As we welcome one, we say a fond farewell to another...
Now that we are all able to get out into our gardens, what better time to announce that we are happy to see the return of our resident gardener, Ian Ward! He gives us his helpful tips and advice every month. Also this month we see the return of our Vintage Fashion guru, Donna Gilbert! She will always help us buy vintage wisely as well as give us tips on how to make a vintage garment for any era! Please enjoy though, for the last time sadly, our stories from our 1939 ‘Bobby’ PC Stanley. We’ve showcased his farewell story in the centre pages. We’d like to say a huge thank you to James Armstrong for all of his hard work, writing for us. Since we began this magazine, almost a year ago, these stories have been enjoyed by many, so thank you. We aim to help promote businesses, to raise awareness for local charities and to serve the local Bexhill community by being informative and relevant to all of our readers. As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. But don’t worry we have ‘Pick up Points’ listed in the back, and on our website or email us your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you. Thank you to all who support us,

BEXHILL to bexhill... Arriving in Australia!
10th February 2014
Dear Annie,
Arriving in Australia, my first destination is Darwin. It’s the middle of the ‘wet season’ here and I’ve been sitting at the harbour, watching the skies clearing after an earlier storm as I’ve been wandering what I would write to you. I am reliant at this time on your son TAB’s account of Darwin (and the local Northern Territories library), as sadly you were too ill to record anything in your diaries. The visit here has been overshadowed by the knowledge that this was the last place the ‘Sunbeam’ docked before you lost your life to malaria just a week later. The significance of this urges me to write to you here, even though no one came ashore for fear of the local small pox outbreak which would have delayed your return to the UK with quarantine restrictions in Mauritius. The ‘Sunbeam’ docked only to take on supplies for the return journey home, and for a doctor to come on board to examine you. Darwin was still in its early days at that time, it had recently gained a telegraph station and a post office. The telegraph station meant that Australia had for the first time a telegraphic line with England and Europe via Singapore through the submarine cable from Java. It seems that a great deal was happening. The construction of the Northern Australia Railway had reached 25 miles south of Palmerston when you arrived, and was heading to the gold fields some 90 miles away. It was expected to be completed within the year. On Wednesday I will travel on this railway, now called The Ghan, it runs the width of Australia from Darwin to Adelaide, some 3,000 kilometres. There is of course, still the harbour, although it is hard to know where exactly the Sunbeam would have docked. The area also having been greatly developed, including a rather lovely ‘Waterfront’ in recent years. The city remains a small one from what I have seen, retaining many green spaces and park areas as well as a botanical gardens just outside of the city makes for a surprisingly calm city after many of the places I have travelled through in South East Asia. Tomorrow I will take a tour out to Litchfield National Park, apparently all the more spectacular for all the rain we’ve been having. With best wishes, Louise. Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated terminal is
planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project in social media.

gardening advice for April At last! After such a wet and windy winter, the long awaited Spring has finally sprung. Daffodils and blossoms are starting to bloom and as temperatures rise and rainfall lessens, the soil begins to drain and so it becomes more workable. The longer more frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. We must expect the inevitable ‘April showers’ this month but sunny albeit chilly days too. It’s an exciting month, just watch out for frosts! Spring Cleaning Hoe your borders, getting rid of weeds before they take hold – annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. Remove tired winter bedding and plants that did not survive the winter. Planting Deadhead daffodils and narcissi, give them a liquid feed or sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. • Split clumps of snowdrops • Sweet peas can be sown outside this month. Pest Watch Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails, they love Tulips!
YOUR STORIES gardening
Birds Birds will be building their nests now in preparation for laying their eggs. Do keep putting out bird food, they quickly become accustomed to regular food supplies and it’s a real treat to see wild birds in the garden. (They can help you with your slug problem too!) Trees, shrubs and climbers • Plant and move evergreen shrubs, conifers and trees and remember to water them well until firmly rooted in • Finish pruning your roses and start spraying them with fungicide • Prune hydrangeas – do not remove stems with a bud at the top, but snip off old stems. Lawns Mow regularly (start with the blades high for the first couple of cuts), over seed bare patches and apply weed and moss killer. Rake out or scarify AFTER applying moss killer or you will merely be spreading moss to the rest of your lawn!
“Now is the ideal time to sow new lawns on well prepared ground.” Happy Easter. Enjoy your garden however large or small there is always plenty to do, if you need a hand contact me, see below. Happy gardening!

Everyone is happy. So whether you’ve been out all day and want a cake and cup of tea moment or pudding after a time-heavy roast dinner, this simple make ahead cake recipe will happily sit in the fridge just waiting for you.

