Being in community
THIS week’s issue sees the publication of officer appointments on pages 9 to 13. It includes those newly appointed and those who will be staying where they are for a little while longer. For some, this list is an opportunity to check on the movements of friends, colleagues or former officers.
Hopefully, there should be no surprises for the officers themselves. Whether former, current or newly appointed, in each case there will be the reality of being in community. Being a part of something unique. Being engaged in the lives of others for a season and the opportunities and challenges that this brings.
The articles that surround this list also speak into the need for community and being aware of the needs of those around you. How we live and how we choose to engage with others are perhaps the most powerful tools in the communication of the gospel. Being Jesus where we are.
We pray – and say thank you – for all our officers. That God will bless them and the communities they find themselves in. That, in living out the gospel, they will show Christ to those who know him and to those who don’t.

Attitude of gratitude
DO you ‘live, laugh, love’? Does ‘teamwork make the dream work’ for you? Are you ‘living your best life’ because ‘yolo’ (you only live once)? Slogans and catchphrases can be positive reminders for how to live our lives – although these few are from my personal Room 101.
One phrase that came close to joining them recently was ‘having an attitude of gratitude’. Even now, the saying makes me mildly uneasy, as it could be misconstrued as a missive to sugar-coat tough times. However, gratitude is a powerful quality – it can bring joy in the midst of challenging circumstances.
The Bible has plenty to say on gratitude, emphasising its importance in the life of the believer.
1 Thessalonians
5:18 reminds us to ‘give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you’. You could be forgiven for thinking that this means sugar-coating your trials because that’s what God wants, but that isn’t what Paul says. He is reminding us that practising gratitude is not simply a response to favourable circumstances, but a mindset that acknowledges God’s goodness, even if times are tough.
And the great thing about gratitude? It has a far-reaching impact on us and those around us. Harvard Medical School says: ‘Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. [It] helps people feel more
positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.’
We all experience tough times at some point in our lives. The older I am, the more challenges seem to crop up, but I’m learning to be grateful in the moment for God’s goodness as he walks me through tough days. I take comfort and joy when I look back with gratitude for nurturing corps fellowships who have loved, supported, inspired and guided me, which itself makes me more able to respond to others with love, compassion and service, even when I feel like I’m battling on.
This Founders’ Day (2 July), we’re being encouraged as a church family to harness our collective ‘attitude of gratitude’ to celebrate the Army’s birthday. Our Movement has been sharing the gospel and tackling social injustice for 158 years – and that mission hasn’t been achieved by any one person alone. What better way to celebrate than by bolstering others, saying ‘thank you’ to everyone who’s contributed to our work, to our world and, most importantly, to God’s Kingdom?
In our attitude of gratitude, let others see a people living in and acknowledging God’s goodness in all circumstances –and inviting them to do likewise, experiencing fullness of life with Jesus.
What are you grateful for? Write a blessing a day for a year and read them next year to celebrate all you’ve been given.
When has having an attitude of gratitude changed how you’ve felt about a tough situation?
Who has supported you in finding faith? Your officers? Fellow corps members? Thank God for them.
Visit salvationist.org.uk/ celebrating-salvation-army for ideas to celebrate the Army’s birthday this weekend.

How to support children during the move
Major Jane Mylechreest encourages us to consider families facing a change of appointment
AS many officers and territorial envoys prepare to say farewell to their current appointments and move to new locations, this is a good time to consider how to support their families – and anyone else with children moving home or moving in or out of your church community. Here are some tips that might help:
Greet them
Send greetings to the children from their new corps. Include information about the great things in your corps and your local area, such as photos and letters from the Sunday school or youth group. Tell them where to find the best parks or swimming pools or libraries or fun events. Include postcodes to help with driving in a new area.
Be understanding
Remember that first impressions may not be accurate. Moving is traumatic and exhausting, and going into a new Salvation Army worship meeting can be overwhelming. The children might be shy or excited, tearful or exuberant. Don’t assume they will always be the same as they are in the first few weeks – it takes most of a year to feel comfortable in a new location. Strive to be gentle and generous to the officer and their family.
