ISSUE22 Did You Know?

Butterflies don’t taste with their mouths like humans. They taste with their feet! They have special taste sensors in their feet that help them locate food. They don’t eat like humans either. Instead of chewing, they have a straw-like tongue that helps them slurp up liquid food such as nectar.

Did you know that a butterfly doesn’t start off as a butterfly? Every butterfly begins as a tiny egg that hatches into a caterpillar. The caterpillar grows until it is time to build a hardened shell around its body, called a chrysalis. While the caterpillar sleeps inside the chrysalis, its body changes. Finally, it breaks free as a beautiful butterfly.

When people choose to become Christians, they become a new person, too. They become more like Jesus. In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about Paul, a man who disliked Christianity until he met Jesus. Paul chose to believe in Him and it transformed his life.

Paul Becomes a Believer

Acts 9:1-9

Before he was a follower of Jesus, the Apostle Paul did not like Christians. He wanted them to stop telling others about Jesus. He tried to have them put in prison or even sentenced to death.

One day, as Paul was walking into a city called Damascus, a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground. He heard a voice speak to him. “Why are you opposing Me?” the voice said.

“Who are You, Lord?” Paul asked.

“I am Jesus,” He replied. “I am the one you are opposing. Now get up and go into the city. There you will be told what you must do.”

When Paul stood up and opened his eyes, he could not see. He was blind for three days, and he did not eat or drink anything. Instead, he prayed. Once Paul chose to believe in Jesus, he could see again. Then he no longer disliked Christians. He became a missionary and told many people about Jesus .

Ananias Helps Paul

I think that math is hard. Addition, division, multiplication—all the numbers and symbols can be confusing. Sometimes, when I would go to school for a math test, I would be afraid and worried that I would not know the answers. At school, we know that if we are stuck or have a question, we can raise our hands and the teacher will come help us. God is a teacher, too. God helps us when we are struggling. He helps us when we are afraid or sad, and when we think we can’t do something, God is there to encourage us.

In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about a disciple named Ananias who was used by God to help Paul when he could not see. And remember, it is always OK to ask for help from your teachers, parents, friends and God.

ISSUE 23

Before the Apostle Paul became a Christian, the Lord appeared to him and sent him to a city called Damascus to pray and learn about Jesus. For three days, Paul could not see. In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord had a vision for him—to go to Paul, place his hands on him and help him see again.

But Ananias had heard rumours that Paul did not like Christians, and he was unsure.

The Lord had a bigger plan for Paul. He said to Ananias, “Go! I have chosen this man to work for Me.” So, Ananias went to the house where Paul was praying and entered it. He placed his hands on Paul. “You saw the Lord Jesus. He appeared to you on the road as you were coming here. He has sent me so that you will be able to see again. You will be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Then, Paul could see again. He stood up and was baptized, and after eating some food, he got his strength back. Paul became a Christian and God used him to share Jesus with others.

Summer Break!

Hi kids!

This week we celebrate Father’s Day, a time to recognize and appreciate our dads, grandfathers, uncles, church leaders, father figures and other role models in our lives. Maybe you have a fun activity planned, a gift or a homemade card to thank them for all they do.

Along with all the father figures on earth, we also have a heavenly Father— God. He is a loving and patient father to us all. On Father’s Day, we can celebrate God and all He does for us.

1 Corinthians 8:6—But for us there is only one God. He is the Father. All things came from Him, and we live for Him. And there is only one Lord. He is Jesus Christ. All things came because of Him, and we live because of Him.

What does this mean?

God is our Father because He made us, just like He made the earth, the soil, the sky and the sea. Everything is God’s creation—including us!

Psalm 68:5-6—God is in His holy temple. He is a father to children whose fathers have died. He takes care of women whose husbands have died. God gives lonely people a family.

God is a father to everybody, even people who do not have fathers. He is there for people who are lonely, no matter who they are.

1 John 3:1—See what amazing love the Father has given us! Because of it, we are called children of God. And that’s what we really are!

We are called children of God and He loves us, just like the dads in our lives love us.

Seahorses are the only species in the animal kingdom where the male births its babies.

Did You Know?

Once a mother penguin lays her egg, she returns to the sea to eat fish. For two months, it is the father penguin’s job to keep the egg warm until the mother returns.

Male Arctic wolves are very protective of their young. While the whole pack helps raise the pups, the father wolf helps hunt, guard and protect his family.

Hi kids!

I like to write, but sometimes I get stuck and can’t figure out what to write about. When this happens, I look to some of my favourite things to help inspire me: sunshine, books, music and sometimes a good snack. What inspires you to be creative?

As Christians, we can be inspired by God. He encourages us to love each other, be kind and do good things for people. Everything that The Salvation Army does to help others is inspired by God and His love for us.

This week, many Salvationists, officers and friends will come together in Toronto for INSPIRE 2023

Conference and Congress where we will sing, pray, learn and talk about God and all the ways we can share His love with others. You can read more about what’s happening at congress in this issue of Just for Kids.

Will you be at the congress? Maybe I’ll see you there!

What inspires you?

Inspire Congress

Congress is a weekend-long event in Toronto that will be filled with many exciting activities such as a welcome celebration, an outdoor carnival, a march of witness and a special program just for you!

ISSUE25

It will be extra awesome to see General Brian Peddle and Commissioner Rosalie Peddle, the international leaders of The Salvation Army, who will travel all the way from London, England, to be part of the festivities. And not only will there be great church services filled with singing and praising God but there will also be a special ceremony called commissioning taking place. That’s when men and women who have studied to become Salvation Army officers are commissioned and ordained to take on the important job of going out into the world to share the love of Jesus and help others. That is a big responsibility!

Then, Salvationists and officers will attend a special service to celebrate all that God does for us. The congress weekend ends with a march of witness, which is like a parade through the streets of Toronto.

The theme for this year’s congress is INSPIRE. The word “inspire” means to fill someone with a feeling or ability to do something, especially something creative. In The Salvation Army, we are filled with God’s love—a superpower that helps us achieve great things!

The first Salvation Army flag was presented by Catherine Booth in 1878. Read what the colours of the flag mean and then colour the picture.

YELLOW – the star at the centre represents the fire of the Holy Spirit

RED – the middle section represents the blood of Jesus

BLUE – the border represents the holiness of God
