Paul in Prison

Hi kids!

Acts 16:16-34

T

he Apostle Paul and his friend, Silas, were visiting the town of Philippi when they met a female slave who was possessed by a spirit. They prayed for her and she was healed. But the men who owned her were angry. Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown in jail because they healed her.

Late that night in jail, Paul and Silas were praying and singing songs to God. Suddenly there was a powerful earthquake. It shook the prison from top to bottom. All at once the prison doors flew open. Everyone’s chains came loose.

When the jailer woke up and saw what happened, he was terrified. He asked Paul and Silas, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul and Silas told him to believe in Jesus and they were set free.

November 11 is Remembrance Day, the day when we remember all the soldiers who fought and died to keep Canada safe.

Did you know that many Salvation Army workers went to places where wars were being fought and helped people?

The soldiers were scared and a long way from home. The Army reminded them that God loved them, wherever they were.

While we may not be facing any wars right now—and we thank God for that—we all go through times when life is hard, when we struggle to find anything good about our situations. How do we keep going when it seems like everything is going wrong?

In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about how God can help you be content when times are tough. Read the Bible story to find out how.

In his life, Paul had many good experiences. He met Jesus, and he got to travel and tell people about God! But a lot of not-so-great things happened, too, like being thrown in prison.

But Paul had a secret to get through the tough times. He knew how to be OK in any circumstance, and to thank God wherever he was. In Philippians 4:12-13, Paul wrote: “I have learned the secret of being content no matter what happens…. I can do all this by the power of Christ. He gives me strength.”

Whenever you face ups and downs in your life, remember to talk to God about all of them. He knows exactly what you’re going through, and He can give you what you need to find contentment.

Hi kids!

When I was young, my parents always got me and my brothers chocolate Advent calendars in the lead-up to Christmas.

In case you’ve never had one before, you get a chocolate every day of December until the 25th.

One year, I had a genius idea: rather than eat one chocolate a day, I would eat them ALL in one glorious feast! And when I finished mine, I ate some of my brothers’ chocolates, too. When my parents saw what I had done, they were not impressed. I got in a lot of trouble—and there was no more chocolate for me for the rest of the month. Being greedy, ultimately, just made me miserable.

I was acting a lot like King Ahab, who you’ll read about in this issue of Just for Kids. His story reminds us that we need to learn to be content with what we have. Let’s be generous instead of greedy.

A Greedy King

ong ago, there was a king named Ahab.

He wanted a certain vineyard, which is a farm where grapes are grown. But that vineyard belonged to a man named Naboth.

So Ahab said to Naboth, “Let me have your vineyard. I’ll trade you a better vineyard for it.

Or, if you prefer, I’ll pay you what it’s worth.”

His wife, Jezebel, found him and asked, “Why are you in such a bad mood?”

Ahab told her what happened with Naboth. Jezebel said, “Get a hold of yourself—you’re the king of Israel! I’ll get you Naboth’s vineyard.”

But Naboth said no.

“The land has been in my family forever,” he explained.

Jezebel did something terrible so her husband could have the vineyard. She arranged for Naboth to be killed.

Ahab was so angry.

He went home and sulked in his room.

God told the prophet Elijah what had happened.

Elijah came to condemn Ahab. When Ahab heard what Elijah said, he tore his clothes.

He stopped eating. He regretted what he did.

Manna in the Desert

Bread from Heaven Exodus 16

A

fter God helped Moses and the Israelites escape from Egypt (see Exodus 14-15), they found themselves in a desert. It was dry and hot and the Israelites were really hungry.

They didn’t have any food to eat and they started to complain. They forgot that God would take care of them.

Then God told Moses that He was going to give the people food from heaven.

The food would appear every morning.

The next morning, strange white flakes appeared on the ground. “This bread is from the Lord,” Moses told the people.

The people called the bread manna. It tasted like crackers made with honey. Every day, the people went out and gathered the bread. Everyone had enough to eat—no one was hungry anymore.

Gifts of Hope

hristmas is a time of giving. We offer presents to our families and friends, just as the Wise Men gave the baby Jesus gifts after He was born.

This season, we can also give gifts to people in need. The Salvation Army has a program called Gifts of Hope, which helps people in other countries. Here are two programs supported by Gifts of Hope:

Students Learn to Sew in the Congo This past year, 40 students finished a Salvation Army program where they learned how to sew. With sewing skills, they can earn money by making clothes. At graduation, they received a special sewing kit, which included a new sewing machine.

A Safe Place to Play in Mozambique In Mozambique, a storm hit the community of Xai Xai and destroyed their outdoor playground. The Canada and Bermuda Territory provided support to rebuild the playground.