Invite them to activities
Even if it’s something at the corps that you assume they will be attending, asking ‘Are you coming to band this week?’ or ‘Would you like a lift to youth councils?’ can help children feel noticed. Your corps traditions at Christmas, Easter, YP celebrations, etc, are familiar to you but will still need explaining to ensure the children feel included.
Give them space
You may offer to have the children sit with you – or long to give a baby or toddler a cuddle! – and some children will be delighted. But many will also feel a strong need in all the upheaval to be close to their parents. It takes a lot of courage and emotional energy to go to new schools and make friends, and there will be sad or anxious evenings. Give officers the time to be with their children and support them.
Listen
Although it can be exciting to be at a new corps, children can also feel a sense of loss about a move and the people they have left behind. Listen to them if they want to talk about their old corps. Ask what songs they like to sing, or in what ways they would like to participate at their new corps. Don’t ask them which corps, town or school they prefer.
Offer them a welcome buddy
Choose someone to be a ‘welcome buddy’. The buddy can show them around the hall, sit next to them in Sunday school and answer any questions. The buddy doesn’t have to be the same age – teenagers might be a good match with younger children.
Value them
When a change of appointment is announced, take time to remind children they have been a valuable part of your corps and that you will continue to love and pray for them. Don’t speculate about moves with them. If they bring it up, discuss it with them, but do not assume they know if their parents are expecting a move or not – they will worry about it even if they are not moving.
Celebrate them
Plan a farewell celebration that includes the children. Why not give them a memento of their time with you, such as a memory book filled with notes and pictures?
Pray
Learn their names and ages and pray for them regularly in their corps and schools. Loving and supporting an officer and their family also makes a difference to the long-term spiritual health of a corps because it impacts the pastoral and spiritual care an officer is able to give. Bless your corps officers and their families and you will be blessed by them!

Rob Moye runs through the inspiration behind the Big Stride Challenge at Together 2023
‘LOVE one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples’ (John 13:34 and 35). Jesus’ words are a call to action – to love wholeheartedly, compassionately and sacrificially. This is a call to love God and demonstrate that love to others because people in our communities desperately need to hear this good news and receive this unconditional love.
Paul said ‘the love of Christ compels us’ (2 Corinthians 5:14 New King James Version), and we can’t – and mustn’t –hold back from showing others this love in action.
During Together 2023, we have some incredible mission opportunities to demonstrate that love to others, be salt to flavour our communities and live as light to brighten the darkness. How can you share that joy during the weekend?
SAVE THE DATE
WHAT: Together 2023
WHERE: Fairfield Halls, Croydon
WHEN: 14–16 July
BOOK YOUR TICKET: salvationist.org.uk/together
Sign up and be part of the Big Stride Challenge and impact your community through sport by running, jogging or walking 5km. Enjoy the fresh air, have fun and use this challenge to invite your neighbours, friends and family to join you. You might wish to use the challenge to help fundraise for The Salvation Army’s vital work with people in need across the UK and Republic of Ireland, but this is not compulsory.
On Saturday 15 July at 8.30am, there will be a group of people leaving from the front of Fairfield Halls, the main venue for the weekend, to enjoy the 5km run and/ or walk together – look out for the people in the Go! Team Sally Army tops.
Also on the Saturday, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, there will be a community festival in Queen’s Gardens, opposite Fairfield Halls. There will be live music, pop-up sports, fun and creative activities for the whole family, a muddy walk as we consider caring for creation, plus lots of other ways to engage and be a blessing to others!
Celebration comes from the human spirit, and we want people to get a glimpse of what the Kingdom of God is like through creativity, celebration and community – where everyone is included and people form positive relationships.
Jesus said: ‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full’ (John 10:10). We want people to experience this fullness of life for themselves, both during the weekend and beyond the event, as
we each live out this life of mission.
To take part in the Big Stride Challenge, head to salvationarmy.org.uk/run/bigstride. The challenge is not restricted to the event itself, as we want as many people and communities across the territory to be impacted by it as possible. Therefore, if you cannot be at Together 2023 in person, why not go to a local event in your community and seek to engage with what God is already doing in your area? You could create a fun run yourself and consider how others in your corps and community might get involved and demonstrate God’s extravagant, invitational love to others.
