To boldly go

REGULAR readers may recall previous issues in which I have made reference to popular films and TV shows. ‘To boldly go’ are among the opening words of an oft-quoted line from Star Trek. The context is that of a starship and crew whose raison d’être is to seek out new frontiers in space.

In this week’s issue we once again acknowledge the many frontiers and mission opportunities to which the Army’s spiritual leaders have said yes. Some are stepping out boldly to new places and engaging new faces in their appointments. Others are exploring where God might lead them within their current appointments in the coming year.

Whether we are called to spiritual leadership or not, as followers of Jesus we are each called to follow boldly wherever he leads us. Our boldness comes from the confidence that we have that God has a plan and a purpose for our lives and there is nowhere that we can go and no situation he is not already in.

The apostle Paul went boldly preaching wherever God sent him, even to Rome where he stayed, under guard, for more than two years (see Acts 28:30 and 31). Where is God sending you?

It’s the hope that gives you life

After the Euros 2024 final, Justin Reeves celebrates the power of hope

IT’S been a week since last Sunday. The nightmare is still a reality.

Same old England – they gave us hope and blew it. And so, my almost lifelong journey as a perennial men’s international football-supporting loser continues.

My journey with the Three Lions began 42 years ago. I was born in 1972, but any England fan over a certain age knows the 1970s saw the men’s national side wandering the footballing wilderness.

Not until the 1982 World Cup – when Ron Greenwood’s boys promised ‘This Time (We’ll Get it Right)’ – did England capture my imagination. Things in Spain began so well that year: Bryan Robson scored after 27 seconds against France, starting England on the way to a 3-1 opening game win. Victories over Czechoslovakia and Kuwait followed, securing us a place in the second group stage. Unfortunately, two 0-0 draws against West Germany and Spain determined that England – not football – were coming home.

Over the years, I’ve learnt to take defeat on the chin. The only England presence at Euro 1984 was George Courtney – a referee. Maradona’s ‘hand of God’ at the 1986 World Cup was a real sucker punch. We lost all three group games at Euro 1988. The 1990 World Cup brought the first in what felt like a long run of penalty shootout heartaches. For

the 1994 World Cup, I had to lend my support to Ireland and Scotland.

Then there was Euro 1996, hosted in England. That was the summer I chose to work as a counsellor at a kids’ camp in Florida. I missed every game! Tournament after tournament of disappointments followed.

There’s a saying in football: ‘It’s the hope that kills you.’ I think my footballing hope had all but gone before Gareth Southgate came to the rescue as the manager of the England men’s football team. Three semi-finals, two finals and one shiny trophy in four tournaments? Today’s fans in their overpriced football shirts don’t know they’re born!

But that phrase: ‘It’s the hope that kills you.’ Really? Where would we be without hope? It’s hope that gives us life! The hope of something better is what keeps us plodding on through the toughest of times. That determination to go again, to do better, work better, help better, share better, love better, live better – that’s hope, isn’t it?

Romans 5:3 and 4 remind us: ‘We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.’ Later, in Romans 15:13, we’re encouraged: ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope

by the power of the Holy Spirit.’

In recent weeks, I’ve heard people say ‘in Gareth we trust’. Regardless of the final result last weekend, there’s no doubt that Gareth Southgate’s done a remarkable job. However, I know where my trust lies – in the remarkable, life-giving hope that Jesus offers.

Reflect and respond

Read Romans 5:1–11 and be encouraged that Jesus’ death and resurrection offer us real hope.

A new football season will soon begin, bringing fresh hope to fans across the country. Are you moving into a new season of life? What are your hopes for that new season? Have you included Jesus in your plans?

Are there situations where hope seems lost? Pray into those, that God will move and influence what’s going on in remarkable ways.

‘God has taught me to trust’

Ahead of his retirement, Territorial Envoy

1 The tune ‘Victory for Me’ is a theme in the 1995 march named after this corps, linking the naval and spiritual associations of this Hampshire city.

Philip Goldsmith (Harold Hill) celebrates that God can cope with any situation

Iup against the building and setting it on fire. However, we persevered through it, which made us stronger. We got to know the families and the young people, and they started using our building and we were able to provide something for them.

2 The early days of this citadel in an East Sussex town were hazardous when the mayor supported the Skeleton Army.

3 A 1986 march featuring ‘On to the Conflict, Soldiers, for the Right’ (SASB 970) and Royal Navy march ‘Heart of Oak’ celebrates this corps where the band wear white caps.

