesday too! So why not create some amazing artwork? You could paint a picture, or you could create a cartoon. You could spread an important message by making a poster about climate change. Or you could make a sculpture out of recycled materials.

Perfect Photography

If you’ve been inspired by Julia’s story, you could try out photography! Perhaps you could ask some of your family or friends to let you take a few pictures of them. Maybe you could take a camera with you on a walk and take some lovely nature photos.
