Partners in Mission
Hi kids! More than 100 years ago, William Booth asked members of The Salvation Army to give money to help poor people in other countries. A Salvation Army officer named Major John Carleton wanted to help, but he didn’t have any extra money to give. Major Carleton decided he would give up his dessert every day for a year and offer that money to William Booth to help others. William Booth was so impressed with Major Carleton’s idea, he asked other members of The Salvation Army to do the same thing. William Booth called it a SelfDenying League. Today in Canada and Bermuda we call it Partners in Mission. We still try to give up something small for a few weeks, like a treat we buy on the way home from school. It reminds us of how much we have compared with many others around the world. Then we donate the money we’ve saved to help people around the world as part of a global Salvation Army family. What can you give up for a few weeks this year?

he Salvation Army has many children’s homes around the world. These homes are places where children who are alone, without the support of parents or other family members, can live and receive all the essentials that they need. They receive food, medical care, education and a place to call home. Deby (top right photo) is 15 years old and she has been living at The Salvation Army’s Denpasar Girls Home in Indonesia for 11 years. Deby has never met her parents but she thinks of the staff and other children at the home as her family. Even though Deby has never lived with her family, she has always had the support of the Salvation Army children’s home. She is able to be involved in all the regular activities that other children her age would do. She likes to participate in exercise class, singing practice and dance. She is also learning how to cook and bake. But her favourite activity is knitting. Deby dreams of becoming an IT expert after she finishes school.