4 Norman Bearcroft’s ‘Bournemouth Centennial’ celebrates the bustling conurbation of these three corps.

5 The musical Glory! was based on Colonel Edward Joy’s book The Old Corps, which tells the pioneering story of this Kentish corps.

6 A 1957 Daniel Hollis march celebrates the achievements of this East Sussex corps.

7 When the Army’s Holiday Plus Fellowship gatherings moved here, Leslie Condon wrote a march that took this royal town as its title.

8 Both Richard Slater in 1912 and Andrew Blyth in 1990 used the name of this Kentish corps in the title of their music.

GREW up in The Salvation Army. When I was 17 or 18, I worked in the city as a barrister’s clerk. One day I was asked to clean out an office and I came across this book called God’s Smuggler. It was written by a Dutch missionary called Andrew van der Bijl and was about his experiences smuggling Bibles into communist countries at the height of the Cold War. Although I’d always known God in my life, that book became instrumental in me handing over my life to Christ. I handed over all my authority to him, realising that God was beyond my little understanding of everything. I have been a territorial envoy for more than 22 years, serving only in one place, which is very unusual. Harold Hill is a housing estate, about three miles up the road from Romford. The Army had a building there since the 1960s, but it was threatened with closure due to the lack of worship. Divisional headquarters said to me: ‘How do you feel about going to Harold Hill and seeing if you could get it going?’ I accepted.

The building had been closed for about 18 months. Prior to that, it had been grilled up. Kids were running all over it. It was a difficult place. So we started to work within the community and see what we could do. We established the Alpha course and people came along. This is where I saw God at work. There was a lady who was a skinhead and led a gang. She had a real reputation, but she came and made a commitment to Christ.

There have been times when my faith was challenged. There was violence on the estate and break-ins at the hall, teenagers running wild and putting a mattress

could get losed to p it. what ed ple I saw

In my years of service, God has taught me to trust him as well as work with others. I have got so used to God being there and I often say when I’m going into a difficult situation: ‘Lord, I can’t cope with this, but I know you can.’

I’ve had encouragement all the way through my envoyship. My advice for any officer or territorial envoy is to hold on to the calling that God has placed in your heart. The circumstances you are in will change. You’ll have good times. You’ll have tricky times. But hold on to that calling and trust in God.

Parkhead Flourishing in God-given growth

Stepping up

Prior to Captain Amy-Jo’s arrival this month, the corps has been without officers for two years. During this time many people stepped up to bridge the gap.

‘We have also been blessed with a great mix of skills on our steering group,’ says Corps Mission Secretary Russell Chalmers.

When the previous officers left, we had to close our building for three months for maintenance – not an auspicious start, but the Holy Spirit had other ideas!

Building new beginnings

A few years ago we changed the front of the building, which had previously been solid and unwelcoming. Now we have big, clear windows and glass doors: people can see what’s going on.

Immediately upon the building’s reopening, God started sending us new people. None had any prior relationship with the Army. Over the years, our congregation has moved out of the area, but almost all our new members live in Parkhead and how we now make an impact through this is important. Our congregation has grown by more than 50 per cent in the past year and we now have 13 different nationalities worshipping together. Hallelujah!

Welcoming and equipping

Pendo Daudi was the first to come. Her family moved to Glasgow in May 2022. On passing the hall, Pendo knocked and Corps Secretary Flora Muir opened the door. Pendo explained she was looking for a church where her family could attend. Flora welcomed them, saying the hall would reopen the following week. The next Sunday the family attended and haven’t looked back.

Pendo shared about her work experience in community development in Tanzania. We saw her potential and asked if she would apply for our new community development manager role. She did and is now finalising a report on what we might be lacking in our community programme and how we can introduce new projects.

Seun Ogungbure and his family came to us after they asked their friend, Jennifer, which church she attended. Seun now assists with leading worship and running the weekly drop-in and food bank.

‘We’re a listening ear for anyone who wants to talk, but there’s no pressure,’ he says.

Befriending and nurturing

We’re blessed to have a fellowship of good, willing people. Flora has been critical in keeping many aspects of the corps functioning and deserves a special mention. It also speaks to the strength of our fellowship that during the Covid-19 pandemic we saw a small increase in the congregation: people didn’t feel they were isolated.

