Murray mania!

YOUR STORIES

A few weeks back the country marvelled as British number one Andy Murray became the first British player since Fred Perry to lift the Wimbledon title. Against the tough opposition of the world number one, overcoming huge temperatures and media pressure, the Scot took national pride back to an olympic high. The victory inevitably sparked a surge of interest from young players to get involved over the tournament and over the following weeks we were seeing balls flying everywhere in Egerton Park and Little Common tennis courts. But is the town equipped enough to produce the next tennis sensation?! Firstly let’s get Little Common recreation parks courts out the way. The plus side to these is that they are free to all to use and during the day tend not to be busy; which as schools have just broken up is great for kids wanting to play. But the down side to these courts is their condition. Considering they are free to play it is hard to complain, however when we have a stereotypical British summer of rain, the mud and leaves blow onto the court from the nearby woods, making them incredibly slippery and dangerous to play on. So much so that one court has had to be closed due to the slippery surface. Egerton Park is the next widely available facility for the town with arguably the better court of the two. There are eight hard surface courts in the park with five of these open to the general public to use; with three reserved for the tennis club there. After 6 o’clock the five courts become free for all to use which for people finishing work is ideal as they can go down with friends and family for as long as they like with no cost. This creates a problem though as people have no cut off point so they can stay there as long as they wish, sometimes causing big queues. However during the day fee’s come into effect as adults are charged £5.50 per hour and kids can play for £4.00 per hour. This seems a lot considering the people who are likely to want to play during the day. Now that the schools have broken up for the summer holidays more younger people are going to want to play and whilst money is tight for everyone at the moment who can afford a luxury like that for their child every day. That is not taking into consideration the cost for balls and rackets which raises the prices as well. I once spoke to a teacher at the college for an interview for Uni in which they said “Coming from a tennis academy, I was amazed to see how few schools have tennis in PE due to costs and lack of coaches. When professional tennis players finish their career they tend to go into coaching professionals rather than teaching tennis to the masses.” She pointed out that the world of tennis then enters a cycle: players don’t get the opportunity to start tennis at school therefore don’t gain the knowledge and skills; they don’t turn professional therefore not transferring their skills into coaching at schools. “It is essential children get into tennis at a young age so the skills taught have time to develop.” Maybe I am looking at this from a negative point of view as we are very lucky to have any facilities at all in this town regardless of the costs. I would just love to be able to say in 20 years’ time that I once saw a British number one come from little old Bexhill.

LOCAL FOOD

Summer time and the Livin’ is Easy

The weather’s looking good, you’ve got a bunch of family and friends round for a BBQ so why not keep the food simple and enjoy the fun? This easy burger recipe can be prepared in advance, ready for you to grill and chat, then serve.

Proper Beef Burgers 500g Beef mince, not the lean type, you need the fat for a juicy burger 1 Small onion, finely chopped 1 Teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, with stalks removed Half a bunch of fresh parsley, finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper Salad to serve Burger buns

In a large bowl add all the ingredients and get mixing with your hands, until everything is well combined. Using your hands again divide mixture into four parts and shape into four large burgers; or you could stretch this out to six if you wanted. Place in the fridge for a good 30 minutes as chilling the burgers prevents them breaking up on cooking. Once your BBQ is ready, cook for 6-7 minutes each side or longer if you want it well done. Allow the cooked burgers to rest for a good minute before you assemble the fillings. Feel free to pep things up by adding extras such as sautéed mushrooms with ‘garlicky’ mayonnaise, or American mustard and sliced gherkins. Whatever the ingredients you choose, the best are already with you: family and friends.

BBQ Tips Arrange your charcoal in a pyramid shape, spreading a couple of firelighters evenly thorough the pyramid and light each one. Leave for around 20-30 minutes by this time, the flames should have died down and the charcoal has turned white. Spread the charcoal out a little allowing the very edges to be free of embers so that you can have cooler areas so you can keep food warm while you continue cooking.