Remember: mission begins at your front doorstep, so come on, get involved!

Major Martin Hill asks what steps we are taking to change our behaviour
ISAIAH 1:1–20
IN a sketch from his TV series The Bob Newhart Show, the American comedian plays the role of a therapist whose client shares with him her problem behaviour. He responds with short, sharp advice: ‘Stop it!’ However much she explains the possible reasons for her situation, he repeats the same two words: ‘Stop it!’
In the opening chapter of Isaiah, the prophet relays words from God. His short, sharp advice to the people and their leaders can be summarised in two words – ‘Stop it!’ – a demand that he repeats.
There is a significant difference between the approach of Newhart’s therapist and that of God. The therapist is not interested in hearing, let alone understanding, his client’s situation, scoring zero on empathy. God, however, wants a meaningful conversation –dialogue not monologue – with mutual understanding. He sees his relationship with his people as that of a parent with their child. His advice is the outcome of a loving relationship, but is still summarised in two words: ‘Stop it!’
Isaiah communicates the message to his people: you need to get things sorted with God. An honest conversation has been a long time coming. Keep avoiding it and drifting and you know where things are likely to end up. Come clean and you’ll be clean. Bite the bullet or bite the dust. It’s your choice.
That is the gist of verses 18 to 20, the culmination of our study passage.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
Imagine God is your therapist.
What would you ask him to help you with?
What advice do you suspect he might give?
In the opening verses of our study passage, Isaiah cries out to the heavens and earth to listen to the message he has received from God: The Lord brought them into being and reared them, but now they are rebelling, thinking that they know better than their parent. Even animals can recognise who is boss, but Israel seemingly can’t. They are a bunch of sinful, corrupt evildoers.
Next, the Lord sounds off to rulers, those with authority. Today, they would include those with responsibility –teachers, leaders, opinion formers, influencers – those who set the tone and example. Accountability, however, is not wholly theirs. The people cannot shirk their individual responsibility.
He uses the metaphor of Sodom and Gomorrah as an example of bad rulers of corrupt people. The people do pray, but these are guilty hands that they lift in prayer – presenting to God the very hands that have dishonoured him. God wants integrity not hypocrisy, sincerity not show.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
Who has been a good influence upon you?
Who do you influence?
In what ways do you influence them?
The Lord tells his people: ‘Your hands are full of blood! Wash and make yourselves clean’ (vv15 and 16).
It’s not the perfection of the sacrificial animal that matters, but the condition of the person offering it. ‘Sacrifice’ literally means ‘to make something sacred’. God requires his people to make themselves holy by giving God the sacrifice of a blameless life. Effectively, he says: ‘You, not the animal, pay the cost. If you need to kill something, then make it your sinful nature. I don’t want to see your evil deeds. Stop doing wrong. Stop it!’
Isaiah sets out what is important to the Lord: ‘Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow’ (v17).
The Lord requires action, not sympathy. He commands his people to ‘seek’, ‘defend’, ‘take up’ and ‘plead’. They are so ingrained in their selfcentred way of thinking that they need re-educating. New habits need to be learnt. They don’t come naturally.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
Which is more important in changing our behaviour, a new understanding or self-discipline?
Any salesperson promoting a new product knows that they can’t just enthuse about the merits of their product. They need to close the deal. The matter needs to be finalised. The Lord doesn’t just want to leave his people with something to think about. He also wants a result, so issues an invitation:
‘Come now, let us settle the matter…
Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool’ (v18).
The Lord’s deal is this: he is willing to write off past sins. He will overlook ethical bankruptcy. Going forward, the people have two options. They can willingly obey and flourish or they can rebelliously resist and die by the swords of their enemies.
The message that Isaiah delivers starts with ‘stop it’ and finishes with ‘start it’ –with a new understanding shaping new behaviour.