Seun and Pendo are about to start soldiership classes. Their experiences echo the sentiments of a member who told Russell: ‘We came here because the people were friendly. We stayed because we were befriended.’

As a fellowship, we try to live by John 13:34 and 35: ‘As I have loved you, so you must love one another.’ We see our role in God’s plan being to welcome and nurture people.

When someone attends, we try to give them a copy of Salvationist because it’s a good overview of what’s happening in the Army, what kind of Church we are

and what they can get involved in.

Praise and prayer

‘We’ve quite a relaxed style of worship and this hasn’t changed a lot, except that we hope to become a bit more demonstrative! We’ve just held an African praise Sunday, which was fantastic,’ says Russell. ‘We’ve also been regularly running Messy Church and Pendo is being trained in Godly play.’ We’re praying for protection at the corps because the Devil’s active wherever the Holy Spirit’s active. We’re also praying for guidance on how best to involve our new people in our mission. Ephesians 3:20 reassures us that with him we can do ‘immeasurably more’ than all we can ask or imagine. That’s certainly what God’s done with us!

All together now

Major Nigel Bovey gives the score on unity

EPHESIANS 4:1–16

LIKE many YP band members of the 1960s, my introduction to the world of brass music came through the Unity Series. These full-blown marches and selections are written in the component soprano, alto, tenor and bass of four-part harmony, with mellifluous euphonium adding colourful interest.

In our study passage, unity is Paul’s keynote. He trumpets ‘make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit’ (v3) and talks about ‘unity in the faith’ (v13). He augments this theme with motifs such as ‘one’ (vv4 to 6), ‘all’ (vv6 and 13) and ‘whole’ (vv10 and 13).

Before examining the message, we need to unearth the context. Why is Paul banging the drum for unity?

Simply because – just as he majored on love to the unloving Corinthians – there is disunity in Ephesus. There is discord, the root of which strikes a chord; an issue in which Paul is historically and emotionally invested.

Some years earlier, Paul fell out with Peter. He accused Peter of hypocrisy over his attitudes and actions towards Gentile Christians (see Galatians 2:11–21). Now, Paul faces a replay.

Paul had invested heavily in the church in the Greek city of Ephesus, winning Jewish and Gentile converts (see Acts 19). Little wonder that the imprisoned Paul is desperate for them to enjoy the freedom and unity of the Spirit.

Ephesus was the epicentre of worship of the goddess Artemis. A temple erected in her honour – one of the seven wonders of the ancient world – had stood for hundreds of years and the city had prospered from devotee

pilgrimages. Growing up in such a place would have made it easy for a local to have worshipped Artemis. In contrast, in such God-less culture, it would have been difficult to have been a devout Jew.

Gentile and Jewish converts, therefore, would have made different but equally life-changing journeys to their new-found faith in Christ. Possibly, because of their new allegiance, Gentile and Jewish Christians faced opposition from their families and former worshipping communities.

Tragically, both parties are seeing only their grievance and counting their own cost; neither is appreciating what the other is paying and how they are hurting.

The problem, as in many congregations, is one of expectation of other people – Jewish Christians expected Gentile Christians to be circumcised. Instead of confronting the issue, the Ephesian church had divided into two camps and engaged in name-calling (see Ephesians 2:11–13). On the surface, it looks like a culture war between Jewish and Gentile believers over an aspect of religious observance – equivalent to today’s tiffs over uniform, commitment or ‘worship’ songs. But it goes deeper than that. The question is: What does a Christian look like?

The word Paul uses for ‘unity’ – henotes – comes from heis, meaning ‘one’. Unity, therefore, is ‘oneness’. What does Paul’s unity look like?

Unity is being united. Knowing that oneness is precious and fragile, Paul urges his readers to ‘make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit’ (v3). The word ‘effort’ here is spoudazo, meaning ‘earnestness’, ‘diligence’ or ‘eagerness’. It is tough to make an effort to see another’s point of view while pouring

energy into substantiating ours. This ‘every effort’ means treating people who see things differently to us with love, humility, gentleness, patience and forbearance (see v2). There are no shortcuts.

PAUSE AND REFLECT

How readily do you consider where other people are coming from?

Unity is unique. Paul’s first development of the unity theme is to go double forte on the concept of ‘one’. Seven times he strikes ‘one’: body, Spirit, hope, Lord, faith, baptism, God (see vv4 to 6). He reminds his readers that – despite their cultural differences – they all experience a common new life through God’s unique salvation plan.