GARDENING

GARDENING ADVICE FOR AUGUST

Welcome to our monthly gardening column where we will keep you up to date with all the important jobs to keep your garden looking great all year. Wow! What a scorcher July has been, record breaking sunshine all month long taking us and the garden all by complete surprise. Keeping the garden watered last month was by far the busiest job especially if you are growing vegetables. The extreme heat has probably meant you have been reaching for a nice cool drink and the sun lounger rather than your hoe and shears, but don’t worry the heat has meant the garden has slowed a little and we can play catch up this month. Looking around, the lawn has been the worst to suffer with the lack of rain, turning a horrible shade of brown but don’t worry it will come back quickly if you haven’t been able to water yours. We do get regularly asked about how to introduce wildlife into the garden so I have featured this below.

Keep cool and carry on – gardening! Lawn care If the grass is scorched leave it alone, I know it looks terrible but so does everyone elses! Wait for the rain (it will come!) keep the blades high even if you can cut it. Hedges If you have been on the sun lounger soaking up the sun, the hedges are probably looking a bit hairy now – formal evergreens (box, holly, privet), deciduous (Hornbeam, Beech and Hawthorn) conifers (Yew, Leylandii) can all be lightly trimmed and shaped as required. Shrubs When do we trim or shape our shrubs? As a general rule ‘has it just finished flowering?’ Yes, then it can be shaped/trimmed, immediately before it produces next year’s buds. Wildlife in your garden Wildlife will be encouraged to come in if they have food, either flowers or seeds and nuts, water and a safe or undisturbed area. Creating a pond is possibly the best way to encourage a whole host of birds and insects however this is not always practical. Growing plants is a cost effective and easier alternative Sunflowers, Foxglove, Thyme, Lavendar, and Honeysuckle to name a few. Taller flowers will attract flying friends from bees to dragonflies. Night-scented plants such as Buddleia and Evening Primrose are great for moths and butterflies which in turn are a feast for bats. You may see willow or garden warblers, house-martins, swifts and swallows this month. A birdbath can be a vital source of drinking water for birds. Ensure that yours is kept topped up. It is the breeding season of damselflies and dragonflies. Hoverflies and ladybirds are also in abundance this month. Hoverflies do not sting although they look a little like wasps – this is just their defensive camouflage to deter predators. Planting Marigolds around vegetables will attract hoverflies as cheap and colourful pest control. Frogs, toads and newts, are now leaving the pond, usually at times when the ground is damp so be careful with your strimmer! Date for your diary is listed at the back, in the ‘What’s happening in Bexhill?’ section. Enjoy your garden however large or small there is always plenty to do, if you need a hand please visit www.jwardgardens.co.uk Happy gardening!

Ian.

news from mayor of bexhill

BEXHILL NEWS

The preparations for the variety show are picking up. The De La Warr has been booked and artists are starting to come on board. There are people stopping me in the street asking if they can have tickets. They are not on sale yet but watch this space. I am aso grateful to Joan McDonnell and her family for taking over the bulk of this programme. With her and her girl’s expertise they are doing a sterling job. The manager of the Caring Community, Jackie Haggerty and I are going round the shops soon asking for raffle prizes for the show. Here’s hoping we get some nice things. Bexhill Caring Community has become much busier since I wrote last. This is because of the announcement to close day centres run by Social Services. These day centres have trained staff that provide services that we couldn’t afford to take on. For instance they offer bathing, hairdressing and chiropody just to mention a few, some charging £30-40 per day. The Caring Community day centres charge £13 per day are run mainly by volunteers and therefore cannot provide these services. We are more of a lunch club where people meet and can have some socialising. This is a vital role that we play as the majority of our clients would have no social life at all and this would mean isolation. Anyone worried about a relative not being able to access a day centre should contact Bexhill Caring Community for information. We are always willing to listen and help where we can. Call 01424 215116. As I carry out my duties as Mayor, I have been made aware of little help groups that get together to support people who have similar problems and difficulties. An example I can give is Jack’s Dream. A group set up for parents who have lost children and who can’t afford to buy a headstone to mark the grave. They have helped a lot of people and if memory serves me well, have received calls from several parts of the country. A worthwhile charity that I hope one day be recognised nationally. I am amazed at the generosity of the people of Bexhill. They always come to support societies even in a recession. I have met some lovely people in my rounds as Mayor and have been invited to the most wonderful displays of talent, mainly from the young of the town. We always hear of the young ones who cause trouble but they are far and few and remember, it sells newspapers. There are young people out there playing sports and winning medals and trophies and working hard. There are those who are involved in performing arts and music giving their time to entertain the people of Bexhill and it’s those leaders that I talk to and generate such enthusiasm for their crafts, they are an inspiration for the young.

