&KDLUPDQœV 5HSRUW Friends. A warm welcome to all members both old and new to the Autumn edition of Waterwitch. I am writing this piece as Robin, our new chairman, is away until later this month and the editor needs his copy. Another full boating season has come and gone: 2015 seems to me to be rapidly drawing to a close and the colder darker nights hold sway. So it is time, perhaps, to reflect on the fortunes of the Trust during the past six or seven months. On the restoration front things have not gone as speedily as we would have liked, but problems are being dealt with in a professional manner and Peter -RQHV¡ UHSRUW H[SODLQV WKH FXUUHQW SRVLWLRQ The main event this year, and one of which we can be justly proud, was the highly successful National Trailboat Festival held in conjunction with the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) and The Westmorland $JULFXOWXUDO 6RFLHW\¡V RZQ &RXQWU\ )HVW ,W ZDV D PDUYHOORXV H[DPSOH RI how working together saved the Trust a considerable sum of money and helped Country Fest provide the public with an enhanced event due to the boats and other canal societies being present. My thanks to Neil McGarry, his Project Group and many other members for the considerable amount of hard work in the planning and operation of this event. We received many plaudits. We have a fairly new set of volunteers who have stepped up since the AGM to replace those who had given many years of invaluable service. In particular we thank Alan Mather for many years as both Membership Secretary and Boat Manager. David Joyner is our new Boat Manager and is straight in the deep end, (not in the canal, I might add), with Neil McGarry, as together they embark on the three year lift out and inspection regime. We also appreciate all Richard Trevitt did as Chairman, Working Party Organiser etc. Richard took on many different jobs and made a big difference to the canal and Trust. We miss both him and Alan. Dave Moll becomes our new Membership Secretary and has the sometimes onerous job of prising some money from Members who may be a little forgetful in renewing their membership. Please, if this is you, then send in your money and continue to help us in our tasks. As you will VHH IURP 'DYH¡V FRQWULEXWLRQ WR WKLV PDJD]LQH VXEVFULSWLRQV DUH GXH LQ January. There is a Standing Order form to be found on page 7, if required. I feel that clarification is needed regarding life membership. The life subscription of £180 applies to an individual member only, not, (as stated in the previous issue of Waterwitch), one or two adults at the same address. I also note that some renewals for 2015 were still at the rate of £10. Please note that £14 will be due for all individual memberships. T o s a v e po s t a g e c os t s , communications to members between issues of Waterwitch are sent by email whenever possible. To make these communications as effective as possible, please ensure that I have an up-to-date email address for you if you have one. This can be communicated to

This is my first report as membership secretary, having been elected to the post at the 2015 A.G.M. I have to say that picking up the reins has been challenging, but I feel I am now settling into the role. New memberships have been quite brisk over the summer, but membership always goes up when people go on Waterwitch during the summer but now obviously fewer people will be joining as there are no trips. It may, however, be appropriate to issue a reminder that, as stated in the constitut ion, "New Members joining after 1st September in any year shall have their membership extended to 31st December of the following year..." Now is therefore a good time to encourage new members to join us. This is also a timely occasion to remind members, other than life members, that their membership is due for renewal at the start of January. If you already pay by standing order, no action is necessary as long as the subscription rate in your standing order is up-to-date. If you don't, please either set up a standing

'there is no magic bullet to solve this problem...'. He has made s ome inv e st ig a t ion a nd recommendations for us to follow which will lead to the locating the leak. We have identified that there is a substantial amount of clay in the towpath bank but whether it is of the right 'puddle' quality needs to

be determined. If the clay needs puddling then we will need an army of navvies in boots or a herd of sheep or cows. Difficult on the sloping sides though! We hope to resume filling tests soon to get more measurements. A plan for remedial work is needed for next summer when we hope to host a WRG volunteer camp. Peter Jones

The canal art class teaching Roses and Castles at the Old School Gallery, Crooklands, is proving very popular. Lancaster Canal never had Roses and Castles art decorating their 70 foot by 14 foot coal barges. However, keeping in the spirit of modern pleasure boats, our Press Officer and Local Artist Frank Sanderson has developed a unique Lancaster style. Traditional Roses and Castles art always depicted imaginary castles and bridges. Frank thinks that if we are to paint castles and bridges, let them be real Lancashire or Westmorland castle DQG EULGJHV -RKQ 2 *DXQW¡V FDVWOH and Kendal's ancient Nether Bridge, both still in constant use today, are well worth painting. Celia Briar, Lancaster Canal Trust Secretary, thinks these classes quite exciting, and are a good way of de v e loping t he culture around the Lancaster Canal and increasing people's appreciation. Everyone had a really nice time learning something worthwhile in such a pleasant atmosphere.

Canal Art Classes Prove Popular Quotes from students include: "Frank is a great teacher, very encouraging" "He shows us techniques we can build on and it's really satisfying. It's a traditional craft but at the same t ime pe ople a re a lr ea dy developing their own styles, and their individuality shows through". "I'm hoping to paint my canal boat in roses and castles eventually" Painting is done on specially prepared boards, supplied by Frank, and there is constant laughter from the students when looking at their early attempts, such is the speed at which they are improving.

Panoramic Pictures of the Northern Reaches Peter Jones I am planning to build up a full a full set of 360 degree panoramic (Photo Sphere) pictures of all points of interest along the Northern Reaches. These will be similar to Google Street View pictures (they only do the roads). They will form part of an interactive presentation to assist with and promote the restoration of the Northern Reaches. The example picture, at the foot of this page, is of Kendal Changeline Bridge but needs a bit of web site magic to bring it to life. I started the project from Kendal, spent half of a glorious day and got about 1 1/2 miles so it will take some time to do. I am looking for

We report, with a tinge of

volunteers to assist me for the next 12 1/2 miles. All you need is an Android camera or tablet with the Google Camera app; you just follow the dots around. You can probably do it with an iPad as well. If you are interested please contact me as below and I can give further information, you can do as little or as much as you like. Just wait for a fine day! You also learn a lot about the canal and its environs. The Trust recognise that their extensive restoration work on the Nort hern Reaches at Stainton, near Kendal, is inevitably taking volunteer workers away from the Lancaster to Preston section. So, as reported in the last edition of Waterwitch I was organising, on behalf of Lancaster Canal Trust, a special joint working party with the Canal and River Trust. This took place on Wednesday 20th May at Aldcliffe Road in Lancaster. Blessed with sunny weather the team rubbed down and prepared part of the long fence alongside the towpath, did some minor repairs (thanks, Nigel) and then started painting!. As the rails were to be painted white and the uprights black there was some competition between the two colour groups". Well! What colour would you paint the old Black and White canal? It is hoped to continue this job (some way still to go along the fence) and attempt other jobs over the next few months. BB
