Role models are people we look up to and who inspire us to be good, confident, kind and caring.

My role model is Jesus.

Jesus loves everybody, no matter who they are or where they come from. As Christians, we want to be like Jesus and to treat others as He does—with respect and love.

In this week’s issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read a story about God’s generosity. I don’t know about you, but I want to be generous just like Him! This week, make a list of all your role models (including God!) and ask yourself, “How can I be like them?”

esus arrived at a town called Sychar and was so tired from His trip that He sat down beside a well for a little rest. When a Samaritan woman came to get some water from the well, Jesus said to her: “Would you give Me a drink?”

The woman answered: “But our peoples are enemies. How can You ask me for a drink?”

Abigail Makes Peace 1 Samuel 25:1-35

Hi kids!

Do you like to play sports?

I love playing volleyball on the beach with my friends.

There are so many great sports to play in the summertime—soccer, basketball, lacrosse and football.

When we watch live games in person or on the TV, we sometimes see referees running around who make sure everybody is playing fair. If they see a fight between two players, they will blow their whistle, stop the fight and keep the peace.

Peace is important to God. He wants everyone to make peace with one another and to love one another. In the Bible, 2 Corinthians 13:11 says: “Finally, brothers and sisters, be joyful! Work to make things right with one another. Help one another and agree with one another. Live in peace. And the God who gives love and peace will be with you.”

The Bible is filled with stories of peacekeepers.

One of them was named Abigail (like me!) and she helped others make peace when they were angry with each other. We can be peacekeepers like Abigail, too. Read this issue of Just for Kids to find out how.

Meanwhile, David and his men had been on the run from King Saul for a long time. One day, they ended up near Nabal’s animals. David was hungry and thirsty. He sent one of his men to ask Nabal for some food. Nabal was a mean man, so he said no. David was angry and got ready to attack his home. A servant told Abigail about David’s plans.

When she found out that Nabal had not given them any food, Abigail sent her servants to bring lots of food to David and his men. She even went with her servants to deliver the food. There, Abigail asked David to forgive her for what her husband had done. She took the blame, even though she had done no wrong.

David gave the Lord’s blessing to Abigail that day, saying, “You have shown a lot of good sense.”

Because of Abigail’s good choice, her home was saved that day.

• Pray. God hears our prayers and when life feels crazy, He can help grant us peace. Try saying this short prayer: “Lord, give me peace.”

• Try breathing exercises. Slowly, take a deep breath in through your nose. Hold your breath for five seconds and let it out through your mouth.

• Meditate. In a quiet room, sit still and close your eyes. Breathe and think about things that make you feel calm, such as the beach or a sunny day. (It’s OK to fall asleep!)

Hi kids!

Imagine the phone rings. You answer it, say hello and on the other end is God. He tells you that you’re His special helper and sends you off on an important mission: Go spread the word about God. Help others in the name of Jesus and tell the world about His awesome powers.

In The Salvation Army, we commission new “officers” (or pastors) to do just this. This weekend, the annual “commissioning” service is happening in Winnipeg.

o you know what the word “commissioning” means? Usually, when a person is “commissioned,” it means they have been given a task to do.

In the Old Testament of the Bible, prophets were commissioned to preach of God’s love and mercy to Lieutenants Marco Herrera Lopizic and April Barthau were commissioned in 2021 the Israelites. In the New Testament, Jesus commissioned His disciples to spread the good news of salvation.

The Salvation Army has special schools that men and women attend because they feel called by God to become Salvation Army officers. After two years of training at these schools, these men and women are commissioned. They become “lieutenants” at Salvation Army corps and other ministries. It is an exciting time for them as they begin to realize their awesome responsibility as God’s servants.

A Man of Patience

Hi kids!

It can be really hard to be patient sometimes.

Perhaps you know the feeling. You want to play a video game, but you have to wait until after dinner. Or you’re told to wait your turn in line before you can go on the swings at the park.

Being patient is more than just waiting, though. It means going through an unpleasant situation without complaining or getting angry.

Now that’s hard!

In the Bible, we can read the story of Abraham. He knew how to be patient.

God promised him that he would have a son. Abraham had faith in God. But he didn’t have a son until 10 years after God made the promise. Abraham believed God and waited without getting angry at Him. This week, if you find yourself in a difficult situation, ask God to help you be more patient.

braham loved God. He was married to Sarah and had a nephew called Lot. Abraham had a large amount of land and plenty of cows and servants, but Abraham had no children.

When Abraham was an old man, God told him that he would have a son.

More than 10 years later, Abraham again received a message from God. This time, the message was that Sarah would have a son by the next year.

Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 when Isaac, their son, was born. God kept His promise to Abraham and Sarah— they just had to be patient.

Tortoises walk at a speed of 0.3 kilometres per hour. That means that it takes tortoises one whole hour to walk 0.3 kilometres—it only takes humans three minutes! That’s pretty slow! Tortoises must be very patient.