Mrs. Frances Winterborn. Mayor of Bexhill

AnnuAl FAmily Fun DAy

During our pregnancy with Jack we were told that Jack had 1 in 5 chances of having Down Syndrome, not surviving til term or a chromosomal defect. However, we decided to give Jack a chance. We went for numerous scans, Jack’s heart scans were perfect and he was striving, he appeared to be growing perfectly. Our last heart scan up at London, our sonographer said to us ‘theres nothing to worry about, we have no concerns.’ We arrived at the hospital at 12:15AM and were given a fantastic birthing room with a birthing pool and ball. While waiting for the midwives to switch over. As the midwife came back, she began searching for the heart beat on the CTG. (Cardiotocography) As she was searching, she picked up a heart beat that even to me, didnt sound right. It wasnt as fast as I’d heard it before. To confirm their suspicion, they asked for the doctor to scan me. As the doctor and two midwives came with the big machine, I looked the other way, terrified. I some how picked up the courage to look at the screen as they hovered over his chest where NO little heart was beating! The doctor looked at us as he turned off the machine and gently said ‘I’m very sorry!’ It was too late! Later I went outside for some air and I was looking up at the sky - I just wanted my baby! It was like a horrible dream! Jack was born on the 18th August 2008 at 21:14 weighing a dinky 5lb 12oz - he was so perfect and he looked so peaceful! We spent a fantastic night and day with him. Although Jack has been taken from me far too soon, my memories no one can take! I most certainly DO believe in angels now as I have my very own angel! With Jack as my inspiration, I decided to fundraise for his headstone in 2011. The event we held was very successful and gave me the determination to help other grieving families who cannot financially afford to buy their baby or child a perfect forever bed. So with that in mind, Jack’s Dream was set up...

Our ‘Family Fun Day’ on Thursday 15th august 2013 at The Polegrove Recreation Ground, Bexhill 10am-4pm A variety of stalls, inflatables, raffles, tombola, mini-games, fun fair rides, BBQ, Bexhill 100 Motors, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Bexhill Police FUN Dog Show and more! FREE ENTRY but as it is a way to raise a substantial amount of funds, some activities have a fee. For this event we will be fundraising for a special family who lost their 6 week old baby in May to Trisomy 13 and to hopefully have enough funds to help many more families. #bexhillianmag