Prayer Matters contains daily devotions covering specific areas in the territory, current worldwide situations and personal reflection and relationship with God. A PDF of the unedited booklet is available to download from salvationist.org.uk/resources
Each month we will be centring our prayers and themes on a character trait of Jesus. In July the focus is on Jesus and his transforming power.
MISSION FOCUS
by Captain Gary Lacey (Territorial Prayer Network Co-ordinator)SATURDAY 1 JULY – MATTHEW 28:19
Father, you have created us to carry out your mission. Strengthen us to embrace your ever-presence and your relentless love and work to build your Kingdom here on Earth. Lead us into places we never thought possible. Help us to develop trust without borders, so that we make sure we seek you first and not our own agendas. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
SUNDAY 2 JULY – ACTS 13:47
Today is Founders’ Day, the birthday of The Salvation Army. Originally called The Christian Mission, we are still called by God to share the mission of bringing light to the world and fighting injustice to the very end. Lord, give us the sharpness and the spiritual tools that we need to join in your mission. Amen.
MONDAY 3 JULY – MATTHEW 24:14
God, you have laid down our pattern for mission in no uncertain terms. We are to preach the gospel, live out the gospel and spread the gospel. Thank you for including us in this astonishing task. Help us to embrace this challenge and give us the necessary skills to do so. Amen.
TUESDAY 4 JULY – 1 CHRONICLES 16:24
The power of the declared story is that it brings testimonies to life and implants them in people’s hearts as the Spirit infuses every story of his amazing love to us. Jesus, we declare that you are King of all. We commit to sharing stories of your deeds to all we meet. Amen.
WEDNESDAY 5 JULY – ACTS 1:8
Holy Spirit, come and invade every inch of my very being. Strengthen my resolve in witnessing to the whosoever. Empower your Church to be a truly fired-up people. Amen.
THURSDAY 6 JULY – JOHN 20:21
Lord, this verse feels like a spiritual green light! You are calling us to go into a world of unbelief to speak the truth of the gospel. Fire us up to go in your name. Amen.
FRIDAY 7 JULY – ISAIAH 52:7
Lord, we speak your good news over our nation and the whole world. We declare that peace reigns, we spread joyful tidings of your mighty works, we shout salvation over our families and our communities, and we declare over all the world that our God reigns! Amen.

Appointments list 2023
THIS list is published following the General Farewell process, whereby the identifying of appointments for officers and territorial envoys accepting new responsibilities is preceded by consultation with individual officers, line managers and corps/centre representatives.
It shows how all active UKI officers (in this territory, at IHQ and overseas), non-UKI officers serving in the territory and territorial and divisional envoys in corps, social services and headquarters appointments will be deployed at the General Change in July 2023. Some appointments effective subsequently are also shown.
New appointments that have not been announced previously are indicated with a circumflex accent (^) and modified ones with an asterisk (*). Where necessary, a fuller description of the appointment is given.
Information is provided by and published courtesy of the Personnel Service, THQ, and is correct at the time of going to press.

Woking Value in volunteering

VALIANTLY HOLDING THE FORT
Majors David and Margaret House were the corps officers for almost four years until their recent retirement. The responsibility for keeping things running, until new officers arrive later this summer (see pages 9 to 13), temporarily rests with local officers, retired officers, corps members and a fantastic team of willing volunteers, who have all been capably supporting the weekly programme and worship for some time. Major Margaret commends them, saying: ‘During these intervening months, it’s these folk who are keeping things afloat and they are excited to welcome their new leaders.’
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Major Margaret, no stranger to volunteering herself, was inspired to take to social media to recruit new volunteers through the village Facebook page. Many committed volunteers came forward and they continue to provide invaluable support. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Major Margaret – who was a nurse previously – undertook voluntary vaccination duties.
Major Margaret says that corps volunteers range from 18 years of age to folk in their 80s and come from all walks of life. They’re helping with the parent-and-toddler group, luncheon club, tea and coffee rotas and even keeping a check on the building and its maintenance.
A retired hospice nurse who volunteers has taken a young woman who is on a
work placement under her wing. The local probation service even helped to decorate the building.