Unity is uniform. Again, looking beyond his readers’ culturally ingrained norms and values, Paul stresses the all-inclusive, whosoever generosity of God: ‘To each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it’ (v7). The Father has no favourite children. Referring to Gentiles and Jews, Paul writes ‘God does not show favouritism’ (Romans 2:11).

Unity is universal. Whereas we might have a tick list of qualifications to be a Christian in terms of prerequisite lifestyle, God rules no one out. Christ’s resurrection and ascension mean that God’s grace now fills ‘the whole universe’ (v10).

PAUSE AND REFLECT

What kind of person do you think can’t become a Christian?

Unity is not unison. Singing from the same hymn sheet does not require

singing the same notes. Where else the harmony! Within a church there are different roles – apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers – requiring different skills and giftings. Just as the source is common – ‘Christ himself’ – so is the aim – ‘to equip his people for works of service’ (vv11 and 12). It’s OK to be different. We don’t all have to do the same things or be involved in the same aspects of corps life. Equally, we are allowed an opinion. How, whether and to whom we express it will either enhance or detract from unity.

PAUSE AND REFLECT

How much do you want people to fit your idea of what it means to be a Christian?

Unity is unibody. Beyond being nice to each other and getting by on Sundays, there is a greater purpose to unity within a congregation. Paul links unity with becoming a mature body of people that understands and practises the gospel. The more it exercises love, the stronger it will become (see vv14 to 16).

Jesus gave only one indication as to how the Church would grow: ‘By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another’ (John 13:35). Love won another?

From January 2024, Prayer Matters is following a new prayer rhythm, to pray for renewal in this territory’s worship and mission. Each day has a theme, based on the five mission priorities. To read the unedited Prayer Matters booklet visit salvationist.org.uk/discipleship

SATURDAY 20 JULY: CARE FOR CREATION – THE MOON

Lord, thank you for the inspiration which the moon landing (55 years ago) was, and for the way it inspired children to believe in seemingly impossible things. Maker of the moon and stars, we pray that you will guide those involved in planning lunar exploration and construction projects, that they will know how to care for this unfamiliar land, treating it with respect and preserving its balance. by Major John Ager and Lyndall Bywater (UKI Boiler Room Team)

SUNDAY 21 JULY: SABBATH PRAYER – LEADERSHIP CHANGE

We pray for corps who will welcome new officers this week, for a sense of joy and anticipation at the arrival of new leaders, and for a quick forging of friendships. We pray there will be a sense of shared vision as they discern the way ahead, and a sense of expectancy for all that God will do.

by Lyndall Bywater (UKI Boiler Room Team)

MONDAY 22 JULY: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS – PARIS OLYMPICS

We pray Paris will be a joyful, harmonious place throughout the Games; for Salvationist competitors, that they will know God’s peace and share God’s love; for The Salvation Army in France, that the Games will open doors for all kinds of witness and service; for corps and centres around the world running Olympic-themed outreach events, that many will discover the reality of God’s love for them.

by Lyndall Bywater (UKI Boiler Room Team)

TUESDAY 23 JULY: SERVING AND CARING – SALVATION ARMY YOUTH SUMMER CAMPS Pray friendships will be forged and that young people will have the courage to enter wholeheartedly into worship and prayer. May they meet with the living God in ways that change their lives.

by Lyndall Bywater (UKI Boiler Room Team)

Facing the reality of not having enough officers for every corps, we pray that many will hear the call to step into leadership, following God’s will for them. Pray for a quickening of those responding to the challenge of full-time ministry, and pray for a continuing development of thinking around local leadership and the roles everyone has within the body of Christ.

by Major Brian Slinn

Appointments list 2024

THIS list is published following the General Farewell process, whereby the identifying of appointments for officers and divisional and territorial envoys accepting new responsibilities is preceded by consultation with individuals, line managers and corps/centre representatives.

It shows how all active UKI officers (in this territory, at IHQ and overseas), non-UKI officers serving in the territory and territorial and divisional envoys in corps, social services and headquarters appointments have been deployed at the General Change in July 2024. Some appointments effective subsequently are also shown. Many officers also hold additional appointments that are not listed here.

New appointments that have not been announced previously are indicated with a circumflex accent (^) and modified ones with an asterisk (*). Where necessary, a fuller description of the appointment is given. Individuals are listed in alphabetical order, regardless of seniority of appointment or rank.