how to have wellbeing

HEALTH & FITNESS

People assume that to have wellbeing, it is as simple as eating healthy and a trip to the gym. However wellbeing is not just about that, it is a whole mind and body package. Eating healthy, well we have all heard what to eat, what time to eat but it is about switching off the TV and letting go of the stresses of the day and sitting together as a family and really enjoying the food you eat. To truly let go of all we have learned would be a scary thought. Imagine what your life would feel like not to be told how to live it. Let’s begin with the basics, we all know not to eat too much is a common thought and move more than we eat is also common sense. Putting that thought aside for a moment wellbeing is actually our state of mind from within. When we wake up in the morning we get up, get washed, dressed, eat breakfast, and go to work or whatever we do in our day. Now ask yourself this “when was the last time you actually spent time in your day doing what you wanted to do, putting yourself first?” Why not have a pamper day, facial, paint your nails, a massage, just read the paper anything you enjoy. Most of the time we don’t feel we have the time to enjoy such small pleasures. Well maybe it’s time to start a hobby, such as gardening, scrapbooking, crafts, taking up a sport anything that makes you feel good, remember this is your time. At the end of each day write down, in a note book, a journal, anything that you did that was just for you and made you happy. As mental wellbeing is feeling happy and satisfied in your own mind. Soon after you get the balance of wellbeing right in your mind, your body will soon follow by feeling great. Remember when you were a child and life felt good, you enjoyed the beauty all around you, your thoughts were fun and you felt a sense of freedom, that is the very same thought you need to find to feel happiness from within. Next time you find yourself feeling worried or unsatisfied about your life, take a step back, close your eyes take a few deep breaths and remember the child you once were, we all have an inner child fighting to get out of us. There are so many things in this life you haven’t done yet and wish to. Write them down make a ‘list of to do’ and one by one as you start to do them, tick them off you will feel like you have achieved so much, how satisfying would that feel?

Wellbeing is easy to find, you just need to do things you enjoy, even as little as once a week or an hour a day; it will keep you healthy and well. Happiness is the best medicine after all. The same can be applied too, if you are feeling the stress of the six week holidays. The children are bored and want to go out, maybe money is tight in the current economic climate. Once again the same method applies take a notebook, take the children to one side and write up a list with the children of all the things they want to do, and some places you would all like to visit as a family. The six week holiday doesn’t have to be stressful, it’s about give and take and compromise. Not everything has to be expensive and lots of things can be done as a family, just remember you were a child once with your six week school holiday ahead, full of excitement and eager to get out and have fun. Remember the more you involve your children in things the less stress you and your whole family will feel. Also check out the back of the Bexhillian for lots of events and things going on locally.

hair care tips for summer

FASHION

We have been fortunate enough to have some beautiful weather of late, the Summer is here but remember your skin and hair need special attention especially from drying and harmful sunrays. Here’s some advice on hair care in the sun! Protection from Sun The rays of the sun affects not only your skin, it also affects your hair. Harmful UVA and UVB rays will cause brittleness and your colour to fade. Choose a shampoo and conditioner range with UV filters and wherever possible it’s safer to wear a hat or sit in the shade. You need to use a mask or treatment on your hair at least once a week to replace the moisture that is being lost. If you colour your hair, think about having a softer shade or less highlights as the sun will naturally lighten your hair anyway. I would always recommend the Goldwell Dual Senses Sun Reflects range, as it’s specifically made for use over the Summer months.

Photographer: Jean-Luc Brouard Hair: Emma Hellier Make-up: Bebe Joe Clothing: Bugsy Pants

Overuse of heated tools During the Summer, overuse of straighteners, tongs and hairdryers can damage your hair. Think about wearing a different, more natural style that takes less styling. Some people choose to go for a shorter look in the summer or if your hair is long-play around with some pretty ponytails and buns. Chlorine and salt water Chlorine and salt water can dry, discolour, and damage your hair. It is stripping natural protein inside the hair. Make sure you wash your hair thoroughly after exiting the pool, and always condition too. This will get rid of any chlorine left in and close down the cuticles for shine. Salt water can give your hair a great texture (think beachy, scrunchy hair) but just ensure you wash it out at the end of the day, rather than the next morning. Keep up with your hair appointments at the end of Summer. Your hair grows more in the Summer so it’s important to still get a trim every six weeks especially if you have had more sun than usual. Just a few mm of the ends can make a big difference and stop split ends developing. I thought I’d leave you with a few fun hair facts that you may not know... • Average number of hairs on a human adult head: 100,000 • Average annual growth: 12cm • The diameter of a single hair: 0.1mm • Hair grows quicker in warm weather • Split ends cannot be repaired, they must be cut off • Cutting hair does not influence its growth If anyone was enjoying Bexhill beach at the weekend, you may have spotted me making use of a friends beach hut to shoot my new collection. We had a full team of four professional models in Bugsy Pants bikinis, a makeup artist and photographer. It was a wonderful day and I just wanted to say a huge thank you to the Bexhill people who came over to say hello and compliment our work, some even took a few cheeky snaps themselves! It so nice to live in a town where creativity is encouraged in all forms! Enjoy the rest of the Summer!

SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS

pinterest – are you pinning? Whether you are using Pinterest for enjoyment or marketing your business, there is a fundamental difference in the use of Pinterest that makes it head and shoulders above Facebook, Twitter or Google +, and that difference is this: With the other networks, you go there because you feel you have to be there, checking on status’s and posting relevant company details, liking and all those other things, making it an obligation and not necessarily something that you actually want to do. With Pinterest, you go there because you want to and you can quite easily spend a whole period of time completely off topic looking at things that you like or enjoy. The network is a safe one, pornography is removed very quickly so I would be perfectly happy for young teens to mooch about there.

your online pinboard...

Basically it is an online pinboard, a visual (photographic) network, on which you can search for subjects of interest to you or your business. When you find some images that you like, you can like, comment or repin (share) onto one of your relevant pinboards. If you are planning a party, wedding or any kind of event that needs a bit of research, but you don’t want the recipients to see your ideas, you can also create ‘private’ boards. Also when you add your own images onto your boards you can link back out to your websites or relevant web pages. This makes it ideal for promoting products with buy now prices, or items that require gallery images. There is no immediate way to communicate with people, although you can follow friends. Sam and I quite enjoy the way we can get away from the world of work, if only for a brief period of looking at what we want to look at for our own interests and hobbies. It is very comforting. I follow martial arts, volkwagens, and animals, whilst being able to pin onto Mediabeetles and Bexhillian boards I also run a social media board, with great infographics. Why not follow the Bexhillian board here: www.pinterest.com/samanthaluigie/bexhillianmag/ The way to make this work for you or your business is to get involved in commenting and following people’s boards, maybe add some of your own within general interest topics, once you find people are repinning your pins that would be a good time to start introducing your own business images, which will naturally be found by people who follow you already. Don’t forget to use great keywords and hashtags within the copy and you will find your views going up. Pinterest has been noted as the most qualified lead generating site. So do not miss out on the opportunity. Once you get going and give it a try you will find your evenings wonderfully spent by this great, visually enticing social network. ART & CRAFT

art & craft on the south coast

Summer is here and the traditional Summer fairs are filled with an increasing number of homemade art & craft stalls which are springing up all over the place. It seems that the Arts & Crafts movement is experiencing a big renaissance what with the popularity of programmes such as the BBC’s Sewing Bee and Channel 4’s Kirstie Allsop’s Homemade. It appears that everybody is being inspired to go back to the days of make do and mend and they are using their skills to make beautiful handmade locally produced art and craft. Perhaps we are experiencing a backlash against the mass globalisation of imported products and there is a move to support local shops and artisans who are trying to save communities and preserve skills.

Jill Lyon (pictured above) Our Starlings featured artist of the month, tells us what inspired her to start making her products. “I’ve always loved making these ‘stitched in canvas’ art pictures and was inspired from an early age with parents who had sewing machines lying around. I find I completely lose myself when doing my artwork, it relaxes me and is very satisfying.”

It’s also true, as we found out, when we opened Starlings (independent art & craft collective supporting local artists and designer makers in Bexhill) five months ago, there is a wealth of hidden local talents out there who can channel their creative energy in to making beautiful, personalised pieces of work. We are really bowled over not just by the quality of the crafts made but also the range – for instance we have designers of needlework (bags, purses, clothing); leatherware; patchwork and quilting; knitwear; jewellery; ceramics; Art (watercolours, stitched art, greeting cards, prints etc), photography, homeware, glassware; plus also organic skincare, soap and candle makers, wood turners and illustrators. All handmade and local to Bexhill and the surrounding area. Summer is also a time to find activities to do with the children – so if you feel inspired to pick up old skills or learn new ones there are a few craft fairs to visit listed in the ‘What’s happening’ section at the back. Starlings are also still looking for members, open 7 days a week. Once inspired to make the products, we will give you advice in next months issue on how best to market and sell your products. Enjoy making.

