Hi kids! Usain Bolt is one of the greatest Olympic athletes of all time. He has won eight gold medals for how fast he runs. By the age of 12, he was the fastest sprinter at his school. At 15, he became the youngest world junior champion. By 21, he won his first Olympic gold medal. Usain Bolt didn’t wake up one morning and decide to compete in the Olympics. He has been training his whole life to be the best runner in the world.

The Olympics have been around since the time of the Apostle Paul. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Paul uses an Olympic race as an example of how we should live. He warns us that in a race only one person gets the prize. Back then, winners would get a crown made of olive leaves. Imagine training so hard to get a prize made of leaves! “They do it to get a crown that will not last,” Paul says. “But we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” Paul is talking about the gift of eternal life. If Olympians would run for leaves, how much more should we value the crown Jesus has for us? Paul tells us how. “Run in a way that will get you the prize.” We must keep our finish line, heaven, in mind. As you start a new week, how will you live for God? You can read your Bible, pray, love God and love your neighbour.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day— a time to celebrate how special our moms are. We can also recognize our grandmothers, aunts and family friends who love us.
Going back in time, the first Mother’s Day was held in 1908. A memorial was held for Ann Jarvis, a peace activist in the American Civil War. She had helped wounded soldiers on both sides. Her daughter, Anna, wanted a special day for mothers. She believed a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.” Like Ann Jarvis, our own moms are heroic in their own unique way. The Bible tells us how we can respond to our moms with thankful hearts. “Her children stand up and call her blessed,” reads Proverbs 31:28. God also wants us to respect our mothers and fathers (see Exodus 20:12). If you don’t have a gift for your mom yet, you can colour in the flowers in this issue of Just for Kids and give them to her. To all the special women across the Canada and Bermuda Territory, Happy Mother’s Day!

How do we know what to say when we pray? Jesus gave us an example that we can follow. This is what He said: “When you pray, this is what you should say. ‘Father, may Your name be honoured. May Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we also forgive everyone who sins against us. Keep us from falling into sin when we are tempted’ ” (Luke 11:2-4).

Which two are identical?
We can pray these exact words, or we can use this to help us say our own prayer. It starts with putting God first. Then, we remember that Jesus is coming back to earth. Next, we ask for our daily needs, such as food and water. After, we ask Jesus to forgive our sins. We also ask Him to forgive people who may have hurt us. Finally, we can ask that He will help us not sin. Your prayer might look something like this: Dear heavenly Father, I glorify Your name above all other names. I pray that I will live like Jesus is coming back to earth soon. Please provide food, clothing and water for me today. Forgive my sins today. Please also forgive my friends who hurt my feelings. I pray that You help us not sin. Amen.
Write a prayer to God using the example in Luke:
In this issue of Just for Kids, you can try writing your own prayer following Jesus’ example. I hope you continue to practise praying to God.

Name Game
Hi kids!
Help name the kids by writing each letter in the correct box.
What is your name? By now, you probably know that my name is Leigha. My parents chose it for me the day I was born. When they want to get my attention, they call me by my name. So do my friends, relatives and other people. A name helps us know who someone is.
Then Jesus asked, “Who do you say I am?” One of the disciples, named Simon, had an answer. “You are the Messiah. You are the Son of the living God,” he said. Simon knew Jesus’ name. How? Because God had told him. Jesus renamed Simon as Peter because of the favour God had shown him. You can read the full Bible story in Matthew 16:13-20. The question Jesus asked His disciples many years ago still applies today. Who do you think Jesus is? If you know who Jesus is, take time this week to practise telling someone about Him.

Then a woman came in. She was a widow and was very poor because she had no one to look after her. She put two small copper coins into the offering box. These coins were worth much less than a penny. Jesus asked His disciples to come to Him. He said, “What I’m about to tell you is true. That poor widow has put more into the
offering box than all the others. The rich people gave a lot because they have a lot of money. But she gave even though she is poor. She put in everything she had. She gave all she had to live on.” “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