A celebration service acknowledged the volunteers and all the great work they do. All the volunteers were invited to attend. One brought five friends along with them, all attending worship for the first time. Since then, new people have begun to join for worship regularly.
RAINWATER RECYCLING
The building was reconstructed in 2009 and uses environmentally friendly rainwater systems for its toilet flush facilities. It is hoped that this will inspire other corps to explore the many possibilities for eco church endeavours, especially following the territory’s recent climate emergency declaration.
HOPE IN HANDOVER
Before retiring, Majors David and Margaret informally handed over leadership to the corps secretary, corps treasurer and songster leader (pictured above). As they move on to a new phase in their journey, so does the corps and many others in the territory who are also in times of transition and pending changes in leadership. Pray God’s blessing and abundance on them all in the days ahead.
ANNIVERSARY
MERTHYR TYDFIL Chief Secretary Colonel Paul Main and Territorial Secretar y for Leader Development Colonel Jenine Main led the 145th corps anniversary celebrations, themed God’s Faithfulness. The weekend commenced with a fun afternoon of games and activities in the park. At the Saturday night festival, the band and songsters were supported by members of Valleys Cynefin and Retired Bandmaster Howard Roberts spoke on the history of the corps, Corps Sergeant-Major Lynne Brill spoke on the present and Corps Secretary Pam Brill spoke on the future. In addition to the Sunday meetings a fellowship buffet was enjoyed, including a celebration cake. The weekend was well attended, including previous corps officers and friends of the corps. – LB
EVENT
LEIGH-ON-SEA Worship on Wednesday’s theme of Child’s Play saw children from the corps Smiley’s Preschool join in an afternoon of arts and crafts. A member of worship on Wednesday was one of the original staff at the preschool. The afternoon experience was enjoyed by youngsters and adults alike. – PJ
MUSIC
SUNDERLAND MILLFIELD Music Editorial Manager Andrew Blyth (THQ) led a united divisional songsters rehearsal at the hall, attended by more than 100 singers. Songs included ‘My Father’s House’ and ‘Now Is the Time’ and corps officer Major Mark Billard presented a devotional thought. Andrew’s passionate and skilled leadership greatly encouraged all who attended. – AM
BRIGHTON CONGRESS HALL On a warm Sunday morning, the band supported a large crowd at the Brighton Blessing of the Nets service with music alongside the Fishermen’s Choir. Many of those who stopped to listen to the service joined in the singing. After the service, a buffet lunch provided another opportunity for ministry. – BW
FUNDRAISING
NOTTINGHAM After learning about the Army’s work at a student welcome event, University of Nottingham students Ella-Mae, Emily, Cameron and Kieran skydived from 14,000 feet to raise funds for Nottingham Meadows, Nottingham Aspley and Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls. – AR
MEETING
BIRMINGHAM CITADEL More than 40 books were given to children connected to the corps, as Sunday school children took over the audio visual roles, leadership and Bible message during the meeting. Following the meeting, a bring-and-share lunch preceded a concert by the junior music sections. – RO

LIEUTENANT James and Sophie Pegg (Feltham) led Design for Life for children, providing an opportunity for young people to engage with and discuss faith.
Starting with icebreaker games, the children formed into groups to begin focused sessions, including Where Have I Been, Who Am I Now, What Is God’s Calling, Where Do You Think I’m Going and What Is God’s Plan for Me.
The attendees enjoyed refreshments, lunch and an evening meal together and the day concluded with reflection and prayer. Special moments were shared as the children outlined verses from psalms that spoke into their hearts. – HW

GRAHAM FARMER BIRMINGHAM CITADEL
GRAHAM was born in 1938 to Nellie and Jim, who were stalwarts of Hockley Corps, Birmingham. He loved attending the Army there, along with aunts and uncles, and was soon joined by younger brother Trevor.
Graham transferred to Birmingham Citadel in 1958 and took his place in the band and songsters. He married Marion in 1971 and so began a true Christian partnership that influenced so many people.
Graham was a great encourager, a wonderful worker for the Lord and always took an interest in everyone he met. Daughter Gaynor and son Timothy, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were adored by Graham. His faith was simple but profound. It was summed up at his thanksgiving service: ‘God loves me, and I love God.’