Prayer

Father God, as we come to you in prayer, we thank you for all those in spiritual leadership in our territory. We pray for everyone who has received a new appointment, wherever they serve you and minister to people in the name of Jesus.

We pray for the newly commissioned lieutenants as they fulfil your calling upon their lives. Lord, in their first appointments, may they sense your presence deeply. We ask for your grace and peace for each one, and we pray for their families also as they experience this time of transition.

We pray for corps leaders who are moving to new appointments. We thank you for the prayerful decisionmaking that took place before the appointments were sent out. We ask for strength and grace for all officers and envoys involved.

We pray for the children of officers and envoys who may struggle with leaving friends and changing schools. We think too of older children, who may be leaving their family home to live independently for study or work. Lord, protect them and may they find a new community that will care for them.

Lord, we pray for all the unofficered corps too, and ask your blessing upon all who continue to lead worship and care for your people in these communities.

We pray for leaders who are taking up new responsibilities that may be different from their previous appointments. Lord, we ask that you continue to equip them and enable them as ministers of the gospel.

Lord, we bring before you everyone who is facing the prospect of change. There may be feelings of apprehension and anxiety, excitement and impatience, concern and care about many things at this time. Help us all to prayerfully support each other as we remember how often we read in your word, ‘Do not be afraid.’

We offer these prayers, in confidence, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

LIEUT-COLONEL

Called to justice and truth

ICC WALES

A SENSE of reverent expectation descended on the congregation as family, friends, invited guests and prayerful supporters gathered for the ordination and commissioning of the Defenders of Justice, reports Editor Major Julian Watchorn

On this second day of the Together 2024 weekend, the congregation were welcomed by William Booth College Principal Lieut-Colonel Judith Payne and Assistant Principal Major Althea Bawden. Each cadet was then welcomed to the platform with individual Bible verses spoken over them by members of their families.

The combined sessions of cadets sang the beautiful and apt ‘Humbly Bow’, which spoke of the dedication of bringing our lives before God. There then followed a time of prayer and musical reflection.

Micah 6:6–8 was beautifully read in Welsh and English by Megan and Eleri Sass, daughters of Cadet Paul Sass.

The Defenders of Justice then shared their dedication song before reciting the doctrines of The Salvation Army as a declaration of the beliefs on which they were making their commitments. They were charged to keep to their commitments by Chief Secretary Colonel Peter Forrest.

The ordination and commissioning was conducted by Territorial Leader Commissioner Jenine Main, who shared individual encouragement with each cadet as she carried out her duty.

A time of reflection followed. After a further congregational song, Territorial Leader Commissioner Paul Main addressed not only the new lieutenants

but also the congregation, referencing Micah 6:6–8 as he impressed that all who follow Christ should seek to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with their God.

All are called to defend justice, he declared. Referencing both Micah and Amos 5:24, he spoke of justice as an essential characteristic of God, praying for it to roll on like a river.

Just as Micah and Amos challenged the prevailing culture of their day, so we too are called to act with hearts of love to challenge injustice where we see it. It is not enough to love the idea of justice, Commissioner Paul emphasised. It needs to be evident, and it will be costly if it is to mean anything.

Following a time of appeal, the meeting concluded with ‘O Church, Arise, and Put Your Armour On’, as the congregation was urged to respond.

The afternoon’s celebration was hosted by Territorial Candidates Director Major Mark Sawyer. Responsive Scripture from Psalm 136 preceded a time of lively worship songs, which included flag-waving and dance.

Lieutenants Deborah and Jon Hampton (Oldbury) – along with their three young children, Penny, Sophia and Ezekiel – each shared an object that reminded them of God’s goodness in their daily lives. The joys of a young family in ministry were evident and a great blessing to all.

A further time of prayer was enhanced by a sung rendition in Welsh of the Lord’s Prayer by Karl Westwood, as the young family knelt at the foot of the cross.

‘It’s Yo’s’, a funky interpretation of Gowans and Larsson’s ‘If You Want It – It’s

Yours’ led us into the next section of the meeting, complete with a rap solo.

A cross section of guests representing the diversity of the territory participated in a chat show with Major Mark Sawyer, each sharing what Jesus means to them and a Bible verse that encourages them.

The new lieutenants marched in accompanied by ‘Rosehill’ and encouraged by cheers, flags, signs and air horns.

