RIM FAIENCED TABULATION | 6

RIM FAIENCED TABULATION: Pan, Flan, Plan Rim Faienced Tabulation is a way of recalibrating, renegotiating and refunctionalising the borderlands of the Wyspy Wrocławski, a set of islands engulfed by the Odra. The islands, previously an industrial hub responsible for feeding the city, have seen myriad traces of Wrocław’s erasure and post-war sanitization, which have forced the Odra into unsympathetic edges. The islands are seen as an apparatus, syntactically aware but looking for an agency. This imaginary of Wrocław thus offers a set of conditions juxtaposing the borderland of rural and urban, field and city, which meet at the Dinner Table and hold the image of that space. The Longest Dinner Table is both an urban and architectural device for refunctionalising the city, a ruse by which to organise and test occupation rather than prescribe finite functions. It is conceived as the real register against which everything is read, a 1:1 datum upon which communal relationships between glass [fluid], metal [cutlery] and clay [crockery] are framed, recording processes and exchanges that are constantly evolving, temporary and not static [a meal]. The Dinner Table is a political and economic scheme, non-prescriptive but testing certain infrastructural and social proposals that invoke Wrocław’s lost Collective Memory.

Rim Faienced Tabulation registers the rise and fall of water and ground alike, revealing where there is an overflow [flood, judder] that requires careful calibration. Land spills into water and water spills into land, compelling tabulation, charged with function. This moment of judder [flood] is the calibrating of the past, present and future, a single Denkbild, a gesture that the thesis tests through attuned architectural proposals and articulates through the meal. The dinner Table becomes a gesture by which to refunctionalise the Wyspy Wroclawski.

The organised chaos of the shifting Dinner Table is just as significant as the fluctuating sands of the Odra Water Table. Working between the tensions of these surfaces, Rim Faienced Tabulation makes manifest the aqaousness of space and architecture. The sprawling roof is an articulation, a tactical operation that deals with this fluctuating relationship between land and water, Dinner and Water Tables, compelling all other parts to move in a suspended animation of air-filled, pressurised top/bottom surfaces. The structure is made up of multiple structures in various combinations that leave vestiges of one another and invoke ideas of the other, similarly to how a plate can invoke any and all aspects of a meal. Mlyn Maria and Slodowa 7, the existing structures on the islands, are renegotiated and refunctionalised, contracting and expanding seasonally, sometimes wholly engulfing the structures and stretching down into the water table in the form of various pavilions [moments of clarity], sometimes retreating within the structures sitting in the existing building walls. The architectural gestures are arrangements for the use, making and selling of ceramics, glassware, metalware and naturally, food, between the surfaces of the Dinner Table and the Water Table.

PAN:

[ Siting ]

The Wyspy Wroclawski, is a set of small islands engulfed by the Odra. The islands, previously an industrial hub responsible for feeding the city during the war, juxtaposes an orderly, sanitised centre on the southern riverbank with the industrial past of Nadodzre on the northern. The islands as witnesses are perfectly poised, becoming a vessel for the thesis.

FLAN:

[ Setting ]

These island territories have seen myriad traces of Wroclaw’s erasure and post war clean up, specifically witnessed as the Odra has been forced into new harsh edges. The processes of Judder, Collective Memory are redrawn and remade between the surfaces of the Dinner and Water Tables in order to recalibrate and refunctionalise the islands.

PLAN: [ Seating ] A single Denkbild is presented in the multiple frames of the Dinner Table as the [glass] flood refunctionalises and offers clarity to some tables on site. Slodowa 7 and Mlyn Maria are two existing structures on the islands that are within the tensions of the top and bottom of the glass. These architectural gestures are possible functionalisations of the islands’ Dinner Table.

Rim Faienced Tabulation makes manifest the aqaousness of space and architecture. The sprawling roof is an articulation, a tactical operation that deals with this fluctuating relationship between land and water, Dinner and Water Tables, compelling all other parts to move in a suspended animation of air-filled, pressurised top/bottom surfaces.

1. Existing Mill Mechanics retained and upgraded. Water flow speed in the Odra is 141 m3/s and using the equation 5 x Head (m) x Flow Rate (m3/s) in kW it can be estimated that a yield of 7,050kW can be achieved. With a simple conversion motor, the power generated can be re appropriated helping to feed the motorized lift to bring in locally sourced clay deposits. *in the wider system, this simple power gain helps to fuel the wider processes within the overall scheme

ENVIRONMENTAL Wet & Dry Hot & Cold Natural Ventilation

2. Mlyn Maria in its new role as artisanal center will produce vast amounts of residual heat through the use of its clay, glass and metal workshops. The residual heat from these craft processes will in main be ejected from the building using natural cross ventilation. Filters will have to be utilized so as to minimize the distribution of harmful chemicals, which are produced as a bi-process of the firing process. Heat exchangers will also be employed to capture waste heat that can be utilized and re-directed to other areas of the building. Vents in the floor plates and openings in the glass roof will help facilitate natural stack ventilation within the atrium.

3. Slodowa 7 has hot zones, similar to the Mlyn scheme. Top temperatures will be lower but the heat will still need to be removed. Similar methods will be employed; heat exchangers and filters. Special care has been taken to locate the kitchens (hot spaces) in naturally cross vented spaces so as to create temperate dining and cooking spaces. Given the vast volume of the glass roof in this scheme, the panels of glazing have been developed so as to include insulation and LED lighting panels. Reducing the glass percentage improves the UV value of the system as well as its functionality. *Planning the site as a whole allows the exchange of waste heat and power across the site. *The schemes will also include provisions for ground source heat pumps – the clay soils of the islands will facilitate their placement readily and provide a constant yield and heating supply for the internal spaces year round. Further investigation would need to be undertaken, but potentially the waters of the Odra could also be used in a similar manner to generate power and heat for the buildings. Studies would, in particular, need to take into account the natural systems in proximity to the islands – the fish and bird populations that could be affected by a heat influx from the buildings.

Hot Box Envelopes Areas with ovens, hot plates and kilns are mainly constained within the Hot Boxes, meaning that any spread of heat or fire is limited. Moreso, systems are in place for collecting and recylcing the heat produced by the various programmatic processes. Hot areas are contained to the bottom and middle floors, opening up to the glazed roof above.

RIM FAIENCED TABULATION | 96

Hot Box Envelopes Workshops are primarily elevated to the upper floors, with the ground floor becoming a semi-heated permeable skin

Mill Mechanics Machinery within the latter half of the mill building is able to generate electrictiy for the various programmatic elements, however they are illosated enough to not be a risk to the occupants should anything happen

The infrastructure reveals the structures that are no longer viable and functional, however have the potential to be for the purpose of the islands. The overwhelming weight of the glass spills out therefore. The land spills into the water and the water into the ground, directed and influenced by the existing site infrastructure that the proposals revitalise and refunctionalise as part of the tabulating process.
