IParis 2024 Paris Paralympic s
f you’re a sports fan then you might be feeling sad that the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are well and truly over. Fear not! The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games begin on Wednesday (28 August), promising even more thrilling races and plenty more gold medals. Athletes with a range of disabilities will be showing off their sporting skills as they take part in events such as cycling, swimming and wheelchair basketball. There’ll also be lots of athletes from Great Britain and Northern Ireland taking part – they’ll be in a team called ParalympicsGB! A few ParalympicsGB athletes worth keeping an eye on include Ellie Challis (a swimmer), Thomas Young (a sprinter) and Karé Adenegan (a wheelchair racer). You can find out more about Karé on pages 12 and 13 of this week’s issue! If you liked watching Team GB win lots of medals at the Olympics, then you’re going to love watching ParalympicsGB in action! At the last Paralympic Games in 2021, ParalympicsGB won a total of 124 medals, meaning they came second in the medals table! This year they’re aiming to win even more! So expect plenty of brilliant sporting moments with this year’s Paralympic Games. Don’t forget to tune in – we think the Games are going to be unforgettable!
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games take place from 28 August to 8 September. You can watch the Paralympic Games live on Channel 4, More 4, Channel 4 Streaming and Channel 4’s YouTube page.
I’ve just been reading some really cool stuff about the Paralympics. For example, did you know that there are four Paralympic values? They are determination, equality, inspiration and courage. Organisers of the Paralympics hope that if athletes show these values while they’re competing, as well as in their everyday lives, they’ll be positive role models for people who watch them. Especially to kids like you!
I don’t know about you, but I think these four values are pretty good to use in your everyday life, even if you’re not a Paralympian. They’re especially good if you want to show others you’re a follower of Jesus. Determination to be the best person you can be, treating everyone equally, inspiring others with your behaviour and having the courage to share Jesus with your friends. Do you think you can do these things and be a role model for those around you?

In this week’s Bible cartoon, Moses was told by God to free the Israelites from slavery. Moses could have taken a sword with him. If Moses had given himself some time to prepare, he could have made a catapult. Then he could have dragged his catapult all the way to Egypt. If Moses was feeling particularly brainy, he could have even tried to make an Iron Man suit!
I’m joking, obviously, but Moses was about to go up against Pharaoh, one of the most powerful men in the world. So what did he take with him? He took some words he’d remembered to say, his brother Aaron and a staff.
The truth is that Moses didn’t need a sword, axe, bow and arrow, catapult or Iron Man suit because God was looking after him. God gave Moses the words to say, gave Moses the help of his brother and gave Moses his staff (which he would later use for some amazing miracles)! Plus, God was going to be with Moses every step of the way!
God gives you everything that you need to follow him too. Telling your friends about Jesus might seem about as scary as going up against a pharaoh, but God is with you just like he was with Moses. With the Holy Spirit living inside you, God can even help you to say the right things. You don’t need to be super brainy to do what God wants you to do. You don’t need to know how to build a catapult or how to make an Iron Man suit – you just need to trust in God.
Don’t Need a Catapult! says Jacob Adams

Bumper Bible Breakdown
Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.
The Fall of Israel
The Kingdom of Israel continued to have wicked rulers. The kings that came from Ahab’s family were so evil that God sent a man called Jehu to get rid of them.
Then Jehu became king but even he didn’t follow God! A pattern was emerging – none of the kings were interested in doing what God wanted.
After Jehu died, there was Jehoahaz, Jehoash and Jeroboam II. Take a deep breath, because after Jeroboam II, there were even more dreadful kings! There was Zechariah, Shallum (take another deep breath), Menahem, Pekahiah and … drum roll, please … Pekah! All of these kings – all eight of them – were evil!
2kdownKings 2 Kings
Finally there was Hoshea, the last king of Israel. Israel had been warned plenty of times that they needed to follow God, but they didn’t listen. So God let a nation called Assyria invade the entire land. Samaria, the capital of Israel, was captured and the Israelites were scattered.