Exodus 3:1–10 was dramatically presented, introducing Moses having an encounter with God at the burning bush. This led into the message from Commissioner Jenine Main, who asked: What would make you turn aside from your ordinary life? What would stop you in your tracks and make you look up?

She reminded us that God chose to use ordinary people in extraordinary ways. Like Moses, we might have lots of excuses, but God is patient – he has all the answers. We don’t have to be extraordinary, because he is.

God is still calling his people, she concluded. Are we willing to respond, to take his light into a dark world?

Anais Spencer sang ‘Thank You for the Cross’ as the congregation were invited to stand in response to God’s call on their lives. The territorial leaders then shared their dreams for the territory and invited the congregation to respond, before a closing song and a sung benediction, ‘The Blessing’.

SALVATIONISTS from across the territory gathered in Newport for Together 2024, reports Managing Editor Ivan Radford

The event began on Saturday morning with prayer at Newport Citadel, before a prayer walk led by Major Stephen Wilson (Wales DHQ) set out to pray for and witness to the community. On the riverfront, a group enthusiastically took part in a Parkrun.

These set the tone for a weekend that called everyone present to take a stand and tell God’s story where they are.

In the year the Army celebrates 150 years of work and ministry in Wales, the weekend celebrated God’s faithfulness.

This was expressed creatively through an energetic MACA Dance workshop and a reflective art gallery, which featured work from people across the territory as they transformed second-hand books into brave, honest depictions of their life stories.

It was enjoyed through fellowship and fun in the weekend’s Engagement Space. While a marketplace introduced people to resources and opportunities, people of all ages delighted in Defenders of Justiceinspired inflatables.

It was shared during a lively community café church hosted by Major Mark Sawyer (William Booth College) and Major Kerry Coke (THQ), which included Territorial Leaders Commissioners Jenine and Paul Main being interviewed by junior solders Olivia and Owen (Newport Citadel) and Taffy Bizure (Derby Central).

It was proclaimed in music, including a joyous atrium concert by the South and Mid Wales Fellowship Band, and performances from the International Staff Band and International Staff Songsters, as well as vocal soloists.

At the heart of this central hub was Stori Duw, Ein Stori, Eich Stori (God’s Story, Our Story, Your Story), an exhibition about the history of the Army in Wales, including a stunning display knitted by Cardiff Canton members and people from the division.

God’s story and the Army’s story were brought to life during Saturday evening’s worship in John Allen – The Salvationist Navvy, written by Steph Lamplough and Paul Sharman (Music and Creative Arts).

The heartfelt 15-minute musical captured the remarkable story of Allen, a converted labourer who became a pioneer in Wales. Played by Rob Moye (THQ), Allen’s dedication to give everything he had to

share the good news resonated more than a century later. ‘I’ll take a stand and do God’s will,’ he declared with passion.

The evening included more uplifting music, including ‘Cerddoriaeth Cymru (The Music of Wales)’ from the ISB, ‘I’ve Just Seen Jesus’ by the ISS and ‘God Is in This Story’, presented by the worship band and MACA Dance. Wrexham Community Brass encouraged the congregation with the playful ‘La Bamba’, before the 130-strong Wales Chorus sang ‘Here Is Love’ in moving harmony.

The multi-generational choir, which overflowed from the stage into the auditorium, also presented ‘Dyma Gariad’, a song by Jonathan and Stephanie Mead (Morriston) commissioned for the event.

‘Dyma gariad, love that sets us free,’ they repeated powerfully, reinforcing the truth that God’s story continues today.

Commissioners Jenine and Paul recognised the part that Major David Emery

has played in that story, presenting him with a certificate of exceptional service for dedicating his gifts and commitment to the gospel in Wales.

Commissioner Jenine’s message invited everyone present to be inspired by the faithful words, loving deeds and enduring hope of the people whose stories had been shared.

Quoting 1 Thessalonians 1, she called everyone to follow the example of the early Church, so that ‘the word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people everywhere’.

‘It’s time to go public with our love for Jesus,’ she declared, ‘the reason for our faithfulness and love and hope.’

It was a rousing conclusion to the celebration of a story that, 150 years on, is still being told by the Army in Wales and beyond.