Graham passed away suddenly, leaving Marion, family and his many friends mourning the loss of a great Salvationist and faithful servant. – GS
MARGARET NUNN EDINBURGH GORGIE
ORIGINALLY from Glasgow, Margaret was a lifelong Salvationist, and a skilled musician and music teacher.
A soldier at Edinburgh Gorgie for more than 70 years, she served as leader of the home league singers, then singing company leader. She also taught at the Army’s summer music camps for many years, and more recently ran the over-60 club for nine years, providing varied and engaging activities.
She and her late husband, Cliff, forged many lasting friendships, often despite geographical distances. In her later years, Margaret embraced social media to maintain contact with friends throughout the world. Family have been touched, but not surprised, by the large number of fond messages received in person, in cards and on social media. – MS/AR/DN
LES JOHNSON IPSWICH CITADEL
LES Johnson was born in 1937 in a town near to Wigan and went to The Salvation Army from the age of six, until the local corps closed and he became a Methodist.
In 1961 he moved to Cambridge and re-joined The Salvation Army. After studying in Ipswich, he moved to Oxford, where he met his wife, Janet.
The family came to Ipswich in 1982 and joined Ipswich Citadel. Les was a valued member of the corps, over the years being corps treasurer and corps secretary and running the luncheon club. His fine singing voice was much appreciated in the songsters.
As an excellent meeting leader, he supported small local corps with his ministry. Aside from worship, he was an avid walker and helped set up a popular walking group. Les was a caring, Christian man and an encourager, particularly of the younger members of the corps. He will be greatly missed. – DC
KATH PAYNE HILLINGDON
KATH Payne was born in 1943 and married Ernie in 1962. Kath and Ernie soldiered at Marylebone, Potton, Greenford and Hanwell, before transferring to Hillingdon with their three daughters, Debbie, Belinda and Nicola, in 1982. They served there together until Ernie’s promotion to Glory in 2015.
Kath continued her service in the songsters and as corps secretary, taking an active part in the administration and spiritual leadership of the corps until ill health and the Covid-19 pandemic prevented her attendance. Her strong faith gave her strength to continue through these difficult times, together with the support of family and friends.
She will be remembered by so many from Hillingdon Corps, past and present, for her encouragement and kind words, and for the example of the true Christian lady that she endeavoured to be. A much-loved and much-missed mum, nana and great-nana. – JK
JILL WELLING STAPLE HILL
JILL was born in Bristol on 3 September 1940 into the family of William and Doris, living in the Staple Hill area all her life. Upon leaving school she worked as a sewing machinist, and it was there that she met her husband, Rex, and they married in 1960.
Their son, Steve, was born in 1964 and in later years became a great strength to Jill as she journeyed through various forms of cancer treatment.
Jill became a part of the corps 30 years ago, after being invited to attend by a friend. She became an adherent and became actively involved in coffee mornings, the parent-and-toddler groups, lunch club and ladies fellowship, and enjoyed taking part in services at care homes.
Jill was always immaculate and, while she became too ill to attend meetings during later months, she enjoyed watching online worship and remained interested and involved as much as she could. – VW
NORA JONES ABERYSTWYTH
BORN in 1932, Nora Pallant grew up in the shadow of the Ebbw Vale Steelworks. Commissioned in 1953 as a member of the Heralds session, Nora was initially appointed to Deptford goodwill Centre. After appointments in goodwill centres in Glasgow and West Bromwich, Nora left officership, returning home to care for her mother.
Nora soon met Trevor Jones, whom she married in 1959. They had two children, Lyndon and Heather, and later were also blessed with grandchildren. In 1981, Nora resumed her calling to ministry and was appointed as envoy to Aberystwyth Corps. Her ministry then took her to Tenby, Port Talbot and Abertillery, before returning to Aberystwyth in retirement.
After a period of poor health, Nora was promoted to Glory from Blaendyffryn Hall care home near Llandysul, and is now reunited with her beloved Trevor. – TM
