If I asked you to write a list of your favourite things, what would you put on it? What makes you feel happy, excited, peaceful and good?

I know what I would put on my list: my family members, friends and pets. Some of my favourite things are freshly baked cookies, flowers from the garden, autumn leaves and sunshine. I love drinking tea, reading new books and learning new recipes. All these things make me feel good, and all these things come from God. We can thank Him for everything we have.

Every good and perfect gift is from God. This kind of gift comes down from the Father who created the heavenly lights. These lights create shadows that move. But the Father does not change like these shadows.

What does this mean?

—James 1:17 God filled the world with wonderful things and He gave us the ability to enjoy them. He created nature and everything in it. He gave us our senses so that we could see, hear and taste things that we love. He created musicians to make music, writers to write books and chefs to cook yummy food. All of these are gifts from God, and we can trust Him to always provide for us.

Hi kids!

One summer, my mom gave me a pink bicycle. It had a white basket on the front to carry my toys and belongings, gold and silver tinsel that hung off the handlebars, and training wheels. She taught me to ride it on the sidewalk out front of my house and when I finally learned, I felt unstoppable! I could ride with my sister around the playground, to the library and up the street to my friend’s house.

Riding bikes can be so much fun, and for many people around the world, bikes are an affordable and safe mode of transportation that allows them to go to work and school.

Read this issue of Just for Kids to learn how The Salvation Army’s Gifts of Hope program helps make a difference in the lives of people around the world by providing bicycles and other important gifts.

does this mean?

As Christians, we are asked by God to do good for others. This means to treat them with kindness and respect, always do the right thing and be truthful, share what you have with others and help people when they need it. God loves us and He is happy when people show that love to one another.

The Salvation Army Gifts of Hope program delivers very special gifts to people around the world that change their lives. Here are some examples:

The Gift of Bicycles

We all love riding bicycles; it can be so much fun!

Farmers in Malawi receive bicycles through Gifts of Hope, providing safe transportation to markets where they sell the food they grow and make money for their families. The gift of a bicycle brings smiles to many faces and hope for a bright future.

The Gift of Clean, Safe Water

Access to clean, safe drinking water is important to our health. It may seem like a simple gift, but it has a big impact. The Salvation Army’s project in Rwimiyaga, a province in Rwanda, provides safe drinking water to more than 6,000 people, helping families and communities live healthier lives.

Together, we’re making a difference, one gift at a time! Ask your corps officer how you can get involved with Gifts of Hope.

Answers: bike; car; bus; scooter.

Hi kids!

When I was in Grade 3, I was invited to a birthday party for a friend in my class. My mom took me to the store to pick out a birthday gift for her and I was excited to look at all the toys. I chose a ballerina Barbie doll that wore a pretty pink tutu. I had a lot of Barbies at home, but I did not have that one. When it came time to wrap up the gift and give it to my friend, I wanted to keep the Barbie for myself. I asked my mom if we could give a different gift instead. But she told me that we should be generous and happy to give a friend a special gift without feeling upset or jealous. It turns out that my friend really loved the Barbie, and I am glad I gave it to her!

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give. You shouldn’t give if you don’t want to. You shouldn’t give because you are forced to. God loves a cheerful giver.

—2 Corinthians 9:7

What does this mean?

We should not choose to give to others because we have to but because we want to. God gave us the best gift when He sent Jesus to earth to save us from our sins. We can look to Him as an example of how to be generous and kind.

Hi kids!

What does “love” look like to you? When I say the word “love,” you might think about a big red heart on Valentine’s Day, or a friend or family member getting married. Maybe you think about your parents who show how much they love you by hugging you and taking care of you.

When I think of the word “love,” I think about my dog, who gets very excited and wags his tail when he sees me because he loves me. I think about my family and how important they are to me. I know that my mom loves me because she is supportive. I know that my friends love me because they are there for me when I need help.

The word “love” reminds me of books, movies and music that tell stories about love. But the greatest love story ever told is the one about Jesus. He showed us what love really is, and how we can be like Him and show love, too.

Did You Know?

Penguins take good care of one another. In cold arctic temperatures, they keep themselves and each other warm by huddling together in large groups, taking turns being on the outside of the huddle. They work together to take care of babies, with the male penguin protecting the egg and keeping it warm while the female penguin returns to the water to hunt and eat. Some penguin species even mate for life, including chinstrap, gentoo, macaroni and royal penguins.

Jesus Loves You

We know what love is because Jesus Christ gave His life for us. So we should give our lives for our brothers and sisters. Suppose someone sees a brother or sister in need and is able to help them. And suppose that person doesn’t take pity on these needy people. Then how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, don’t just talk about love. Put your love into action. Then it will truly be love.

—1 John 3:16-18

What does this mean?

Jesus showed us how to love when He died for our sins. He did it because He loves us, and like Jesus, we can show love to others through our actions, as well. We can do good deeds, be kind, help our friends and give to others. The best way to show somebody that you love them is through actions.

Hi kids!

What would you say if a friend asked, “Who is Jesus?” Would you be able to tell them who He is and why He is important?

As Christians, we know who Jesus is. We learn about Him at church, in our Bibles and from our parents and corps officers. But even though we know His name and what He means to us, it is still a difficult question to answer. Who is Jesus?

Sometimes it can be hard to believe in and understand things that we cannot see. That’s why God created Jesus, a human just like us, who was born on earth and showed people all the amazing things that God does for them.

In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read more about God’s awesome plan to send Jesus to earth.

Your friend, Abby Who Is Jesus? Draw a picture of

True or False?

Jesus was a carpenter.

Jesus had 12 disciples.

Jesus was born on Thanksgiving Day.

Jesus performed miracles.

In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were made through Him. Nothing that has been made was made without Him. Life was in Him, and that life was the light for all people. The light shines in the darkness. But the darkness

has not overcome the light.
—John 1:1-5

What does this mean?

In this verse, “the Word” means Jesus. In the beginning, before any of us were born and before earth was created, God had a big plan. He created life on earth, including the plants, animals, water, air and humans, and all of this would not be possible without His awesome plan. He knew all the amazing things that He was going to create (including you and me) and He knew that we would need a Saviour like Jesus.

Did You Know?

In the Bible, Jesus is referred to by many names and titles. He is often called Lord, Saviour, Teacher and Christ. He is also called by the name Immanuel, which means “God is with us” in Hebrew.