Joe and Charlotte.

Food glorious food! Notice it doesn’t say PRODUCT GLORIOUS PRODUCT… because real food IS glorious, scrummy, sexy, social, exciting AND in ABUNDANCE. So WHY is the fastest growing product man-made in the UK not laptops, or mobile phones but PROCESSED AND TOXIC ready meals, fizzy-drinks and snacks? Well it’s because they are highly profitable, they can afford TV ads, telling you it is ‘great’, despite being loaded with chemicals, salt, fat and sugar to help it last for years in your cupboard and of course the cheaper the ingredients, that’s higher profits.

It’s very easy to change from eating profit-laden product, to nutrient fueled food. TIP NO 1 If you need to read the ingredients list on the back – you probably shouldn’t be buying it – if you can’t tell by looking at it, what it is, or what is in it – it’s probably going to be loaded with PROFIT. You don’t look at a Pork Chop or Jacket Potato and wonder what’s in it, and that is because it is FOOD and not a PRODUCT. TIP NO 2 PRODUCTS in your trolley, end up in you. So don’t buy it. Full Stop. If you buy FOOD, you’ll eat FOOD. Seriously, everyone can put a tray of chicken in the oven surrounded by veg and spuds and leave it for 45 minutes. Takes 3 minutes to prepare too. TIP NO 3 While the oven is on, make sure you load up every shelf in the oven with another tray of food: pork chops, tins of tomatoes, onions, spuds or a leg of lamb surrounded by sweet potatoes, rosemary, chick peas, lemons and courgettes. No need to get fancy – just chuck it all in. Don’t ever just cook one meal in an oven – cook 3. There you have it – 3 recipes, prepared in 3 minutes each, cooked at the same time and lasting at least 3 nights, more if you freeze it or use for lunch the next day.

QUICK – CHEAP – HEALTHY – GREAT FOR WEIGHT CONTROL Stuck for ideas? Come for a free chat at The Beach Pad, it’s not all about exercise and ‘diets’ – it’s mainly about eating gorgeous real FOOD. And quite a lot of it too! Bingo! Free recipe sheets to all Bexhillian readers

ENTERTAINMENT

david bowie is happening now... ...at the De La Warr Pavilion. This Summer, the Pavilion is bringing to you another innovative idea, live to the big screen.

David Bowie is happening now, a live event broadcast from the V&A’s sell out exhibition David Bowie is. This unique event will be shown in over 200 cinemas across the UK for your last chance to experience the exhibition before it goes on international tour. The film will be introduced by exhibition curators, Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh, and will feature special guests offering an insight into the stories behind some of the 300 objects from the David Bowie Archive, many of which have never before been displayed in public. Contributors will include avant garde Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto, who designed the flamboyant, androgynous Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Sane costumes worn by Bowie on tour in 1973; Terry O’Neill - renowned photographer of celebrities of the ‘60s and ‘70s, who worked with Bowie on several occasions and who is perhaps best known for his striking photographs of Bowie for the Diamond Dogs tour; choreographer Michael Clark, a lifelong fan of Bowie, whose piece ‘come, been and gone’ was inspired by Bowie’s music and is featured in the exhibition; and contemporary artist Jeremy Deller whose piece ‘English Magic’ at the British Pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale, is in large part inspired by David Bowie and his impact on the English psyche. David Bowie is happening now will be directed by BAFTA winning director, Hamish Hamilton who directed the live TV coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and produced by Done & Dusted Productions Ltd. The event will be brought to cinemas across the country by Picturehouse Entertainment Ltd.

The event will be screened at all participating cinemas on Tuesday 13th August 2013 at 7pm.
