As I write - we’re 8 days from the opening ceremony of the Paralympics. If we were impressed by what the Olympic athletes did - how much more amazing will it be to witness those competing despite significant disability. Competing in the games will be athletes who were born blind or missing a limb, there’ll be athletes with cerebral palsy and paraplegia, some injured in car accidents, at least one shark attack survivor and even soldiers wounded by land mines. How many when faced with such hardship would dream of reaching such heights? How many would spurn common wisdom and strive to prove it wrong? As I wait to enjoy the games I can’t help but think of the Adidas slogan - ‘Impossible is Nothing’. If it makes a good tagline for the Paralympics, it’s equally well suited to the Bible. How could a man with a speech impediment (Moses) change the mind of Pharaoh? How could an elderly barren woman (Sarah) give birth to a nation? How could two bad-tempered brothers (James and John) build a church founded on peace and love? For the God who crafted the stars and set them in

place, who dreamt up the wondrous variety of life around us and sustains all things, who defeated sin through the death of his son and defeated death 3 days later - impossible is nothing.
have what it takes? Let’s enjoy and be inspired by the paralympians, but let’s also remember that we can do anything through Christ who gives us strength (Phil 4:13),
How often do you say - I can’t do that? It won’t work? I don’t

God and Me We start a new series entitled “God and Me” where members of our Church Family tell of what God has done for them.
I compare God to having a good friend. He goes through the good and bad times with me and like a good friend He will love me no matter what. I have gone through a few life threatening illnesses in my time and I have felt God has kept me
alive to fulfil some great task, for now perhaps it's just for me being me. So I continue to treat God as my good friend and wait for that task He has in mind. Christine Hadfield
Introducing our Newest Team Member Hello! I'm Sian Jenkins, from South Wales. I am here as your new children and family worker and really look forward to getting to meet you all. I have been in the Salvation Army since I was a baby, it has become a
very large and very important part of my life. I was Junior soldier at the age of 7 and joined in with everything I could, however it wasn't until I was 17 that I fully accepted Jesus into my heart and took Senior Soldier classes. I then went on to take part in a gap

year course called Essential - run by ALOVEUK in the Salvation Army, Which I enjoyed so much that I also did Essential 2. In both these years I learnt a lot not only about Children and family work, but also Youth work. I also learnt a lot about who I am and what I believe God wants me to do for the next few years of my life. I am passionate about telling young people about how much Jesus loves them and getting to know the many unique differences that each young person has, and encouraging them to appreciate them. I enjoy meeting new people and spending time getting to know them and being a friend to everyone. I love singing, anywhere and everywhere. Don't be surprised if you hear me before you see me. I really enjoy walking near rivers, streams, water fountains and the sea, it really helps me to see and appreciate the amazing things God has done for us. I love sitting under the stars and looking for the brightest star and seeing the face in the moon, it really helps me to see how important we are to God and how much he loves and cares for us.
Page 3
If you were to ask some of my friends what they think of me they'd probably use words like this; Happy, bubbly, always singing, caring, loving, loud, energetic and enthusiastic. I only hope that some of you will be able to see some of these things in me and that I can, with you, shine with the love of Jesus. So to finish, I really look forward to the work I am going to be doing here in this place & I really hope God uses me, to bless you & the people in our community. I've not come to work for you - But with you and with the people in this community. As one we can do good things, as a team we can do great things in God's name! My aim for this year 'To put a bit of love where there isn't any' Much love & many blessings Sian

“What am I supposed to do with this?” said the motorist as the Police Constable handed him a receipt for his speeding fine. “Hang on to it,” said the Constable, “when you collect three you get a bicycle.” A Scotsman, and Englishman and an Irishman wanted to get in to see the Olympic Games but didn’t have tickets so the Scotsman picked up a manhole cover, went to the gate and said, “McTavish, Scotland, discus” he was admitted. The Englishman put a length of scaffolding over his shoulder, went to the gate and said, “Waddington-Smythe, England, pole vault” he was admitted. Then seeing how easily they got in, the Irishman tucked a roll of barbed wire under his arm, went to the gate and announced, “O’Malley, Ireland, fencing” Three boys were bragging how tough they were. The first boy said “I’m so tough I can wear out a pair of shoes in a week.” The second boy said, “That’s nothing, I can wear out a pair of jeans in a day.” The third boy said, “Well I can wear my Grandma out in an hour.” On the Health and Safety course, the Fire Officer asked Mrs Frobrisher, “In the event of a fire, what steps would you take?” “Very big ones” she replied. A little boy on his first day at school, went to the teacher at playtime, and said, “This school is very hard”. Putting her arm round him, she gently asked him why he thought that. “Well, when you bump into it, it hurts” he said. And finally, some home remedies:If you are choking on an ice cube, don’t panic. Drink a cup of boiling water and the blockage will be instantly removed. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives – you will soon find it unwise to cough. Bad toothache? Hit your thumb with a hammer and you will soon forget the toothache. He who laughs last, thinks slowest. Keep smiling

Gardening Hints By Dave Cox
To improve the look of your lawn, vigorously rake it with a spring tined rake to take up moss and thatch. (Very hard work). Apply an Autumn (NOT Summer) feed and then aerate it with a garden fork. (Monotonous task). Give Camellia’s and Rhododendron's a feed of ericaceous fertilizer every two weeks or so to fatten up buds for better blooms next year. Take cuttings of Pensitemons and Fuchsias. Dig up and dry Gladioli bulbs and store in frost free conditions. Lift, divide and re-plant clumps of Snowdrops and Primrose/Primulas. Prune climbing and rambling Roses.

Community Services Managers update I would like to start with a thank you to all of you who helped and supported the Table Top Sale. Although numbers attending were disappointing, it was a great opportunity to spend time with each other and those of our community who came in. We are starting to think about the groups that have had the summer off, coming back and look forward to giving them a warm welcome. There will be new families to meet both in Bright Sparks and Teddy Toddlers and we have two new groups starting. One group on Friday mornings who will be cane, rush and seagrass weaving, this is organised by the U3A. We will
also be hosting a group who is out of their building whilst it is being refurbished and this will be on a Wednesday evening until mid October. Zumba finished back in June, due to lack of interest/ energy! But Total Dance for children is going very well. The next big fund raiser at the hall will be the Christmas Fair on the 24th November. We really need some fresh ideas for this, if you can think of a stall or activity that we can do this year then please let me know. We would love to see you in the coffee shop during the week.
