Summer is almost here which can only mean one thing. It’s time to grab the tent and head to the great outdoors! What do you like to do when you go camping? I like to eat s’mores and tell stories around the campfire after dark. In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about a man named Nicodemus. One night, he stayed up late to ask Jesus a question. He wanted to know how to become a follower of God. Jesus told him he had to be “born again.” But, what did He mean by that? Read the story to find out.

What does the sun drink out of? Our words are powerful. Proverbs 18:21 tells us that what we say has “the power of life and death.” We can use our words to sing praises to Jesus. Or, we can speak up if we see a classmate being bullied. In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about a time God asked His people to use their voices. Joshua was leading them to the Promised Land. It was a long journey, but God took care of His people. At one point, they had no choice but to stop. Read the Bible story to find out what they had to do to keep on going.

oshua was leading God’s people through a desert to the Promised Land.
God’s people had been looking for it for a long time. They knew it would be wonderful. Joshua knew that the people who lived there already might not want God’s people to come there. But Joshua knew that God would help His people go into the Promised Land. One day, they came to Jericho, a city with BIG walls. God told Joshua: “March around the city walls every morning for six days. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times and have seven priests blow seven trumpets. After the trumpets blast, have all the people give a loud shout.”
The seventh time they marched around, those great walls came roaring down! The people of God had won the day.

Hi kids! This Sunday is Father’s Day—a time to celebrate our dads, uncles and grandpas. Do you have a gift for your dad yet? If not, there is a craft in this issue of Just for Kids that you can use. Did you know that dads play a big role in history? The very first dad was Adam. He was 130 years old when his son, Seth, was born (see Genesis 5:3). Then, there is Abraham who God made the “father of many nations” (Genesis 17:5). And last but not least, there’s God. If your dad doesn’t live with you or maybe you can’t see him this year, know that God is always your heavenly Father. He loves us so much that He adopted us as His children through His Son, Jesus Christ (see Ephesians 1:5). Join me in wishing all the fathers across the Canada and Bermuda Territory a Happy Father’s Day!

The Salvation Army and Canada have roots in the United Kingdom. Each year in July we celebrate two special events because of our British history. On July 1, we wish our family and friends a happy Canada Day to remember when three British colonies became the Dominion of Canada, the first step on Canada’s journey to independence from the United Kingdom. One day later, we celebrate the beginning of The Salvation Army on Founders’ Day. But which came first, The Salvation Army or Canada? If you said The Salvation Army, you’re correct! The Salvation Army was founded in 1865. Canada became a dominion in 1867. This year, let’s celebrate the unique history we share with our mates (friends) across the sea. Happy Canada Day and happy Founders’ Day!

very year, The Salvation Army celebrates Founders’ Day on July 2.
Do you know why? On July 2, 1865, William Booth held his first outdoor meeting in East London, England, telling people the good news about Jesus. The Salvation Army, led by William and Catherine Booth, was founded on that day. By 1867, the Booths had developed a ministry that offered basic schooling, reading rooms, penny banks, soup kitchens and relief aid to the poor.

When it began, the Army was called the Christian Mission. It became The Salvation Army in 1878. The Army held its first meeting in Canada, in London, Ont., on June 1, 1882. The Army has been active in Bermuda since 1896. Currently, the Army has more than 2,100 junior soldiers in the Canada and Bermuda Territory. The Salvation Army is active in 132 countries worldwide.