•
3 eggs
•
125ml buttermilk
•
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Frosting: •
500g mascarpone
•

your spring/summer wardrobe At last, the rain has stopped, the gardens are coming alive and our thoughts are finally turning to our spring/summer wardrobes. It’s time to cast off those raincoats and jumpers, embrace sorbet shades and enjoy the warmth of the sun as we cast off those layers! So, what trends should we be looking at for the seasons ahead? A new silhouette is key – full skirts falling mid calf were prevalent on the runway, accentuating the waist, as seen in the collections of Dior, Oscar de la Renta and others. Of course, Dior was responsible for the ‘New Look’ back in 1945, so it is interesting that the House of Dior has chosen to revisit this ladylike style now. Pleated skirts were also in evidence on the runways of Michael Kors, Lanvin and Chanel.
Many garments were heavily embellished with jewels and beads, or adorned with pretty three- dimensional flowers. All these new trends are already in evidence on the High Street, but for those of us looking for something a little different, remember that most of these new looks offer a nod to the past so it’s worth looking at vintage as well; 1950s for dresses in sorbet shades of lace, full mid-length skirts, jewel/bead detail; 1960s for T-shaped tops; 1940s for loose cut trousers and 1970s culottes.
Donna Gilbert. www.benjaminbrownvintage.com Facebook: BenjaminBrownVintage Follow on Twitter: @benbrownvintage
Trousers have moved away from the skinny style we have embraced for many seasons now. They are either wide and tailored, or loose and flowing in the palazzo style. When cropped, trousers embrace the culotte, not seen since the 1970s! Tops should be ‘T’ shaped – a wide-sleeved T-shirt or tunic, with a nod to the sixties. Two strong looks were evident for women; strong and empowered, or soft and ladylike. There were lots of beautiful floral prints and sorbet shades of lace for skirts, tops and dresses. Delicate slip dresses were seen on the catwalks of Dolce & Gabbana and Stella McCartney and these were, juxtaposed with strong use of leather, buckles, the colour black and strong tailoring. Logos, either a motto or a brand, were also evident and frequently teamed with something pretty to give an edge. #bexhillianmag

Coping with... back pain If I had ÂŁ1 for every time I get asked if I am fit, I would be very rich by now. Why? Due to the number of exercise classes I teach, primarily Pilates, and also chair based exercise for the elderly (and not so elderly). Much has been written about the benefits of Pilates and many new derivations have sprung up: Fitness Pilates, Yogalates, even Piloxing (a mixture of Pilates and Boxing!) but the classical methods that Joseph Pilates created remain good today. Pilates is about strengthening and lengthening the muscles and keeping the joints flexible. It releases tension and stiffness in the body and in particular helps with lower back pain in the lumbar region. Poor posture and incorrect lifting techniques all contribute to restricted and painful movement. As we walk, we exert almost twice our body weight onto our feet, and three times when we run. This force leaves our body via our knees and hips, hence the problems in later life. Pilates is gentle and can be done every day. It is an holistic form of exercise including hands and feet to keep us mobile.
YOUR HEALTH & STORIES FITNESS
clients often find they have worked hard without knowing it. Pilates concentrates on the core muscles by working the abdominal muscles. These act like a corset protecting the organs, along with the oblique muscles, helping us to twist and rotate the waist. New evidence now suggests that keeping the powerful muscles in the bottom strong can help keep the lower back in good health.
Exercises should always be done under supervision and clients given a choice of levels to try. They are encouraged to challenge themselves but never struggle. Exercises can always be modified and equality and diversity in the class is always the main priority. Occasionally resistance bands and small Pilates fitness balls are used which make the body work harder.
Celia King A typical lesson starts with posture check, warm up exercises, a core of exercises either on the back, side, front, sitting or standing and then easing down with gentle stretching and breathing. At the end of the class you should feel energised, but not sweaty!! Pilates is not for everyone, some find it too slow, but

Clean Seas Please! Have you ever thought about what happens to the stuff you put down your toilet or your sink? Our seas are not in a good way at the moment. On 10th October 2015, new EU standards could mean the water at our beaches is unfit to swim in. The Clean Seas Please campaign is all about people coming together to improve the quality of water in our local seas. We want to raise awareness and understanding of the problems facing our nearby beaches at the moment. By making a few changes now, we can have a lasting positive impact.
LOCAL NEWS
Another issue is bacteria in the droppings of the many seagulls on the beaches being washed into the sea so we need to think about our rubbish on the beach too. The less food seagulls have to eat, the less droppings they leave. We want as many people as possible to take responsibility for spreading the word. If we can overcome these problems as a community our beaches can be among the best in the country and remain lovely places for all to visit. Clean Seas Please is working with trades, businesses and most importantly the people of Hastings and Bexhill, and the surrounding area, to do as much as we can to help.
There are lots of little changes that we in the local area can make in our everyday lives to limit the pollution of our rivers and sea water.
We are involved in many local events to promote the work that is already being done and to give more information about the campaign.
Many people are already helping by changing what they put down the toilet or sink, using a bin in their bathrooms for non-human waste and scraping fat / food waste off their dishes before washing up.
The campaign is funded by the Environment Agency and managed by Hastings Voluntary Action and Rother Voluntary Action.
A variety of factors contribute to pollution, such as waste getting into the water; as well as waste water from washing machines or dish waters going into the wrong water pipes.
If you want to find out more and support the campaign, go to www.cleanseasplease.net, follow @cleanseasplease on Twitter and visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ cleanseasplease