magine that you’re at a funfair. You’ve been on a Ferris wheel, driven a dodgem and gone down a helter-skelter. Now it’s time to get some delicious cotton candy (which is the name for candy floss in the USA). You wait patiently as your cotton candy is spun around a cone. It smells so good your tummy starts to rumble. However, when you’re handed the cotton candy, you notice something very odd … it’s actually a cuddly toy! That might sound ridiculous, but Cotton Candykins are cuddly toys that actually look like cotton candy! Each Cotton Candykins comes in packaging with a cotton candy cone sticking out of the top. When you spin the cone and unwrap the plushie’s tail, a cotton candy cuddly toy is revealed! If you sniff your Cotton Candykins, you’ll notice that it smells like cotton candy too!
For your opportunity to win your own Cotton Candykins, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk

Faith In Action
With the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games starting soon (check out page 3 to find out more), we thought that it would be a fab idea to learn about Paralympians, old and new, who are Christians!
Karé Adenegan
Karé is a British wheelchair racer. She won silver and bronze medals at the Rio and Tokyo Paralympic Games!
Karé has cerebral palsy, which affects her muscles and makes it harder to move. In 2012, Karé sat down to watch the Paralympics on her television. She watched as an athlete called Hannah Cockroft won a gold medal. Karé realised that she could be an athlete, just like Hannah! Four years later, Karé took part in her first Paralympic Games!
It’s All About Jesus!
Karé isn’t just a brilliant athlete – she’s also a Christian. She knows that it’s easy to use sport to make yourself look brilliant, but Karé believes that sport is actually about showing how brilliant God is! She uses her sport as an opportunity to tell lots of people about Jesus.
If you’d like to see Karé in action, then check out the T34 100m and 800m at this year’s Paralympic Games!
Neil Louw
Neil is a sprinter from South Africa. Although he’s retired now, he won bronze and silver medals at the Barcelona and Atlanta Paralympic Games.
On 26 December 1984, Neil went out on a boat with his brother and a friend. A terrible accident happened and Neil lost one of his arms! For the next few months Neil was in a lot of pain and that made life really hard. However, Neil also realised how much God loved him. He knew that God had a plan for him.
Sydney Games
Neil went on to become a superb sprinter, winning lots of silver and bronze medals. At the Paralympic Games in Sydney, he hoped to take home the best medal he could get – gold. However, Neil was injured in the race! At first, he was gutted. Then he realised that he could use his injury as a way of telling his teammates about Jesus.
Now, 24 years later, Neil works to support other athletes with disabilities, encouraging them to tell their teammates about Jesus.
Stef Reid
Stef is a retired Canadian and British long jumper. She’s a five-time world record holder and won a silver medal at the London 2012 Paralympics.
When Stef was just 15 years old, a terrible injury caused Stef to lose her right foot! Stef grew up in a Christian family but she’d never paid much attention to God. However, as Stef was in the ambulance taking her to hospital, she realised how important it was to follow God. Stef even remembers praying to God and saying, ‘God, save me!’
‘God, Let Me Win!’
When Stef went to university, she got really into athletics! She realised that with the help of her prosthetic leg she was a magnificent long jumper.
At first, Stef cared more about winning competitions than anything else. She would pray, ‘God, let me win!’ Then Stef realised that winning at sport wasn’t the most important thing. The most important thing was showing everyone how fantastic God is.
Your Turn!
We hope that you’ve been as blown away by Karé, Neil and Stef’s stories as we were! Just like God is the most important part of their lives, God should be the most important part of your life too! So…
...Talk to God! It doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re doing – pray to him!
...Whenever something goes well, thank God! He gave you all of the gifts that you have.
...When things don’t go well, have faith that God is in control! Tell your friends about Jesus!
Just like Karé, Neil and Stef, put your faith into action!