CHILDREN

AND YOUTH

LEEK The corps had a fantastic weekend celebrating its children, starting with a barbecue with more than 50 people from the community groups and parents of the Sunday school enjoying fellowship. The evening festival featured the children’s singing group, learners’ band, timbrels and a cornet solo, ‘Share My Yoke’, by nineyear-old Seth. The event raised money for the children’s work at the corps, including instruments for the learners’ band. On Sunday, Majors Steve and Jenny Forman (Coventry City) led the YP prizegiving. The meeting featured the children’s singing group, learners’ band and timbrels. – RJ

COMMUNITY

SHERINGHAM The charity shop’s deputy manager, Claire Taylor, worked with Sheringham High School to host a preloved prom night clothes sale. Held in the school hall, the event offered outfits and accessories for under £30 and raised £615 for corps funds. Claire said: ‘We helped reduce the impact of the cost of living crisis on families while promoting our care for creation values.’ Dawn Hollidge, senior deputy head teacher, said: ‘Our environmentally conscious students were thrilled to stay “green” while looking gorgeous.’ They hope to make it an annual event. – SF

SHIPLEY The school uniform hub is extending its opening hours after supporting 400 families with 1,600 items in 2023. It also prevented 320kg of textiles from going to landfill. Community Assistant Dawn Coleman said: ‘To have a good quality uniform that fits well provides dignity to children and gives them confidence.’ – AR

ISLE OF WIGHT Inspired by the Army’s doughnut lassies of the First World War, Honey’s Donuts donated sweet treats in celebration of National Doughnut Day. The corps Denim and Doughnut Ladies meet every Tuesday to create items out of recycled denim to sell in the hall. They confirmed the doughnuts were truly scrumptious! – RP

Praising together

NEWPORT CATHEDRAL

THE International Staff Band and Songsters joined together for Gwyl Gyda’n Gilydd (Together Festival).

After a welcome from the dean of the cathedral, Divisional Commander Lieut-Colonel Jonathan Roberts greeted the capacity congregation and mentioned special guests, including the mayor and mayoress of Newport, Territorial Leaders Commissioners Jenine and Paul Main, International Secretaries for Europe Commissioners Ced and Lyn Hills and retired Commissioners Gisèle Gowans and Freda Larsson.

The DC highlighted this year’s 150th anniversary of The Salvation Army in Wales, which was acknowledged when the ISB got the programme off to a rousing start with ‘Men of Harlech’.

The ISS entered and stood in the aisles to sing ‘Introit: from Psalm 24’, then formed up for ‘Jesus Himself Drew Near’, sensitively preparing the way for an opening prayer by ISB Executive Officer Lieut-Colonel Paul Kingscott.

Pieces from the ISB included Peter Graham’s ‘Seize the Day!’ and Leslie

Condon’s classic ‘The Present Age’, while the ISS brought the powerful ‘I Have Seen the Glory of the Lord’ and two songs by Stephen Pearson and Richard Phillips: ‘Vita Mea Domino’ and ‘The Calls of Christ’, to a new arrangement of the Welsh tune ‘David of the White Rock’.

The congregation was treated to four contrasting solos: ‘Caprice for Cornet’ by Gavin Lamplough, ‘Only in Sleep’ by Richard Woodrow (flugelhorn) and vocal solos ‘Ave Maria’ by Gemma Hinchliffe and, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, ‘God Help the Outcasts’ by Hazel Launn.

In his devotional thought, Chief Secretary Colonel Peter Forrest referred to the Welsh word cwtch, which means a warm and safe embrace, and encouraged everyone to open themselves to God’s cwtch. He quoted the words ‘then God comes near and puts his arms around me’ from the song ‘When God Comes Near’, which the ISS then sang.

The ISB filled the ancient cathedral with Kenneth Downie’s majestic ‘King of Heaven’ before ISS Executive Officer LieutColonel Jayne Roberts prayed and the ISS again took their places in the aisles to sing the benediction, ‘The Lord Bless You and Keep You’, ending a wonderful evening of reflection and praise. – AR

LONGTON The corps recently celebrated 140 years of ministry. Celebrations included a workshop with the learners’ band, and a few members of Sale Band, followed by an incredible concert. There was a presentation of the story of Moses in music, plus the premiere of a composition by Major Martin Cordner. Band Secretary Ali Thornton-Dean (Sale) led the Sunday meeting using the music of ‘Guardian of My Soul’ and ‘Light of the World’. The weekend finished with an open-air meeting that sparked many conversations. – CO
