YOF

The Youth Opportunities Fund, or YOF, is a fund set aside for Key Club International by Kiwanis International to provide grants for service projects. Grants are given from $200 to $2,000 to help Key Clubs that have a great service idea but would require more funding than they can afford to give. No project is too big or too small to apply for help from YOF. Philipsburg High School in New Jersey’s Division 13 received a grant last year for a back pack program, helping children in need of nutritious food. The projects supported by the Youth Opportunities Fund can be pertaining to any need a club chooses to address in its home, school, or community. Look around to see if there is a service opportunity waiting to be taken. The New Jersey District does not usually have a large number of applications for the grants, so we highly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity! The deadline for applications is October 15, 2014 and clubs will be notified about a decision no later than January 1, 2015. more information about applying can be found at http://www.keyclub.org/service/fund/yof/yofgrant.aspx.

Prevent Child Abuse

Prevent Child Abuse New Jersey is an organization that advocates preventing child abuse. Their campaign includes periodic walks called Footsteps for Families. Everyone (homes, schools, communities) are encouraged to display pinwheels as a way to raise awareness. How to Charter a Key Club 1. Find an Advisor to take on the club. He/she should understand the values of key club and its vastness.

2. Talk with your principal to see if Key Club can be a part of the official clubs of your school.

3. Rally up members and hold your first meeting. At the meeting talk about what Key Club is and what its benefits are for members (scholarships, leadership, service, etc.).

4. Although members do not have to pay dues for the first year a club exists, the club has to pay a chartering sum which will pay for a gavel/gong, charter banner, pins, membership cards, and additional resources. One way to get money for the charter is to contact a sponsoring Kiwanis club. To find your sponsoring Kiwanis club, contact New Jersey District Governor Samantha Levisay at NJGovernorLevisay@gmail.com.

5. Fill out a club charter petition---found online---and send it in to Key Club International along with a check for the charter. Create club bylaws, which are also found online. Elect officers. Hold a chartering dinner/ceremony! Celebrate your new club and its new opportunities. Find and make service project opportunities in your community.
