This Weeks meeting – (Thank you for this report Kristin ) A passionate poetry discussion took place at this week’s shortform meeting/haiku workshop. Both the forms of Tyburn and Landay were further explored. Tyburn is a form, which includes repetition within the last two lines of the lines it precedes. Lines 1 and 2 are repeated in the 5th line, and 3 and 4 in the 6th line. Landay is an Arabic form, originally used by females but now is used by males. Often, it is a love message displayed on trucks to the wives of the men, but can sometimes be political, religious, or related to war/honour. As it was Valentine ’s Day on that same day, I decided to share with the group a Somonka poem (love poem) which Stephanie wrote. Such beautiful imagery is created within this poem, such as a beach with the line ‘Roll on and off our shoreline’. The penultimate line ‘As we bound as one’, cements the concept of the couple being an island themselves. My favourite part of the whole poem is where it mentions ‘dreams’ and ‘faith’, illustrating how the couple are deeply in love with one another, and that they don’t wish to escape their dream-like fantasy romance. As ‘Fate favours true faith’, it is their destiny to belong together. Gorgeous!

Equally beautiful imagery was created in Linda’s haiku poem (see below): Bird song heralds dusk, Orange glow sets, Twilight approaches

All in all, it was a very good session. Dairy Dates Our next meeting will be at ‘The Kitchen’ on Great Moor Street, Bolton – 21st February 2019 A ‘Walk and Write’ outing (weather permitting) will start at The Jumbles Café, Bolton on Friday 22nd February 2019 – 11.00 a.m. (email steffie@incidentalhaiku.com)

Book Review – The way of Tanka Written by Naomi Beth Wakan this book has a lot to offer the reader. I think it provides a comprehensive examination of this Japanese poetry form, also appreciate how the roots of it being discussed as well as the ways it changed within our western culture. The Tanka’s within the book illustrate the many stages of this and they also delighted me as a reader. I would recommend this book to any shortform poetry enthusiast.
