Just for Kids September 2023

Page 1

Hi kids!

It’s the first week of September, which means kids across the territory are preparing to head back to school. And one of the best parts about going back to school is getting to see all the friends we’ve missed over the summer.

Friendships are important! As Christians, we are meant to be friends with everyone, and to love and support them. The Salvation Army has friends all over the world, and just like our friends at school, it is important for us to reach out to our friends and offer support when they need help. That’s why we have programs such as Brighter Futures, Gifts of Hope and Under the Tree, which you will read about in this issue of Just for Kids.

As you head back to school for another awesome year, remember that God—and your friends—are with you!

Your friend, Abby

Ready for School!

The Salvation Army knows that a good education is important for kids. Every child should have the chance to learn and grow!

The Salvation Army works hard to support others, even if they’re far away from us. Through programs such as Brighter Futures and Under the Tree, we are able to raise money to give kids across the world all the things they need for school, such as desks, backpacks and books.

One student in Zimbabwe, which is a country in Africa, was so happy that he said, “Thanks to you, we have a wonderful education. You have given us the power to be the best in this world!”

It’s a good feeling to know that we can help our friends. Jesus once said that it is better to give to others than to receive. And that’s what we believe, too.

At the INSPIRE Congress that took place in the summer, Michelle Mailman from Wetaskiwin Corps in the Alberta and Northern Territories Division was awarded the very first Territorial Commander’s Youth Leadership Award for helping her church raise money (and beat their goal!) for Partners in Mission. She also presented General Brian Peddle, who was The Salvation Army’s international leader at that time, with a cheque for the money she raised. Great job, Michelle! You INSPIRE us!

Hi kids!

What makes a good friend?

I can think of a lot of things that make my friends great. They are kind and supportive, they are there for me when I need them and they always keep their promises.

The Bible tells us that “a friend loves at all times. They are there to help when trouble comes” (Proverbs 17:17). God is the best friend we can have. He is always there for us, He is faithful and He keeps all of His promises. He kept His promise when He sent Jesus to save us and teach the world about love.

In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about two friends in the Bible, David and Jonathan, who promised to stay friends forever. Like God, they kept their promise.

Your friend, Abby

Best Friends

Do you have a best friend? The Bible tells us a story about two young men, David and Jonathan, who were loyal friends, even when times were tough: David was a soldier in King Saul’s army. King Saul had a son named Jonathan, who was close friends with David. Jonathan gave David many gifts: a robe, sword, bow and belt. David and Jonathan made a promise to each other that they would stay good friends, no matter what happened.

David was an excellent soldier and King Saul gave him a good position in the army. Then people started to like David more than King Saul. The king was angry. He

saw David as his enemy.

King Saul wanted Jonathan to kill David. Instead, Jonathan warned David about his father and David escaped to safety. Jonathan then spoke to King Saul and convinced him not to hurt his best friend.

But King Saul changed his mind and David had to hide again. Jonathan found David and promised that he would protect him. They were both very sad. They knew that David could not come back because of the king.

So Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace. I will always be a friend to you and your children.” Then David left, and Jonathan went home.

At school, sometimes we encounter kids who are not friendly or who leave others out. This is called bullying, which is when someone is hurtful to another person on purpose. This can make the person being bullied feel upset, sad, hurt or scared. Bullying is never OK. God wants all of us to love and accept one another.

If you see someone being bullied, what can you do? You can tell a grown up, such as a teacher or a parent, and they will help. You can also be a friend to everyone and stick up for your friends when they need it.

In the Bible, there were some people who were not always nice to others. In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about Saul, who treated others poorly until God forgave him and it changed Saul’s life.

Saul and Barnabas

There was once a man named Saul who used to do mean things to people who believed in Jesus. But one day, Jesus appeared to Saul in a bright light and spoke to him. It changed Saul’s life. He became a follower of Jesus and started telling everyone about Him.

But there were some people who didn’t trust Saul because of all the mean things he had done before. They were scared and didn’t believe that Saul had really changed.

One of Saul’s friends, Barnabas, knew that Saul had truly changed and wanted to help him, so he took Saul to meet the other disciples. They were still unsure about Saul—they were afraid of him because of his past. But Barnabas stood up for Saul. He told the disciples about Saul’s encounter with Jesus and how he had become a different person. He shared about the amazing things Saul had done since then and asked the disciples to give Saul a chance.

Find the words from this week’s Bible story.

Finally, the disciples listened to Barnabas and accepted Saul. They welcomed him into their community and together they continued to spread the good news about Jesus. Saul, who later became known as the Apostle Paul, was grateful for their acceptance and friendship.

What does the Bible say about friendship?

Here is my command. Love one another, just as I have loved you. No one has greater love than the one who gives their life for their friends.

You are my friends if you do what I command.

—John 15:12-14

What does this mean?

God is our friend—He loves us very much and teaches us how to love others. As Christians, we must treat each other the same way that God treats us.

A person shouldn’t stop being kind to a friend. Anyone who does that stops showing respect for the Mighty One.

—Job 6:14

What does this mean?

We are all children of God. He created us equally and it is important to respect God’s creation and be kind to one another.

Hi kids!

When we want to get really good at something, such as singing, playing an instrument or playing a sport, we practise it. Sometimes it takes time and many tries to get it right, but when we do, it is exciting! It feels good to learn a new skill.

As Christians, God wants us to practise skills such as compassion, patience, kindness and forgiveness. Forgiveness is when we choose to let go of feelings of anger, resentment or revenge toward someone who has hurt us or done something wrong. It means showing kindness and compassion to others, even when they have treated us poorly.

Forgiveness is not always easy. Sometimes it takes time to forgive, and that’s OK. We can ask God to help us forgive others, and to ask for forgiveness ourselves.

What does the Bible say forgiveness?about

You are God’s chosen people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes. Don’t be proud. Be gentle and patient. Put up with one another. Forgive one another if you are holding something against someone. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you.

—Colossians 3:12-13

What does this mean?

When God created humans, He gave us a special job: to love one another. We are meant to be kind and patient, and if someone does something wrong to us, we should forgive them.

In the Bible, Jesus teaches us about forgiveness through His own words and actions. He showed us the ultimate act of forgiveness when He died on the cross for our sins. Despite the pain and suffering He endured, Jesus forgave those who crucified Him. This act of forgiveness is a powerful example for us to follow. If God can forgive, we can, too.

Hi kids!

It’s officially fall—my favourite season! I enjoy watching the leaves turn different colours and doing fall activities, such as carving pumpkins and picking apples. Have you ever been apple picking? It can be so fun to pick apples from an orchard and then take them home to eat (and bake pies!).

In the Bible, Jesus uses fruit trees to teach us an important lesson. What do apple trees and Christians have in common? You’ll have to read this issue of Just for Kids to find out!

Your friend, Abby

that is stored up in his heart. An evil man says evil things. These come from the evil that is stored up in his heart. A person’s mouth says everything that is in their heart. —Luke 6:43-45

What does this mean?

Imagine a tree in a garden. When the tree is healthy and good, it will grow beautiful, tasty fruit, such as apples or oranges. But if the tree is not good, it won't produce good fruit. It might have rotten or sour fruit.

ISSUE39

Jesus says that people are like trees. Our actions and words show what kind of people we are inside. Good people will do good things and say kind words, just like a good tree producing good fruit. But a person who does and says bad things is not good inside, like bad fruit.

So, Jesus wants us to try our best to be kind to others, be truthful and use our words to encourage and help people.
